Psychopathy is the result of the bundle of personality characteristics that typically displays socio-communicative impairment as well as restricted social skills and activities in which neurophysiological impairments are reported. The most prominent feature of psychopathy is that communication failures occur in interpersonal relations due to insincere charm for manipulations, grandiose self-perception, rule-breaking tendencies, irresponsibility and unpredictable impulsive behaviors. Since the individuals with psychopathic traits are very self-centered, they act on their emotional state. Their behaviors are driven by feelings and impulsive wishes. That is why, they are untrustable individuals. They have lots of difficulty and are considered to be dangerous in maintaining long-term relationships, particularly with their intimate partner. It is a critical mistake to assume that psychopathy is caused by the individual’s incomplete individuality. This mistake leads to inability to be eliminated of the problems in not only correctional interventions in forensic settings but also treatment procedures in clinical settings. In this chapter, the characteristics of psychopathy are explained for providing some inspiration in the line of successful treatment procedures and intervention strategies in forensic and clinical settings.

The content of thought, which emerges from the processing of information from the social context lived, is a critical factor that guides whether the behavior is psychopathological or not. In cases where worry, anxiety and fear are dominant in the content of thought, the individual may find himself in some psychopathological processes. Adversity and uncertainty are the main factors that lead to the experience of worry, anxiety and fear which is the last point of these. Uncertainty of information from the social context lived, when matched with adversity, may lead to chaotic situations at the cognitive level, e.g., thought contents such as distortions in thought, severe anxiety and fear. Obsessive compulsive disorder derives from severe worry and anxiety. Although the disorder is classified under anxiety disorders, it is actually a thought distortion disorder. The individual finds himself repeating the strange behavior patterns accompanied by strange thought contents in order to get rid of the severe anxiety and accelerated thought cycle he is exposed to. Ambiguity and uncertainty also may lead to the accelerated thought cycle, ruminations, severe thought distortions, over-generalizations. Ruminations, especially, impair the individual’s ability to think and process emotions gradually. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder will be discussed in terms of ambiguity and uncertainty with the combination of adversity. Positive Psychotherapy, which is one of the latest effective technique in recovery processes of the diseases, will be mentioned.

Aware that criminal behavior undermines a society’s level of well-being, numerous studies on crime prevention, rehabilitation, and intervention have been conducted for many years. As new information about human behavior is discovered, various treatment and intervention techniques are utilized to regulate and cure deviant criminal behaviors. Legal provisions have been put in place to provide criminal sanctions for preventing and correcting crime. Evidence-based studies have been conducted in correctional facilities. This chapter provides theoretical and practical information on the Positive Psychotherapy (PPT) and discusses how it can be adapted to address criminal cases. Positive Psychology is introduced as the foundation for Positive Psychotherapy. Although PPT has been effective in many areas of life, its potential in the criminal justice system has not been explored. The chapter provides a framework for understanding criminal behavior and emphasizes that not all deviant behavior is criminal. Despite its widespread use in clinical and community settings throughout the USA, Europe, and almost all over the world, PPT has not yet been implemented in forensic settings or penal institutions. The implementation of PPT in the field could contribute to the reduction, prevention, and correction of crimes and pave the way for further research in the area.
