The main reason of it is that these materials have high yield, ultimate tensile strength, and very good corrosion/oxidation resistance, and they combine these good properties with an excellent creep resistance at elevated temperatures. In spite of their outstanding properties, superalloys can lose their mechanical strength because of wear, tear, and crack formation when they are exposed to high-service temperatures and heavy working conditions. Moreover, corrosion is another important issue for superalloys because the materials of gas turbine engine parts are exposed to harsh engine environments, which consist of many pollutants and hot gases. Therefore, special attention must be given to the corrosion behavior of superalloys. This book provides information on the interaction between the microstructure of alloys and their mechanical properties and also the position of superalloys in the manufacturing industry. Topics cover the minimization of the formation of microsegregation and detrimental phases in the GTA welding of superalloys, oxidation kinetics of nickel-based superalloys used in the manufacture of rings for aircraft engines, a review of the work done over the last two decades to understand the hot corrosion behavior of superalloys used in advanced coal-based power plants, ultrasonic-assisted machining of Inconel 718, dry high-speed turning of Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy, and laser welding in dentistry. The book "Superalloys for Industry Applications" consists of contributions by scientists and engineers who are experienced in the production, design, and analysis of materials from all around the world. We hope that this book will be an irreplaceable source of study for manufacturing, degradation mechanisms, and reliability of superalloys.',isbn:"978-1-78923-539-5",printIsbn:"978-1-78923-538-8",pdfIsbn:"978-1-83881-249-2",doi:"10.5772/65570",price:119,priceEur:129,priceUsd:155,slug:"superalloys-for-industry-applications",numberOfPages:118,isOpenForSubmission:!1,isInWos:null,isInBkci:!1,hash:"4cbaaafeb4958d641b74988e33229020",bookSignature:"Sinem Cevik",publishedDate:"August 1st 2018",coverURL:"https://cdn.intechopen.com/books/images_new/5825.jpg",numberOfDownloads:6150,numberOfWosCitations:2,numberOfCrossrefCitations:3,numberOfCrossrefCitationsByBook:2,numberOfDimensionsCitations:4,numberOfDimensionsCitationsByBook:2,hasAltmetrics:0,numberOfTotalCitations:9,isAvailableForWebshopOrdering:!0,dateEndFirstStepPublish:"September 29th 2016",dateEndSecondStepPublish:"November 18th 2016",dateEndThirdStepPublish:"July 20th 2017",dateEndFourthStepPublish:"August 20th 2017",dateEndFifthStepPublish:"October 20th 2017",currentStepOfPublishingProcess:5,indexedIn:"1,2,3,4,5,6,7",editedByType:"Edited by",kuFlag:!1,featuredMarkup:null,editors:[{id:"117212",title:"MSc.",name:"Sinem",middleName:null,surname:"Cevik",slug:"sinem-cevik",fullName:"Sinem Cevik",profilePictureURL:"https://mts.intechopen.com/storage/users/117212/images/7692_n.jpg",biography:"Dr. Sinem Çevik is currently an assistant professor in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at the Ondokuz Mayis University, Samsun, Turkey. This article deals with the various process control methodologies for minimizing the microsegregation and Laves phase such as the enhanced weld cooling rate in GTA welding (GTAW) process and modification in weld metal chemistry. Even though the high energy density welding processes such as electron beam (EB) and laser beam (LB) welding techniques are proven in minimizing the microsegregation and Laves phase, the requirement of conventional GTA welding process still exists in the aerospace industry due to the complex shapes of the components and the inaccessible conditions for executing the welding process. The enhancement in the weld cooling rate and modified weld metal chemistry resulted in the refined fusion zone microstructure and reduced microsegregation. Enhanced weld efficiency on ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and 0.2% YS at 25°C was observed to the tune of 85 to 93% by employing cryogenic cooling in GTA welding process. Similar improvement in weld efficiency at 650°C was observed. However, the evaluated weld efficiencies with cryogenically cooled weld metal were marginally lower than the previous works in EB and LB welds only by 2–3%.",signatures:"S.G.K. Manikandan, D. Over the last few decades, attention was paid by researchers worldwide to overcome these problems and to design, build, and operate coal-based plants with improving efficiency levels and reducing emission levels. Operating the power plants with higher levels of steam temperature and pressure was adopted as the direction toward achieving the needed improvements. The requirement to operate the plants with increasingly higher levels of temperature and pressure made it necessary to design the components with superalloys. Hot corrosion then becomes a major design consideration, particularly for superheaters and reheaters. Thus, it becomes important to study the hot corrosion behavior of candidate superalloys. However, the machining process, particularly the turning/grinding, of Inconel 718 is still costly due to high cutting force and heavy tool damage. Fortunately, a promising material removal technique, that is, ultrasonic-assisted turning/grinding (called UAT/UAG for simplicity), could potentially play a great role in the high efficiency precision machining of Inconel 718 due to its excellent features such as smaller turning/grinding force, better surface quality, longer tool working life and lower heat generation. However, few attempts have been done on UAT/UAG of Inconel 718. Therefore, in this work, in order to confirm the feasibility of machining Inconel 718 by UAT/UAG, experimental apparatus/equipment has at first been constructed by installing an ultrasonic cutting-unit/spindle on a NC lathe/surface grinder for UAT/UAG operations, and then experimental investigations have been performed to elucidate the fundamental machining characteristics involving Inconel 718 workpiece including the effects of the ultrasonic vibration and the cutting/grinding speed on the work-surface finish, the machining force and temperature, the chip formation, the tool/wheel wears and so on. Early approaches to OBIA performed image segmentation by the classical split and merge approach. Here, a meaningful partition was defined by applying a split process to define a set of elementary (homogeneous) regions that are then merged under certain conditions [1]. The latter may be based on geometric attributes like area, texture attributes like statistical moments of intensity distribution, shape attributes like shape factors, or any of their combinations [2, 3, 4]. On the other hand, more recent approaches to OBIA focus on hierarchical image segmentations that are based on scale-space representation, i.e. a set of image segmentations at different detail levels, in which the segmentation at finer levels are nested with respect to those at coarser levels [1, 5]. Some popular examples of such hierarchies include max-tree [6],
Region merging can be considered from different theoretical aspects. A set merging problem, which has a long history in computing, is the first of them. Hopcroft and Ullman [10] proposed two algorithms based on quadtrees, both working in
In this chapter, a new solution is proposed for a general region merging problem suitable for hierarchical OBIA. The main contributions are a theoretical derivation of the merging function in the raster space, represented by a 4-connected graph, and a proposal of an efficient implementation based on chain codes that ensure compact region representation.
The chapter is structured in five sections. Section 2 introduces the problem and formalises it. Brief implementation hints are given in Section 3. Section 4 presents empirical results, while Section 5 concludes the chapter.
The key terms, needed to present the problem and to derive its formal solution, are defined in this section. Among other concepts, the region, raster space, and region merging are defined, which appeared in the title of this chapter.
Intuitively, a region is a group of connected raster cells (grid cells or pixels). It may be represented either as a collection of the pixels themselves or by its boundary. This second possibility is used in this work. It is based on the concepts of trail and cycle which must, therefore, be introduced first.
Figure 1 shows two cases of connected trails. Trails

Table 3 shows spent CPU time while performing merging from single pixels up to the entire image. A personal computer with a 3,5 GH Intel® Core™ i5–6600 K processor and 32 G bytes of RAM was used in the experiment. The program was implemented in C++ and compiled with C++ Visual Studio 2019 under the Windows 10 operating system. As can be seen, the actual CPU time spent depends on the colour characteristics of the images. The image Lenna has large parts of very similar colours and therefore, the regions grow rapidly which is reflected in the shortest CPU spent time. The image Peppers exposes a similar characteristic. On the other hand, the image Baboon consists of very small homogeneous regions, reflecting in longer CPU time spent.

We implemented the set-based version of the merging operation for comparison. In this case, the region is represented by the STD structure
A new region merging algorithm, suitable for hierarchical object-based image analysis, is proposed in this chapter. The raster space is represented by a 4-connected graph, and a merging function is derived formally upon it. The implementation follows the theoretical investigation strictly. The edges forming the border of the region embedded in the 4-connected graph are represented by the Freeman crack chain code in four directions. The implementation works in two main steps: a determination of the common vertices and edges of the regions being merged, and a walkabout, which realises the theoretically derived merging function. A classification of the obtained region’s edges to those representing the holes and those defining the outer border, may be done at the end.
The algorithm’s worst-case time complexity is
In addition to the methodical implementation of the region merging procedure, the proposed chain code-based approach enables efficient extraction of various essential shape descriptors [3]. The approaches for extracting these descriptors can be divided roughly into the region- and contour-based approaches, and the latter are known as being computationally demanding for traditional hierarchical segmentation and region growing. Namely, they require the boundary to be extracted after each region merging operation. Because of this, these are rarely used, e.g. as stopping criteria during the region growing, or as thresholds for hierarchical cuts. On the other hand, chain codes by themselves allow for efficient description of shapes.

Despite all the honey microorganism barriers, some species of microorganisms are able to survive and may cause damage to honeybees or consumers. Techniques of pathogenic microorganism identification by DNA using PCR are recommended and required for sanitary and customs control. It is important to know the diversity of contaminating microorganisms in honey, especially due to disseminate pathogenic microorganisms in the international traded marketing. In contrast, beneficial microorganisms such as yeasts can remain latently in this product waiting for the moment in which the environment is suitable for their development. Among the beneficial bacteria found in honeybee products, we can mention some lactic acid bacteria that act as prebiotics when ingested. The microorganisms in the digestive tract of honeybees are important for their health. Even if its direct impact on domestic economy and trade varies across countries, at micro-level, beekeeping creates well-being for communities, providing health products for population and decent revenues for farmers. It also supports the sustainability of rural livelihoods. In this context, the research subject is the analysis of production and trade of honey in three European Union Countries—Romania, Italy and Serbia—with a goal to consider the dynamic of supply and trade of honey and deduce potential opportunities for producers. The goal of the study is to draw implication from the results obtained, suggesting the concrete measures to improve the existing situation. Trade data are examined to get a picture of honey sector trends. The bioactive components of honey are affected by the flora from which it is produced and by geographical variations. Phenolic compounds promote, among other activities, high antioxidant action, being capable of minimizing intracellular oxidative damage associated with cellular aging, apoptosis and neurodegenerative diseases. A living cell system would provide a better platform for determining antioxidant activity, since the bioactive honey compounds can act modulating antioxidant defense gene expression. Indeed, phenolic compounds, amino acids and reducing sugars are among the substances responsible for honey antioxidant activity. Most of phenolic compounds also exert antimicrobial activity against a number of pathogens and spoilage microorganisms. The antimicrobial activity of honey is also due to the action of enzymes. In addition, honey was found to contain lactic acid bacteria (LAB), which itself produce a myriad of active compounds that remain in variable amounts in mature honey. In addition, these antioxidant compounds might play a key role as prebiotic, protecting and stimulating growth of probiotic bacteria. Oligosaccharides present in honey are well‐known prebiotic substances stimulating growth, activity and protecting probiotic bacteria during passage through the gastrointestinal tract and during storage of the products. Results of characteristic experiments are presented, obtained during the shearing of crystallized suspension, that is, crystallized honey. An entire set of trade indicators related to honey were computed over the period 2006–2015 and are presented in the chapter: value, amount, growth rate and geographic structure of export and import in the world and in selected countries for which the level of comparative advantages of exported honey was also measured using the Balassa index.",book:{id:"5520",slug:"honey-analysis",title:"Honey Analysis",fullTitle:"Honey Analysis"},signatures:"Cristina Bianca Pocol, Svetlana Ignjatijević and Daniele Cavicchioli",authors:[{id:"190657",title:"Dr.",name:"Svetlana",middleName:null,surname:"Ignjatijević",slug:"svetlana-ignjatijevic",fullName:"Svetlana Ignjatijević"},{id:"192970",title:"Associate Prof.",name:"Cristina Bianca",middleName:null,surname:"Pocol",slug:"cristina-bianca-pocol",fullName:"Cristina Bianca Pocol"},{id:"192971",title:"Dr.",name:"Daniele",middleName:null,surname:"Cavicchioli",slug:"daniele-cavicchioli",fullName:"Daniele Cavicchioli"}]}],onlineFirstChaptersFilter:{topicId:"346",limit:6,offset:0},onlineFirstChaptersCollection:[],onlineFirstChaptersTotal:0},preDownload:{success:null,errors:{}},subscriptionForm:{success:null,errors:{}},aboutIntechopen:{},privacyPolicy:{},peerReviewing:{},howOpenAccessPublishingWithIntechopenWorks:{},sponsorshipBooks:{sponsorshipBooks:[],offset:8,limit:8,total:0},allSeries:{pteSeriesList:[{id:"14",title:"Artificial Intelligence",numberOfPublishedBooks:9,numberOfPublishedChapters:89,numberOfOpenTopics:6,numberOfUpcomingTopics:0,issn:"2633-1403",doi:"10.5772/intechopen.79920",isOpenForSubmission:!0},{id:"7",title:"Biomedical Engineering",numberOfPublishedBooks:12,numberOfPublishedChapters:104,numberOfOpenTopics:3,numberOfUpcomingTopics:0,issn:"2631-5343",doi:"10.5772/intechopen.71985",isOpenForSubmission:!0}],lsSeriesList:[{id:"11",title:"Biochemistry",numberOfPublishedBooks:32,numberOfPublishedChapters:318,numberOfOpenTopics:4,numberOfUpcomingTopics:0,issn:"2632-0983",doi:"10.5772/intechopen.72877",isOpenForSubmission:!0},{id:"25",title:"Environmental Sciences",numberOfPublishedBooks:1,numberOfPublishedChapters:12,numberOfOpenTopics:4,numberOfUpcomingTopics:0,issn:"2754-6713",doi:"10.5772/intechopen.100362",isOpenForSubmission:!0},{id:"10",title:"Physiology",numberOfPublishedBooks:11,numberOfPublishedChapters:141,numberOfOpenTopics:4,numberOfUpcomingTopics:0,issn:"2631-8261",doi:"10.5772/intechopen.72796",isOpenForSubmission:!0}],hsSeriesList:[{id:"3",title:"Dentistry",numberOfPublishedBooks:8,numberOfPublishedChapters:129,numberOfOpenTopics:2,numberOfUpcomingTopics:0,issn:"2631-6218",doi:"10.5772/intechopen.71199",isOpenForSubmission:!0},{id:"6",title:"Infectious Diseases",numberOfPublishedBooks:13,numberOfPublishedChapters:113,numberOfOpenTopics:3,numberOfUpcomingTopics:1,issn:"2631-6188",doi:"10.5772/intechopen.71852",isOpenForSubmission:!0},{id:"13",title:"Veterinary Medicine and Science",numberOfPublishedBooks:11,numberOfPublishedChapters:106,numberOfOpenTopics:3,numberOfUpcomingTopics:0,issn:"2632-0517",doi:"10.5772/intechopen.73681",isOpenForSubmission:!0}],sshSeriesList:[{id:"22",title:"Business, Management and Economics",numberOfPublishedBooks:1,numberOfPublishedChapters:19,numberOfOpenTopics:3,numberOfUpcomingTopics:0,issn:"2753-894X",doi:"10.5772/intechopen.100359",isOpenForSubmission:!0},{id:"23",title:"Education and Human Development",numberOfPublishedBooks:0,numberOfPublishedChapters:5,numberOfOpenTopics:1,numberOfUpcomingTopics:1,issn:null,doi:"10.5772/intechopen.100360",isOpenForSubmission:!0},{id:"24",title:"Sustainable Development",numberOfPublishedBooks:0,numberOfPublishedChapters:15,numberOfOpenTopics:5,numberOfUpcomingTopics:0,issn:null,doi:"10.5772/intechopen.100361",isOpenForSubmission:!0}],testimonialsList:[{id:"6",text:"It is great to work with the IntechOpen to produce a worthwhile collection of research that also becomes a great educational resource and guide for future research endeavors.",author:{id:"259298",name:"Edward",surname:"Narayan",institutionString:null,profilePictureURL:"https://mts.intechopen.com/storage/users/259298/images/system/259298.jpeg",slug:"edward-narayan",institution:{id:"3",name:"University of Queensland",country:{id:null,name:"Australia"}}}},{id:"13",text:"The collaboration with and support of the technical staff of IntechOpen is fantastic. Thus proteomics, an area of research that detects all protein forms expressed in an organism, including splice isoforms and post-translational modifications, is more suitable than genomics for a comprehensive understanding of the biochemical processes that govern life. The most common proteomics applications are currently in the clinical field for the identification, in a variety of biological matrices, of biomarkers for diagnosis and therapeutic intervention of disorders. From the comparison of proteomic profiles of control and disease or different physiological states, which may emerge, changes in protein expression can provide new insights into the roles played by some proteins in human pathologies. Understanding how proteins function and interact with each other is another goal of proteomics that makes this approach even more intriguing. Specialized technology and expertise are required to assess the proteome of any biological sample. Currently, proteomics relies mainly on mass spectrometry (MS) combined with electrophoretic (1 or 2-DE-MS) and/or chromatographic techniques (LC-MS/MS). MS is an excellent tool that has gained popularity in proteomics because of its ability to gather a complex body of information such as cataloging protein expression, identifying protein modification sites, and defining protein interactions. The Proteomics topic aims to attract contributions on all aspects of MS-based proteomics that, by pushing the boundaries of MS capabilities, may address biological problems that have not been resolved yet.",coverUrl:"https://cdn.intechopen.com/series_topics/covers/18.jpg",keywords:"Mono- and Two-Dimensional Gel Electrophoresis (1-and 2-DE), Liquid Chromatography (LC), Mass Spectrometry/Tandem Mass Spectrometry (MS; MS/MS), Proteins"}],annualVolumeBook:{},thematicCollection:[],selectedSeries:{title:"Biochemistry",id:"11"},selectedSubseries:null},seriesLanding:{item:null},libraryRecommendation:{success:null,errors:{},institutions:[]},route:{name:"chapter.detail",path:"/chapters/810",hash:"",query:{},params:{id:"810"},fullPath:"/chapters/810",meta:{},from:{name:null,path:"/",hash:"",query:{},params:{},fullPath:"/",meta:{}}}},function(){var m;(m=document.currentScript||document.scripts[document.scripts.length-1]).parentNode.removeChild(m)}()
