Dr. Phil. Maria Jose Hernandez Serrano is a tenured lecturer in the Department of Theory and History of Education at the University of Salamanca, where she currently teaches on Teacher Education. She graduated in Social Education (2000) and Psycho-Pedagogy (2003) at the University of Salamanca. Then, she obtained her European Ph.D. in Education and Training in Virtual Environments by research with the University of Manchester, UK (2009).

About the book

In our current contexts, diverse, unstable, hyper-connected, and in continuous evolution, teachers need to be constantly equipped with pedagogical competences in their professional development. Situations like we suffer from the pandemic make us consider that the educational process must guarantee the accessible, personalized, and globalized learning of all students.

This book identifies four areas in which present and future challenges have invaded the needs teachers are facing, by showing what kind of competences, skills, and strategies are demanded in each area for teacher education, along with models, supportive actions and resources. From a theoretical and practical perspective, the book aims to offer a reference framework of innovative aims and urges for a 21st-century teacher.

First area focuses the digital environments, which are no longer complementary spaces to the classroom, but rather environments for personalization of the educational actions with new forms of participation, collaboration, access, production, and evaluation of knowledge, where teachers use technologies for a wide range of educational needs and experiences.

The second area presents the suggestive discipline of educational neuroscience, in which not only is needed to debunk some educational myths but to provide teachers with valuable knowledge to apply for effective practices, in key areas such as the effects of emotions, rewards, stimulation or attention, along with the prospective of neurotechnologies in education.

The third area is a recurrent issue in citizenship education since teachers prepare students for and depend on social positive contexts, they have to manage different conflicts, dealing with hate and violent behaviors, requiring models of prevention and promotion of positive and solidary relationships.

Finally, the fourth area aims to gather the multiple diversity issues, from functional to ethnical, to affective, gender, or sexual, by providing teachers with actions to design educational processes based on reducing distances from the difference, able to recognize and avoid exclusion or prejudices of students.


In sum, the book presents a reflective analysis of the pedagogical hubs for a changing world, considering the most fundamental areas of the current contingencies in education.

Applications to edit the book are assessed and a suitable editor is selected, at which point the process begins.

Approved chapters written in full and submitted

Once approved by the academic editor and publishing review team, chapters are written and submitted according to pre-agreed parameters

Full chapters peer reviewed

Review results due: March 1st 2021

Full chapter manuscripts are screened for plagiarism and undergo a Main Editor Peer Review. Results are sent to authors within 30 days of submission, with suggestions for rounds of revisions.

Book compiled, published and promoted

Expected publication date: April 30th 2021

All chapters are copy-checked and typesetted before being published. IntechOpen regularly submits its books to major databases for evaluation and coverage, including the Clarivate Analytics Book Citation Index in the Web of ScienceTM Core Collection. Other discipline-specific databases are also targeted, such as Web of Science's BIOSIS Previews.

DPhil Maria Jose Hernandez Serrano is a tenured Lecturer in the Department of Theory and History of Education at the University of Salamanca (Spain), where she currently teaches on Teacher Education. She graduated in Social Education (2000) and Psycho-Pedagogy (2003) at the University of Salamanca. Then, she obtained her European Ph.D. on Education and Training in Virtual Environments by research with the University of Manchester, UK (2009). She obtained a Visiting Scholar Postdoctoral Grant (of the British Academy, UK) at the Oxford Internet Institute of the University of Oxford (2011) and was granted with a postdoctoral research (in 2021) at London Birbeck University. She is author of more than 20 research papers, and more than 35 book chapters (H Index 10). She is interested in the study of the educational process and the analysis of cognitive and affective processes in the context of neuroeducation and neurotechnologies, along with the study of social contingencies affecting the educational institutions and requiring new skills for educators. Her publications are mainly of the educational process mediated by technologies and digital competences. Currently, her new research interests are: the transdisciplinary application of the brain-based research to the educational context and virtual environments, and the neuropedagogical implications of the technologies on the development of the brain in younger students. Also, she is interested in the promotion of creative and critical uses of digital technologies, the emerging uses of social media and transmedia, and the informal learning through technologies. She is a member of several research Networks and Scientific Committees in international journals on Educational Technologies and Educommunication, and collaborates as a reviewer in several prestigious journals (see public profile in Publons). Until March 2010 she was in charge of the Adult University of Salamanca, by coordinating teaching activities of more than a thousand adult students. She currently is, since 2014, the Secretary of the Department of Theory and History of Education. Since 2015 she collaborates with the Council Educational Program by training teachers and families in the translation of advances from educational neuroscience.
