Hiroyuki Kawai, Ph.D., Professor of Kanazawa Institute of Technology, Japan, in Spring 2018. He received the B.Eng. degree in electrical and computer engineering in 1999 from Kanazawa University, Japan, and received the M.Eng. and Ph.D. degrees in the Graduate School of Natural Science and Technology from Kanazawa University, in 2001 and 2004, respectively. From 2004 until 2005, he was a Postdoctoral Scholar at the Information Technology Research Center, Hosei University, Japan. He was an Assistant Professor and an Associate Professor at Kanazawa Institute of Technology from 2005 to 2010 and 2010 to 2018, respectively. From 2013 to 2014, he was a Visiting Scholar at the University of Florida. Dr. Kawai's research focuses on the visual feedback control of robot systems, the robot control with antagonistic bi-articular muscles, and Functional Electrical Stimulation(FES) based human motion control. In particular, he is interested in the passivity based control. He received the IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology Outstanding Paper Award from the IEEE Control Systems Society (CSS) in 2008.
