In this work, a methodology based on the evidence theory is presented for quantifying the epistemic uncertainty of damage assessment procedure. The proposed methodology is applied to seismic damage assessment procedure while considering various sources of uncertainty emanating from experimental force-displacement data of reinforced concrete column. In order to alleviate the computational difficulties in the evidence theory-based uncertainty quantification analysis (UQ), a differential evolution-based computational strategy for efficient calculation of the propagated belief structure in a system with evidence theory is presented here. Residuals play an essential role in regression diagnostics; no analysis is being complete without a thorough examination of residuals. The residuals should show a trend that tends to confirm the assumptions made in performing the regression analysis, or failing them should not show a tendency that denies them. Although there are numerical statistical means of verifying observed discrepancies, statisticians often prefer a visual examination of residual graphs as a more informative and certainly more convenient methodology. When dealing with small samples, the use of the graphic techniques can be very useful. In this chapter, we combine the advantages of multiscale partial least squares (MSPLSs) modeling with those of the univariate EWMA (exponentially weighted moving average) monitoring chart, which results in an improved fault detection system, especially for detecting small faults in highly correlated, multivariate data. Toward this end, we applied EWMA chart to the output residuals obtained from MSPLS model. with various cardiac diseases have improved in the last years, there still remains a significant proportion of patients with unfavorable prognoses. The evaluation of these patients necessitates effective imaging techniques in both diagnosis and long-term follow-up. Even though Cardiac Magnetic Resonance imaging is currently the imaging modality of choice for tissue characterization, advanced echocardiography represents a modern alternative. Speckle tracking echocardiography can be used to assess myocardial deformation at both segmental and global levels. Since distinct myocardial pathologies affect deformation differently, information about the underlying tissue can be offered by strain imaging. Echocardiography advances also show promising results in the improvement of diagnostic accuracy, management, and follow-up and a major advantage of echocardiography over other imaging modalities is the ability to use it in real-time, in the cardiac catheterization laboratory, allowing for the performance of imaging immediately before, during, and after interventional procedures. Furthermore, the prevalence of adult congenital heart disease continues to grow due to advances in surgical and diagnostic techniques. Echocardiography has proven to be a useful tool in the diagnosis and follow-up of these patients, both after percutaneous and surgical procedures, and its utility has expanded significantly due to the development of better technology. In addition, stress echocardiography could be useful in the evaluation of several cardiac diseases and should be preferred over other imaging modalities due to the lower cost, wider availability, and radiation-free nature.
\r\n\tThis book intends to provide the reader with a comprehensive overview of the current state-of-the-art novel imaging techniques by focusing on the most important evidence-based developments in this area.
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) that caused pandemic started in December 2019 in Wuhan, China [1, 2, 3]. The novel coronavirus responsible for this respiratory disease was identified to be the member of the Coronaviridae family known to cause infections in humans called severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) [1]. SARS-CoV-2 is reported to be found in bats, and the infections occurred in humans because of the intermediate host, the pangolin [2]. SARS-CoV-2 is the third coronavirus reported to cause the respiratory disease pandemic after severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) [2]. COVID-19 disease spreads from human to human by respiratory droplets [4], and the symptoms include dry cough, fever, fatigue, body aches, dyspnea, chills and shivering, sputum production, diarrhea, nausea, nasal congestion, rhinorrhea, and loss of speech or movement [3, 5, 6, 7]. To date, COVID-19 is still the cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, accounting to 409 confirmed positive cases and 5.8 million deaths between 7 and 13 February 2022 [8]. Among the African countries, South Africa (SA) reported the highest numbers of new mortality between 7 and 13 February 2022 [8].
Vaccines were quickly developed for the prevention of COVID-19 pandemic [9], but there is no specific treatment available [4] as vaccinated individuals can still contact and transmit the COVID-19 virus. COVID-19 symptom management is mainly supported with oxygen therapy, steroids, antivirals, antibiotics, and anti-inflammatory agents, including chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine [5, 6]. However, antibiotics, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory drugs are reported to be the cause of health problems due to their toxicities [6]. Africa has a long historic record on the use of traditional medicinal plants (TMPs), and phytomedicine is preferred as 80–90% of rural population rely on medicinal plants for primary healthcare [10]. Fortunately, the World Health Organization (WHO) promotes the use of traditional, complementary, and alternative medicine on condition that their efficacy, safety, and quality are scientifically reported [1, 11]. Therefore, considering the potential of TMPs as alternative and complementary conventional drugs for COVID-19 management is an important research topic during the current situation of COVID-19 pandemic [12]. Several studies were conducted on TMPs and their pharmacological activities against COVID-19 [10, 13, 14, 15], and this review is, therefore, aimed at the documentation of TMPs that can be used in adjuvant, prophylactic, and management therapy of COVID-19.
TMPs have become the subject of interest in the era of COVID-19 pandemic, and various researchers have conducted studies based on selecting TMPs commonly used traditionally to treat fever, cold, and flu symptoms [13, 14].
Active secondary metabolites of these TMPs have immunomodulatory effect and can reduce cytokine production against viral infections [6]. TMPs with potential antiviral activity against SARS-CoV-2 were identified as
TMPs reported in this review article target various stages in viral life cycle starting from the prevention of viral entry to the E6 cells, halting the fusion of the S protein, the inhibition of SARS-CoV-2 receptor-binding domain, the prevention of viral replication, and the transcription by targeting SARS-CoV-2 RNA-dependent RNA polymerase and major proteases [6, 15, 17, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25]. The diagrams in Figure 1 show strategies for the prevention and management of COVID-19 using TMPs.

Future aspects include the extraction of the medicinal plants listed in Table 1, the isolation of pure compounds as well as their fingerprinting and identification, and the confirmation of their mechanisms of action [72]. Further testing of extracts in animal models and investigations of effective and safe dosages, route administration, drug administration intervals, pharmacokinetics, and mechanisms of action are required before the use of medicinal plants discussed in this review can be advocated to be used for COVID-19 patients [7].

Material properties are continually being improved to meet safety and operational standards in line with prevailing technological developments. Modern technological requirements, together with the consumers’ demands for systems and machines that are more energy efficient, stronger, light-weight, cost-effective, etc., dictate that the search for new and advanced materials will remain a subject of interest all the time. The difficulty in designing materials for such stringent specifications cannot be overstated, owing to the conflicting nature of these specifications. Aluminium metal matrix composites (AlMMCs) are a class of materials that have proven successful in meeting most of the rigorous specifications in applications where light-weight, high stiffness and moderate strength are the requisite properties. With a variety of reinforcement materials and flexibility in their primary processing, AlMMCs offer great potential for the development of composites with the desired properties for certain applications. Another aim is the determination of molecular structure, interactions and processes including structure-function relationships at cellular level using a variety of TEM techniques with resolution in atomic to nanometre range. Even with the best transmission electron microscope, it is impossible to obtain real results without optimal sample preparation, respecting both the structure and the antigenicity preservation. Preparation techniques for high-resolution study of both macromolecular complex and organelles within cellular complex are based on fast cryoimmobilisation process, where the sample is in the most native, hydrated state. Next, thin samples are directly visualised under cryo-transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM), while thicker samples require a thinning step via cryo-electron microscopy of vitreous sections (CEMOVIS) or cryo-focused ion beam (cryo-FIB) before visualisation. Alternatively, vitrified samples are freeze substituted and embedded in chosen resin for room temperature ultramicrotomy. This preparation technique is suitable for morphological study, 3D analysis of cellular interior and immunoelectron microscopy. A different route for immunolocalisation study is cryosectioning according to the Tokuyasu technique that is a choice for rare or methacrylate-sensitive antigens. Most recently, new hybrid techniques have been developed for difficult-to-fix organisms and antigens or labile and anoxia-sensitive tissues. Another preparation technique is, the oldest but still important, conventional chemical fixation dedicated in a wide range of research interest, involving morphological and immunolocalisation study. An antenna is one of them; it means that it must be conformal to the body of device, reduced in size, and capable to operating at multiple frequencies of mobile communication systems that have been operating on one, so-called smart device. Nowadays, there are many technical solutions applied in the antenna construction to satisfy of those requirements. There are microstrip antenna technology miniaturized by means of high-permittivity dielectric substrate, using shorting wall, shorting pins, some deformation, as the fractal geometry is, and others. However, these methods have disadvantage such as narrow bandwidth and low gain. A new solution that is of great interest to designers is the use of electromagnetic metamaterials for antenna design. After his studies, he chose an academic career and devoted his energy to the teaching of physics to first, second, and third-year students. After positions as a lecturer at the University of Port Elizabeth, he accepted a position as Associate Professor at the University of Pretoria, South Africa.\r\n\r\nIn 1992, he motivates the concept of 'television and computer-based education” as means to reach large student numbers with only the best of teaching expertise and publishes an article on the concept in the SA Journal of Higher Education of 1993 (and later in 2003). The University of Pretoria subsequently approved a series of test projects on the concept with outreach to Mamelodi and Eerste Rust in 1993. In 1994, the University established a 'Unit for Telematic Education ' as a support section for multiple faculties at the University of Pretoria. In subsequent years, the concept of 'telematic education” subsequently becomes well established in academic circles in South Africa, grew in popularity, and is adopted by many universities and colleges throughout South Africa as a medium of enhancing education and training, as a method to reaching out to far out communities, and as a means to enhance study from the home environment.\r\n\r\nProfessor Snyman in subsequent years pursued research in semiconductor physics, semiconductor devices, microelectronics, and optoelectronics.\r\n\r\nIn 2000 he joined the TUT as a full professor. Here served for a period as head of the Department of Electronic Engineering. Here he makes contributions to solar energy development, microwave and optoelectronic device development, silicon photonics, as well as contributions to new mobile telecommunication systems and network planning in SA.\r\n\r\nCurrently, he teaches electronics and telecommunications at the TUT to audiences ranging from first-year students to Ph.D. level.\r\n\r\nFor his research in the field of 'Silicon Photonics” since 1990, he has published (as author and co-author) about thirty internationally reviewed articles in scientific journals, contributed to more than forty international conferences, about 25 South African provisional patents (as inventor and co-inventor), 8 PCT international patent applications until now. Dr. Ortiz is the author, co-author, or editor of books, book chapters, textbooks, research monographs and technical reports, and refereed journal articles. He is listed in Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Finance and Business, Who’s Who in Business Higher Education, Who’s Who in American Education, and Who’s Who Directory of Economists. Dr. Ortiz has been a Fulbright Scholar and an MSI Leadership Fellow with the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.
