António Pereira

University of Aveiro Portugal

António Bastos Pereira has a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering. Since 2000, he has been a professor and researcher at the University of Aveiro, Portugal, where he held management positions in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He is currently a director and researcher at the Centre for Mechanical Technology and Automation, University of Aveiro. His research focuses on the study of materials, including composites and metals. He has 80 journal articles to his credit. Dr. Pereira has collaborated on thirty scientific research projects, having been the principal investigator for eighteen.

Composites are used in a wide range of applications, from electronics to the aeronautical industry. The excellent mechanical properties and low-specific weight of composites are the basis of many structural applications. Despite the progress achieved, there are significant obstacles to the generalisation of structural applications of composites, mainly due to their high cost and complex mechanical behaviour. In fact, there is currently insufficient knowledge regarding the mechanical properties and failure mechanisms of composites made from renewable and sustainable materials. This book focuses on composites from natural and renewable resources, including the enhancement of their properties with additives such as biodegradable nanomaterials, their mechanical characterisation, tailoring of properties for specific applications and their processing.

The high‐pressure torsion (HPT) process has been the subject of many investigations as a new method of processing for nanostructured materials due to its ability to develop nanostructures with high‐angle grain boundaries. This chapter examines the various publications describing the experimental studies of the effect of HPT on the mechanical behaviors and alterations of microstructural features in applications to various pure and alloyed metals. Moreover, an overview of the modeling approaches developed through the last decade, considering the main advantages/limitations, is analyzed.

Adhesive joints are nowadays widely used in fields ranging from packaging to aeronautics. Nevertheless, the absence of accurate failure criteria remains an important obstacle that often prevents the use of adhesive joints in structural applications. The main objective of this work is to be an introduction to the subject, and it was for this to evaluate the factors that most influence the strength of overlap adhesive joints.
