Yu-Chih Shen

Dr. Yu-Chih Shen is the director of the Department of Psychiatry at Tzu Chi General Hospital, Hualien, Taiwan. He is also an associate professor of Psychiatry and Clinical Psychology at Tzu Chi University, Hualien, Taiwan. Dr. Shen was born in Taiwan in 1976. He graduated from Chung Shan Medical University School of Medicine in 2001. Then he entered the Department of Psychiatry of Tri-Service General Hospital at Taipei, where he completed his 4 years of psychiatric residency training. He moved to Tzu Chi General Hospital in 2005. During the following years, he served as the attending physician (2005–now). He also completed his PhD degree and graduated from Tzu Chi University Institute of Medical Sciences in 2011. Dr. Shen is actively involved in academic activities. His major research interests are genetic and functional analysis of candidate genes in psychiatric disorder and pharmacogenetic study of psychiatric medication. He has published more than 40 peer-reviewed articles and has worked as a reviewer and an editorial board member for many scientific journals.

Schizophrenia treatment has many facets. This book begins with the glutamatergic and GABAergic hypofunctioning contribute to the schizophrenic symptoms and their current targeted therapeutics. The genetic, epigenetic, and immune etiologies of schizophrenia and their potential targeted therapeutics as approached in this book are interesting. Understanding cognitive biases and delusional circuits in schizophrenia is important; several behavioral cognitive therapies working on the reduction and avoidance of these cognitive biases are demonstrating their effectiveness. Advances in schizophrenia treatment followed, including transcranial magnetic stimulation and special sport program, are presented at the book's end.
