Direct selection for morphological and physiological parameters related to soil WLIS tolerance has been used in developing drought tolerant soybean cultivars [6]. Drought tolerant mechanisms in soybean have been closely associated with the rooting system and/or rooting pattern [7, 8]. The response of root traits to the immediate effects of soil WLIS determines the soybean plants’ defence to drought [7, 9]. This is because the root system is responsible for exploring and acquisition of all the water the plant requires from the soil [10]. Plants sense water shortage around their roots and respond instantaneously by sending chemical signals to shoots to initiate various adaptive responses to soil WLIS [11].
Genetic variation for consultative ability and phenotypic plasticity in root growth patterns have been reported in soybean [12, 13]. Although root traits have shown strong potential in breeding for drought tolerance in soybean [6], the laborious and difficult procedure involved to phenotype roots without breaking the tap root is a big setback [14]. However, a “deep-pot” root screening method, which facilitates removal of the root system with minimal damage and evaluation of the soybean root architecture, has been developed [9]. This screening method facilitates root evaluation efficiently at seedling stage. The present study was conducted with the aim of discriminating drought tolerant and –sensitive genotypes through root- and shoot morphology. Specific objectives were to determine the responses of seedling shoot- and root length, dry matter and root length density among soybean genotypes grown under soil WLIS using the “deep-pot” method. Study using the same four PANNAR SEED® (Pty) LTD soybean cultivars, under similar experimental conditions as at the University of Free State, South Africa has not been done before.
Glasshouse trials were conducted in duplicate (trial 1 from 06/09/2014 to 07/10/2014 and trial 2 from 06/11/2014 to 08/12/2014) at the Department of Soil, Crop and Climate Sciences of the University of the Free State, South Africa in the summer season. The plant material used included three drought tolerant genotypes (BL1, BL4 and CV2) and one susceptible genotype (CV3) obtained from the PANNAR SEED® (PTY) LTD breeding programme (Table 1). The plant materials in the study are grouped in the medium quick (5.7), medium (6.7) and medium late (7.0–7.4) maturity groups (Table 1) [15].

Maturity group (length of the growing season of a cultivar, mostly determined by day length and temperatures): 5.7 = medium quick, 6.7 = medium, 7.0 &7.4 = medium late.
Glasshouse trials were conducted in deep transparent polythene pots (10 cm diameter and 110 cm length) according to [9] with modifications. Polythene pots were placed in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) tubes (10 cm diameter and 10 cm length) for support and the pots were filled with soil, leaving a 5 cm space at the top (Figure 1). Soil used was an aridic ustothent soil (Bainsvlei 2300) with a reddish brown colour and a fine sandy texture, and contained 8–14% clay and 2–4% silt [16]. Pots were fully saturated with water and left to drain. After seven days, three seeds from each genotype were sown in the pots.

The pots were laid out in a randomised complete block design with six replications. After germination, seedlings were thinned to one per pot. For the first 12 days after sowing, plants were watered daily with 100 ml of water to ensure strong seedlings, thereafter soil WLIS was induced by irrigating 100 ml every third day. Twenty-one days after sowing (Figure 1), shoot length (SL) (cm), was measured from the soil contact point to the tip of the plant and number of trifoliate leaves was counted. Shoot dry weight (biomass) (g) was recorded after drying the shoots in the glasshouse at room temperature for 72 hours.
For root measurements, the polythene pots were carefully taken from the PVC tubes and cut longitudinally in order to safely isolate the whole root system from the soil. Tap root length (TRL) was measured on intact roots from the soil contact point to the tip. Total root dry weight (root biomass) (g) was recorded after separating the roots from the soil by washing the samples on a 0.5 mm sieve. The root samples were then dried at room temperature, weighed and root biomass determined. After recording tap root length, shoot and root biomass, all roots including tap root and primary roots were cut into 10 cm sections, corresponding to the actual depths from the tubes. For root length density, root samples in the 10 cm sections were counted using a modified infra-red root counter [17] and were converted into root length per soil layer using a standard curve generated from standard samples and actual root length. Mass of the total root per layer was used to calculate the root weight density per layer.
Data was statistically analysed using GenStat Release 18 statistical package [18]. A combined analysis of variance (ANOVA) (Table 2) was conducted for the duplicated trials on the data collected to partition the different sources of variation. Means were separated using least significant difference (LSD) test (Table 2).

Significant genotype differences were observed for shoot length (p < 0.01), number of leaves (p < 0.01), tap root length (p < 0.01) and root-to-shoot length ratio (TRL/SL) (p < 0.05) (Table 2). Trial effects were significant for shoot and root dry weight (p < 0.01). No significant genotype by treatment (G×T) interaction effects were observed for any of the traits measured (Table 2).
This suggested that genotypes responded the same between the two trials for all traits studied. Tolerant genotypes BL1 and BL4 grouped together for shoot length (both large), while the other tolerant genotype CV2 grouped with the sensitive genotype CV3 (Table 3). This, together with shoot dry weight (non-significant genotype effects), indicated that the sensitive genotype CV3 generally showed a good shoot biomass and was not different from the tolerant genotypes, especially BL4 and CV2 (Table 3).

The three tolerant genotypes (BL1, BL4 and CV2) ranked in the top three positions for both tap root length and TRL/SL ratio, while the drought sensitive genotype (CV3) ranked last (Table 3). This suggested that the drought sensitive genotype developed a shorter tap root (as indicated in Figure 2) or had a reduced root elongation rate compared to the tolerant genotypes due to the soil WLIS. In Figure 2 it is evident that the three tolerant genotypes had longer root systems than the sensitive genotype (CV3).

The root architecture system under soil WLIS was investigated by determining the distribution of the root length density (cm cm−3) and dry matter (root weight density) (mg cm−3) through the soil profile (Figures 3 and 4). Results showed that the root systems of all four cultivars were mostly contained in the top 0–40 cm soil profile (Figures 3 and 4). There were no marked differences in root distribution among the tolerant genotypes (BL1, BL4 and CV2) (Figures 3 and 4). The tolerant genotypes’ roots explored the whole soil profile to the deepest part (Figures 3 and 4). On the other hand, it was evident that the sensitive genotype (CV3) had the same root distribution (root length density and dry matter) like the tolerant genotypes in the top 0–90 cm soil profile (Figures 3 and 4). However, the sensitive genotype’s roots could not explore the deeper profile beyond the 90 cm depth mark (Figures 3 and 4). This suggested that the tolerant genotypes, unlike the sensitive one, could endure the soil WLIS by exploring moisture trapped in the deep soil profiles.

Drought stress tended to increase biomass partitioning to the roots. This was demonstrated by the increase in the tap root length to shoot length ratio (TRL/SL) especially among the tolerant soybean genotypes (Figures 3 and 4). Similar trends were reported by [19] using a deep-rooted pot system with 24 soybean cultivars including exotic plant introductions (PI) lines in where it was suggested that TRL/SL determines the effective proportion of the roots supporting the above ground shoots. This is significant for survival under soil WLIS conditions. The large tap root length to shoot length ratio observed for the drought tolerant genotypes might have translated to the ability of the tolerant cultivars to access and get more edaphic resources per unit of the above ground shoot [20, 21]. A large TRL/SL suggests a large root surface area per unit of shoot length and this significantly increases the capacity of the tolerant genotypes to efficiently absorb and utilise soil water per unit dry matter [10]. The drought sensitive soybean genotype indicated to have a lower ability to penetrate the deeper soil (Table 3).
The seedling genotypic variation observed between drought tolerant and –sensitive genotypes for root and shoot traits, in response to soil WLIS (Table 3) agrees with results of [7, 11, 22, 23]. Drought tolerant soybean genotypes were associated with a deep-rooting phenotype and a large root-to-shoot ratio (length and/or mass), unlike the drought sensitive soybean genotypes (Table 3). Thus, drought tolerant genotypes tend to demonstrate a phenomenon called “balanced growth”, whereby plants respond to drought by stimulating or maintaining root growth while effectively reducing shoot growth [24]. Increases in root versus shoot growth under drought conditions enhance the genotype’s drought coping ability due to increased root-to-leaf surface ratio, continued production of new root tips, and enhancement of plant capacity for acquiring water to support existing shoots [14]. The observed shift in allometry under drought stress and the ability of the tolerant genotypes to grow roots according to the distribution of available soil water thus increase the productivity of tolerant genotypes under soil WLIS conditions. This has been attributed to the action of ethylene and abscisic acid in the tolerant soybean genotypes [25, 26] and is triggered by soil WLIS conditions.
Soybean genotypes showed varying seedling shoot- and root morphology in response to soil WLIS conditions. The tolerant and sensitive genotypes did not differ much for shoot- and root biomass but significant differences were observed for shoot length, tap root length and tap root length to shoot length ratio. Drought tolerant genotypes showed deep rooting ability and larger root-to-shoot ratios compared to the drought sensitive genotype. Consequently, the drought tolerant genotypes increased biomass partitioning to the roots as a coping mechanism to soil WLIS. The “deep-pot” system was effectively used to phenotype the roots of soybean seedlings in a non-destructive manner. The system showed potential to differentiate between drought tolerant and -sensitive genotypes at seedling growth stage. However, in future studies more genotypes and more root traits need to be analysed in order to efficiently classify genotypes as drought tolerant or drought sensitive.

Ruthenium is a precious metal that belongs to the platinum-group elements [1]. As ruthenium can adopt various oxidation numbers, its coordination complexes adopt a wide variety of oxidation states from -II to VIII [2]. When nitrogen-based donor ligands are coordinated to a central ruthenium atom, the resulting ruthenium complexes generally prefer the +II and + III oxidation states, but occasionally also adopt the +IV and + V states. Arguably the most studied Ru complexes with nitrogen-based donor ligands are those that contain the hexaammineruthenium dication, [Ru(NH3)6]2+, and the tris(2,2′-bipyridine)ruthenium(II) dication, [Ru(bpy)3]2+(bpy = 2,2′-bipyridine) [3, 4, 5, 6]. [Ru(bpy)3]2+ was first reported by Burstall [7] and is easily obtained from the reaction of RuCl3•nH2O with an excess amount of bpy in aqueous ethanol. [Ru(bpy)3]2+ exhibits a stable low-spin t2g6 electronic configuration as well as a reversible one-electron oxidation at +1.29 V (vs SCE) and successive one-electron reductions at −1.33 V, −1.52 V, −1.76 V, and − 2.4 V vs. SCE; the oxidation is a Ru(II/III) metal-center-based process, while the reductions occur on the bpy ligands. [Ru(bpy)3]2+ exhibits a metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) band at 452 nm and bright luminescence at 612 nm (lifetime: 600 ns) under MLCT excitation. This luminescence arises from the triplet MLCT photoexcited state, which allows this complex to serve as a photosensitizer for a wide scope of photoenergy conversion processes and as a photocatalyst for organic transformations [8]. Therefore, it is hardly surprising that during the past five decades, numerous studies on photoactive [Ru(bpy)3]2+ complexes have been reported [3]. Surface modification plays an important role in controlling the electron-transfer events and chemical reactivity in photocatalysis, as well as the charge-transport process in heterojunctions. Recently, several reviews of the applications of surface modification toward dye-sensitized solar cells and electrochemical catalysts for hydrogen/oxygen-evolution reactions have been published [21, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34], showing the importance of such interdisciplinary research. In the area of solar-energy conversion, Grätzel-type dye-sensitized solar cells composed of mesoporous TiO2 on fluorine-doped SnO2 (FTO) with immobilized Ru complexes that contain 2,2′-bipyridyl-4,4′-dicarboxylate and other bpy-derived ligands have been developed [35]. Interestingly, the electron-injection efficiency from the photoexcited-state Ru complex to TiO2 was found to strongly dependent on the anchoring group [34, 36, 37].
Given that the adsorption strength of a Ru complex on a surface depends on the combination of the anchoring group and the surface material, judicious selection of both is necessary for effective surface functionalization. Recently, indium-tin oxide (ITO)-coated glass or polymer substrates have been employed in a wide variety of electronic display devices such as organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) [38]. Transparent ITO electrodes are also employed as cell windows for spectroelectrochemistry. Therefore, ITO is a suitable substrate for monitoring both the electrochemical and spectrochemical changes in redox-active Ru complexes immobilized on its surface. The phosphonic acid group, which is known to immobilize on ITO electrodes, has been employed to anchor the Ru complexes [39]. Furthermore, organic phosphonic acids are known to bind zirconium(IV) ions to form a solid two-dimensional layer structure, [40]. which demonstrates their suitability for use in a layer-by-layer growth method based on redox-active metal complexes. Therefore, we developed several new tridentate benzimidazole ligands with phosphonic acid or phosphonate ester anchor groups (Figure 5). Alkylation of the imino N–H groups of the benzimidazole moieties using bromoalkyl-diethylphosphonate derivatives furnished chelating benzimidazolyl ligands with ethyl-protected phosphonates, which were used for the synthesis of Ru complexes [41]. After the ethyl-protected phosphonate Ru complexes had been purified, the diethyl phosphonate groups were deprotected to provide the corresponding Ru complexes with phosphonic acid groups. Ru complexes are substitutionally inert, and the octahedral coordination geometry around the Ru ion is maintained throughout the Ru(II/III) redox reaction. Therefore, they can be immobilized on a surface to design redox-active molecular devices. When three bidentate ligands are coordinated to an octahedral Ru complex, the formation of Δ and Λ optical isomers is possible, but in the case of Ru complexes surrounded by two tridentate ligands with C2v symmetry, no optical isomers do not exist. Hence, surface-confined Ru complexes that contain tridentate ligands with C2v symmetry such as 2,6-bis(benzimidazolyl)pyridine with phosphonic acid anchors are often selected for surface immobilization [21, 42]. Furthermore, the molecular orientation of Ru complexes self-assembled on a surface is crucial to the construction of further layered structures. To maintain the vertical orientation of the Ru complexes on a surface, free-standing multipodal anchor groups with phosphonic acid have been developed over the last two decades. The formation of well-ordered zirconium(IV) bisphosphonate multilayer films is a well-known method for LbL assemblies on a solid surface that has been developed by Mallouk and others [40]. This method is based on the reconstitution of a two-dimensional layered compound, Zr(HPO3)2, on a gold surface via self-assembly of molecular units with metal ions. Starting from self-assembled 4-mercaptobutylphosphonic acid on the gold surface as a primer layer, alternate immersion of the modified gold substrate into a zirconium(IV) oxychloride solution and a bisphosphonic acid solution leads to multilayer films composed of a two-dimensional zirconium–phosphonate framework structure via LbL growth [40].

As portable electronic devices continue to proliferate, cost-effective cheap energy storage devices that are small, flexible, and low cost and provide high performance during the charging and discharging cycle are in high demand. Molecular-based supercapacitors are promising candidates in terms of these requirements. Redox-active Ru complexes are suitable for the fabrication of energy storage devices, since multilayer molecular Ru assemblies obtained via the LbL method can be scaled by increasing the number of layers, which leads to enhancement of the electrical capacitance in such films [57].

On the other hand, when all four imino N–H protons on the benzimidazole moieties were protected by N–Me groups, the capacitance decreased by 77% compared to that of the original PCET-type capacitor. This result strongly suggests that the proton movement plays a more important role than the anion movement in the charge storage. Furthermore, the proton movement accompanying the redox reaction in the Ru multilayer films on the ITO electrode was confirmed using a pH-indicator probe in aqueous solution. In this type of LbL films composed of Ru complexes that exhibit PCET-type redox reactions, the capacitance increases almost linearly with the number of layers (Figure 21) [20].
To obtain proton rocking-chair-type redox capacitors that use protons as the charge carriers, the quinone/hydroquinone couple is often used [52, 64, 65, 66, 67]. However, at neutral pH, the electron–proton transfer rate of the quinone/hydroquinone couple is slower than that of the Ru(II/III) couple. The use of the LbL method to fabricate multilayered structures of redox-active Ru complexes that exhibit PCET is advantageous, as the storage capacity can be enhanced by increasing the number of redox-active modular units on demand.

The idea of molecular devices is based on a next-generation paradigm to overcome the limitations associated with Moore’s law, which states that the number of transistors per silicon chip doubles every year, and the use of individual molecules as active electronic components. The first single molecular device was the theoretical proposal of a molecular diode by Aviram and Ratner; [68] subsequently, the concept of molecular electronic devices was further developed by Carter [69]. Various molecules have demonstrated basic electronic functionality as switches, as diodes for rectification, and as optical devices, storage devices, and sensing devices for future information technologies [54, 70]. The recent experimental development of single-molecular conductance measurements using metal–molecule–metal junctions [71] has opened a new avenue for the realization of molecular electronic devices through the judicious selection of molecules [70, 72, 73, 74, 75, 76]. Ru complexes are substitutionally inert in both the Ru(II) and Ru(III) oxidation states, and also exhibit fast self-exchange ET rates due to the small reorganization energy of the Ru(II/III) couple. Therefore, the use of a mixed-valence Ru(II)–Ru(III) complex as a perturbing motif branching from a conducting molecular wire has been proposed by Carter. Here, two molecular devices based on Ru complexes are discussed; the first is a Ru-complex molecular junction that exhibits rectification switching in response to humidity, and the other is a two-terminal memristor device based on the PCET reactions of Ru complexes.

Further important applications for ruthenium complexes include photoredox catalysts and dye-sensitized solar cells. In particular, Ru(bpy)3 or Ru(tpy)2 derivatives have been used as photosensitizer dyes on mesoporous TiO2 surfaces in Grätzel-type solar cells. Over the past two decades, many Ru complexes with phosphonate anchors have been reported, [33] and many Ru dyes derived from Ru(bpy)3 derivatives that contain phosphonate anchors (Figure 30). Additionally, Ru-2,6-bis(benzimidazole-2-yl)pyridine complexes have been employed as photoredox catalysts [85, 86]. The Ru–benzimidazole bond is known to be more stable than the Ru–pyridine bond in the photoexcited state, rendering such Ru-benzimidazole complexes promising candidates for photoelectrochemical redox catalysts.

Substitutionally inert ruthenium complexes bearing benzimidazole derivatives have unique electrochemical and photochemical properties. In particular, proton-coupled electron-transfer in ruthenium–benzimidazole complexes endows them with rich redox chemistry and makes them useful as a modular unit for redox mediators or reactive sites for switching by external stimuli. In this chapter, the role of PCET reactions on Ru–benzimidazole complexes in energy-storage applications and the tuning of metal–metal interactions in aqueous solution was emphasized first. Based on this knowledge acquired from solution chemistry, the chemistry of Ru complexes confined on an electrode surface via their self-assembling from solution for the fabrication of the surface functional molecular devices on electrodes was discussed. Indium-tin oxide (ITO) is often chosen as the electrode due to its transparency and wide use as a substrate in electronics. To immobilize the redox-active Ru complexes on an ITO electrode, tetrapod phosphonic acid anchor groups are often incorporated into tridentate 2,6-bis(benzimidazole-2-yl)pyridine or benzene ligands, which enables the construction of free-standing self-assembled monolayer structures on an ITO electrode. Starting from this monolayer as a primer layer, multilayer films can be constructed by the LbL layer growth method. The resulting multilayers using redox-active Ru complexes as a modular unit exhibited long-range electron transport even in films with over 60 layers (∼100 nm thick) through the “stepping-stone” mechanism. Furthermore, a combinatorial approach to LbL layer growth can be used to obtain bespoke functional heterolayer films via material design. Using this strategy, blocking of electron transfer or rectification can be made to occur in such Ru complex heterolayer films, which results in charge trapping; the trapped electrons can subsequently be released via photo-irradiation, which leads to the new concept of photo-responsive memory devices. IK covers diverse areas of importance for society, spanning issues concerned with the quality of life - from agriculture and water to health. The IK resident in India and China have high relevance to rural life, especially given the level of engagement with agricultural and health technologies. The goal is to establish a heuristic whereby IK can be reviewed and evaluated within particular contexts to determine if the IKS can lead to the development of appropriate technology (AT) addressing that need sustainably. This chapter focuses on local forest resource management and its suitability in the local social-cultural context in central Seram, east Indonesia. First, I describe how the well-structured forest resource use is constructed and maintained through the indigenous resource management practices based on ‘supernatural enforce mechanism’. After that, I investigate what social-ecological roles the IRM in Amanioho has, and how IRM practices relate to the social-cultural context of an upland community in central Seram. Survey questionnaire, observations, focus group discussions, and key informant interview were employed to obtain data. Field data were analyzed and interpreted using appropriate analytical tools and procedures. The result revealed that the Borana herders have time-tested weather forecasting experience of using astrological, intestinal, plant, and animal body language indicators. Astrological and intestinal readings that need special training and local expertise are known as Urgii Elaltus and Uchuu, respectively. Forecast information is disseminated using the Borana sociocultural institutions. Based on the disseminated forecast information, the Borana herders take measures such as strengthening enclosure, storing hay, migrating with animals, destocking, and changing schedules of social and cultural festivities such as wedding. The precision and credibility of traditional weather forecast steadily declined and led to repeated faulty predictions. Poor documentation and knowledge transfer system, influence of religion and modern education, premature death of forecast experts, and expansion of alcoholism were identified as causes undermining the vitality of Borana indigenous weather forecast. To that end we continually find convergences and divergences in clothing and accessories, food, traditional dances, homes, and traditional beauty cosmetics, between the past and present. This chapter seeks to explore whether the Nama people have always used money to acquire the aforementioned past? If not, what have they done right in the past to acquire all these items? These are one of the few questions this chapter seeks to explore and understand, and the role Nama entrepreneurial activities play for their own socio-economic advancement. Critical discourse can lead to a better understanding and appreciation of entrepreneurship among indigenous people in Namibia. This will in turn result in an enhanced understanding of the role entrepreneurship and culture can play in both a local and international context. After a brief introduction to Namibia and the Nama people, the cultural values and entrepreneurial initiatives of the Nama people are discussed, followed by discussions, recommendations and conclusions. On the basis of sociocultural theory and the theory of the diffusion and adoption of technological innovations, the study on the cultural identity of the ethnolinguistic group, whose social platform is the “uses and customs,” is carried out. As a result of this research, the descriptive analysis is presented, detailing the effect of information and communication technologies (ICTs) on the situation of the vulnerable and disadvantaged group. Likewise, cultural elements have been identified that allow the formulation of a model for the development and inclusion of the ethnic minority. An educational strategy is designed and implemented through the model. Infectious Diseases",scope:"Fungi are ubiquitous and there are almost no non-pathogenic fungi. Fungal infectious illness prevalence and prognosis are determined by the exposure between fungi and host, host immunological state, fungal virulence, and early and accurate diagnosis and treatment. \r\nPatients with both congenital and acquired immunodeficiency are more likely to be infected with opportunistic mycosis. Fungal infectious disease outbreaks are common during the post- disaster rebuilding era, which is characterised by high population density, migration, and poor health and medical conditions.\r\nSystemic or local fungal infection is mainly associated with the fungi directly inhaled or inoculated in the environment during the disaster. The most common fungal infection pathways are human to human (anthropophilic), animal to human (zoophilic), and environment to human (soilophile). Diseases are common as a result of widespread exposure to pathogenic fungus dispersed into the environment. \r\nFungi that are both common and emerging are intertwined. In Southeast Asia, for example, Talaromyces marneffei is an important pathogenic thermally dimorphic fungus that causes systemic mycosis. Widespread fungal infections with complicated and variable clinical manifestations, such as Candida auris infection resistant to several antifungal medicines, Covid-19 associated with Trichoderma, and terbinafine resistant dermatophytosis in India, are among the most serious disorders. \r\nInappropriate local or systemic use of glucocorticoids, as well as their immunosuppressive effects, may lead to changes in fungal infection spectrum and clinical characteristics. Hematogenous candidiasis is a worrisome issue that affects people all over the world, particularly ICU patients. CARD9 deficiency and fungal infection have been major issues in recent years. Invasive aspergillosis is associated with a significant death rate. Special attention should be given to endemic fungal infections, identification of important clinical fungal infections advanced in yeasts, filamentous fungal infections, skin mycobiome and fungal genomes, and immunity to fungal infections.\r\nIn addition, endemic fungal diseases or uncommon fungal infections caused by Mucor irregularis, dermatophytosis, Malassezia, cryptococcosis, chromoblastomycosis, coccidiosis, blastomycosis, histoplasmosis, sporotrichosis, and other fungi, should be monitored. \r\nThis topic includes the research progress on the etiology and pathogenesis of fungal infections, new methods of isolation and identification, rapid detection, drug sensitivity testing, new antifungal drugs, schemes and case series reports.
