The prefrontal cortex plays an essential role in various cognitive functions and little is known about how such neural mechanisms develop during childhood yet. To better understand this issue, we focus the literature on the development of the prefrontal cortex during early childhood, the changes in structural architecture, neural activity, and cognitive abilities. The prefrontal cortex undergoes maturation during childhood with a reduction of synaptic and neuronal density, a growth of dendrites, and an increase in white matter volume. With these neuroanatomical changes, neural networks construct appropriate for complex cognitive processing. The organization of prefrontal cortical circuitry may have been critical to the occurrence of human-specific executive and social-emotional functions, and developmental pathology in these same systems underlies many psychiatric disorders; therefore, if we understand these developmental process well, we could better analyze the development of psychiatric disorders.",signatures:"Merve Cikili Uytun",downloadPdfUrl:"/chapter/pdf-download/63179",previewPdfUrl:"/chapter/pdf-preview/63179",authors:[{id:"163607",title:"Dr.",name:"Merve",surname:"Cikili",slug:"merve-cikili",fullName:"Merve Cikili"}],corrections:null},{id:"62290",title:"The Dynamic Maturation Process of the Brain Structures, Visual System and Their Connections to the Structures of the Prefrontal Cortex during 4–6 Years of Age",doi:"10.5772/intechopen.79169",slug:"the-dynamic-maturation-process-of-the-brain-structures-visual-system-and-their-connections-to-the-st",totalDownloads:1411,totalCrossrefCites:0,totalDimensionsCites:0,hasAltmetrics:0,abstract:"The chapter summarizes an author’s research in the field of child neuropsychology, devoted to the dynamics of non-verbal visual gnosis in 365 children aged 4–6 with typical development. Data from a study of perceptual operations in difficult conditions (a sample to identify incomplete images), the deficits in which they are considered as a predictor of dyslexia, are analyzed. Against the backdrop of a predominantly analytical (left brain) strategy in the processing of visual incentives, a progressive improvement in the holistic (right brain) strategy was also noted, especially in children aged 6. The positive dynamics of identifying visual stimuli in difficult conditions by integrating distinct signs in the 4–6-year period is explained both by the activation of the holistic processing strategy and by the increasing participation of the prefrontal cortex in the functioning of the complex forms of non-verbal visual gnosis.",signatures:"Neli Cvetanova Vasileva",downloadPdfUrl:"/chapter/pdf-download/62290",previewPdfUrl:"/chapter/pdf-preview/62290",authors:[{id:"243925",title:"Prof.",name:"Neli",surname:"Cvetanova Vasileva",slug:"neli-cvetanova-vasileva",fullName:"Neli Cvetanova Vasileva"}],corrections:null},{id:"63249",title:"Frontal Lobe: Functional Neuroanatomy of Its Circuitry and Related Disconnection Syndromes",doi:"10.5772/intechopen.79571",slug:"frontal-lobe-functional-neuroanatomy-of-its-circuitry-and-related-disconnection-syndromes",totalDownloads:1523,totalCrossrefCites:1,totalDimensionsCites:1,hasAltmetrics:0,abstract:"Disconnection syndromes are classified as higher function deficits that result from lesions to white matter or association cortices, the latter acting as relay stations between primary motor, sensory, and limbic areas. In 1965, Norman Geschwind brought disconnection to the fore after publishing a paper entitled “Disconnexion syndromes in animals and man.” In the last decades, a large number of studies concerning this topic have been published in order to elucidate new perspectives of localizationist view of brain functioning. In view of those considerations, it is noteworthy to mention that the understanding of connection pathways involving frontal lobe is one of the most challenging fields of research in neuroscience. The better comprehension of those concepts is an important mark for the multidisciplinarity of neurology, neurosurgery, and psychiatry. Conventional studies have highlighted the role of inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) in processing context-independent linguistic information in speech and discourse. However, it is unclear how the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), the lateral prefrontal cortex (lPFC), and other structures (such as medial superior frontal gyrus, premotor cortex, anterior cingulate cortex, etc.) are involved when socially relevant language is encountered in real-life scenarios. Emerging neuroimaging and patient studies have suggested the association of prefrontal regions with individual differences and impairments in the comprehension of speech act, nonliteral language, or construction-based pragmatic information. By summarizing and synthesizing the most recent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies, this chapter aims to show how neurocognitive components underlying the social function of prefrontal cortex support pragmatic language processing, such as weighing relevant social signals, resolving ambiguities, and identifying hidden speaker meanings. The conclusion lends impact on an emerging interest in neuropragmatics and points out a promising line of research to address the mediating role of prefrontal cortex in the relation of language and social cognition.",signatures:"Xiaoming Jiang",downloadPdfUrl:"/chapter/pdf-download/62392",previewPdfUrl:"/chapter/pdf-preview/62392",authors:[{id:"189844",title:"Prof.",name:"Xiaoming",surname:"Jiang",slug:"xiaoming-jiang",fullName:"Xiaoming Jiang"}],corrections:null},{id:"62849",title:"Hemoglobin (Hb) - Oxyhemoglobin (HbO) Variation in Rehabilitation Processes Involving Prefrontal Cortex",doi:"10.5772/intechopen.79163",slug:"hemoglobin-hb-oxyhemoglobin-hbo-variation-in-rehabilitation-processes-involving-prefrontal-cortex",totalDownloads:1084,totalCrossrefCites:0,totalDimensionsCites:0,hasAltmetrics:0,abstract:"The prefrontal cortex is the anterior part of the frontal lobe, situated before the primary motor cortex and the premotor cortex and plays a role in the regulation of complex cognitive, emotional and behavioral functioning. In fact, various prefrontal areas of the brain are activated when individuals mentalize about themselves and about other people. Interestingly, the latest accounts of the relationship between mindreading and metacognition clearly favor arguments for interactionism between functionally different mechanisms in the formation of our social knowledge. In particular, a two-level architecture enables a mutual interaction within a complex metacognitive system that is evolutionarily structured into higher and lower level metacognition with different functions and tasks. In our opinion, cognitive architecture of such systems needs to include conscious mechanisms that incorporate information accessibility as activation through the interaction. Here, we will argue that the combination of the two-level account on mindreading and metacognition along with a global broadcasting architecture embedded in the human brain is a good starting point that explains formation of accurate social knowledge and access to such knowledge. In our opinion, it becomes clear that consciousness via the interaction activates many unconscious brain regions, including interpreter systems such as metacognition and mindreading.",signatures:"Małgorzata Gakis, Ewelina Cichoń, Tomasz Cyrkot and The term "neurorehabilitation" is defined as "concepts, evaluation methods, therapies, and devices that apply the knowledge of brain theory revealed by neuroscience and related research to rehabilitation medicine. The concept of neurorehabilitation is widely accepted in physical therapy, and evaluation and treatment based on this concept are being practiced. What is required in neurorehabilitation research is to analyze the changes and improvements in motor behavior and cognitive and learning abilities and the changes in brain functions that bring about these changes. This will allow us to get closer to the neural mechanisms of rehabilitation effects and is expected to develop effective methods that are more suitable for the subject.
\r\n\r\n\tThe purpose of this book is to provide a broad introduction to neurorehabilitation, from basic research to advanced treatment and science and technology, which is also being developed in the field of physical therapy. This book hopes to cover three topics related to neurorehabilitation and physical therapy (basic research, applied research, and advanced technology).

Wearable technologies are becoming increasingly popular as personal health system, enabling continuous real-time monitoring of human health on a daily basis and outside clinical environments [1, 2, 3]. The wearable device market is currently having a worldwide profit of around $34 billion and is expected to reach above $50 billion by 2022 owing to wearables’ ease of use, flexibility, and convenience [4]. Real-time monitoring, operational efficiency, and fitness tracking are reported as main factors supporting the market growth of health wearable devices such as smart watches, smart glasses, and other wellness gadgets, with expected $12.1 billion world market by 2021 [5].
\nIn the past decade, the recent progress in developing wearable devices was more focused on monitoring physical parameters, such as motion, respiration rate, etc. [3, 6, 7]. Today, there is a great interest in evolving wearable sensors capable of detecting chemical markers relevant to the status of health. Different approaches have been applied by researchers to design and fabricate wearable biosensors for remote monitoring of metabolites and electrolytes in body fluids including tear, sweat, and saliva [3, 8, 9, 10]. A great example would be the development of small and reliable sensors that would allow continuous glucose monitoring in diabetic patients [11, 12]. Diabetes is a chronic disease that can significantly impact on quality of life and reduce life expectancy. However, diabetics can stay one step ahead of the disease by monitoring their blood glucose level to minimize the complication of the disease by proper administration of insulin. Currently, blood analysis is the gold standard method for measuring the level of glucose in patient’s blood. However, this technique cannot be applied without penetrating the skin, which can be painful and inconvenient, and requires user obedience. Therefore, current research focuses on the development of portable and wearable devices capable of continuous glucose sensing through noninvasive detection techniques.
\nA majority of the recent studies in this field have targeted the area of personalized medicine, endeavoring to develop miniaturized wearable devices featuring real-time glucose monitoring in diabetic patients [12, 13, 14, 15]. One great example is contact lens which is an ideal wearable device that can be worn for hours without any pain or discomfort [16]. Integration of glucose biosensors into contact lenses has recently been demonstrated by several research groups [9, 17, 18]. However, the level of glucose in tear fluid is very low (0.1–0.6 mM), requiring a high sensitivity of the sensor for picking up the signal from expected chemical reaction [3, 19]. Yao et al. [16] have fabricated a contact lens with integrated sensor for continuous tear glucose monitoring with wireless communication system over a distance of several centimeters. The sensor demonstrated a fast response of 20 s with a minimum detection of less than 0.01 mM glucose, which is 10–60 times lower than glucose level in human tear [16].
\nIn addition to glucose, lactate is an important metabolite in the human body, which gets converted into l-lactate under hypoxic condition [20]. l-Lactate levels in tear fluid is about 1–5 mmol L−1, which might increase significantly due to some heath conditions including ischemia, inadequate tissue oxygenation, stroke, and different types of cancer [21]. Thomas et al. [22] demonstrated an invasive detection of lactate in human tear by integrating an amperometric lactate sensor with Pt working (WE) and reference (RE) electrodes as well as a counter electrode (CE) as current drain, on a polymer-based contact lens, measuring lactate in situ in human tears without any need for physical sampling [22].
\nVery recently, Park et al. [17] reported a novel approach for fabricating fully transparent and stretchable smart contact lens capable of wirelessly monitoring the level of glucose in the tears of diabetic patients. Figure 1 shows the layout of fabricated devices made of glucose sensors, wireless circuit, and display pixel on soft and transparent contact lens substrate (Figure 1a and b). The circuit diagram of the device is illustrated in Figure 1a, with radio frequency antenna receiving signals from a transmitter and a rectifier converting the signals to DC (Figure 1a and c). A continuous network of ultralong Ag nanofibers was used as stretchable electrodes for the antenna and interconnects (Figure 1d). In the case of any change in the concentration of glucose in tear, the sensor resistance changes resulting in the light-emitting diode (LED) pixel turning on or off. The device was tested in vitro using a live rabbit, providing substantial finding for smart contact lenses as one of the promising wearable devices in healthcare system [17].

In addition to tear, sweat electrolyte concentrations and blood serum are related [2, 8]. As one of the most readily accessible human biofluids, a great deal of information about the human body and its physical performance could be obtained via monitoring sweat electrolyte concentrations [23, 24]. Several groups have reported the key biomarkers in human sweat (e.g., sodium level, pH change, lactate concentration) relevant to human health and well-being, for monitoring athletic performance during sporting activities [25]. Jia et al. fabricated a skin-worn tattoo-based sensor for real-time monitoring of lactate in human sweat, offering substantial benefits for biomedical as well as sport applications [25]. In another approach, Curto et al. [26] fabricated a wearable and flexible microfluidic platform capable of monitoring changes in the sweat pH in real time. Anastasova et al. [27] developed a flexible microfluidic device for real-time monitoring of metabolite such as lactate as well as electrolytes such as pH and sodium in human sweat. Recently, Gao et al. [28] developed a flexible and wearable device (Figure 2) made of arrays of sensors for real-time monitoring of heavy metals, such as Zn, Cu, and Hg in human sweat. The device fabrication method is presented in Figure 2a, showing the deposition and stripping steps on microelectrodes. The sensing mechanism was based on an electrochemical detection of targeted heavy metals through four microelectrodes, including Au and Bi working electrodes, Ag reference electrode, and an Au counter electrode (Figure 2b and c). The fabricated device demonstrated high stability and selectivity toward heavy metals, providing a great platform to advancing the field of wearable biosensors for healthcare application, via monitoring the level of some heavy metals in human sweat [28]. A balanced level of Zn is necessary in the human body as a low and high Zn concentration can lead to pneumonia and liver damages, respectively [29, 30]. High level of Cu in the human body can lead to several diseases including Wilson’s disease and heart, kidney, and liver failures as well as brain diseases [31, 32]. The fabricated device demonstrated high stability and selectivity toward heavy metals, providing a great platform to advancing the field of wearable biosensors for healthcare application [28].

Saliva, as a great diagnostic fluid, can be used in personal health devices for real-time monitoring of chemical markers including salivary lactate analysis [33]. Chai et al. developed a saliva nanosensor with a radio-frequency identification tag, integrated into dental implants for detecting cardiac biomarkers in saliva and predicting close heart attack in patients suffering from cardiovascular diseases [34]. In another approach, an instrumented mouthguard was designed and fabricated by Kim et al. [35] for measuring salivary uric acid levels which could be a biomarker for several diseases including hyperuricemia, gout, physical stress, and renal syndrome. The fabricated device showed high selectivity and sensitivity to low level of uric acid as well as great stability during a 4-h operation period [35]. Mannoor et al. [36] developed a hybrid biosensor made of graphene layers printed onto water-soluble silk, for noninvasive detection of bacteria through body fluids including sweat and saliva. This graphene/silk hybrid device illustrated an extremely high sensitivity to bacteria in body fluid with detection limits down to a single bacterium [36]. In addition, the fabricated device provided the potential users with battery-free operation and wireless communication system via radio frequency [36]. Arakawa et al. [37] designed and fabricated a salivary sensor equipped with a wireless measurement system, embedded onto a mouthguard support, featuring a high sensitivity toward detection of glucose over a range of 5–1000 μmol L−1. The device demonstrated a great stability during a 5-h real-time glucose monitoring period in an artificial saliva with a phantom jaw [37]. In a similar approach, de Castro et al. [38] developed a microfluidic paper-based device integrated into a mouthguard, for continues monitoring of glucose and nitrite in human saliva. The saliva samples were collected from periodontitis and/or diabetes patients as well as healthy individuals. The fabricated device featured a low detection limit of 27 and 7 μmol L−1 for glucose and nitrite, respectively [38].
\nIn summary, there is a great potential for micro- and nanosensors’ integration into healthcare monitoring devices, developing new technologies for noninvasive detection of diseases in the human body. Flexible wearable devices offer promising capabilities in real-time monitoring of body fluids including tear, sweat, and saliva. However, more research is required to expand the use of wearable platforms in continuous analysis of body fluids, providing reliable real-time detection of targeting ions and proteins, among other complex analytes.
\nMuch attention is being paid to research and development of technology that provide noncontact measurement of vital signs, such as heartbeat, respiration, and body temperature, which are important for understanding the state of a person’s health. In the past, a practice called “悬丝诊脉 (suspension examination)” was documented in China’s Tang Dynasty, 1400 years ago. Prominent physician Sun Simiao used strings to perform pulse diagnosis from the radial artery pulse without touching the patient’s body, demonstrating that minute movements on the body’s surface and changes in facial coloring have been used to obtain biological information and perform diagnoses since long ago. In recent years, as technology for sensing biological information has progressed, new biological measurement sensors have been developed successively. There have also been reports regarding methods for measuring respiration or heartbeat using pressure sensors [1], microwave radar [2], air mattresses, or high-polymer piezoelectric film. The methods have wide-ranging applications, including systems for monitoring elderly people [3], identification of sleep apnea [4], detection of patients suspected to have an infectious disease [5, 6], and noncontact measurement of stress levels [7]. In this chapter, the principles behind noncontact measurement of respiration and heartbeat using infrared/RGB facial-image analysis are discussed, along with the applications for such measurement in the detection of patients suspected to be suffering from an infectious disease.
\nThe blood vessels throughout the body are broadly categorized as arteries or veins, and there is a difference in the manner in which the volume of blood flowing through each blood vessel type changes. Blood flow volume through veins changes little, whereas blood flow volume through arteries varies according to the pulse. Further, one of the properties of oxygenated hemoglobin in the blood flowing through arteries is that it easily absorbs light from a specific wavelength. Because of these properties, when the skin is exposed to continuous light of a specific wavelength, the reflected light changes according to variation in blood flow volume, and the pulse waveform can be obtained by continuing to measure that reflected light [8]. The pulse wave obtained here is referred to as a volume pulse wave.
\nThe simplicity and noninvasiveness of obtaining measurements with a photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor have led to the PPG sensor’s application as a tool for monitoring health [9, 10]. In PPG sensors, light is emitted from a dedicated light source (wavelengths 660 and 940 nm), and the volume pulse wave is obtained by measuring the reflected light with photodiodes. In this study, heartbeat was measured with an RGB camera by substituting ambient light for the dedicated light source and an RGB camera for the photodiodes and then measuring the form of the volume pulse wave in the same way as in PPG. Because of the degree of skin exposure and ease of detection, the heartbeat waveform was measured from the face. Additionally, respiration was measured by using thermography to detect nasal-region temperature changes associated with respiration. During exhalation, warm air from inside the lungs is released and it increases the temperature in the nasal region, whereas during inhalation, cool air from the external environment is breathed in and it lowers the temperature in the nasal region. The respiration waveform can be obtained by using an infrared camera to measure such nasal-region temperature changes associated with respiration. Figure 1 shows the principles of measuring respiratory/heart rate using infrared/RGB facial-image analysis.
\nPrinciples of measuring respiratory/heart rate using infrared/RGB facial-image analysis.
The experiment was conducted with ten healthy university students. An infrared/RGB camera was set up 50 cm in front of the measurement subjects, and the subjects were instructed to sit and maintain a resting state. Images were taken for 30-s periods when at rest and after exercise (ergometer exercise: 70 rpm, 100 W, 2-min duration). Furthermore, measurements were also taken simultaneously using thoracoabdominal respiration sensors and an electrocardiogram as references for respiratory rate and heart rate, respectively (Figure 2).
\nExperimental protocol.
The nasal area was manually extracted from the infrared images taken (150 × 150 pixels). During respiration, the temperature of the nasal area changes as air moves in and out. These temperature changes over time were recorded to create a waveform. A band-pass filter (0.17–0.42 Hz) was applied to this waveform by a signal processer. Then, the waveform was normalized, and the autocorrelation function was calculated. Last, the respiratory rate was calculated based on the peak interval of the autocorrelation function calculated earlier. Meanwhile, the visible images taken with the RGB camera were converted to a single color (green), and an area centered on the nose (150 × 180 pixels) was extracted. The formula below was applied to the extracted image to calculate luminance value Y [11]:
\nThe luminance values calculated were recorded over time to create a waveform. A band-pass filter (0.83–2.5 Hz) was applied to this waveform. Afterward, the same type of processing as in respiratory rate calculation was performed to calculate the heartbeat.
\nFigure 3(a) shows the respiration-heartbeat curves obtained from the thoracoabdominal respiration sensors and infrared images. Figure 3(b) shows the heartbeat curves obtained from the ECG and visible images. They demonstrate that both respiration and heartbeat are similar to the curves obtained from the references.
\nRespiration curves obtained from thoracoabdominal respiration sensors and infrared images; heartbeat curves obtained from ECG and visible images. (a) The respiratory rate signal obtained from IR camera. (b) The heartbeat signal obtained from RGB camera.
Next, a Bland-Altman analysis was applied to all 20 pieces of data obtained from each subject at rest and after exercising, and the accuracy was verified (Figure 4). The results for respiratory rate were as follows: a correlation coefficient of 0.99 (p < 0.01), an average difference of −0.03 (breaths per minute) between the respiratory rates obtained from the infrared images and thoracoabdominal respiration sensors, and a 95% confidence interval of −1.04 to 0.9 (breaths per minute). The results for heart rate were as follows: a correlation coefficient of 0.96 (p < 0.01), an average difference of −0.27 (beats per minute) between the respiratory rates obtained from the visible images and ECG, and a 95% confidence interval of −6.1 to 5.5 (beats per minute). These results demonstrate that highly accurate measurement of respiratory rate and heart rate are possible, regardless of how those values fluctuate (respiratory rate: 9.2–23.9 breaths per minute, heart rate: 47.9–93.9 beats per minute).

In recent years, much importance has been placed on developing new quarantine systems to use against emerging infectious diseases and epidemics involving new strains of viruses. From past outbreaks of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) to the H1N1 flu virus, a variety of infectious diseases have spread widely, causing damage to countries around the world. Although some of those infectious diseases are in the process of being eradicated, there are also fears about outbreaks of reemerging and emerging infectious diseases. In these conditions, it is essential to take preventive measures at national borders at the time when a person enters the country, and quarantine inspection at airports and the like includes interview-based medical exams using questionnaires and fever checks with thermography. However, because the former method relies on voluntary cooperation from people entering the country, false statements are a possibility, and the latter method has its own limits, for example, it does not cover passengers who have taken antifebrile medication. To overcome these challenges in quarantine inspections, Matsui and Sun et al. are developing infectious-disease screening systems using multiple biosensors that measure vital signs to identify symptomatic people [5, 6]. As a result of being infected, not only body temperature but also heart and respiration rates increase. The system automatically detects infected individuals within 15 s by a discriminant function using measured vital signs. Heart and respiration rates are determined using a microwave radar by noncontact way, and facial skin temperature is monitored by a thermographic camera. By using these three parameters, the detection accuracy of the system improved ranged from 81.5 to 98.0% in case-control studies. This is notably higher compared to the conventional screening methods using only thermography.
\nConsidering future practical applications for infectious-disease screening systems, it would be beneficial to build infectious-disease screening systems powered by image analysis using infrared cameras [12]. There are four reasons for this. (1) Infrared cameras are already used at airport quarantine stations around the world and are extremely versatile. (2) It is possible to measure vital signs by simply changing a camera’s software. (3) When vital signs can be measured, and symptomatic people identified by taking images with just a camera, the need for quarantine can be determined using existing equipment without the need to bring in new devices. (4) There is a lower risk of secondary infection caused by contact with equipment, such as measurement devices.
\nA clinical evaluation was conducted to confirm the accuracy of identifications made by an infectious-disease screening system using infrared/RGB facial-image analysis (Figure 5). We used an infrared RGB camera to measure facial surface temperature, respiratory rate, and heart rate over a period of 10 s in a symptomatic group of 16 people (average age 36.6 ± 14.1) diagnosed with influenza A (seven people) or influenza B (nine people) by a physician. The same measurements were taken in a healthy group of 22 people (average age 43 ± 18.7). The identification accuracy was verified by conducting a logistic regression analysis of the symptomatic and healthy groups based on the subjects’ body surface temperature, respiratory rate, and heart rate measured using image analysis:
\nThe infectious disease screening system using infrared/RGB facial-image analysis.
Here, \n
The goal of this study was to develop an infectious-disease screening system using infrared/RGB facial-image analysis. Furthermore, to make this system a reality, we verified the accuracy and clinically evaluated measurement of respiratory rate and heart rate using infrared/RGB images. The results confirmed that measuring respiratory rate and heart rate using infrared/RGB analysis makes highly accurate measurement possible.
\nThis chapter introduced the principles behind noncontact measurement of respiration and heartbeat using infrared/RGB facial-image analysis, and the applications for such measurement in the detection of patients suspected to have an infectious disease were explored. Looking toward future practical applications, elimination of noise caused by body movement and a face/nose tracking function for automatic measurement of heart and respiratory rates will likely be added, improving the accuracy and stability of measurements, and we can expect this technology to be applied in a variety of ways.

The interest of Javier's lab is the study of cell signaling with a special focus on Ca2+ signaling, and how Ca2+ transport modulates the cytoskeleton, migration, differentiation, cell death, etc. He is especially interested in the study of Ca2+ channels, and the role of STIM1 in the initiation of pathological events.",institutionString:null, institution:{name:"University of Extremadura",country:{name:"Spain"}}},{id:"217323",title:"Prof.",name:"Guang-Jer",middleName:null,surname:"Wu",slug:"guang-jer-wu",fullName:"Guang-Jer Wu",position:null,profilePictureURL:"https://mts.intechopen.com/storage/users/217323/images/8027_n.jpg",biography:null,institutionString:null,institution:null},{id:"148546",title:"Dr.",name:"Norma Francenia",middleName:null,surname:"Santos-Sánchez",slug:"norma-francenia-santos-sanchez",fullName:"Norma Francenia Santos-Sánchez",position:null,profilePictureURL:"https://mts.intechopen.com/storage/users/148546/images/4640_n.jpg",biography:null,institutionString:null,institution:null},{id:"272889",title:"Dr.",name:"Narendra",middleName:null,surname:"Maddu",slug:"narendra-maddu",fullName:"Narendra Maddu",position:null,profilePictureURL:"https://mts.intechopen.com/storage/users/272889/images/10758_n.jpg",biography:null,institutionString:null,institution:null},{id:"242491",title:"Prof.",name:"Angelica",middleName:null,surname:"Rueda",slug:"angelica-rueda",fullName:"Angelica Rueda",position:"Investigador Cinvestav 3B",profilePictureURL:"https://mts.intechopen.com/storage/users/242491/images/6765_n.jpg",biography:null,institutionString:null,institution:null},{id:"88631",title:"Dr.",name:"Ivan",middleName:null,surname:"Petyaev",slug:"ivan-petyaev",fullName:"Ivan Petyaev",position:null,profilePictureURL:"//cdnintech.com/web/frontend/www/assets/author.svg",biography:null,institutionString:null,institution:{name:"Lycotec (United Kingdom)",country:{name:"United Kingdom"}}},{id:"423869",title:"Ms.",name:"Smita",middleName:null,surname:"Rai",slug:"smita-rai",fullName:"Smita Rai",position:null,profilePictureURL:"//cdnintech.com/web/frontend/www/assets/author.svg",biography:null,institutionString:null,institution:{name:"Integral University",country:{name:"India"}}},{id:"424024",title:"Prof.",name:"Swati",middleName:null,surname:"Sharma",slug:"swati-sharma",fullName:"Swati Sharma",position:null,profilePictureURL:"//cdnintech.com/web/frontend/www/assets/author.svg",biography:null,institutionString:null,institution:{name:"Integral University",country:{name:"India"}}},{id:"439112",title:"MSc.",name:"Touseef",middleName:null,surname:"Fatima",slug:"touseef-fatima",fullName:"Touseef Fatima",position:null,profilePictureURL:"//cdnintech.com/web/frontend/www/assets/author.svg",biography:null,institutionString:null,institution:{name:"Integral University",country:{name:"India"}}},{id:"424836",title:"Dr.",name:"Orsolya",middleName:null,surname:"Borsai",slug:"orsolya-borsai",fullName:"Orsolya Borsai",position:null,profilePictureURL:"//cdnintech.com/web/frontend/www/assets/author.svg",biography:null,institutionString:null,institution:{name:"University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Cluj-Napoca",country:{name:"Romania"}}},{id:"422262",title:"Ph.D.",name:"Paola Andrea",middleName:null,surname:"Palmeros-Suárez",slug:"paola-andrea-palmeros-suarez",fullName:"Paola Andrea Palmeros-Suárez",position:null,profilePictureURL:"//cdnintech.com/web/frontend/www/assets/author.svg",biography:null,institutionString:null,institution:{name:"University of Guadalajara",country:{name:"Mexico"}}}]}},subseries:{item:{id:"17",type:"subseries",title:"Metabolism",keywords:"Biomolecules Metabolism, Energy Metabolism, Metabolic Pathways, Key Metabolic Enzymes, Metabolic Adaptation",scope:"Metabolism is frequently defined in biochemistry textbooks as the overall process that allows living systems to acquire and use the free energy they need for their vital functions or the chemical processes that occur within a living organism to maintain life.
