IntechOpen was founded by scientists, for scientists, in order to make book publishing accessible around the globe. Over the last two decades, this has driven Open Access (OA) book publishing whilst levelling the playing field for global academics. Through our innovative publishing model and the support of the research community, we have now published over 5,700 Open Access books and are visited online by over three million academics every month. These researchers are increasingly working in broad technology-based subjects, driving multidisciplinary academic endeavours into human health, environment, and technology.
\\n\\nBy listening to our community, and in order to serve these rapidly growing areas which lie at the core of IntechOpen's expertise, we are launching a portfolio of Open Science journals:
\\n\\nAll three journals will publish under an Open Access model and embrace Open Science policies to help support the changing needs of academics in these fast-moving research areas. There will be direct links to preprint servers and data repositories, allowing full reproducibility and rapid dissemination of published papers to help accelerate the pace of research. Each journal has renowned Editors in Chief who will work alongside a global Editorial Board, delivering robust single-blind peer review. Supported by our internal editorial teams, this will ensure our authors will receive a quick, user-friendly, and personalised publishing experience.
\\n\\n"By launching our journals portfolio we are introducing new, dedicated homes for interdisciplinary technology-focused researchers to publish their work, whilst embracing Open Science and creating a unique global home for academics to disseminate their work. We are taking a leap toward Open Science continuing and expanding our fundamental commitment to openly sharing scientific research across the world, making it available for the benefit of all." Dr. Sara Uhac, IntechOpen CEO
\\n\\n"Our aim is to promote and create better science for a better world by increasing access to information and the latest scientific developments to all scientists, innovators, entrepreneurs and students and give them the opportunity to learn, observe and contribute to knowledge creation. Open Science promotes a swifter path from research to innovation to produce new products and services." Alex Lazinica, IntechOpen founder
\\n\\nIn conclusion, Natalia Reinic Babic, Head of Journal Publishing and Open Science at IntechOpen adds:
\\n\\n“On behalf of the journal team I’d like to thank all our Editors in Chief, Editorial Boards, internal supporting teams, and our scientific community for their continuous support in making this portfolio a reality - we couldn’t have done it without you! With your support in place, we are confident these journals will become as impactful and successful as our book publishing program and bring us closer to a more open (science) future.”
\\n\\nWe invite you to visit the journals homepage and learn more about the journal’s Editorial Boards, scope and vision as all three journals are now open for submissions.

Thiazoles are five-membered heterocyclic compounds containing nitrogen and sulfur atoms with isothiazole isomer. Thiazoles are a basic scaffold found in many natural compounds as vitamin B1-thiamine, alkaloids, anabolic steroids, flavones [1].
The interest in the synthesis of compounds containing the thiazole moiety has been increasing steadily in view of their utility in the field of photosensitizers, rubber vulcanization [2], liquid crystals [3, 4], sensors [5], sunscreens [6], catalysts [7], dyes [8], pigments [1], and chromophores [9, 10]. Moreover, thiazoles occupy a prominent place in current medicinal chemistry due to their wide range of applications in the field of drug design and discovery [11]. They appear in the bacitracin, penicillin antibiotics [12], and various synthetic drugs as short-acting sulfa drug sulfathiazole [1]. Also, they are used as an antidepressant drug (pramipexole) [13], antiulcer agent (nizatidine) [14], anti-inflammatory drug (meloxicam) [15], HIV/AIDS drug (ritonavir) [16], and cancer treatment drug (tiazofurin) [17]. In fact, thiazole is a more common component of FDA-approved pharmaceuticals than related five-membered heterocycles such as isothiazole, thiophene, furan, isoxazole, and oxazole. On the other hand, the metal complexes of thiazole are widely used in photocatalysis [18]. 1,3-Thiazoles undergo different types of reactions to yield various biologically active fused heterocyclic moieties as thiazolopyrimidine, imidazothiazoles, thiazolopyridine, etc. [19, 20, 21].
Thiazole ring system were easily synthesized by well-known methods of Hantzsch [22], Cook-Heilbron [23], and Gabriel [24]. A number of compounds may serve as nucleophilic reagent in this reaction, such as thioamides, thiourea, ammonium thiocarbamate or dithiocarbamate, and their derivatives. Hantzsch synthesized the simple thiazole nucleus in 1887 [25]. This synthesis approach involves cyclization and condensation of haloketones with thioamide, and it is considered the most widely popular process for the synthesis of thiazole moiety. In contrast, Gabriel synthesized thiazoles by treating α-acylaminoketones with stoichiometric amounts of P2S5 or Lawesson’s reagent [26]. Also, Cook-Heilbron used versatile methods for the synthesis of substituted aminothiazoles involving the reaction of α-aminonitriles with dithioacids or esters, carbon disulfide, carbonyl sulfide, and isothiocyanates under mild conditions [27].
Lately, thiazole derivatives were synthesized in the presence of various catalysts [28, 29, 30, 31] and with the use of a microwave irradiation technique [32].
Thioamides and various α-halocarbonyl compounds were reacted to give numerous thiazoles with alkyl, aryl, arylalkyl, or heteroaryl of several functional groups at position 2, 4, or 5 (
Synthesis of 2-, 4-, 5-trisubstituted thiazole.
This class of synthesis gives 5-aminothiazole with different substituted in position 2 by interacting aminonitrile with salts and esters of dithioacids carbon oxysulfide, carbon disulfide, and isothiocyanates significantly [38, 39, 40].
The salts or the esters of both dithioformic and dithiophenacetic acids were reacted with α-aminonitriles to give 5-aminothiazoles (

This reaction was originally designated by Gabriel in 1910. The reaction of phosphorus pentasulfide with acylaminoketone gave 2-phenyl-5-alkyl-thiazole in good yield (

The synthesis of thiazole derivatives involves vigorous reaction conditions and wastage of solvents and catalysts. To overcome these shortcomings, eco-friendly methods as microwave irradiation technique are commonly used for synthesis of thiazole derivatives [45]. Rapid and elegant synthesis of a series of thiazoles (

Water is economically viable, nontoxic, and the most friendly reaction medium available, making it an environmentally acceptable solvent for the design and development of green chemistry technique. Thiazole and its derivatives are among the most active classes of compounds that are known for their broad spectrum of activity, e.g., antibacterial [53], antifungal [54], antimalarial [55], antitubercular [56], antiviral [57], anti-inflammatory [58], antidiabetic [59], anthelmintic [60], anticonvulsant [61], antioxidant [62], anticancer [63], and cardiovascular activities [64], and known as new inhibitors of bacterial DNA gyrase B [65]. Some drugs that already are on the market including the recent entry dasatinib possess thiazoles nucleus [66].
Compounds containing thiazole have marked their presence in a number of clinically available anticancer drugs such as tiazofurin [67], dasatinib [68], dabrafenib [69], patellamide A [70], ixabepilone [71], and epothilone [72].

Thiazole moieties have occupied a pivotal position in the modern organic and medicinal chemistry due to its broad-spectrum pharmacological and medicinal activities such as antimicrobial, anticancer, and antioxidant. The presence of thiazole ring in many drugs such as penicillin, pramipexole, tiazofurin, meloxicam, and nizatidine motivates the chemists to design new thiazole scaffolds. Thiazole nucleus exhibited an important role in finding new leads and drugs for various diseases. This chapter has illustrated the commonly used approaches to synthesize subsisted thiazole derivatives, described their key electronic properties, and highlighted their most important chemical reactivity. A particular focus has been on the use of thiazole in dyes and their metal complexes and miscellaneous applications of thiazole dyes. Also we have focused our attention on the biological application of thiazole derivatives.
The 3-PG-Model, discussed in Part I, is a simple model of implicit gradient elasticity based on Laplacians of stress and strain and has been introduced by Gutkin and Aifantis [1]. It can be derived as a particular case of micromorphic (microstrain) elasticity (see, e. g., Forest and Sievert [2]), so that a free energy function and required boundary conditions are formulated rigorously. In the present paper, we are looking for near-tip asymptotic field solutions for Mode-I and Mode-II crack problems, in the context of plane strain states. The asymptotic solutions are obtained by using expansions of Williams’ type (see Williams [3]).
For the assumptions made in Part I, it is found that both, conventional stress and conventional strain, are singular. This holds also for the nonconventional stress, the so-called double stress. All singular fields have an order of singularity
There are various works addressing singularities in the field variables. Among others, we mention for couple-stress elasticity the works of Muki and Sternberg [4], Sternberg and Muki [5], Bogy and Sternberg [6, 7], Xia and Hutchinson [8], Huang et al. [9, 10, 11] and Zhang et al. [12]. For micropolar elasticity the works of Paul and Sridharan [13], Chen et al. [14], Diegele et al. [15] and for gradient elasticity the works of Altan and Aifantis [16, 17], Ru and Aifantis [18], Unger and Aifantis [19, 20, 21], Chen et al. [22], Mousavi and Lazar [23], Shi et al. [24, 25], Vardoulakis et al. [26], Karlis et al. [27, 28], Georgiadis [29], Askes and Aifantis [30] and Gutkin and Aifantis [1] are to be mentioned. The latter is an interesting work and proves that use of the 3-PG-Model eliminates singularities from the”elastic stresses of defects” (see also Askes and Aifantis [30] as well as Aifantis [31]). This finding is in contrast to the conclusions of the present paper, but it should be emphasized that the form of the assumed boundary conditions in Gutkin and Aifantis [1] is different from the form assumed here.
The scope of the paper is organized as follows: Mode-I and Mode-II crack problems are considered in the setting of plane strain problems. For the 3-PG-Model, the reduced governing equations for plane strain states have been derived in Part I and are summarized in Section 2. Section 3 provides asymptotic solutions for the near-tip fields by starting from asymptotic expansions of the macrodisplacement and the microdeformation. An alternative and equivalent aproach, starting from asymptotic expansions of the stresses, is sketched in Section 4. The developed asymptotic solutions are summarized and discussed in Section 5. Finally, the paper closes with some conclusions in Section 6.
Throughout the paper, use is made of the notation introduced in Part I.
Following equations of Part I will be employed to establish asymptotic solutions of the crack tip fields.

It is of interest to comment the following issue. Obviously not all constants of integration may be determined, because boundary conditions are prescribed only on the crack faces. Nevertheless, it is remarkable that the solutions of Mode-I include only one unknown constant, whereas the solutions of Mode-II depend on two unknown constants. We shall come back to this specific feature in the next section as well as in Section 5, while discussing the asymptotic solutions of the double stresses.

As suggested in Section 3.5, it is common to represent the leading terms of the asymptotic expansion of stresses by introducing stress intensity factors and angular functions. For the Cauchy stress, this is indicated in Eq. (108). Eqs. (108)–(110) also reveal that

Some comments addressing Mode-I and Mode-II crack problems are in order at this stage. In classical elasticity, there are two intensity factors in the expansion of the Cauchy stress, one for each mode. In micropolar elasticity (see, e. g., Diegele et al. [15]), there are also two stress intensity factors in the expansion of the Cauchy stress and in addition two nonclassical intensity factors in the expansion of the couple stress, one for each mode. In the present case of microstrain elasticity, there are also two stress intensity factors in the expansion of the Cauchy stress, one for each mode. However, in the expansions of the double stress there is one intensity factor for Mode-I, but there are two intensity factors for Mode-II. Actually, there are no further conditions to relate
It is also convenient to replace the constants

Table 1 summarizes the first two terms of the asymptotic solutions of the near-tip fields. All stresses are singular with order of singularity
Analytical solutions of the fields.
Closed form analytical solutions, predicted by the 3-PG-Model for Mode-I and Mode-II crack problems, have been developed in the present paper. The solutions are based on asymptotic expansions of Williams’ type of the near-tip fields. The main conclusions, which can be drawn on the basis of the preceding developements, can be briefly stated as follows.
The first two terms in the asymptotic expansion of the components of the Cauchy stress are identical to the ones of classical elasticity. In particular, the Cauchy stress is singular with order of singularity
This is in contrast to statements in other works, which rely upon boundary conditions different from the ones adopted here.
There are, however, significant differences in comparison to classical elasticity, in what concerns the components of macrostrain and macrodisplacement.
There are also significant qualitative differences in comparison to micropolar elasticity concerning the nonclassical stresses.
For instance, the leading terms of the double stress of Mode-II problems include two different stress intensity factors. This is a remarkable feature of the 3-PG-Model.

In order to make the present work self-contained, we sketch briefly how to ascertain the solutions (107)–(111) from Eqs. (95)–(102). We start with the system of differential Eqs. (95)–(97), which can be proved to posses the solutions

Oceanographic tsunami theory is summarized, both for the fundamental equations of motion and in the ray optics and Green's Law approximations; the latter can be applied when water depths are slowly varying. Observations of the current velocities caused by the 2011 Japan tsunami off the Japanese, the US West, and Chilean coasts are described and examples are shown. These observations led to the development of an empirical tsunami detection method, which is outlined. Examples of offline tsunami detections are given and detection times are compared with arrival times at neighboring tide gauges. We describe the observation and offline detection of the June 2013 meteotsunami off the New Jersey coast using coastal radar systems and tide gauges. Methods to model and simulate tsunami velocities are described and videos of the resulting velocity/height maps are given. We describe preliminary methods for evaluating the suitability of radar sites for tsunami detection using simulated tsunami velocities. First, several characteristics of tsunami generation due to a landslide, or a sector collapse, are studied, with the tsunamis simulated numerically, to represent their generation through an interaction between falling bodies, and seawater, in two vertical dimensions. The falling body is assumed to be a fluid, or a rigid body, which moves down a slope with a constant gradient. Second, the mechanism of tsunami generation caused by a submarine volcanic eruption, is discussed, focusing on a phreatomagmatic explosion, where after exposure to high temperature magma, seawater evaporates instantly, with an explosive increase in its volume. An index for submarine volcanic explosive force, concerning tsunami generation, has been developed, by assuming the relationship between a phreatomagmatic explosion, and the resultant initial tsunami waveform. A numerical simulation was also generated, with a specific value for this index, for the propagation of tsunamis due to a submarine volcanic eruption in Kagoshima Bay, where a submarine explosion, leading to tsunami generation, has been observed.",book:{id:"5316",slug:"tsunami",title:"Tsunami",fullTitle:"Tsunami"},signatures:"Taro Kakinuma",authors:[{id:"183830",title:"Dr.",name:"Taro",middleName:null,surname:"Kakinuma",slug:"taro-kakinuma",fullName:"Taro Kakinuma"}]},{id:"64194",doi:"10.5772/intechopen.80037",title:"Geo-Statistical Assessment of the Intensity, Duration, Frequency and Trend of Drought over Gangetic West Bengal, Eastern India",slug:"geo-statistical-assessment-of-the-intensity-duration-frequency-and-trend-of-drought-over-gangetic-we",totalDownloads:1543,totalCrossrefCites:3,totalDimensionsCites:4,abstract:"This chapter presents spatio-temporal (1901–2002) appraisal of the intensity, duration, frequency and trend of drought over Gangetic West Bengal (GWB), Eastern India using standardized precipitation index (SPI). The study reveals that, after 1950s the magnitude of deficit precipitation has increased substantially. Stepping up of the mean intensity of most intense drought events; average drought duration; severe and extreme drought frequency in this agricultural tract at the latter half of the twentieth century are also some alarming events. The western degraded plateau is more sensitive to extreme droughts but, the impact is expected to be rigorous over the adjacent areas. In an nutshell this work provides the evidences demonstrating the intensification of aridity in the northern Rarh plain and moribund delta which may corresponds to degradation and lowering of water resources especially ground water which may also lead to increase of socio-economic vulnerability to drought. This study gives an in depth review on the different variations of the Mann-Kendall (M-K) trend test and how they can be applied, regression techniques (Simple and Multiple), the Angstrom-Prescott model for solar radiation, etc. The study then goes ahead to apply some of them with data obtained from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), and applying tools like the python programming language and Wolfram Mathematica. Results show that the maximum ambient temperature for Calabar is increasing (Z = 2.52) significantly after the calculated p-value <0.05 (significant level). The seasonal M-K test was also applied for the dry and wet seasons and both were found to be increasing (Z = 3.23 and Z = 4.04 respectively) after their calculated p-values <0.05. The relationship between refractivity and other meteorological parameters relating to it was discerned using partial differential equations giving the gradient of each with refractivity; this was compared with results from the correlation matrix to show that the water vapor contents of the atmosphere contributes significantly to the variation of refractivity. Multiple linear regression has also been adopted to give an accurate model for the prediction of refractivity in the region after the residual error between the calculated refractivity and predicted refractivity was minimal.",book:{id:"8485",slug:"weather-forecasting",title:"Weather Forecasting",fullTitle:"Weather Forecasting"},signatures:"Emmanuel P. The Northwest Pacific plays a major role in regulating interdecadal and long-term changes in climate. China experiences the largest number of typhoon landfalls and the most destructive power affected by typhoons in the world. The hidden dangers of typhoon disasters are accelerating with the acceleration of urbanization, the rapid development of economic construction and global warming. The coastal cities are the most dynamic and affluent areas of China’s economic development. They are the strong magnetic field that attracts international capital in China, and are also the most densely populated areas and important port groups in China. Although these regions are highly developed, they are vulnerable to disasters. An attractive application for carbon dioxide is the synthesis of chemicals, especially for producing styrene by ethylbenzene dehydrogenation, in which it increases the catalyst activity and selectivity. In order to find efficient catalysts for the reaction, the effect of cerium, chromium, aluminum, and lanthanum on the properties of zirconia‐supported iron oxides was studied in this work. The modified supports were prepared by precipitation and impregnated with iron nitrate. The obtained catalysts were characterized by thermogravimetry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction, specific surface area measurement, and temperature‐programmed reduction. The catalysts showed different textural and catalytic properties, which were associated to the different phases in the solids, such as monoclinic or tetragonal zirconia, hematite, maghemite, cubic ceria, monoclinic or hexagonal lantana, and rhombohedral chromia, the active phases in ethylbenzene dehydrogenation. This will ensure that we discover ways to live in our world that allows us and other beings to flourish. We can no longer rely on medicalized approaches to health that wait for people to become ill before attempting to treat them. We need to live in harmony with nature and rediscover the beauty and balance in our everyday lives and surroundings, which contribute to our well-being and that of all other creatures on the planet. This topic will provide insights and knowledge into how to achieve this change in health care that is based on ecologically sustainable practices.
