Dr. Hsueh-Chih Chen, the Distinguished Professor of the Department of Educational Psychology and Counseling, currently is the Dean of College of Education, National Taiwan Normal University, President of Taiwan Education Alliance, and President of Asia-Pacific Association for Teacher Education. For his beloved research topic for over 40 years, humor, Dr. Chen has a holistic perspective on studying humor from behavior approach to neuro-cognitive approach with the techniques of eye-tracking, EEG, fMRI and MEG, in order to achieve a comprehensive understanding for humor. Dr.Chen and his team have investigated the neuro-cognition mechanism, developed humor training courses that can be conducted in school and in workplaces, used humor to enhance students’ creativity and learning performance, and have applied techniques of AI to develop a humor chatbot. Dr. Chen also engages in cross-cultural research for humor; he has translated and co-published humor measurements in traditional Chinese language with international scholars, including the traditional Chinese versions of the PhoPhiKat(45) questionnaire, the Humor Styles Questionnaire, the Comic Styles Marker, and compared the differences of using humor between western and eastern contexts, in order to establish a system of humor process, humor education, and mental health. His research interests focus on humor, creativity and education, and positive psychology, and has almost 300 publications about these topics in international journals, chapters of books, conferences, and monographs.
