Pınar Atukeren

Istanbul University Cerrahpaşa

Dr. Pınar Atukeren is the dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Istanbul University Cerrahpaş, Turkey, where she is also a senior professor in Biochemistry. She obtained a Ph.D. from the Department of Medical Biochemistry, Istanbul University Cerrahpaş, in 2005. She has been awarded the National Research Grant for Successful Students from the Scientific and Technical Research Council of Turkey. Her research interests are oxidative and nitrosative stress, free radicals and antioxidants, neurodegenerative diseases, brain tumors, and aging. Dr. Atukeren has published many papers in indexed journals and edited and authored both international and national books and book chapters. She is a reviewer for many international peer-reviewed journals. She has attended many conferences and workshops and is involved in many training courses and consultations. She is the head of the Animal Welfare and Ethics Committee and a member of the Scientific Research Projects Coordination Unit of Istanbul University-Cerrahpasa. At the community level, Dr. Atukeren is an active member in several governmental and non-governmental societies and committees.

Oxidative stress plays a crucial role in the pathophysiology of various diseases when there is a disruption of the intracellular redox balance and the homeostatic balance between cellular oxidants and antioxidants. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) react with molecular targets including proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids contributing to mitochondrial injury and cellular dysfunction. This book intends to provide the readers with an extensive overview of the novel approaches and prospects based on oxidative and nitrosative stress in the pathophysiology of various diseases and in the current treatment strategies with antioxidants.
