Dr Emilio Ovuga, PhD dr med, is retired Professor of Psychiatry and Mental Health, and former Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Gulu University in northern Uganda. Dr Ovuga completed his undergraduate medical education at Makerere University in 1976, and postgraduate training in psychiatry at the same university in 1981. Dr Ovuga holds a joint PhD of Karolinska Institute, Sweden and Makerere University, Uganda, in suicidology and psychiatric epidemiology. Dr Ovuga worked at Makerere University, serving that institution in various capacities including being Head of the Department of Psychiatry, and member of several committees of Senate from 1989 to 2006. Outside his home country, Uganda, Dr Ovuga worked as a psychiatrist in Mathare Mental Hospital in Nairobi, and in Western Kenya from 1981 to 1984, and the Transkei homeland of South Africa from 1984 to 1989. Apart from active administrative duties, Dr Ovuga developed a vibrant research ethics review system in Uganda and he served as the Founding Chair of the Forum of Institutional Review Committees in Uganda (FICU), and subsequently known as Forum of Research Ethics Committees in Uganda (FRECU). In his retirement, Dr Ovuga now serves as the Founding Chief Executive Officer of an agricultural research company, Bomvitae Agro Industries Limited (BAIL). In his spare time Dr. Ovuga serves as review editor of two journals, and reviewer for several other journals.
