About the book

The number of foods with health claims continues to grow due to scientific progress in valuable molecules extracted from different plants. Functional foods, as well super foods, are established as healthy natural products, which can be used beyond their nutritional properties - for example as an effective prevention strategy, especially in the early stages of diseases. It has been reported worldwide that several diseases, such as obesity, diabetes, cancer, and autoimmune diseases, can be accelerated or delayed depending on dietary options. Phytochemicals are exploited to develop new functional foods due to their bioactive potential. Consumer interest for the active role of food in well-being and life prolongation justify the diversity expansion of functional foods. The evolution perspective has to be scientifically documented to ensure a sustainable market growth. Contributions of all elements of society is required to ensure a rapid transfer of knowledge from academia and scientists to government and industry. Covering essential aspects of health benefits of foods, this book will revise the current knowledge, scientifically proven benefits, uses of functional foods and superfoods, and applications and future challenges in nutrition and dietetics. Safety assessment, opportunities, and challenges in expanding new comprehensions on health benefits of food will be highlighted without being exhaustive.

Introducing your Author Service Manager

Ms. Dajana Pemac

As an Author Service Manager my responsibilities include monitoring and facilitating all publishing activities for authors and editors. From chapter submission and review, to approval and revision, copyediting and design, until final publication, I work closely with authors and editors to ensure a simple and easy publishing process. I maintain constant and effective communication with authors, editors and reviewers, which allows for a level of personal support that enables contributors to fully commit and concentrate on the chapters they are writing, editing, or reviewing. I assist authors in the preparation of their full chapter submissions and track important deadlines and ensure they are met. I help to coordinate internal processes such as linguistic review, and monitor the technical aspects of the process. As an ASM I am also involved in the acquisition of editors. Whether that be identifying an exceptional author and proposing an editorship collaboration, or contacting researchers who would like the opportunity to work with IntechOpen, I establish and help manage author and editor acquisition and contact.
