He is a former member of the board of the Hellenic Authority for Communication Security and Privacy. His main research interests are the elicitation, analysis, and modelling of security and privacy requirements in traditional and cloud-based systems, the analysis and modelling of forensic-enabled systems and services, privacy-enhancing technologies, and the design of information system security and privacy in cultural informatics. He has published several refereed papers in international scientific journals and conferences and has served as a visiting professor in many European institutions. Prior to his academic career, he served at various places in the Greek public sector including the North Aegean Region and Ministry of Interior, Decentralisation and e-Governance. He has a close collaboration with the Laboratory of Information & Communication Systems Security, University of the Aegean, and the Systems Security Laboratory, University of Piraeus, Greece. We present real-world use case scenarios and derive features for training and managing NER models with the Stanford NLP machine learning API. Then, the integration of our developed NER system with an expert rule-based system is presented, which allows an automatic classification of text documents into different taxonomy categories available in the knowledge management system. Finally, we present the results of two evaluations. First, a functional evaluation that demonstrates the portability of our NER system using a standard text corpus in the medical area. But in addition to the development of dynamic platforms that enhance learning, it is essential that they are accessible to disabled people, allowing gamification resources and interactions between participants to be used by any audience, including people with visual and hearing disabilities. From this premise, this research problematizes the need to think from the initial project on the accessibility tools of an LMS following the recommendations prepared by groups such as the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and Global Learning Consortium (GLC), including Web Accessibility Initiative - World Wide Web Consortium (WAI-W3C), IMS GLC - Accessibility Guidelines (IMS GLC-ACC) and Web Accessibility Initiative - Accessible Rich Internet Applications (WAI-ARIA). Alopecia can be either scarring or non-scarring. Non-scarring alopecias tend to have preserved follicular ostia, with no clinically visible inflammation in most presentations, although histologic inflammation may be present. The common types of non-scarring alopecias are androgenic alopecia, telogen effluvium, alopecia areata, trichotillomania and traction alopecia. Scarring alopecias, also known as cicatricial alopecia, refers to a collection of hair loss disorders that have loss of follicular ostia, or atrophy, with permanent and irreversible destruction of hair follicles and their replacement with scar tissue. The histologic confirmation is the best method to confirm the presence of a fibrosing/scarring process with loss of hair follicles.
Scarring alopecias can be classified as lymphocytic (discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE), lichen planopilaris (LPP), central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia, pseudopelade of Brocq), neutrophilic (folliculitis decalvans, dissecting folliculitis), and mixed (acne keloidalis) entities [1].
Many alopecia types are biphasic. For example, androgenetic alopecia eventually results in loss of ostia and thus may appear like a scarring alopecia.
To establish the cause of the hair loss, one requires a history to identify known triggers, scalp examination, biochemical investigations and in many cases histology to identify the earliest stages of some types of alopecias esp scarring alopecia.
Scalp biopsies can be used to make or confirm a diagnosis of alopecia. Scalp biopsy is considered mandatory in all cases of scarring alopecia. The interpretation of the histopathological findings of primary scarring alopecias without known clinical history may be difficult and this is especially true if the biopsy specimen is inadequate.
In non-scarring type, it is not difficult to diagnose these disorders. However, scalp biopsy can be needed in few cases of:
Lack of identifiable triggers.
Severe hair loss (as in some cases of alopecia areata which does not present in a well defined bald area, but as severe hair loss (Fig 1).
Acute hair loss.
Telogen effluvium does not occur in an acute way after a known triggering factor.
Some cases of female androgenetic alopecia pattern; the clinical presentation may be similar to other types of non-scarring alopecias.

It is a crucial to determine the appropriate site of a scalp biopsy to have a correct diagnosis of alopecia, and this approach is different in scarring and non-scarring types. For a scarring process, the biopsy should be taken from the active border of hair loss where some hairs still remain and are more likely to display diagnostic findings. For non-scarring alopecias, the preferred site of biopsy is generally the border of a lesion (positive exclamation marks in alopecia areata), or from the site of a positive pull test in the setting of a diffuse alopecia. In the setting of evaluating a possible androgenic alopecia, two biopsies, one from the involved scalp (often vertex) and one from the uninvolved scalp (often occiput; serves as a positive control) may be beneficial.
The current gold-standard for a scalp biopsy specimen is the use of a 4-mm punch and must include subcutaneous fat to ensure sampling of the entire follicular unit and any anagen follicles; the specimen may be sectioned vertically or transversely [2]. Although a combination of the two may be optimal, the pathologist is frequently only provided with a single specimen.
Vertically-sectioned punch biopsy specimen is adequate for assessing alopecias associated with interface changes, lichenoid infiltrates, and subcutaneous pathology [3]. However, vertical sectioning will show only 10% of the follicles present in the specimen [4]because the hair follicles, which grow at an angle, cannot be visualized in their entirety in conventional vertical sections.

Horizontal sections are becoming the method of choice as they offer the advantage of evaluating large numbers of follicles simultaneously, determining hair density, location of inflammatory infiltrate and anagen to telogen ratio [5]. A transversely sectioned specimen will include all the hair follicles present in the biopsy, and in the same section. Although the clinical impression is very important in diagnosing alopecia, transversely sectioned biopsy specimens can greatly aid the diagnosis and management of patients with alopecia [6].

The histological findings in many forms of hair loss may be similar, and an accurate diagnosis of hair loss depends on distinguishing abnormal from normal follicular architecture. It is important to identify the normal hair follicle structure, the number, size and distribution of hair follicles within a biopsy specimen. Hematoxylin and eosin staining of the scalp biopsies is the usual satin in most of the cases of hair loss, but in some of the alopecias (such as DLE), immunofluorescence staining may be needed to add in diagnosis. In addition, the pathologist may use additional special stains to narrow a differential diagnosis or confirm an initial impression and one of these is immunohistochemistry which is dependent on the localization of antigens in tissue sections by the use of labeled antibody as specific reagents through antigen-antibody interactions that are visualized by a marker such as peroxidase.
Specimens are categorized as scarring or nonscarring alopecia, and further diagnostic criteria discussed herein assist the pathologist in making specific diagnoses of nonscarring and scarring alopecias.
Histologically, cicatricial alopecia is characterized by dermal scarring, along with absent or reduced hair follicles and reduced number of erector pili muscles. But taking skin biopsy from the active area will be more informative about the diagnosis.
This scarring alopecia may be secondary, and due to numerous etiologies (such as due to infectious causes (Fig 4), or primary, where the cause and pathogenesis are largely unknown, but the target is the hair follicle itself (such as DLE and LPP).
The discussion in following sections is about the primary type as the skin biopsy is more informative about the diagnosis.

Lupus erythematosus is an autoimmune disease that can affect one or more internal organs as well as the skin. This disease is a clinical spectrum ranging from mildly affected patients with only localized skin disease to those at risk of dying from systemic manifestations. The skin involvement is among the most frequent symptoms; and is characterized by its natural history of relapsing and chronicity. The scalp (Fig 5) is a common area of involvement, and permanent alopecia may result with the following morphological features; sclero-atrophy, erythema, follicular hyperkeratosis, plugging and telangiectasia. The irreversible, scarring alopecia differs from the reversible non scarring alopecia that is seen in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus.
Scarring alopecia in DLE may mimic other types of scarring alopecia seen in some dermatoses, the most common differential diagnosis of this is lichen planopilaris (LPP) and the differentiation between them is possible by early clinical and histological changes. Both LPP and DLE show perifollicular erythema and keratotic follicular papules, but the distinctive clinical features of DLE of the scalp are the presence of erythema, scaling, telangiectasia, and mottled hyperpigmentation within the areas of scarring alopecia and the presence of hyperkeratotic papules in the central part of the bald area in DLE, while in LPP it presents at the margin of the alopecia patch [7].

DLE is a scarring disease and so early treatment is needed to control existing cutaneous lesions and limit scaring and to prevent the development of the disease. Patients with DLE lesions should have regular clinical evaluation accompanied by simple laboratory studies to evaluate the possible progression from the primary cutaneous disorder to the disorder accompanied by systemic involvement. Therapy begins with general measures such as the use of sun-protective measures, including sunscreens, protective clothing and medical therapy includes corticosteroids (topical or intralesional) and antimalarials.
Routine histologic examination of lesional skin from CLE patients is necessary, as the diagnosis of CLE generally requires clinicopathologic correlation and the distinction between different types of CLE based on histological findings without clinical correlation is difficult; all forms of CLE are similar histologically in broad terms. Histopathological features (Fig 6) include pilosebaceous atrophy, hyperkeratosis, parakeratosis, basement membrane thickening, subepidermal oedema and vasodilatation. A perivascular and peri-appendageal superficial and deep lymphoid cell infiltrate with plasma cells are other histolopathological findings.

Direct immunofluorescence (DIF) of lesional skin in CLE is an adjunctive test; it helps to confirm the diagnosis when the routine histological findings are equivocal. The test is positive only in some of lesional skin biopsies; so light microscopy should be carried out before DIF. For DIF, the optimal lesion of LE should be an established, erythematosus lesion, and of at least 6-8 weeks in duration. The most suggestive findings are the presence of multiple immunoreactants typically IgG and IgM, in a special pattern (bright in intensity, continuous, perifollicular, and granular) [8]. Sometimes complement components may be present including C3b and C1q. Scalp lesions have been reported to show the highest frequency of the DIF test (83 %), the immunoreactants deposits occur around hair follicles, an important feature not seen in other types of scarring alopecia.
Using immunohistochemistry [9], there were significant alterations in the basement membrane zone (BMZ) in patients with active DLE and this explain the previous histological findings of thickened BMZ in DLE. There was an increase in the expression of the anchoring fibril and collagen component antigens in the BMZ with gross thickening and protrusion into the dermis in active DLE lesions (Fig 7).

LPP is a rare type of lichen planus which characteristically affects the scalp (Figure 8) with perifollicular erythema, keratotic follicular spines and with patchy or diffuse hair loss which may result in scarring alopecia as its end stage. Scalp lesions can be associated with characteristic flat topped violaceous papules of lichen planus (LP) on the limbs in 50 % of cases [10]. LPP of the scalp is a scarring disease and it is difficult to treat comparing to the glabrous LP and this has major psychological consequences for the affected patients. The therapeutic management often is quite challenging, as relapses are common after local or systemic treatments. The recommended treatments are ultrapotent topical or intralesional injections of corticosteroid. Some cases may need systemic treatment including oral corticotherapy and cyclosporine.
LPP of the scalp.
Histologically (Fig 9) has been reported to show two different patterns [11], each pattern characterized by the presence of specific histological features that reflects the specific stage of the progression of the disease. In the first pattern, hair follicles and the perifollicular dermis were mainly involved in the pathologic process, with no involvement of the interfollicular structures. In the second pattern, the pathologic changes extended to the interfollicular epidermis and the papillary dermis.
LPP pathology. The inflammation is mainly perifollicular with some involvement of the basal cell layers which also show basal cell degeneration.
Direct immunofluorescence highlights the presence of colloid bodies in the peri-infundibular area staining with IgM (less frequently with IgG, IgA and C3).
By immunohistochemistry staining [12], there is a significant alteration in the basement membrane structure in lesions of LPP which could differentiate it from active lesions of scalp DLE lesions.

The diagnosis of this type of alopecia is usually based on a thorough history and a focused physical examination. In some patients, punch biopsy may be necessary if the cause of hair loss is unclear as has been described previously. The focus in the following discussion will be on alopecia areata and androgenetic alopecia (the skin biopsies will be needed in some of cases).
Alopecia areata (Fig 11) is one form of non-scarring alopecia characterize by patchy hair loss of autoimmune origin. It usually presents as a single or multiple confluent patches of non-scarring alopecia. Spontaneous regression of the disease is common in this disease and the hair may grow back if the affected region is small. Topical treatment is effective including corticosteroids clobetasol or fluocinonide, corticosteroid injections, or cream, steroid injections, topical minoxidil, irritants (anthralin or topical coal tar), and topical immunotherapy. Oral corticosteroids decrease the hair loss, but only for the period during which they are taken.
Diagnostic pathological findings (Fig 12) are more prominent in this type of alopecia which characterize by peribulbar lymphocytic inflammation which is usually considered to be an essential finding in establishing the diagnosis [13]. The lymphocytic
infiltrate is rich in helper T cells, which are considered to be evidence of an autoimmune process. Despite this, it may be absent in many scalp biopsy specimens. In the acute stage; a moderate to dense inflammatory cell infiltrate (mainly lymphocytes and langerhans cells) [14] develops around anagen hair and this leads finally to anagen arrest and inhibition which weakens the lowest portion of the
hair shaft. Using follicular counts [15] related to the stage of disease is a useful way to establish the histologic features of alopecia areata in scalp biopsy specimens taken from different types of alopecia areata; alopecia areata should be suspected when high percentages of telogen hairs are present, even in the absence of a peribulbar infiltrate [15].

Androgenic alopecia is the most common type of hair loss. Clinically, it is a patterned alopecia, in that it is characterized by bitemporal recession and vertex balding in men, and in women (female pattern hair loss) by diffuse hair thinning of the crown with an intact frontal hairline. Histopathologically, the use of transverse sections is the most valuable method to reach a diagnosis [16], as all the hair follicles can be visualized.
The terminal (T) to vellus (v) ratio is T: V= less than 4:14. Normal scalp ratio is T: V= 7:1). A ratio of T: V= 3: 1 or less is considered to be diagnostic [16], [17].
A hundred years ago it is reported that primary metabolites (carbohydrates, proteins, amino acids, vitamins, acetone, ethanol, etc.), are involved in various life functions in plants such as cell division, growth and development, photosynthesis, respiration, and reproduction [1]. However, Kossel was the first to define the secondary metabolites (SMs) as opposed to the primary ones and then concept of SMs has been introduced in plant biology [2]. The term metabolite is usually confined to tiny molecules and products of metabolism. Plants produce unlimited and manifold assortment of organic compounds, the great majority of which do not take part in growth and development immediately. These substances commonly referred to as SMs, often are differentially distributed among limited taxonomic groups within the plant kingdom [3]. In the last decade SMs, low molecular compounds occurring in all living organisms while mostly distributed in plants, became a subject of dramatically increasing interest relevant to their outstanding practical implication for medicinal, nutritive and cosmetic purposes, as well as to their undebatable importance in plant stress physiology [4].
Recent advances of SMs research on plant stress physiology suggesting its involvement to the mitigating detrimental effects of various stressors [5, 6]. In addition to the protective functions of SMs, they also act as defending molecules of primary metabolites such as proteins and nucleic acids from stress-induced damages [7, 8]. Therefore, physiological modifications such as secondary metabolism adjustment, ion and water balance, minimization of oxidative damage etc. occurred in plant body which can provide the phenotypic response of stress tolerance directly or indirectly. The stress response could also be a growth inhibition or cell death [9, 10, 11], which will depend upon how many and which kind of genes are up- or down-regulated [12]. However, most of the cases secondary metabolism adjustment play an important role in defense mechanism either increasing or decreasing their production in plant body. In this chapter the role and involvement of SMs in regulation of various biotic and abiotic stresses in plants has been discussed.
Plants throughout their life cycle are subjected to various forms of biotic and abiotic stresses, as a sessile organism plants lack the ability to escape from that danger areas. Plants express responses to stress conditions in three ways. Some plants avoid the stress altogether (e.g. ephemeral, short-lived, desert plants), some show susceptibility to stress which may ultimately lead to plant death and some show resistant capacity [13]. To defend themselves against diverse stresses, plants have evolved complicated and highly regulated systems. To cope with these challenging environment plants evolve some efficient mechanism such as adjustment in photosynthetic rates, stomatal conductance, transpiration, cell wall architecture, remodeling of membrane structure, alterations in cell cycle and division rates with overall effect on general growth to fine-tune physiology and metabolism of bioactive compounds [14]. Initiation of stress and defense responses are mediated by signaling processes and pathways which trigger the primary metabolism that provides biosynthetic intermediates for secondary metabolism in plant body. These include the stress responsive system and the inducible defense system which depends on inducible activation of massive defense-related genes, suit of molecular and cellular process as well as inducible production of diverse defense-related SMs [15]. Plant accumulate a large number of SMs from primary metabolites in cells, and the production of that metabolites are regarded as an adaptive capacity in coping with stressful constraints during challenging environment [16, 17, 18].
Generally, a stress signal transduction pathway comprises the following key steps: (i) signal perception; (ii) signal transduction; and (iii) stress response. The first step in the activation of signaling cascade for any given stress is the recognition of stress signals via receptors located on the membrane of plant cell. Recently a few research works indicated that various plasma membrane proteins like COLD1 (Chilling Tolerance Divergence-1) [19], CNGCs (cyclic nucleotide nucleotide-gated channel), GLR (glutamate-receptor like) channel, histidine kinases, calcium channel are the main sensors for stress signaling. After recognition, the receptors transmit the signal into downstream through phytohormones and second messengers such as Ca2+ and ROS [20]. The second messengers, like ROS, trigger the activation of another set of ROS-modulated protein kinases (PKs) and protein phosphatases (PPs), including MAPK (mitogen-activated protein kinase) cascades, CDPKs (calcium-dependent protein kinases), CBLs (calcineurin-B-like proteins), CIPK (CBL-interacting protein kinase), and many other PKs as well as PPs such as some PP2Cs (protein phosphatase 2Cs). Subsequently, these PKs and PPs deliver the information downstream and trigger a series of phosphorylation or dephosphorylation of transcription factors (TFs), that finally culminates either directly in the expression of functional genes involved in cellular protection, or indirectly in the expression of regulatory genes participating in signaling cascades and transcriptional regulation of gene expression.
In addition of the enzymatic (such as superoxide dismutase, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase) and non-enzymatic antioxidants (such as ascorbic acid, reduced glutathione, α-tocopherol, carotenoids, flavonoids), primary metabolites including sugars, amino acids contribute to cellular homeostasis to adapt under stressful conditions [21]. Recently, the research advances supporting that products of secondary metabolism are important to alleviate toxic effects of stresses [5] through expression of stress responsive genes. Therefore, in presence of stress signals accumulated various species of SMs are critically important for adaptation and tolerance to the altering environment.
Plant SMs are classified into four major categories. These four categories include (i) terpenes (such as carotenoids, sterols, cardiac glycosides and plant volatiles), (ii) phenolics (such as lignans, phenolic acid, tannins, coumarins, lignins, stilbenes and flavonoids), (iii) nitrogen containing compounds (such as cyanogenic glycosides, alkaloids, and glucosinolates) and (iv) sulfur containing compounds (such as glutathione, phytoalexins, thionins, defensins and lectins) [22, 23]. But on the basis of biosynthesis pathways plant SMs are usually classified into three chemically distinct groups [24]. The diverse chemical structures of the SMs determine their functions to the medicine and stress adaptation. Three major categories are (i) terpenes derived from mevalonic acid pathway [25] and methyl erythritol phosphate pathway [26], (ii) phenolics derived from malonic acid pathway or a few case shikimic acid pathway [27], (iii) N (Nitrogen) and S (Sulfur) containing compounds via tricarboxylic acid cycle or sometimes via shikimic acid pathway. Among the pathways of SMs accumulation, shikimic acid, mevalonic acid, phenylpropanoic acid and methyl erythritol phosphate pathways are highly regulated under stress stimuli.
Plants produce various types of SMs, many of which have been subsequently exploited by humans for their beneficial roles in a diverse array of biological functions [28]. Terpenes are one of the diverse species of SMs contribute to the various biological process in plants. Terpenoids are terpenes with an oxygen moiety and additional structural rearrangements. Therefore, these two terms of terpenes and terpenoids are used interchangeably. Terpenoids have their roles in plant defense against biotic and abiotic stresses or they are treated as signal molecules to attract the insects for pollination. The first step of terpenoid biosynthesis is generation of C5 unit like as isopentenyl diphosphate (IPP) or dimethylallyl diphosphate (DMAPP). On the basis of C5 units, we can classify the terpenoids as C5 (hemiterpenes), C10 (monoterpenes), C15 (sesquiterpenes), C20 (diterpenes), C25 (sesterpenes), C30 (triterpenes), C40 (tetraterpenes), C40 (polyterpenes) [29, 30, 31].

Under abiotic stress conditions volatile terpenes alleviate the effects of oxidative stress either through direct reactions with oxidant intercellularly, and alteration of ROS signaling. The amphipathic nature of isoprene enhances hydrophobic interactions between membrane proteins and lipids [38] which prevents membrane disintegration and protein disintegration. In response to oxidative stimuli, membrane bound SMs such as such as tocopherol and carotenoids (zeaxanthin, neoxanthin, and lutein) acts as antioxidants and may directly scavenge ROS in response to photoinhibition [39, 40, 41, 42, 43]. Singlet oxygen generated under oxidative stress considered is one of the strong oxidants also removed by the isoprenoids [44]. Oleuropein, a member of terpene family SMs, found higher amount of accumulation in leaves and roots of olive tree in response to salinity stress. The increase accumulation of oleuropein under salinity stress protect the olive tree from the oxidative stress [45]. The reason behind this relationship is that oleuropein acts as a glucose-reservoir for osmoregulation or high energy-consuming processes required for plant adaptation to salinity. Furthermore, oleuropein may act as an additional constituent of the antioxidant defense system of olive trees. Although most studies showed plant tolerant mechanism largely depends on the functions of non-volatiles antioxidant compounds. However, various volatiles organic compounds of the terpenes family have been connected in the protection to abiotic stresses, in particular photooxidative stress, heat stress and ozone stress. In response to ozone and heat stress, plant emitting isoprene alleviate ROS accumulation and protected plant from oxidative damages. Grapevines are not isoprene emitting plants but other volatiles isoprenoids such as monoterpenes emitter grapevine clone showed tolerance to heat stress [46].
Among the terpenes, isoprene (C5) and monoterpene hydrocarbons ameliorate abiotic stress in a number of plant species via membrane stabilization and direct antioxidant effects. Besides antioxidants properties of isoprene and monoterpene hydrocarbons they also rapid react with ozone to reduce its toxicity. A transgenic tobacco (
Zealexins and kauralexins are two acidic terpenoid phytoalexins mediate biotic damages caused by insect and pathogen in aboveground part of maize plants. Recently it is showed that terpenoid phytoalexins also protect root damages under abiotic stress factors such as drought and salinity stress. Wild type maize plant accumulated terpenoid phytoalexins are positively correlated with the biomass accumulation of the plants. On the other side, mutant maize deficient with kauralexin synthesis are sensitive to water deficit condition [51]. Carnosic acid (CA), a diterpene protect Labiatae species from water stress-induced oxidative damages in combination with that of other low-molecular weight antioxidants (α-tocopherol and ascorbate) in chloroplasts [52]. These findings suggest that terpenes protect plants from biotic and abiotic stress damages due to their antioxidant properties or direct quenching of oxidants.
Phenolics are one of the most ubiquitous groups of SMs which are synthesize in plants and possess biological properties like antifeedant [53], antioxidant, anti-apoptosis, anti-aging, anticarcinogenic, anti-inflammation, and cell proliferation activity. Phenolics consist of an aromatic ring with one or more hydroxyl groups. Coumarin, furano-coumarins, lignin, flavonoids, isoflavonoids and tanins are the available forms of phenolics. Phenolics are often produced and accumulated in the sub-epidermal layers of plant tissues exposed to stress and pathogen attack [54]. The concentration of a particular phenolic compound within a plant tissue is dependent on season and may also vary at different stages of growth and development [55]. Several internal and external factors, including trauma, wounding, drought and pathogen attack, affect the synthesis and accumulation of phenolics [56, 57].
Phenolics are ubiquitous SMs in plants serves as a protective agent, inhibitors, natural animal toxicants and pesticides against invading herbivores, nematodes, phytophagous insects, and fungal and bacterial pathogens [58, 59]. Among the phenolic compounds coumarins are simple phenolic widespread in vascular plants and appear to function in different capacities in various plant defense mechanisms against insect herbivores and fungi. Several studies in many different plant species have shown that coumarins can accumulate in response to infection by a diversity of pathogens, including viruses, bacteria, fungi and oomycetes. The extent and timing of coumarin accumulation in plant parts have been associated with the level of disease resistance [60, 61]. The phenolic compounds ferulic acid and protocatecuic acid are accumulated increasingly in rice by the fungal attack to reduce mycotoxin. The accumulation of phenolics in plant tissues is considered as an adaptive response of plants to adverse environmental conditions. In response to various external stimuli plant cell increases accumulation of phenolic substances. Therefore, the degree of interactions between plants and their changing environments has been a major driving force behind the emergence of specific natural products. For example, cold stress increases phenolic production into the cell wall in winter rye (

Nature of responses of phenolic compounds to abiotic stress in some plant species.
A large family of N and S containing SMs found in approximately 20% of the species of vascular plants, most frequently in the herbaceous dicot and relatively a few in monocots and gymnosperms. They include alkaloids, cyanogenic glucosides, non-protein amino acids phytoalexins, thionine, defensins and allinin. Most of them are biosynthesized from common amino acids.
Alkaloids are nitrogenous organic SMs that have been shown to have antimicrobial activity (such as quinolones, metronidazole, or others) through inhibiting enzyme activity or other mechanisms. Squalamine, a polyamine alkaloid, acts through a detergent-like mechanism of action against gram-negative bacteria, leading to the disruption of their outer membranes, and it depolarizes gram-positive bacterial membranes [77].
Phytoalexins are S containing SMs, in response to fungal and bacterial pathogen, other forms of stress such as mechanical damages accumulate in the infection sites. The accumulation of phytoalexins limit the spreading of pathogen by inducing cell death known as hypersensitive response (HR) in a diverse group of plants. Defensins, thionins and lectins S-rich SMs accumulate in pathogen attack and external injury. These compounds also showed broad range of inhibition of microbial pathogen such as fungi and bacteria [78]. Glucosinolates are sulfur-rich SMs, widely synthesized in all vegetable and oilseed species of the order Brassicales (
Alkaloids are N containing SMs also trigger adaption mechanism of plants. The concentration of four kind of alkaloids such as vindoline, catharanthine, vinblastine and vincristine significantly increased with the increasing saline concentration but the total dry weight to some extent were decreased. The reduction in plant growth may be an adaptive response to salt stress which allows the conservation of energy, thereby launching the appropriate defense response and also reducing the risk of heritable damage [81]. Plant tolerance to stresses is jointly controlled by the plants’ anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, genetics, development and evolution. In addition to the primary metabolites, in response to various stresses either biotic and abiotic plants start to synthesize SMs in their cell. As a result, some physiological modification such as metabolic adjustment, ion and water balance, regulation of stomatal conductance, activation of different types of antioxidant and enzyme occurs which help the plant to increase tolerance level. Plant tolerance and adaptation mechanism to stressful conditions are mainly adjusted by the modifying primary metabolism pathway. According to the aforementioned data, SMs functions on stress adaptation are established in the recent year. Therefore, manipulating the generation and action of SMs and the activity of genes responsible for the accumulation of SMs are critically important to enhance the tolerance level and adaptability of plants under stressful conditions.

\n\nThe first step in obtaining funds for your Open Access publication begins with your institution or library. IntechOpen’s publishing standards align with most institutional funding programs. Our advice is to petition your institution for help in financing your Open Access publication.
\n\nHowever, as Open Access becomes a more commonly used publishing option for the dissemination of scientific and scholarly content, in addition to institutions, there are a growing number of funders who allow the use of grants for covering OA publication costs, or have established separate funds for the same purpose.

Keep in mind that this list is not definitive, and while we are constantly updating and informing our Authors of new funding opportunities, we recommend that you always check with your institution first.

\n\nOur mission is to support Authors in publishing their research and making an impact within the scientific community. Currently, 14% of Authors receive full waivers and 6% receive partial waivers.
\n\nWhile providing support and advice to all our international Authors, waiver priority will be given to those Authors who reside in countries that are classified by the World Bank as low-income economies. In this way, we can help ensure that the scientific work being carried out can make an impact within the worldwide scientific community, no matter where an Author might live.

orthopaedic surgery, autograft is considered to be the gold standard for correction of fracture repair or other bone pathologies. But, it has some limitations such as donor site morbidity and shortage of supply, which evolved the use of allograft that also has some disadvantages such as immunogenic response to the host, low osteogenicity as well as possibilities of disease transmission. Despite the benefits of autografts and allografts, the limitations of each have necessitated the pursuit of alternatives biomaterials that has the ability to initiate osteogenesis, and the graft should closely mimic the natural bone along with regeneration of fibroblasts. A variety of artificial materials such as demineralised bone matrix, coralline hydroxyapatite and calcium phosphate-based ceramics such as hydroxyapatite (HA), β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) and bioactive glass have been used over the decades to fill bone defects almost without associated soft tissue development. Most of them were having only the properties of osteointegration and osteoconduction. Only bioactive glass possesses osteogenic property that stimulates proliferation and differentiation of osteoprogenitor cells and in some cases influencing the fibroblastic properties. But, this material has also some disadvantages such as short-term and low mechanical strength along with decreased fracture resistance; but, this was further minimised by ion doping that positively enhanced new bone formation. There are many metal ions such as magnesium (Mg), strontium (Sr), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), silver (Ag) and some rare earths that have been doped successfully into bioactive glass to enhance their mechanical and biological properties. In some of the cases, mesoporous bioactive glass materials with or without such doping have also been employed (with homogeneous distribution of pores in the size ranging between 2 and 50 nm). These biomaterials can be served as scaffold for bone regeneration with adequate mechanical properties to restore bone defects and facilitate healing process by regeneration of soft tissues as well. Because of the limitations of the currently used techniques for the reconstruction of bone defects and the difficulties for the implementation of new therapeutic strategies, a new paradigm in the field of reconstructive surgery has arisen, leading to tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) have emerged as a promising alternative for the treatment of bone lesions. It was postulated that the therapeutic action was the result of proliferation and differentiation of MSCs, replacing injured tissue. However, recent studies have shown that MSCs secrete a number of trophic factors that have a strong effect during repair and tissue regeneration. This represents a shift from a paradigm centered on MSC proliferation and differentiation to a new paradigm in which the MSCs exert their beneficial effect by the secretion of paracrine factors that induce endogenous repair mechanisms. Interventions meant to correct these conditions are commonly based on symmetrical models of appearance and do not take into account asymmetric organ weight distribution, asymmetries of respiratory mechanics, and dominant movement patterns that are reinforced in daily functional activities. A model of innate, human asymmetry derived from the theoretical framework of the Postural Restoration Institute® (PRI) explicitly describes the physiological, biomechanical, and respiratory components of human asymmetry. This model is important because it gives an accurate baseline for understanding predisposing factors for the development of postural disorders, which, without intervention, will likely progress to structural dysfunction. Clinical tests to evaluate tri-planar musculoskeletal relationships and function, developed by PRI, are based on this asymmetric model. These tests are valuable for assessing patient’s status in the context of human asymmetry and in guiding appropriate exercise prescription and progression. Balancing musculoskeletal asymmetry is the aim of PRI treatment. Restoration of relative balance decreases pain, restores improved alignment, and strengthens appropriate muscle function. It can also halt the progression of dysfunction and improve respiration, quality of life, and appearance. Dr. Kasenga worked in different places in and outside Malawi, and has held various positions, such as Licensed Medical Officer, HIV/AIDS Programme Officer, HIV/AIDS resource person in the International Department of Diakonhjemet College, Oslo, Norway. He also managed an Integrated HIV/AIDS Prevention programme for over 5 years. He is currently working as a Director for the Health Ministries Department of Malawi Union of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Dr. Kasenga has published over 5 articles on HIV/AIDS issues focusing on Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV (PMTCT), including a book chapter on HIV testing counseling (currently in press).
