Ali Hessami

Ali Hessami is currently the Director of R&D and Innovation at Vega Systems, UK. He is an expert in the systems assurance and safety, security, sustainability and knowledge assessment/management methodologies and has a background in design and development of advanced control systems for safety and mission critical industrial applications. He is a UK expert on CENELEC & IEC systems, hardware & software standards committees. He is a member of WG26 CENELEC Railway Cyber Security Standardisation Working Group and also recently elected as the Technical Editor and the chair for the IEEE P7000, Model Process for Addressing Ethical Concerns During System Design standard. Ali is a Visiting Professor at London City University’s Centre for Systems and Control and at Beijing Jiaotong University. He is a Fellow of Royal Society of Arts (FRSA), Fellow of the Institution of Engineering & Technology (IET) and a Senior Member of IEEE.

Since the advent of steam engines and higher throughput railways during the early nineteenth century, the rate of development has been rather steady and incremental. The development of advanced electronic control and command systems, increasing levels of automation, and electrified high-speed railways over the past few decades have transformed the rail transportation posing it as a competitor to aviation. Modern railways are no longer the sole forte of civil and mechanical engineering and involve a broad multidisciplinary engineering disciplines from advanced computing, telecommunications, and networking to big data analytics and even AI. This volume addresses the diverse, evolving, and advanced engineering disciplines including enabling practices and processes involved in shaping modern railways.
