These gram positive bacteria resembled streptococci but had specific nutritional growth requirements. Since their first identification, over the years nomenclature of NVS changed several times based on DNA-DNA hybridization studies and 16S rRNA sequence analysis. They were first included in the genus
NVS are members of the normal flora of human pharynx, human urogenital and intestinal tracts [2].
Infective endocarditis caused by NVS is rare, causing approximately 2% of all cases of infective endocarditis [3]. Over 125 cases of infective endocarditis caused by
Although endocarditis and bacteremia are the most common infections associated by
Ophthalmological infections have been encountered, ranging from keratitis to endophthalmitis [6]. NVS are known to cause corneal ulcers [7], vitreous infections [8] and infectious crystalline keratopathy [9]. Orthopedic infections, including prosthesis infection, septic arthritis, discitis and sacroiliitis have been reported [10, 11, 12]. Synovial biopsy sample from a patient with culture negative endocarditis also yielded NVS [13]. NVS are also associated with central nervous system infections; more commonly brain abscesses but rarely meningitis [14], subarachnoid hemorrhage [15] and intracranial aneurysms [3] have been reported. CNS infections have been commonly linked to embolic phenomena, neurosurgical instrumentation and immunosuppression [10, 16]. NVS have been isolated from patients with otitis media [1], otitis externa [2], sinusitis [17], parapneumonic effusion [18], cirrhosis [19], peritonitis [20], pancreatic abscess [21], bacteremia associated with postpartum or postabortal sepsis [19], tubo-ovarian abscess [22], breast implant associated infection [23], wound infections, and vaginal discharge [24]. Endarteritis caused by
Nutritionally variant streptococci were first described by Frenkel and Hirsch in 1961 from blood cultures of cases of subacute bacterial endocarditis and from otitis media. These cell wall deficient, L form ‘streptococci’ were noted to grow in satellite colonies around other bacteria requiring substances secreted by other bacteria for growth [1]. ‘Abiotrophia’ means life nutrition deficiency, referring to the need of specific nutrients in media for growth of these bacteria [26]. They are catalase-negative, oxidase-negative, facultative anaerobic gram positive bacteria [27]. They often form white-gray, non-hemolytic colonies. These organisms hardly grow in culture media that streptococci ordinarily grow, such as sheep blood agar. They require supplementation of L-cysteine or pyridoxal HCl. In the absence of these supplements, NVS can also grow forming satellite colonies adjacent to streaks of helper bacteria such as
Bouvet et al. in 1989 showed that NVS could be divided into two groups,
In 1995, Kawamura et al. proposed that these distinct species be transferred to a new genus,
Finally, in 2000, Collins et al. proposed the taxonomy of NVS that we use today. They pointed out that genus
Bacterial attachment to damaged heart valves is the key factor in infective endocarditis. Intact vascular endothelium can resist the development of endocarditis [33]. Experimental animal models showed that when catheter induced endocardial damage is produced; these endocardial lesions can be infected by direct inoculation of bacteria or by intravenous inoculation [34]. Pathophysiology of infective endocarditis typically would start with endothelial cell denudation, followed by exposure of underlying extracellular matrix (ECM) and finally binding of fibrin and platelets [33]. Extracellular matrix proteins are exposed during damage to the cardiac endothelium providing potential sites of attachment for virulent organisms [35]
Some groups of NVS are more pathogenic and other groups are less pathogenic. Highly pathogenic
By binding to the extracellular matrix proteins, bacteria are able to adhere to the damaged endocardium and subsequently producing colonization and infection. ECM binding ability however is not the sole indicator of pathogenicity. Some strains of NVS have high infectivity without significant binding to the ECM proteins suggesting other mechanisms involved in pathogenesis. Other mechanisms of endocardial infectivity of NVS remains to be discovered [5].
As a group, NVS have heterogenous properties of pathogenicity.
Okada et al. noted that [5] NVS isolates from endocarditis patients and from normal oral flora both had the ability to cause infective endocarditis.
Identification of
NVS show morphologic variations depending on the pyridoxal concentrations in the growth medium [39]. Due to the difficulties in identification of these bacteria, it is crucial for microbiology staff to be vigilant and be aware of the pleomorphic nature of the NVS to prevent misidentification.
NVS should be suspected when gram stain shows microbial cells but cultures are negative [2]. Once their nutritional growth requirements are supplemented in media, NVS convert to streptococci-like cells [39] and gram positivity making them easier to identify, although it was also shown that correcting nutritional deficiency may not convert all abnormalities [40]. For
Contemporary blood culture methods enable
Cargill et al. noted that anaerobic blood culture bottles became positive sooner than aerobic blood cultures bottles; (3.56 h, standard deviation 8.49 h) although they noted that this was not significant or reliable [31].
Specific phenotypic characteristics of NVS can be identified by examining their patterns of production of α-galactosidase, β-galactosidase, β-glucosidase, N-acetyl-β-glucosaminidase and β-glucuronidase, and fermentation of trehalose, pullulan, tagatose and sucrose [32, 38].
Molecular diagnostic techniques can be used for rapid and accurate diagnosis of NVS in blood or tissue samples. PCR amplification of 16S rRNA and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) for routine detection of NVS was developed by Ohara-Nemoto et al. in 1997 [42]. For culture negative infective endocarditis, molecular techniques appear to be more sensitive in resected valvular tissue compared to blood samples [43].
Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) is a fast, reliable and cost-effective technique used to identify microorganisms by utilizing MALDI-TOF MS devices in the clinical microbiology labs [44]. These devices carry the potential to complement or replace the phenotypic identification of various microorganisms including bacteria [44]. MALDI-TOF MS is a rapid and accurate diagnostic tool that has been used to identify and timely diagnose NVS [45].
In culture negative endocarditis,
Endocarditis caused by NVS typically follows a slow and indolent course. Endocarditis develops as a result of bacteremia.
Mortality rate associated with endocarditis caused by NVS is 17% which is higher than that of viridans streptococci (0–12%) and enterococci (9%) [47].
Underlying valvular disease is commonly seen as a predisposing factor for development of endocarditis. Over 90% of the cases have preexisting heart disease and 10% of patients have prosthetic heart valves [48]. Newer data however, suggest that there is increased involvement of normal heart valves in the past decade [49].
Embolization is a common complication of Abiotrophia endocarditis affecting one-third of patients. Typical peripheral manifestations of endocarditis such as petechia, digital clubbing, Osler nodes are not frequently found [41].
It has been known that infective endocarditis caused by NVS carries a higher risk of embolization, treatment failure and increased mortality as compared to infective endocarditis caused by viridans streptococci [4].
Stein et al. reviewed 30 published case reports of endocarditis caused by NVS and found that 17% of patients had relapses after antibiotic therapy. Bacteriologic failure rate was 41% (defined as positive blood cultures after 7 days of appropriate antibiotic therapy, relapse following a course of therapy with appropriate antibiotics, or a positive valve culture). It is notable that bacteriologic failure was seen despite the sensitivity of the organisms to the antibiotics used in two thirds of the cases. About 31% of the patients required surgery. Mortality rate was 17% which was higher than that of endocarditis caused by enterococci or viridans streptococci [41].
Similarly a more recent review of 29 cases of solely
Large vegetation sizes are associated with increased risk of systemic embolism in infective endocarditis. Case studies reveal large vegetation sizes with infective endocarditis caused by NVS (greater than 10 mm in 7 out of 8 cases reviewed by Lin et al., and average vegetation size of 16 mm in a case series of 29 patients by Adam et al.) [50]. These findings correlate with the high rates of systemic embolism seen in endocarditis caused by NVS.
Endocarditis caused by NVS is associated with high rates of infectious intracranial cerebral aneurysms although the exact incidence is unknown. Having a low threshold for obtaining imaging of the CNS is reasonable even for patients with vague complaints such as severe localized headaches or mild confusion [3]. Many infectious intracranial cerebral aneurysms resolve by antibiotic treatment with reductions in size in the first 1–2 weeks. The risk of rupture decreases with time on antibiotic therapy [3].
Endocarditis caused by NVS is associated with 13% of aortic valve damage and 11% of mitral valve damage. If not recognized on a timely basis, these patients may present with congestive heart failure as the first presenting manifestation of the infection [51]. Congestive heart failure is a potential complication of valvular destruction which can necessitate heart valve replacement surgery.
Aorto-RV fistula is a rare complication of
Endocarditis caused by NVS has rarely been reported in children. According to a review of 13 pediatric cases in children, 69% had underlying heart disease [54]. Similar to adult patients, endocarditis caused by NVS in pediatric populations also appears to be associated with high complication rates including severe valvular damage, surgical valve replacement and systemic embolization [54, 55].
Antimicrobial susceptibility testing is very difficult for
Recommended treatment regimen is Ampicillin (12 g/d in divided doses) or penicillin (18–30 million U/D in divided doses or by continuous infusion) plus gentamicin 3 mg/kg/d in 2–3 divided doses).
For those patients who are intolerant to penicillin, Vancomycin alone without the use of gentamicin can be given for therapy. This is in contrast to enterococcal endocarditis treatment where Vancomycin is combined with gentamicin [33].
The duration of treatment for
The treatment duration is 4 weeks for native valve endocarditis with symptoms or illness ≤3 months. 6 week therapy is recommended for patients with symptoms >3 months. For prosthetic valve or other prosthetic cardiac material infections, minimum 6 weeks of antibiotic therapy is recommended [33].
Historically, in animal models it was shown that Penicillin alone was inferior to Penicillin plus aminoglycoside or Vancomycin alone for the treatment of infective endocarditis caused by NVS [57, 58]. it was shown that penicillin plus low dose (0.32 mg/kg) vs. high dose (1.05 mg/kg) gentamicin treatment results were virtually identical [57].
There is encouraging data to suggest that shortened courses of aminoglycosides in the treatment regimens (median 15 days) may result is similar clinical outcomes in treatment of enterococcal endocarditis. However this particular issue requires further study and it is not yet known how this would apply to treatment of infective endocarditis caused by
Given the growing concerns over antibiotic resistance among NVS, poor treatment outcomes and high rates of treatment failures it is important to look into data for susceptibilities of a broad range of antibiotics. There is however limited data available regarding the antibiotic susceptibilities of
NVS have the highest in vitro penicillin resistance compared to any other streptococci. The rate of penicillin resistance among NVS appears to be rising over the years. While an earlier study by Cooksey and Swenson in 1979 [59] and Gephart and Washington in 1982 [60] showed no isolates had a penicillin MIC >1 μg/ml, subsequent studies showed significantly increasing penicillin resistance; Bosley and Facklam in 1990 [61] noted 9% rate of resistance to penicillin and Alberti in 2016 [62] reported 14% rate of penicillin resistance among NVS. It is also notable that the method of penicillin susceptibility testing has changed over the years. Douglas et al. (1994) [63] found that while historical method of penicillin susceptibility testing by reference dilution method did not find penicillin resistance, when same NVS isolates were tested with E test, 7% penicillin resistance was detected. The high rate of penicillin resistance among VNS appears also to be consistent among NVS isolates from pediatric infections [64].
According to antibiotic susceptibility testing of 132 isolates by Albierti et al. in 2016, only 33% of the 132 isolates were susceptible to penicillin and 14% were resistant with an MIC ≥4 μg/ml. The remaining 53% of the isolates had penicillin MICs in the intermediate category (0.25–2 μg/ml) [62]. Liao et al. reported 50% of their isolates (14 out of 28 isolates) had intermediate susceptibility to penicillin [65].

It is notable that clinical failures of treatment have frequently been described even for penicillin susceptible strains when appropriate antibiotics are given. Holloway et al. described a phenomenon of penicillin tolerance among NVS which minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) significantly exceeded (greater than 32) the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) that would lead to a slower antibiotic effect and potentially a worse clinical response. In addition to the usual nutritional supplements of vitamin B6 and cysteine to the plates, by adding penicillinase to the subculture medium and a staphylococcal streak across the plates they showed that even though all tested isolates were susceptible to penicillin (MICs of the strains ranged from 0.05 to 0.4 U of penicillin per ml), 100% of the isolates were penicillin tolerant. The isolates did not show any penicillin tolerance if the subculture was supplemented only with pyridoxal and cysteine [67]. Therefore, in order to identify penicillin tolerance and not misidentify the strains as penicillin sensitive, it is necessary to add penicillinase to the medium in addition to the usual growth supplements, pyridoxal HCl, cysteine and staphylococcal streak.
The slow growth rate of NVS is also thought to be responsible from poor response to antibiotic treatment. NVS generation time is 2–3 h while viridans streptococci generation time is 40–50 min [2, 41, 68].
According to the latest consensus guidelines from the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) for antimicrobial susceptibility testing for infrequently isolated or fastidious bacteria, disk diffusion test for
E test is proven to be a rapid and simple method for MIC estimation for NVS, comparable to broth microdilution MIC testing [63].
CLSI consensus guidelines also emphasize that cases of
Penicillin resistance is often associated with resistance or decreased susceptibility to other beta-lactam antibiotics including ceftriaxone [66].
However, overall cephalosporin susceptibility among NVS appears to be higher compared to penicillin. In addition, A
Albierti et al. noted that some of the isolates that were resistant to ceftriaxone still remained susceptible to Ceftaroline. (51.6% of
Resistance to higher generations of cephalosporins have been reported such as Cefepime (2 out of 21 isolates) [70] and Cefotaxime (7 out of 28 isolates were resistant) [65].
Species related differences of penicillin or cephalosporin sensitivities in determining antibiotic choices remains to be investigated. The high rates of ceftriaxone resistance among
European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Clinical Practice Guidelines include Ceftriaxone in their recommendations for treatment of endocarditis caused by

When the breakpoint of Linezolid susceptibility for viridans group streptococci (MIC ≤2 μg/ml) is applied to NVS, all NVS would be considered susceptible to Linezolid according to one study of 132 isolates [62, 69]. It was noted that
Rifampin appears to be one of the most effective antibiotics against NVS although the data is limited. It was shown that Rifampin had a minimal bactericidal concentration of 2 μg/ml while that of penicillin was 1 μg/ml [60]. Combination of Vancomycin and Rifampin showed synergy in in vitro studies [74]. According to one review of 15 isolates of
Endocarditis caused by NVS is associated with high rates of complications including heart failure, embolization and valvular damage. The need for surgery and time of surgery remains to be determined. However based on outcomes of several cases published in the literature, the rate of surgical treatment is very high especially due to development of heart failure.
he rate of valve surgery is high; 51% (in a review of 29 cases of
A vegetation size of 10 mm or more is associated with increased mortality and increased risk of embolic events [76]. EASE Trial showed that early surgery in infective endocarditis in patients with large vegetations significantly reduced the mortality, risk of systemic embolism or recurrence of infective endocarditis (3% in the early surgery group vs. 28% in the conventional treatment group) [77]. Lin et al. [68] reported 7 out of 8 cases of endocarditis caused by NVS had large vegetation sizes (10 mm). In the same review, 7 out of 8 cases required surgery (4 out of 8 cases required early valve replacement due to severe heart failure, while 3 cases underwent mitral valve repair 2,4, and 7 months after the diagnosis of endocarditis).
Combined approach with antibiotic treatment and surgery provides the best outcomes in endocarditis caused by NVS. Specifically, early surgical intervention should be considered for those patients with heart failure due to valvular destruction [68], hemodynamic compromise [49] or large vegetation sizes [68, 77].
Infective endocarditis caused by NVS has posed tremendous diagnostic and therapeutic challenges and continue to do so even in the era of modern medicine. Delays in diagnosis due to difficulties in identification frequently cause delays in treatment and poor treatment outcomes. Treatment failure and high complication rates associated with
Interpretation of the medical literature of
Differences in pathogenicity and susceptibility to antimicrobials have been demonstrated among these heterogeneous group of bacteria. More studies are needed to determine if there are further species specific differences of these fascinating microorganisms which would help us improve our understanding, diagnosis and the treatment outcomes of infections caused by NVS.
Ruthenium is a precious metal that belongs to the platinum-group elements [1]. As ruthenium can adopt various oxidation numbers, its coordination complexes adopt a wide variety of oxidation states from -II to VIII [2]. When nitrogen-based donor ligands are coordinated to a central ruthenium atom, the resulting ruthenium complexes generally prefer the +II and + III oxidation states, but occasionally also adopt the +IV and + V states. Arguably the most studied Ru complexes with nitrogen-based donor ligands are those that contain the hexaammineruthenium dication, [Ru(NH3)6]2+, and the tris(2,2′-bipyridine)ruthenium(II) dication, [Ru(bpy)3]2+(bpy = 2,2′-bipyridine) [3, 4, 5, 6]. [Ru(bpy)3]2+ was first reported by Burstall [7] and is easily obtained from the reaction of RuCl3•nH2O with an excess amount of bpy in aqueous ethanol. [Ru(bpy)3]2+ exhibits a stable low-spin t2g6 electronic configuration as well as a reversible one-electron oxidation at +1.29 V (vs SCE) and successive one-electron reductions at −1.33 V, −1.52 V, −1.76 V, and − 2.4 V vs. SCE; the oxidation is a Ru(II/III) metal-center-based process, while the reductions occur on the bpy ligands. [Ru(bpy)3]2+ exhibits a metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) band at 452 nm and bright luminescence at 612 nm (lifetime: 600 ns) under MLCT excitation. This luminescence arises from the triplet MLCT photoexcited state, which allows this complex to serve as a photosensitizer for a wide scope of photoenergy conversion processes and as a photocatalyst for organic transformations [8]. Therefore, it is hardly surprising that during the past five decades, numerous studies on photoactive [Ru(bpy)3]2+ complexes have been reported [3]. Surface modification plays an important role in controlling the electron-transfer events and chemical reactivity in photocatalysis, as well as the charge-transport process in heterojunctions. Recently, several reviews of the applications of surface modification toward dye-sensitized solar cells and electrochemical catalysts for hydrogen/oxygen-evolution reactions have been published [21, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34], showing the importance of such interdisciplinary research. In the area of solar-energy conversion, Grätzel-type dye-sensitized solar cells composed of mesoporous TiO2 on fluorine-doped SnO2 (FTO) with immobilized Ru complexes that contain 2,2′-bipyridyl-4,4′-dicarboxylate and other bpy-derived ligands have been developed [35]. Interestingly, the electron-injection efficiency from the photoexcited-state Ru complex to TiO2 was found to strongly dependent on the anchoring group [34, 36, 37].
Given that the adsorption strength of a Ru complex on a surface depends on the combination of the anchoring group and the surface material, judicious selection of both is necessary for effective surface functionalization. Recently, indium-tin oxide (ITO)-coated glass or polymer substrates have been employed in a wide variety of electronic display devices such as organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) [38]. Transparent ITO electrodes are also employed as cell windows for spectroelectrochemistry. Therefore, ITO is a suitable substrate for monitoring both the electrochemical and spectrochemical changes in redox-active Ru complexes immobilized on its surface. The phosphonic acid group, which is known to immobilize on ITO electrodes, has been employed to anchor the Ru complexes [39]. Furthermore, organic phosphonic acids are known to bind zirconium(IV) ions to form a solid two-dimensional layer structure, [40]. which demonstrates their suitability for use in a layer-by-layer growth method based on redox-active metal complexes. Therefore, we developed several new tridentate benzimidazole ligands with phosphonic acid or phosphonate ester anchor groups (Figure 5). Alkylation of the imino N–H groups of the benzimidazole moieties using bromoalkyl-diethylphosphonate derivatives furnished chelating benzimidazolyl ligands with ethyl-protected phosphonates, which were used for the synthesis of Ru complexes [41]. After the ethyl-protected phosphonate Ru complexes had been purified, the diethyl phosphonate groups were deprotected to provide the corresponding Ru complexes with phosphonic acid groups. Ru complexes are substitutionally inert, and the octahedral coordination geometry around the Ru ion is maintained throughout the Ru(II/III) redox reaction. Therefore, they can be immobilized on a surface to design redox-active molecular devices. When three bidentate ligands are coordinated to an octahedral Ru complex, the formation of Δ and Λ optical isomers is possible, but in the case of Ru complexes surrounded by two tridentate ligands with C2v symmetry, no optical isomers do not exist. Hence, surface-confined Ru complexes that contain tridentate ligands with C2v symmetry such as 2,6-bis(benzimidazolyl)pyridine with phosphonic acid anchors are often selected for surface immobilization [21, 42]. Furthermore, the molecular orientation of Ru complexes self-assembled on a surface is crucial to the construction of further layered structures. To maintain the vertical orientation of the Ru complexes on a surface, free-standing multipodal anchor groups with phosphonic acid have been developed over the last two decades. The formation of well-ordered zirconium(IV) bisphosphonate multilayer films is a well-known method for LbL assemblies on a solid surface that has been developed by Mallouk and others [40]. This method is based on the reconstitution of a two-dimensional layered compound, Zr(HPO3)2, on a gold surface via self-assembly of molecular units with metal ions. Starting from self-assembled 4-mercaptobutylphosphonic acid on the gold surface as a primer layer, alternate immersion of the modified gold substrate into a zirconium(IV) oxychloride solution and a bisphosphonic acid solution leads to multilayer films composed of a two-dimensional zirconium–phosphonate framework structure via LbL growth [40].

Molecular-based supercapacitors are promising candidates in terms of these requirements. Redox-active Ru complexes are suitable for the fabrication of energy storage devices, since multilayer molecular Ru assemblies obtained via the LbL method can be scaled by increasing the number of layers, which leads to enhancement of the electrical capacitance in such films [57].

On the other hand, when all four imino N–H protons on the benzimidazole moieties were protected by N–Me groups, the capacitance decreased by 77% compared to that of the original PCET-type capacitor. This result strongly suggests that the proton movement plays a more important role than the anion movement in the charge storage. Furthermore, the proton movement accompanying the redox reaction in the Ru multilayer films on the ITO electrode was confirmed using a pH-indicator probe in aqueous solution. In this type of LbL films composed of Ru complexes that exhibit PCET-type redox reactions, the capacitance increases almost linearly with the number of layers (Figure 21) [20].
To obtain proton rocking-chair-type redox capacitors that use protons as the charge carriers, the quinone/hydroquinone couple is often used [52, 64, 65, 66, 67]. However, at neutral pH, the electron–proton transfer rate of the quinone/hydroquinone couple is slower than that of the Ru(II/III) couple. The use of the LbL method to fabricate multilayered structures of redox-active Ru complexes that exhibit PCET is advantageous, as the storage capacity can be enhanced by increasing the number of redox-active modular units on demand.

The idea of molecular devices is based on a next-generation paradigm to overcome the limitations associated with Moore’s law, which states that the number of transistors per silicon chip doubles every year, and the use of individual molecules as active electronic components. The first single molecular device was the theoretical proposal of a molecular diode by Aviram and Ratner; [68] subsequently, the concept of molecular electronic devices was further developed by Carter [69]. Various molecules have demonstrated basic electronic functionality as switches, as diodes for rectification, and as optical devices, storage devices, and sensing devices for future information technologies [54, 70]. The recent experimental development of single-molecular conductance measurements using metal–molecule–metal junctions [71] has opened a new avenue for the realization of molecular electronic devices through the judicious selection of molecules [70, 72, 73, 74, 75, 76]. Ru complexes are substitutionally inert in both the Ru(II) and Ru(III) oxidation states, and also exhibit fast self-exchange ET rates due to the small reorganization energy of the Ru(II/III) couple. Therefore, the use of a mixed-valence Ru(II)–Ru(III) complex as a perturbing motif branching from a conducting molecular wire has been proposed by Carter. Here, two molecular devices based on Ru complexes are discussed; the first is a Ru-complex molecular junction that exhibits rectification switching in response to humidity, and the other is a two-terminal memristor device based on the PCET reactions of Ru complexes.

Further important applications for ruthenium complexes include photoredox catalysts and dye-sensitized solar cells. In particular, Ru(bpy)3 or Ru(tpy)2 derivatives have been used as photosensitizer dyes on mesoporous TiO2 surfaces in Grätzel-type solar cells. Over the past two decades, many Ru complexes with phosphonate anchors have been reported, [33] and many Ru dyes derived from Ru(bpy)3 derivatives that contain phosphonate anchors (Figure 30). Additionally, Ru-2,6-bis(benzimidazole-2-yl)pyridine complexes have been employed as photoredox catalysts [85, 86]. The Ru–benzimidazole bond is known to be more stable than the Ru–pyridine bond in the photoexcited state, rendering such Ru-benzimidazole complexes promising candidates for photoelectrochemical redox catalysts.

Substitutionally inert ruthenium complexes bearing benzimidazole derivatives have unique electrochemical and photochemical properties. In particular, proton-coupled electron-transfer in ruthenium–benzimidazole complexes endows them with rich redox chemistry and makes them useful as a modular unit for redox mediators or reactive sites for switching by external stimuli. In this chapter, the role of PCET reactions on Ru–benzimidazole complexes in energy-storage applications and the tuning of metal–metal interactions in aqueous solution was emphasized first. Based on this knowledge acquired from solution chemistry, the chemistry of Ru complexes confined on an electrode surface via their self-assembling from solution for the fabrication of the surface functional molecular devices on electrodes was discussed. Indium-tin oxide (ITO) is often chosen as the electrode due to its transparency and wide use as a substrate in electronics. To immobilize the redox-active Ru complexes on an ITO electrode, tetrapod phosphonic acid anchor groups are often incorporated into tridentate 2,6-bis(benzimidazole-2-yl)pyridine or benzene ligands, which enables the construction of free-standing self-assembled monolayer structures on an ITO electrode. Starting from this monolayer as a primer layer, multilayer films can be constructed by the LbL layer growth method. The resulting multilayers using redox-active Ru complexes as a modular unit exhibited long-range electron transport even in films with over 60 layers (∼100 nm thick) through the “stepping-stone” mechanism. Furthermore, a combinatorial approach to LbL layer growth can be used to obtain bespoke functional heterolayer films via material design. Using this strategy, blocking of electron transfer or rectification can be made to occur in such Ru complex heterolayer films, which results in charge trapping; the trapped electrons can subsequently be released via photo-irradiation, which leads to the new concept of photo-responsive memory devices. It is currently affected by different pressures, mainly driven by human activities such as climate change and bioinvasions. This Sea, also due to its geographic position (wedged between the temperate climate of central Europe and the arid climate of northern Africa), seems to be one of the regions most susceptible to global climate change. The increased rates of introduction and spread of marine alien species may represent a supplementary stress factor to Mediterranean marine native biota already challenged by climatic abnormalities. The Suez Canal is considered to be the main vector of introduction of non‐indigenous marine species into the Mediterranean Sea. Due to the dramatically accelerating rate of such introductions and due to the sheer magnitude of shipping traffic, the Mediterranean Sea may be considered as a true hotspot of marine bioinvasions. The complexity of interactions between native and invasive species and the associated resulting impacts make environmental management of such an issue particularly difficult. However, there have been insufficient findings on the adaptation regarding the eco-village practices in semi-arid areas in particular. This inspired a study to assess the role of eco-village practices in strengthening climate change adaptive capacity and mitigating desertification in semi-arid areas of Chololo village, Dodoma region in central Tanzania. Data were collected using mixed methods, that is, household survey (92), focus group discussions (21), key informants interviews (6), field observation and documentary review. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) and content analysis were used in analyzing quantitative and qualitative data respectively. The results showed, the canopy storey of H. ammodendron plantation experienced three stages, rapid growth (the age of 7 to 20), then slow growth (the age of 20 to 28) and last decline (over the age of 28). The best natural regeneration started from 17-yr-old plantation. Vegetation-soil system coupling degree (C) and coupling coordinative degree (D) of plantations with different age were not one-to-one correspondence. The system of H. ammodendron plantations always stayed in disorder recession, vegetation and soil were prone to loss type during the process of sand-fixation. Five principal components evaluated that the first rank was 42-yr-old plantation. It was inferred that the trend of the vegetation and soil system was from senescence to harmonious development. What these apparently diverse phenomena have in common is that they all result from blowing sand and dust. This review paper unifies these three disparate but related phenomena. First, for contemporary dune fields, we offer reviews of two technical papers that explain the eolian formation and the continuing development of two major dune fields in southeastern California and northwestern Sonora, Mexico: the Algodones Dunes and the Gran Desierto de Altar. Second, historical, geological, meteorological, and socioeconomic aspects of the 1930s Great Plains Dust Bowl are discussed. Third, and last, we return to the present day to summarize two lengthy reports on dust storms and to review two technical papers that concern their forecasting and simulation. The intent of this review is to acquaint the interested reader with how eolian transport of sand and dust affects the formation of present-day dune fields, human agricultural enterprises, and efforts to better forecast and simulate dust storms. Implications: Blowing sand and dust have drastically affected the geological landscape and continue to shape the formation of dune fields today. Nearly a century ago the U.S. Great Plains suffered through the Dust Bowl, yet another consequence of blowing sand and dust brought on by drought and mismanagement of agricultural lands. Today, this phenomenon adversely affects landscapes, transportation, and human respiratory health. The impacts normally interfere with the ecosystem functioning of riparian and aquatic environments, thereby leading to decreased biodiversity. This study aims to assess the impacts of dams on downstream river ecosystems, using data from aerial photographs and orthophotos, supplemented by field work. Five dams in Limpopo Province, South Africa, were selected (Albasini, Damani, Mambedi, Nandoni and Vondo), and photographs from different years were used. The area devoid of trees of certain species both downstream and upstream of the dams was calculated using grids of predetermined square sizes on each available photograph. Aerial photographs and orthophoto data were supplemented by field work. The nearest-individual method was used in the field to determine tree density of particular tree species. The environments downstream of the dams show a loss of obligate riparian vegetation and an increase of obligate terrestrial vegetation (Acacia Karroo, Acacia Ataxacantha and Bauhinia galpinii). Infectious Diseases",scope:"Fungi are ubiquitous and there are almost no non-pathogenic fungi. Fungal infectious illness prevalence and prognosis are determined by the exposure between fungi and host, host immunological state, fungal virulence, and early and accurate diagnosis and treatment. \r\nPatients with both congenital and acquired immunodeficiency are more likely to be infected with opportunistic mycosis. Fungal infectious disease outbreaks are common during the post- disaster rebuilding era, which is characterised by high population density, migration, and poor health and medical conditions.\r\nSystemic or local fungal infection is mainly associated with the fungi directly inhaled or inoculated in the environment during the disaster. The most common fungal infection pathways are human to human (anthropophilic), animal to human (zoophilic), and environment to human (soilophile). Diseases are common as a result of widespread exposure to pathogenic fungus dispersed into the environment. \r\nFungi that are both common and emerging are intertwined. In Southeast Asia, for example, Talaromyces marneffei is an important pathogenic thermally dimorphic fungus that causes systemic mycosis. Widespread fungal infections with complicated and variable clinical manifestations, such as Candida auris infection resistant to several antifungal medicines, Covid-19 associated with Trichoderma, and terbinafine resistant dermatophytosis in India, are among the most serious disorders. \r\nInappropriate local or systemic use of glucocorticoids, as well as their immunosuppressive effects, may lead to changes in fungal infection spectrum and clinical characteristics. Hematogenous candidiasis is a worrisome issue that affects people all over the world, particularly ICU patients. CARD9 deficiency and fungal infection have been major issues in recent years. Invasive aspergillosis is associated with a significant death rate. Special attention should be given to endemic fungal infections, identification of important clinical fungal infections advanced in yeasts, filamentous fungal infections, skin mycobiome and fungal genomes, and immunity to fungal infections.\r\nIn addition, endemic fungal diseases or uncommon fungal infections caused by Mucor irregularis, dermatophytosis, Malassezia, cryptococcosis, chromoblastomycosis, coccidiosis, blastomycosis, histoplasmosis, sporotrichosis, and other fungi, should be monitored. \r\nThis topic includes the research progress on the etiology and pathogenesis of fungal infections, new methods of isolation and identification, rapid detection, drug sensitivity testing, new antifungal drugs, schemes and case series reports.
