Pavel Krivenko is currently a professor in the Department of Technology of Building Structures and Products and director of the Scientific Research Institute for Binders and Materials, Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture, Ukraine. He graduated from the Dnepropetrovsk Civil Engineering Institute, Ukraine, with a diploma in Engineer in Building Materials Technology in 1961. He received his Ph.D. (Eng) from the Kyiv Civil Engineering Institute, Ukraine, in1971, and a DSc (Eng) from Kyiv Polytechnical Institute, Ukraine, in 1986. His research interests include the synthesis of alkali-activated cements and materials based on them. He has published more than 20 books, more than 1,000 papers in international journals and conference proceedings, and more than 500 patents. He is a principal investigator in several national and international projects in Ukraine and abroad. He is a member of three International Union of Laboratories and Experts in Construction Materials, Systems and Structures (RILEM) technical committees on alkali-activated materials, board member for three international journals, winner of the State Prize of Ukraine in the field of Science and Engineering (2001), and supervisor of five DSc (Eng) and twenty-three Ph.D. theses.

Concrete made using mineral cements, the raw materials which on earth are practically endless, is known as one of the oldest building materials and during the last decades of the twentieth century has become a dominant building material for general use. At the same time, the requirements of the quality of concrete and its performance properties, in particular compressive strength, durability, economical efficiency, and low negative impact of its manufacture on the environment have not yet been completely met. Bearing these requirements in mind, researchers and engineers worldwide are working on how to satisfy these requirements. This book has been written by researchers and experts in the field and provides the state of the art on recent progress achieved on the properties of concrete, including concrete in which industrial by-products are utilized.
