Hamidul Huq

Dr. Hamidul Huq is Professor and Director of Institute of Development Studies and Sustainability (IDSS), and Dean, School of Humanities and Social Sciences at United International University (UIU), Bangladesh. www.uiu.ac.bd. Sustainable Development is his area of interest in teaching and research. His specialization is in the areas of sustainable livelihoods, integrated coastal zone management, integrated water resources management, disaster management, ecosystem services and poverty alleviation and Interdisciplinary Research and Education. Dr. Huq has 25 years of working experience in NGO sector of Bangladesh before he joined university in 2007. Hamidul Huq founded Unnayan Shahojogy Team (UST) in June 1986 with a commitment to work with the rural disadvantaged people towards their empowerment, poverty alleviation, and sustainable livelihoods. UST’s working approach is rooted in Dr. Y.C. James Yen’s Four-Fold Rural Reconstruction Philosophy, Gandhism, Mujism. He led the UST for 16 years (1986-2002) and then went on voluntary retirement handing over the leadership to the second liner (www.ustbd.org). Dr. Huq has a Masters with Honours in Social Welfare from University of Dhaka, and a PhD in Rural Development Sociology from Wageningen University, the Netherlands. He worked as postdoctoral researcher of UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education, Delft, the Netherlands in the field of IWRM. He has a good number of national and international publications. He is the author of the book People’s Practices: Exploring contestation, counter-development, and rural livelihoods (2001).
