Suzanne Bertera

Suzanne Bertera was born in Wilkinsburg, Penn, USA, in 1956. She received a degree in biology from the University of Pittsburgh, College of General Studies and her Ph.D. degree in human genetics from the University of Pittsburgh, Graduate School of Public Health in 2001. From 2003 to 2005, she worked as a Research Associate at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and was then promoted to the Faculty as a Research Assistant Professor. Her main focus has been to improve islet transplantation for diabetic patients utilizing gene therapy and genetically altered animals. She also enjoys teaching practical applications of immunogenetic and molecular biological techniques as well as small animal surgical techniques related to islet transplantation to graduate and undergraduate students. She is currently a Member of the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC/University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine Islet Isolation Core, isolating islets from human donors for research on auto- and allotransplantation and head of the Rodent Islet Core.
