Corrosion is a basically harmful phenomenon, but it can be useful in some cases. For instance, environment’s pollution with corrosion products and damage to the performance of a system are among its harmful effects, whereas electric energy generation in a battery and cathodic protection of many structures are among its advantages. However, these advantages are almost nothing as compared to the costs and effects imposed by its detrimental influences. The enormous costs of this phenomenon can be better understand through studying the published statistics on direct and indirect corrosion damages on economy of governments. The direct cost of corrosion is near 3 % of the gross domestic product (GDP) of USA. Considering this huge cost, it is necessary to develop and expand the corrosion science and its protection technologies.",isbn:null,printIsbn:"978-953-51-1223-5",pdfIsbn:"978-953-51-6359-6",doi:"10.5772/57010",price:159,priceEur:175,priceUsd:205,slug:"developments-in-corrosion-protection",numberOfPages:710,isOpenForSubmission:!1,isInWos:null,isInBkci:!1,hash:"8ff86fac7ac8bce142fdc3c0e5a79f30",bookSignature:"M. Obesity is the noticeably fat mass, and an excessive nutrient intake is a cause of that. When the energy in body exceeds healthy limit, the much energy is stored as fat or in fatty tissue. Obesity was accelerated by eating fatty foods, insufficient exercise, and accumulation of stress.
\n\t\t\tObesity has come to be recognized as a critical global health issue. Rates of obesity in North America and in most European countries have more than doubled in the last 20 years and over half the adult population are now either overweight or obese (1). According to the report which was released by Korea National Health Insurance Corporation (NHIC) in 2004, the obesity rate for subjects of the survey in 2003 was 56%, and increased in all age groups from 10s to 60s. In addition, the study by Oh
Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is one of trans fatty acids and found mainly in the meat and dairy products of ruminants (3). CLA has received attention for its antioxidant and anti-cancer properties (4). Studies of CLA show that CLA supplementation tends to reduce body fat, improve serum lipid profiles, and decrease whole-body glucose uptake. However, the results of some studies on rats suggest that CLA supplement was not effective in reducing the fat accumulation (5). Though studies done on CLA have increased, they do not all show uniform results, showing it is necessary to summarize and analyze them.
\n\t\t\tMeta-analysis is a tool for summarizing the results of studies with related research hypotheses. It has three steps; deciding the association measure for detecting difference between groups, summarizing the association measure in assumed model, and identifying publication bias. The association measures in meta-analysis are the measure of related effects from the primary research such as the standardized mean difference, the mean difference, the risk difference, and an odds ratio. The decided measure is combined using only within variation of studies on the assumption that the results are homogeneity and uniformly distributed, and then it is tested on whether the homogeneity assumption is plausible. If the results are heterogeneity, the measure is recombined using within variation with the estimated the between variations of the studies. The former model is called the fixed effect model and the latter is the random effect model. Because significant results are more likely to be submitted or accepted than insignificant ones and the combined estimates are calculated by only published researches, the bias easily occurs in a small number of studies and is called the publication bias. If the publication bias is doubtable, the combined estimate is adjusted or the additional studies are required (6, 7).
\n\t\t\tThe purpose of this study was to summarize the studies about effect of CLA on factors related to the anti-obesity in experimental rats by meta-analysis.
\n\t\tThe studies used in this meta-analysis were searched on the ScienceDirect in English, the DBpia database, and the KISS (Koreanstudies Information Service System) in Korean. The search keywords used were CLA, weight, health, or fat and the research was limited to the experimental rat studies. About 50 studies were collected and 12 studies were finally selected after omitting some studies with insufficient information, such as no sample variance or no sample size (5, 8-18).
\n\t\t\t\tThe factors used to investigate the effect of CLA were collected from target studies, if it was studied in at least 2 studies. The selected factors were body fat (%), epididymal fat (g/100g), fat cell size (μm), final body weight (g), food intake (g/d), leptin (pg/ml), liver-TC (mg/g), liver-TG (mg/g), plasma-TC (mg/dl), plasma-TG (mg/dl), and weight gain (g/d). The unit of each factor was uniformly changed.
\n\t\t\t\tIn each study, there were two groups. One group of rats was treated with fat source such as beef tallow, coconut oil, corn oil, fish oil, safflower oil or soybean oil (FR), and the other group of rats was treated with fat source supplemented with CLA (FRC). Because the size of studies after grouping by treated fat source was not enough large, the each fat source has similar effect on obesity.
\n\t\t\tSince the mean difference between FR and FRC was used for test on anti-obesity effect of CLA, the association measure was decided as the mean difference (MD) of each factor; mean of FRC minus mean of FR. The combined MD of each factor was calculated by the inverse variance method and the mean weighted by inverse variance in the primary studies. If the homogeneity was accepted by Cochran’s Q test, it is assumed that the effect measured in the study population has a single value. The association measure is estimated by using a variation within the studies in the fixed effect model. To reduce the bias caused by heterogeneity, meta-regression models are used to analyze association between treatment effects and study characteristics. The period and amount of CLA supplementation were considered as covariates, and the estimated coefficients of covariates were investigated for possible sources of heterogeneity. If the homogeneity was rejected, the combined MDs of studies were calculated in random effect model in which total variation defined the variation within studies with estimated variation between studies.
\n\t\t\tThe existence of publication bias was checked by using a funnel plot or Egger’s linear regression test. The funnel plot was a scatter plot of the association measure against a inverse of standard error of measure. If the shape of funnel plot about any factor is not funnel or cone around the combined MD, the publication bias was doubtable. Egger’s linear regression test was used to test the null hypothesis that the funnel plot was not asymmetry. Egger’s linear regression is a linear regression of standard normal deviate (defined as association measure over SE) against the inverse of SE, and there may be publication bias if the estimated intercept is significantly different from 0. A positive intercept indicates that more studies are associated with a bigger effect (19).
\n\t\t\tVersion 1.5 of MIX program was used for combining MDs, plotting the funnel plots and checking the publication bias. The STATA program was used for meta-regression.
\n\t\t\tThe combined MDs between FR and FRC were presented with p-value to test heterogeneity of results in Table 1. In the fixed effect model, the MDs were significantly different from 0 for body fat, final body weight, liver-TC, plasma-TC, plasma-TG and weight gain (<0.05). Especially the p-values tested for body fat, final body weight, and weight gain were less than 0.01, showing CLA significantly decreased the level of each of them.

Combined MDs and Homogeneity test in fixed effect model and random effect model. a)\n\t\t\t\t\t\t
The fixed effect model was inadequate in terms of body fat, epididymal fat, final body weight, liver-TC, liver-TG, plasma-TC, plasma-TG and weight gain, because of the heterogeneity of studies for them (p-value<0.05). The MD about heterogeneity factor was regressed against two covariates, amount and period of CLA supplementation, by meta-regression method in Table 2. Only the MD of the final body weight was significantly correlated with the period of CLA supplementation (p-value <0.05), and the coefficient of period was estimated -0.0698. That meant the MD of the final body weight was estimated to decrease by 0.0698 per unit increase in the period.
\n\t\t\t\tThe random effect model was used to combine MD on heterogeneity factors; body fat, epididymal fat, final body weight, liver-TC, liver-TG, plasma-TC, plasma-TG, and weight gain. The value of the MD of plasma-TC was significantly negative, but the value of the MD of other factors was not negative.

The funnel plots of fat cell size, food intake, leptine and plasma-TG were checked in the fixed effect model due to the homogeneity. The dots of fat cell size and the dots of leptine were not symmetric by combined MD (solid line), so the publication biases were doubtable. The dots of factors in the random effect model were symmetric by solid line, thus the publication bias were ignorable. Since the intercepts of Egger’s linear regression by factors in Table 3 were not significant (p-value >0.05), the funnel plot on each factor was symmetric and the publication bias was ignorable.

The factors related with fat deposition were body fat and epididymal fat, and our study showed that CLA supplement did not affect the fat deposition. The results of studies on body fat and epididymal fat were significantly heterogeneous. In fixed effect model, body fat was significantly affected by CLA. Under the heterogeneity of studies on body fat, the effect of CLA was not significant in random effect model. We could not check the condition of energy expenditure, and that was one of reasons for explaining about heterogeneity.
\n\t\t\tThe results of studies done on the final body weight and weight gain were very heterogeneous (p-value < 0.001), and the result of efficiency test of CLA in fixed effect model differed from one in random effect model. This situation happened due to extreme one of combined results. The extremely negative MD had a small standard error, so the high influence of them on combination made significantly negative value in fixed effect model but not in random effect model. After omitting the extreme value in analysis, the homogeneities results on final body weight and weight gain were accepted (p-value >0.05), and the effects of CLA on them were not significant.
\n\t\t\tThe level of plasma-TC was significantly decreased in FR than in FRC regardless of the homogeneity of the factors. Only in fixed effect model, the level of plasma-TG was significantly decreased in FR. According to Hwang and Kang, the reduction effect of CLA on plasma-TG was significant in the case rats that ware fed with beef tallow for 1 and 4 weeks and in the case rats that was fed with fish oil only for 4 weeks (20). The anti-obesity effect of CLA was assured like Hwang and Kang’s study.
\n\t\t\tIn this study, the researchers studied about effect of CLA on factors, such as body fat (%), epididymal fat (g/100g), fat cell size (μm), final body weight (g), food intake (g/d), leptin (pg/ml), liver-TC (mg/g), liver-TG (mg/g), plasma-TC (mg/dl), plasma-TG (mg/dl), and weight gain (g/d). The CLA supplement was significantly effective on reduction of body fat (%), final body weight (g), liver-TC (mg/g), plasma-TC (mg/dl), plasma-TG (mg/dl), and weight gain (g/d) with homogeneity assumption between studies. However, only plasma-TG was significantly decreased with the random effect model on heterogeneity factors. Further study should focus on what the effect of CLA depend on fat source.

\n\t\tHepatic lesions concern only 5–20% of patients with diagnosed cystic fibrosis. However they increase the level of fatalities, shorten the survival rate, and impair the quality of life. Liver diseases are the most common, non-pulmonary cause of death among patients with cystic fibrosis. They most often occur in the first decade of life. Cirrhosis is detected in about 10% of CF children under the age of 18 compared to 2% of adults with the same condition. The average age of the CF liver disease manifestation is about 10 years [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7].
Liver and bile duct diseases are a combination of complex processes of fibrosis, inflammation, remodeling, apoptosis, and cholestasis. They are a consequence of the abnormal functioning of the CFTR protein, immunologic reactions, and response to oxidative stress [5, 8, 9, 10, 11].
The important roles played by the pathophysiological changes of the bile duct include changes to the components of the bile (abnormal water and electrolyte contents and change to the pH of the bile) and changes to the profile of bile acids—to hydrophobic, abnormal transport of the bile, retention of toxic bile acids (taurocholic acid), and induction of pro-inflammatory chemokines which influence on biliary fibrogenesis. Factors contributing to the processes of precipitation of bile acids in the bile ducts include decreased synthesis of the salts of the bile acids, decreased absorption of bile acids from the lumen of the small intestine, and narrowing of the bile ducts impairing the outflow of the bile from the liver to the lumen of the duodenum [5, 8, 10].
So far, no specific mutation relating solely to liver damage in the course of cystic fibrosis has been discovered. Most commonly, these are the so-called “serious mutations” of the CFTR gene (delta F508,G524X, N1303K, CFTRdel21kB, 1811 + 1G- > C). The delta F508 mutation plays a particular role in the development of hepatic lesions in the course of cystic fibrosis due to its stimulation of an increased loss of bile acids with stools and the fact that it leads to the formation of more hydrophobic bile acids. Hepatic lesions co- occurring with cystic fibrosis in patients with the 3849 + 10kB C- > T mutation have not yet been the subject of interest. However, the clinical course in patients with diagnosed cystic fibrosis and the same mutation of the CFTR gene tends to vary. There is no strict phenotype–genotype corelation. The role of the SERPINE1 mutation: it occurs in about 2% of the patients with cystic fibrosis and in about 5% of the patients with cystic fibrosis and co-occurring hepatic lesions. Responsible for the synthesis of the inhibitor of serine protease. The protein connected to allele Z is concentrated within the endoplasmic reticulum of hepatocytes leading to their damage, inflammation, and cirrhosis. In about 10% of allele Z homozygotes, the accumulation of the SERPINA gene protein leads to neonatal hepatitis and in 2–3% of cases to fibrosis and cirrhosis. In pathogenesis some genes were suspected as a factor inducing pathological processes in the liver and bile duct in patients with cystic fibrosis (gene of plasminogen activator inhibitor type 1, genes relating to metalloproteinases, P1 glutation s-transferase gene, transforming growth factor beta gene, uridylyltransferase gene (UGT1A1). But the role is not strictly confirmed [12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17].
Chemokines play a role as an activator of stellate cells (source: hepatic macrophages, endothelial cells, bile duct epithelial cells, lymphocytes, blood platelets, and hepatocytes). The main chemokines are monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP1), macrophage inflammatory protein-1 beta (MIP1B), TGF-beta, TNF-alpha, platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), and interleukins IL-1, IL-6, and IL-10 [11, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23].

Hepatic insufficiency.
In the examination of Wilchanski et al., the presence of hepatic lesions (cystic fibrosis liver damage (CFLD)) was concluded in 28% (80/288) of CF patients. All patients with hepatic lesions were diagnosed with pancreatic insufficiency. No correlation between the occurrence of hepatic lesions and pulmonary lesions, respiratory insufficiency, the level of malnutrition, meconium ileus, and/or distal intestinal obstruction syndrome (DIOS) was concluded [24]. Lindblad observed meconium ileus in only 12% of CF patients, out of whom only 6/15 patients with meconium ileus had the symptoms of liver damage [6]. Siano did not prove the correlation between the occurrence of hepatic lesions in the course of cystic fibrosis and the pancreatic efficiency and the level of nutrition. In 2–5% of patients, focal biliary cirrhosis develops into multilobular cirrhosis [25].
Malnutrition influences on liver function in children with cystic fibrosis. Children with diagnosed cystic fibrosis and liver damage have lower body mass, height, circumference of the upper arm, and BMI. Patients with cystic fibrosis also have significantly lower levels of linoleic (LA), docosahexaenoic (DHA), and docosapentaenoic (DPA) acids. The influence of parenteral nutrition and antioxidant and vitamin deficiency is confirmed [26, 27, 28, 29]. Sometimes in children with cystic fibrosis especially with meconium ileus, total parenteral nutrition is necessary. Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) therapy is a well-recognized cause of liver injury. The histologic changes attributed to TPN in the literature vary widely. Total parenteral nutrition-induced liver disease develops in 40–60% of infants who require long-term TPN. The clinical spectrum includes cholestasis, cholelithiasis, hepatic fibrosis with progression to biliary cirrhosis, and the development of portal hypertension and liver failure in a significant number of children who are totally parenterally fed. The pathogenesis is multifactorial and is related to prematurity, low birth weight, and duration of TPN. The degree and severity of the liver disease are related to the recurrent sepsis including catheter sepsis, bacterial translocation, and cholangitis. The lack of enteral feeding leading to reduced gut hormone secretion, reduction of bile flow, and biliary stasis may be important mechanisms in the development of cholestasis, biliary sludge, and cholelithiasis.
In patients with cystic fibrosis, abnormal functions of oxidases and P450, CYP2C8, CYP2C9, and CYP3A4 cytochromes are observed. The dose of beta-lactam should be reduced by 20%. The doses of aminoglycosides should be decided upon depending on the level of the medication in the blood serum. Increased microsomal metabolism relating to theophylline and methylxanthine through the affected first phase of the biotransformation of the medications. Increased hepatic clearance of the second phase, which may be reflected in the abnormal metabolism of furosemide, lorazepam, and ibuprofen [30, 31, 32].
In about 30% of patients with cystic fibrosis, atrophic gall bladder, or the lack thereof, also its defects and/or of bile ducts is reported. No correlation between cirrhosis and abnormalities in the gall bladder and/or bile ducts has been observed. Gallbladder hydrops and lithiasis are more commonly observed in patients with cystic fibrosis than the healthy population. The narrowing of the distal regions of the bile ducts is frequent and may occur in even 90% of CF patients and contribute to the formation of gallstones [33, 34].
Cholelithiasis concerns 14–24% of CF patients. The following play a role in the pathogenesis of the formation of gallstones: abnormal bile content, increased excretion of bile acids with stools, and the formation of lithogenic bile where bile acids are interlocked with glycine. No correlation between the formation of gallstones and supplementation with pancreatic enzymes has been confirmed [1, 3, 22].
Risk factors for the development of liver diseases in cystic fibrosis:
Male gender—three fourths of patients with CFLD are male. Protective role of estrogens in female.
Coexisting meconium ileus (inconsistent data—from a five-time higher risk of developing hepatic lesions to a similar risk). Only 25% of patients with CFLD who had meconium ileus in the medical interview was identified. Meconium ileus is not a prerequisite for CFLD. Probably, parenteral nutrition is an additional factor.
Significant undernourishment.
Pancreatic insufficiency.
In most CF patients, the course of hepatic complications is symptomless. Pruritus sometimes occurs and jaundice in patients whose condition is advanced. Incidental finding of hepatomegaly is usually the first sign. In newborns, steatosis may be incidentally discovered in a routine abdominal ultrasound.
Clinical changes of the liver in patients with cystic fibrosis:
Focal hepatic fibrosis (72%)
Focal biliary cirrhosis (20–30%)
Multilobular biliary cirrhosis (5–15%)
Portal hypertension (2–5%)
Small atrophic gallbladder and narrowing of bile ducts (15–45%)
Cholelithiasis (14–24%)
Steatosis (25–60%)
Cholestasis in newborns (<10%)
Primary sclerosing cholangitis (rarely)
Cholangiocarcinoma (rarely)
Drug-induced, toxic liver damage [1, 3, 12, 24, 37, 38, 39, 40]
The levels of AlAT, AspAT, GGTP, bilirubin and bile acids, the APRI index, and FibroTest are recommended. It is believed that elevated levels of at least two hepatic parameters above the norm within at least 3 months is an indication of advancing hepatic lesions. But they have low sensitivity and specificity. Most patients with multifocal cirrhosis have normal test results. Isolated elevation of aminotransferases with concurrent normal GGTP index may indicate steatosis.
Ultrasound is inexpensive and is a noninvasive test. It allows assessment of the level of steatosis, symptoms of portal hypertension, and cirrhotic transformation of the liver. However, normal imaging of the liver does not exclude the ongoing process of fibrosis.
FibroScan is an effective and noninvasive tool to quantify fibrosis and steatosis in the liver diseases including cystic fibrosis. The stiffness of the liver tissue can be assessed based on shear wave velocity (the stiffness increases with the speed).
Liver biopsy is an invasive procedure and is prone to side effects and sampling. This is not a routine recommended procedure in patients with CFLD.
Fibroindex, aminopeptides of type III procollagen, collagen I, collagen IV, laminine, hyaluronic acid, and/or cytokines and chemokines relating to the process of fibrosis. There are studies on their usefulness in minimally invasive clinical diagnostics [27, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 47, 48].
The dose is 15–20 mg/kg b.m. in two divided doses over 24 hours.
There are only a few clinical trials assessing the effectiveness of ursodeoxycholic acid. There is insufficient evidence to justify its routine use in cystic fibrosis as a preventative measure. Present data suggesting that UDCA should be started before severe liver damage is present as it might be able to prevent the progression of CFLD and has the potential to induce a reversal of fibrosis [1, 2, 4, 40, 49, 50, 51].
The treatment of portal hypertension should include:
In patients with cystic fibrosis following isolated liver transplantation, there is an increased risk of pulmonary complications (severe infections). It seems that an FEV1 < 50% was associated with poor outcomes in isolated liver transplantation, and thus patients with poor lung function should be considered for combined lung-liver transplantation. For isolated liver transplantation, if the FEV1 is <40%, patients are listed with their MELD/PELD score plus a 10% mortality equivalence. If listed for a combined liver-lung transplantation with an FEV1 < 40%, the liver listing starts with a MELD of 40 [54, 55]. Simultaneous liver-pancreas transplantation restores exocrine and endocrine pancreatic function in patients with CFLD and enables improved nutritional outcomes concurrent with the potential for discontinuation of insulin and pancreatic enzyme supplementation therapies. Diabetes has been reported to exert a negative effect on the already decreased pulmonary function, observed in CF patients. FEV1 in CF patients with diabetes is markedly reduced in all age groups compared to CF patients without diabetes. Simultaneous liver-pancreas transplantation is associated with an improved BMI in the post-transplant course [56, 57].
The outcome for combined heart/lung/liver grafting in adult people with CF was poor, whereas liver transplantation alone had acceptable waiting times and good survival outcome. High incidence of renal impairment in this group, and in contrast to previous studies, largely in pediatric patients, respiratory function can decline dramatically [55, 58, 59, 60, 61].
European recommendations for the treatment of cystic fibrosis and hepatic lesions:
Biochemical tests (AlAT, AspAT, GGTP, FA, prothrombin time, blood platelets) every 6 months.
Imaging tests—abdominal ultrasound with Doppler option and elastography, alternatively annual CT or MR.
Ursodeoxycholic acid at 20 mg/ g daily with divided doses being more effective.
Panendoscopy performed every 2–3 years is necessary in patients with cirrhosis and or splenomegaly in order to exclude esophageal varices.
Assessment of the hepatopulmonary syndrome—assessment of intrapulmonary shunts as they intensify hypoxemia.
In the case of cirrhosis—assessment of the levels of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) every 6 months.
Mild esophageal varices—nonselective beta blockers? Level 2–3 varices—endoscopic treatment or intrahepatic portosystemic shunts.
Prevention of undernutrition (via feeding tube or PEG).
The etiopathogenesis of hepatic lesions in the course of cystic fibrosis is very complex and not yet fully explained.
The clinical symptoms of CFLD are not characteristic, and the clinical picture is often symptomless or limited.
Further studies into the causes of hepatic lesions in cystic fibrosis are necessary, which will contribute to the reduction in the number of deaths, extended survival rate, and improvement in patients’ quality of life.

The sheets are flexible and permeable and generally have the appearance of a fabric. Among polymeric synthetic fabrics, geosynthetics including geotextiles have special functions of separation, filtration, drainage, reinforcement, and erosion control in civil engineering applications. Also, geosynthetics such as geotextiles and geogrids are used in asphalt pavement reinforcement. An important function of these geotextiles is as cushion layers to prevent puncture of geomembranes (by reducing point contact stresses) from stones in the adjacent soil, waste, or drainage aggregate. Geotextiles, however, are made from a combination of two or more polymeric synthetic fabrics. In this chapter, geotextiles as polymeric synthetic fabrics are introduced not only for improvement but also maintaining stability of ground structure in civil engineering circumstance with their In subsequent years, the concept of 'telematic education” subsequently becomes well established in academic circles in South Africa, grew in popularity, and is adopted by many universities and colleges throughout South Africa as a medium of enhancing education and training, as a method to reaching out to far out communities, and as a means to enhance study from the home environment.\r\n\r\nProfessor Snyman in subsequent years pursued research in semiconductor physics, semiconductor devices, microelectronics, and optoelectronics.\r\n\r\nIn 2000 he joined the TUT as a full professor. Here served for a period as head of the Department of Electronic Engineering. Here he makes contributions to solar energy development, microwave and optoelectronic device development, silicon photonics, as well as contributions to new mobile telecommunication systems and network planning in SA.\r\n\r\nCurrently, he teaches electronics and telecommunications at the TUT to audiences ranging from first-year students to Ph.D. level.\r\n\r\nFor his research in the field of 'Silicon Photonics” since 1990, he has published (as author and co-author) about thirty internationally reviewed articles in scientific journals, contributed to more than forty international conferences, about 25 South African provisional patents (as inventor and co-inventor), 8 PCT international patent applications until now. Of these, two USA patents applications, two European Patents, two Korean patents, and ten SA patents have been granted. A further 4 USA patents, 5 European patents, 3 Korean patents, 3 Chinese patents, and 3 Japanese patents are currently under consideration.\r\n\r\nRecently he has also published an extensive scholarly chapter in an internet open access book on 'Integrating Microphotonic Systems and MOEMS into standard Silicon CMOS Integrated circuitry”.\r\n\r\nFurthermore, Professor Snyman recently steered a new initiative at the TUT by introducing a 'Laboratory for Innovative Electronic Systems ' at the Department of Electrical Engineering. The model of this laboratory or center is to primarily combine outputs as achieved by high-level research with lower-level system development and entrepreneurship in a technical university environment. Students are allocated to projects at different levels with PhDs and Master students allocated to the generation of new knowledge and new technologies, while students at the diploma and Baccalaureus level are allocated to electronic systems development with a direct and a near application for application in industry or the commercial and public sectors in South Africa.\r\n\r\nProfessor Snyman received the WIRSAM Award of 1983 and the WIRSAM Award in 1985 in South Africa for best research papers by a young scientist at two international conferences on electron microscopy in South Africa. He subsequently received the SA Microelectronics Award for the best dissertation emanating from studies executed at a South African university in the field of Physics and Microelectronics in South Africa in 1987. In October of 2011, Professor Snyman received the prestigious Institutional Award for 'Innovator of the Year” for 2010 at the Tshwane University of Technology, South Africa. This will ensure that we discover ways to live in our world that allows us and other beings to flourish. We can no longer rely on medicalized approaches to health that wait for people to become ill before attempting to treat them. We need to live in harmony with nature and rediscover the beauty and balance in our everyday lives and surroundings, which contribute to our well-being and that of all other creatures on the planet. This topic will provide insights and knowledge into how to achieve this change in health care that is based on ecologically sustainable practices.
