With the current demand for light and reliable constructions, the material that is magnesium alloys is gaining importance.
Magnesium alloys, which in addition to low density (1.7 g/cm3) also have other benefits, such as good vibration damping ability, the best of all currently known construction materials, high dimensional stability, good castability, low casting shrinkage, low density and high strength in relation to low weight, the ability to use on machine parts working at a temperature of up to 300 ° C and the ease of recycling, thus enabling the obtaining of secondary alloys very similar quality to the original material, in order to replace them with newly formed Mg alloys, in constructions less responsible.
Magnesium and its alloys until the first half of the last century were produced properly only for military purposes. In the civilian industry, due to the complex manufacturing process and high production costs, despite better mechanical properties, they could not compete with significantly cheaper construction materials. Currently, thanks to the advances made in the field of magnesium alloys technology (alloys obtained by cooling at high speeds - Rapid Solidification Processing, magnesium-based composites - MMCs - Metal-Matrix Composites, solid-state casting, remolding, tiksomolding and thixopressing), shaping , heat treatment, technological improvements and prevention from corrosion, are increasingly used in many areas of life.
