The genetic algorithm (GA) as an optimization method has been applied based on free form deformation (FFD) technique to improve the performance of our proposed technique. In the formulation of the considered problem, the profiles of the considered objects are determined by FFD technique, where the FFD control point positions are treated as genes, and then the chromosome profiles are defined with the gene sequence. The population is established by a number of individuals (chromosomes), where the objective functions of individuals are achieved by the boundary element method (BEM). A nonuniform rational B-spline curve (NURBS) was used to model optimized boundary where it reduces the number of control points and provides the flexibility to design several different shapes for solving the considered photo-thermoelastic wave problems. Intelligent environments will be one of the major applications used to process natural language. The methods for speaker’s gender classification can adapt and improve the performance of natural language processing applications. That is why, this chapter will present an effective speaker’s pitch value detection in noisy environments, which then allows more robust speaker’s gender classification. The chapter presents the algorithm for the speaker’s pitch value detection and performs the comparison in various noisy environments. The experiments are carried out on the part of the publically available Aurora 2 speech database. The results showed that the automatically determined pitch values deviate, on average, only by 8.39 Hz from the reference pitch value. A well-defined pitch value allows a functional speaker’s gender classification. In this chapter, presented speaker’s gender classification works well, even at low signal to noise ratios. The experiments show that the speaker’s gender classification performance at SNR 0 dB is higher than 91% when the automatically determined pitch value is used. Highly inflectional languages are hard to process, especially as target languages. As statistical machine translation has almost reached the limits of its capacity, neural machine translation is becoming the technology of the future. This chapter also describes the evaluation of machine translation quality. It covers manual and automatic evaluations. Traditional and recently proposed metrics for automatic machine translation evaluation are described. Human translation still provides the best translation quality, but it is, in general, time-consuming and expensive. Integration of human and machine translation is a promising workflow for the future. An issue of concern has however been that although currently there are several technologically feasible alternatives for promoting energy efficiency, the adoption rates of these measures have generally been low and hence the proposition that there exists an "energy efficiency gap".
\r\n\r\n\tThis book aims to illuminate the importance of energy efficiency in energy policy and to explain issues such as the existence and magnitude of the energy efficiency potential; the multiple benefits of energy efficiency; the technological, socio-economic, and institutional barriers to the implementation of energy efficiency programs; international trade in energy efficiency; and, the policies that can accelerate the uptake of energy efficiency programs. A major strength of the book is that its arguments are anchored in empirical data and are illustrated through case studies drawn from the entire globe and span all energy end-use sectors.

Using a shape memory alloy (SMA), a material that undergoes large changes in stress during a temperature cycle due to a solid-solid phase change can be used to generate large, nonlinear deflections. We aim to find a relationship between deflections of a SMA MEMS actuator, and maximize the deflection of SMA MEMS bimorph. Shape memory alloy films based on sputtered NiTi have been exhaustively characterized in previous decades, leading to a wealth of information about the intricate interplay between Ni/Ti ratio, annealing temperatures and times, and thickness [8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31]. Bimorphic actuators can impart reversible deflection shape memory microactuators as previously demonstrated [32, 33].
To date, optimization of parameters for improving shape memory-induced actuation has not been explored. We chose for our candidate system an SU-8 patterned on top of NiTi SMA bimorph actuator. In this case, residual strains develop during the processing of MEMS actuators, and upon release from substrate, the device curls upward to relieve these strains. Thermal input converts the material into austenite, and shape memory effect drives the actuator into a more flat position, a process that is reversible upon subsequent thermal cycles. Thermal effects can be delivered to the SMA MEMS using laser irradiation [34], and joule-heating [35], at frequencies up to at least 1 kHz. SU-8 is an ideal material due to its relative ease of use in MEMS, low modulus of elasticity enables more flexible devices with large deflection, and good chemical stability.
Much literature exists for thin film development and characterization of nickel-titanium shape memory alloy [1, 2, 3, 4]. Although many demonstrations of SMA MEMS actuators have been shown [9, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43], none of these citations perform design optimization studies to maximize deflection or curvature radius due to residual stress changes due to phase change. When the nitinol is thermally cycled between martensite and austenite phases, there is a corresponding change in residual stress, which is used to drive the nonlinear deflections. This nonlinear and large change in stress is defined as the recovery stress, and is a principal factor influencing the deflection and curvature radius. Our novel contributions take a realistic SMA MEMS bimorph design based on SU-8 on NiTi, and determine optimal thickness combinations to yield maximized deflections, which would be desirable in certain applications were large strokes are desired. We feed into the model the Young’s modulus values for NiTi thin films that have been determined previously using nanoindentation techniques [44, 45].
The nickel-titanium alloy (NiTi) would be co-sputtered onto a 4″ silicon wafer based on the methods reported in previous works [8, 34, 35, 36]. The substrate is rotated and heated during deposition to ensure crystallization of the film. The wafer stress vs. temperature measurements are performed, using Stoney’s equation to determine recovery stress, hysteresis, and residual stress in the NiTi film. After verification of good shape memory alloy properties in the film at wafer level, a photomask is used to pattern bimorph actuator. Ion milling is used to remove portions of the NiTi film on the wafer. The SU-8 2000.5 is spin coated (where the RPM is used to control SU-8 thickness) and another mask plate is used to pattern SU-8 on top of the NiTi cantilever. Finally, the device is released by etching the Si substrate away in xenon difluoride (XeF2) gas. In practice, SU-8 thickness would be controlled by varying spin speed, and NiTi thickness based on sputtering time.
The design problem is to maximize the deflection of a MEMS bimorph cantilever beam based on the nonlinear shape memory alloy (SMA) as the actuating mechanism. The deflection is dependent in large part on the parameter called recovery stress. The larger the recovery stress, the larger the deflection. We may also wish to decrease the overall mass or volume of the actuator, of minimize the curvature radius. The objectives are competing in that reduction in the shape memory alloy thickness, generally leads to reduction of the recovery stress. The bimorph actuator could consist of SU-8 on top of NiTi thin film, but this optimization model would be easily extensible to other cases of interest.
We should consider that the equation describing the recovery stress-induced deflection in shape memory alloy MEMS actuator is (Eq. 1).
Initially, the contour plots of SU-8 and NiTi thickness showed that the optimization problem was not interesting for the simplest case of constant recovery stress over the range of NiTi thickness. To our advantage, the NiTi recovery stress is a parameter that depends on NiTi thickness, which makes the optimization problem more interesting. Figure 1 shows stress vs. temperature curves for NiTi on Si wafer. These curves are experimentally generated, and indicate the recovery stress (difference between highest and lowest stress values), and the thermal hysteresis. Here, as an illustrative example, the NiTi thickness is 900 nm, and the temperature cycle is performed using a heating and cooling rate of 1°C/min.

Assumptions: we assume operating temperatures go between RT and 100°C to ensure full phase change. In all calculations, for simplicity we use Young’s modulus of NiTi as a fixed value. In reality, the Young’s modulus changes curing the phase change. Martensite (lower temperature phase usually has a lower elastic modulus compared to the higher temperature austenite phase).
Figure 2 shows the process used to build the SMA MEMS bimorph actuator comprised of the NiTi shape memory (SMA) layer underneath the SU-8 elastic layer. In step (a) deposition of SMA onto Si wafer and pattern using photolithography. In step (b) ion milling is performed to transfer the pattern into the SMA layer. In step (c) we spin on SU-8 and pattern it with mask plate and photolithography. In step (d) we release the MEMS bimorph by etching Si substrate with xenon difluoride (XeF2) gas. In step (e) we thermally actuate the two-way shape memory MEMS device between curled and flat states.

Regarding NiTi recovery stress, there would appear to be an optimal thickness range for which recovery stress reaches max values as depicted in Figure 3, below which there is a sharp drop off. Therefore the tendency for increased deflections for thinner materials reaches a point of diminishing returns due to the effect of decreasing recovery stress. Below 100–150 nm, shape memory properties have been shown to drop off completely, so we impose constraints for NiTi thickness to vary between 150 and 1300 nm.

The curvature of a bilayer elastic material [46] is given as

Δε is a strain differential term resulting from CTE mismatch and temperature difference experienced during the processing. θ is a correction factor used in the placement of neutral plane. E′ is the biaxial modulus defined as E/(1 − v) where v is Poisson ratio and E is Young’s modulus. Poisson ratios are assumed to be 0.22 for SU-8 and 0.33 for NiTi. α_SU-8 is reported to be 52 × 10–6/°C. α_NiTi (depending on austenite or martensite phase) is reported to be 6.6 or 11 × 10–6/°C. For simplicity sake, we assume an intermediate value of α_NiTi = 9 × 10–6/°C. Units for theta term is nm or m. Units for G term is Pa × nm3 or Pa × m3. Therefore units for curvature is in nm or m. Δε term is unit less.
The objective number 2 is to maximize curvature radius. We determine the pareto frontier and strong pareto points using the epsilon constrained method. In this epsilon constrained method, we minimize f1 while keeping f2 less than or equal to different values of epsilon. As a first step for objective function 2 (curvature of bimorph) we coded MATLAB script to generate contour plots as a function of the two main design variables (i.e., thickness of NiTi and SU-8). The problem formulation for objective function 2 is as follows (and contour plot is shown in Figure 5).

The result is intuitive because this is the stiffest beam (from the perspective of thickest NiTi with much larger Young’s modulus compared to SU-8). Thinner SU-8 means the effect from strain differential and CTE mismatch is minimized and contributes less to curvature radius. Overall, this means that upper bound on NiTi thickness and lower bound on SU-8 thickness are active constraints for objective function 2.

Due to the conflicting nature of the two objective functions, the contour plot for the multi-objective function has changed substantially. Maximizing the radius is favored by a larger tNiTi as opposed to a smaller thickness required to maximize deflection. The optimal solution of multi-objective function as shown in Figure 6 has a larger tNiTi.

Once we have established the optimal objective values for deflection and curvature, we perform a sensitivity analysis regarding the following variables, for which experimentally could be varied with relative ease. These thickness values x1 and x2, corresponding the NiTi and SU-8 thicknesses, can be changed by varying the spin speed for SU-8 coating: faster spins corresponding to thinner films of SU-8 and vice versa. For NiTi, longer sputter time would be used for thicker films and vice versa. Young’s modulus can be varied by deposition conditions for NiTi and curing/baking temperatures and conditions for SU-8. To perform the sensitivity analysis for Objective 1, we keep fixed the optimal thickness for SU-8 and vary the NiTi thickness to see how it changes, and plot a function (as shown in Figure 7) and generate a table of values. Similarly, we keep fixed the optimal value of NiTi thickness and recovery stress, and plot the deflection over a range of SU-8 thicknesses.

In conclusion, an interesting optimization problem was identified whereby the deflection of shape memory MEMS bimorph actuator was maximized. Original calculations showed that reductions in the thickness of the bimorph layers would yield maximized deflections (for the simplest case assuming constant values of recovery stress in NiTi layer). In the literature, a more complex relationship among recovery stress and the NiTi thickness was identified. A curve fit to this data yielded a much more interesting optimization problem, which was solved graphically (contour plots) and using the Optimization Toolbox in MATLAB. Optimal NiTi and SU-8 thickness were determined to be for the case where SU-8 modulus was 2 GPa to be tNiTi = 359 nm, tSU-8 = 824 nm. After solving the single-objective optimization problem using fmincon, Excel solver, and a hand-coded algorithm, we formulated a second objective function to maximize curvature radius (i.e., to maximize the flatness of the beam because larger curvature radius is a flatter beam). We used fmincon to solve for the optimal values of NiTi and SU-8 to maximize the curvature radius. We determined that the objective functions were conflicting (i.e., there was clearly a tradeoff in order to satisfy both conditions simultaneously), and therefore suitable for multi-objective optimization. We formulated a multi-objective optimization method and solved it using fmincon. Finally, a parametric study or sensitivity analysis was performed pertaining to NiTi and SU-8 Young’s modulus. The purpose of this review is to compare the genetics and histopathology of bovine marbling and human muscular dystrophy. Surprisingly, in spite of similarities, the literature suggests that marbling is a function of extreme adipogenesis whereas dystrophy is a consequence of fundamental defects in muscle itself. In fact, completely independent studies, as summarized here, reveal that similar genes have been implicated in some selected situations. Further, it is clear that the histopathology of some forms of dystrophy can resemble some forms of bovine marbling.
\nMarbling is the term used to describe the presence of macroscopically visible fat within muscle (Figures 1 and 2). Coarse marbling refers to white areas of fat through and around muscle bundles, generally as continuous bands arising from the subcutaneous adipose tissue. By contrast, fine or “snowflake” marbling is characterized by more even white flecks resulting in pink rather than red muscle.

Accordingly, there is copious funding and now a substantial understanding of the environmental and genetic factors which favor fine rather than coarse.
\nInterspecies translation from cattle to man has unrecognized potential. Firstly, cattle are close to humans in evolutionary time and fall within that window of 50–100 million years of separation (or last common ancestor) which is characterized by very similar proteins but vastly different regulations of expression. The same window may explain the fact that the two species have synergized over some 40,000 years of contact and at least 7000 years of domestication. As one example, infections can be similar and, in some cases, are transmissible from one to the other, but close exposure to cattle is generally innocuous implying some form of immunity. As for example in the case of pox and tuberculosis. We argue that cattle are both relevant and relatively safe for translational studies.
\nSecondly, domestic cattle are well maintained, closely observed, and very well understood. There are huge databases and DNA banks which have been in existence for 50 years. Innumerable breeds can be compared often under different environmental conditions. Many of these breeds have been closed for hundreds of years and then intentionally crossed with each other. There is great potential for meaningful studies of population genetics and family and haplotype associations and, even more so, for structure-function genomics. Metabolic and inflammatory pathways are relatively well understood and are supported by inestimable funding available to ensure future supplies of meat, milk, cheese, butter, leather, and fertilizer.
\nThirdly, cattle are plentiful and even more so than humans. Because the generation time and life expectancy are much shorter, there are excellent opportunities to study and treat genetically determined diseases prospectively [2].
\nWhite muscle disease or selenium/vitamin E deficiency occurs quite commonly in livestock raised on leached soils. The pathology resembles dystrophy in some respects. A mutation in the selenoprotein N gene (SEPN1) is responsible for some types of congenital muscular dystrophies and myopathies [3]. Kakulas [4] demonstrated that dystrophy-like changes explained the weakness observed in quokkas on Rottnest Island. Importantly, the condition could be corrected by treating the deficiency raising the possibility that human dystrophies could be reversible if the basic defect could be corrected.
\nThe term genome is used here to refer to the architecture of DNA sequences, whereas others have come to use the term in the context of single-nucleotide polymorphisms wherever they occur. The difference is fundamental to the discovery of gene clusters with coherent cis and trans interactions between conserved sequences known as ancestral haplotypes [5, 6, 7, 8, 9]. Many studies have shown that the SNP approach in livestock and humans fails to identify these critical sequences and can be misleading at best [10]. SNPs are neutral markers of parentage rather than functionally important [11].
\nOne major benefit of ancestral haplotypes as opposed to SNPs is that it is possible to use interspecies translation. During mammalian evolution, polymorphic frozen blocks have diverged to some extent although the functionally important sequences tend to be conserved.
\nAs shown in Figure 3 and Table 1, there are similarities between genomic regions on Hosa 17 and Bota 19. Although there have been architectural changes such as insertions and transversions, the gene content has been preserved.

Bota 19 was chosen as the reference because of its critical role in determining the degree of marbling between individuals of a breed, F1 crosses and between breeds [5, 12, 13, 14].
\nHosa 17 was chosen for comparison because it contains some of the same genes such as TCAP. Further analysis revealed an extraordinary degree of preservation or synteny in spite of an evolutionary separation time of at least 50 million years and therefore millions of generations. Implicit is that there are functional reasons for similarities in genomic architecture.
\nYet further analysis suggests some explanations for the co-location of similar genes. Irrespective of cis and trans interactions between the protein products, there is evidence of co-regulation (see, e.g., SREBP). In this context, we conclude that, although products and their regulating transcription factors are preserved, separation has permitted the insertion of species-specific elements, which control the quantitative differences between humans and cattle.
\nImportantly, as shown in Figure 3 and Table 1, Hosa 17 contains multiple candidates for involvement in human muscular dystrophy. There is even more complexity in explaining the multiple candidates as shown in Tables 2 and 3.

Thus, syntenic analysis has suggested a novel approach to identification of operative elements in marbling and in some forms of dystrophy.
\nThe substantial range of changes found in the human dystrophies is illustrated in the study of Dubowitz et al. [15].
\nWe are fortunate in having histological muscle samples from cattle with degrees of marbling [14]. Some of these changes are illustrated in Figures 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 from three animals (M508, M621, and M129) fed a standard ration for 471, 443, and 481 days respectively. The macroscopic measure of marbling (MSA MB) ranged from high to moderate (1100, 920 and 820, respectively) as expected in high content Wagyu (88, 75, and 63%, respectively). A common feature is the invasion of adipose tissue between intact muscle fascicles (Figure 4). For the most part, the process extends along the perimysium leading to variation in fiber size, staining of myofibers (Figures 5 and 6), and the formation of residual islands of myofibers (Figure 7), which suggests an explanation for fine (see Figure 1) rather than coarse (see Figure 2) marbling; fine is due to more aggressive invasion reflecting quantitative differences in gene regulation.

In some fields, there are collections of nuclei including intracytoplasmic (Figure 8).
\nThese observations have led us to the conclusion that the extent and type of marbling is a function of the aggressive extension of the advancing adipocytes with secondary loss of myocytes.
\nSome forms of human dystrophy have very similar histopathology, for example, congenital myopathies as illustrated by Dubowitz et al. [15] and reproduced here in Figure 9.
\nAs in human dystrophies, there can be different degrees depending upon the muscle group and the field selected. Here, we focus on

Accordingly, it will be possible to undertake detailed time course studies so as to monitor sequential changes and eventually responses to therapy. Future studies should also address bovine steatosis. The pathology [16, 17] is different from marbling. Adipocytes occur within rather than around fascicles (Figure 10) suggesting that the process may be a function of differentiation of stem cells, rather than invasion [1].
\nIn spite of similarities in pathology and genomics, there is more to learn before precise translation is possible. However, there are strong indications that such approaches could have important implications for human dystrophies and other muscle diseases. Moreover, a better understanding of the control factors and signals responsible for determining the relative proportions of muscle and adipose tissue in bovine muscles, and how they are coordinated, is fundamental and will be crucial to understanding more fully the significance of adipose tissue replacement in human dystrophies and to developing new therapeutic strategies for these diseases.

This leads to the environment’s ability to foster life being reduced as human, animal, and plant health become threatened. This occurs due to bioaccumulation in the food chains as a result of the nondegradable state of the heavy metals. Remediation of heavy metals requires special attention to protect soil quality, air quality, water quality, human health, animal health, and all spheres as a collection. Developed physical and chemical heavy metal remediation technologies are demanding costs which are not feasible, time-consuming, and release additional waste to the environment. Hundreds of plants in laboratory experiments demonstrate the potential to remediate varying concentrations of heavy metals; however, the remediation capacity of most of these plants proved unsatisfactory under field conditions. The identification and selection of plants with higher metal uptake capacity or hyperaccumulators are one of the limitations of this technology. Additionally, the mechanism of heavy metal uptake by plants remains to be sufficiently documented. The halophyte plants are famous for their adaptation to harsh environmental conditions, and hence could be the most suitable candidates for heavy metal hyperaccumulation. The state of Qatar in the Gulf region encompasses rich resources of halophytes that have the potential for future investment toward human and environmental health.
