About the book

Modern world is moving towards sustainable development. One of the key starting materials towards sustainability is furan - its production can be considered as green, since the industrial production of furan is processed from furfural which is completely produced from biomass feedstock. Furan is used for the production of pharmaceuticals, resin, agrochemicals and lacquers, and is a key starting material for the variety of industries in preparation of many useful products. There are also many more members of the furan family that are used in preparation of many other industrial chemicals. For example, tetrahydrofuran is the derivative of the furan that is used for the preparation of very important Adipic acid, and hexamethylenediamine is used for the industrial scale production of nylon- 6,6 which is the most important ingredient for textile and plastic industry. Furan is also found in wide variety of heated processed food, baby food, coffee, juices, canned and jarred food, and vegetables.

Accordingly, this book will aim to cover the latest research and advanced information on the technology of furan and its derivatives.

Dr. Anish Khan is an assistant professor in the Chemistry Department, Center of Excellence for Advanced Materials Research (CEAMR), Faculty of Science, King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. He obtained a Ph.D. from Aligarh Muslim University, India, in 2010. He has research experience in the field of synthetic polymers and organic-inorganic electrically conducting nanocomposites. Dr. Khan completed postdoctoral studies at the School of Chemical Sciences, University Sains Malaysia (USM), in electroanalytical chemistry (2010–2011). He has years of research and teaching experience and has published more than 127 research papers in refereed international journals, more than twenty international conferences/workshops, five books, and fourteen book chapters. His research interests include preparation and characterization of hybrid nanocomposite materials and their applications, polymeric inorganic cation-exchange materials, electrically conducting polymeric materials, composite materials as sensors, green chemistry, heavy metals, and biosensors.
