Nick Tyler

Professor Nick Tyler CBE FREng is the Chadwick Professor of Civil Engineering at UCL. He is working extensively with bodies such as Transport for London, national and local governments, and civil society, currently in the UK, EU, Latin America, Japan, China and Lebanon, to help create an adaptive and sustainable urban realm which is responsive to people and their needs. These projects include the fusion of arts, music, dance, engineering, design and neuroscience to create ways of making places better for people, considering especially the perception of time and multisensoriality in the design of sociopetal opportunities. His transformative approach to engineering has created new educational approaches to engineering education, and driven people-centred research in different types of people-environment situations, including transport vehicles and infrastructure and ways of thinking about tackling the design of environments for both people and planet. He has created PEARL (People-Environment-Activity Research Laboratory), a £47M massive multiscale multisensorial laboratory for studying the interactions of environments, people and their activities at life-scale, which is currently under construction, and will replace his current laboratory, which has been in operation for over 12 years. He is a co-investigator of the UCL Ecological Brain Doctoral Training Programme, and Director of the UCL Centre for Transport Studies.
