Autonomous University of Yucatán Mexico

Guadalupe Ayora-Talavera is a Professor of Virology at the Universidad Autonoma de Yucatán, Mexico. She obtained a master’s degree in Virology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, UK, in 1998 and a Ph.D. from Reading University, UK, in 2008. She has had a long-standing career studying influenza viruses, from describing for the first time in Mexico the epidemiology of the disease to studying viral factors associated with host-range restriction and pathogenicity. The virology laboratory under her leadership played a fundamental role during the influenza H1N1 pandemic in 2009 and the recent COVID-19 pandemic at both the regional and national levels. In recent years, Dr. Ayora-Talavera has supported the private industry for vaccine development against avian influenza using reverse genetics and has made important contributions to studying the antiviral activity of natural products from the native flora in Yucatán. Apart from her influence on the early career of many graduate and postgraduate students, she also has an extensive record of scientific publications.
