Dr. Gülşen Akın Evingür is an associate professor at Pîrî Reis University, Istanbul, Turkey. She completed her BSc at Yildiz Technical University, Istanbul, Turkey, in 1996, and her Ph.D. at Istanbul Technical University in 2011. Her research interests are composites and their optical, electrical, and mechanical properties. She has authored more than 65 journal articles and 200 conference proceedings in national and international journals. She has edited six books, authored seven book chapters, and participated in both national and international projects.

Elasticity is the ability of a material body to return to its original shape and size after the removal of a deforming force. The performance of materials can be defined according to their physical characteristics: stiffness, strength, hardness, ductility, and toughness. The elasticity of materials can be predicted by computational simulations and/or measured in laboratory experiments. This book is divided into two sections: “Simulations and Modeling” and “Characterization”. In particular, seven relevant topics and their applications are considered: theory, simulation, characterization, composites, single crystals, nanoindentation, and dielectric elastomers. Examples are provided of the elasticity of materials including composites, single crystals, auxetics, and dielectric elastomers. The book provides important practical skills and will be useful for postgraduate and higher-level science and engineering students.

Three-dimensional networks can be hydrophilic and/or hygroscopic. Optical, mechanical, and electrical properties of these materials encompass many fields of technology. Composites of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in polymeric materials have attracted considerable attention in the research and industrial communities due to their unique optical, mechanical, and electrical properties. CNT polymer nanocomposites possess high stiffness, high strength, and good electrical conductivity at relatively low concentrations of CNT filler. Here, in this chapter, we survey the optical, mechanical, and electrical mechanisms for various polymeric systems. Composite gels and films were prepared with various molar percentages of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The optical, mechanical, and electrical behaviors of various composite gels doped by MWCNT are also discussed in the each sections of the chapter. The optical behaviors of the composites were performed by the UV-Vis spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy in the first part of the chapter. On the other hand, compressive testing technique and rheological measurements were employed to determine the variations of mechanical properties of the composites in the second part of the chapter. Lastly, we review the electrical properties of the composites improved significantly by addition of MWCNTs researches.
