Hydropower, wind, solar, biomass and marine energy are all clean energies, but the most important is hydropower. In particular, hydropower plays an important role in optimizing the power structure of power system. Wind- solar-hydropower complementary dispatching can improve the ability of power system to absorb clean energy, which is an advantage that other clean energy does not have.
However, on a global scale, the current utilization rate of hydropower resources is not high. In 2017, the global installed hydropower capacity was 1.267 billion kw, and the annual power generation was 4185 billion kwh, accounting for only 26.5% of the global hydropower technology development. At the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit in September 2015, 193 Member States made it clear that they would continue to develop hydropower and officially adopted 17 sustainable development goals. In the same year, the Paris agreement was formally adopted at the Paris climate change conference, which shows that water resources will remain the key area of global energy development for a long time to come. In recent years, especially since 2000, a number of cascade hydropower stations have been formed at the global scale, which have the characteristics of multiple power stations and large installed capacity. It is estimated that by 2035, the global hydropower installed capacity will reach 1.75 billion kilowatts, and the annual power generation will be 6.1 trillion kilowatts; the global hydropower installed capacity will be about 480 million kilowatts, and the development rate will reach 38.6%. By 2050, the proportion of global hydropower development will reach 50% and the installed hydropower capacity will reach 2.05 billion kilowatts. The continuous operation of large-scale hydropower stations poses a serious challenge to the operation and management of hydropower system. Forecasting and dispatching is the core of hydropower planning and management. From the technical point of view, the timely and reliable runoff forecast information is an important basis for scientific formulation of hydropower dispatching scheme, and reasonable dispatching scheme is an important guarantee for making full use of hydropower resources.
This book will comprehensively review the latest progress in the field of global hydropower planning and operation management, and will discuss the difficulties in hydropower forecasting and dispatching and related technology research and development, which is of great significance for improving the operation and management level of hydropower system.
