Post-modern society is viewed nowadays as a technologized society, where the great solutions to human problems can be solved by the progress of technology in economics from classical industry to communications. In this regard, nanotechnology was viewed from the beginning as the manipulation of matter at atomic, molecular and supramolecular scale leaved the established field of microfabrication, semiconductor physics, energy storage to extended surface science, organic chemistry and molecular biology applications. Nanotechnology presents the ability to create new materials with dimensions on the nanoscale together with a large range of applications in new domains as nanomedicine, nanoelectronics or biomaterials. From this point of view, in the last years nanotechnology is called to play an important part in the global food production, food security and food safety in the sense that the use of nanoscale micronutrients conduced to suppressing crop disease and the relationship between nutritional status and plant diseases are investigated. The large use of nanotechnology raises the problem of the toxicity of the new materials involved and their use in economics, this problem is associated with a poor legislation in the field regarding accidental release, atmospheric deposition, deliberate disposal in the environmental as pesticides, remediators, including the use of soil amendments containing nanomaterials (manuers, sludge) or water contamination for irrigation. In spite of this toxicological concern, the agriculture-nanotechnology is viewed as a solution, as a technological advancement in order to use efficiently the natural agriculture resources, i.e. water, nutrients or chemicals while farming. Besides the possible benefits of enhancing the crop yield, nanotechnology presents itself that having the ability to maximize the benefits of natural agriculture resources, through efficient products in the form of pesticides for pest and disease management and for sensors that monitors the soil quality and plant health, in the other words to solve a problem of environmental pollution. In this regard, over the last decade an important number of patents have been proposed and different products on the market that incorporated nanomaterials have been used in agricultural practice, e.g., nanopesticides, nanofertilizers or nanosensors.
\nAs a general aspect, of world-wide society characterized by a constantly growing of population number, there exists the most important challenge that of higher agriculture yields. The aim of application of nanomaterials in agriculture is to reduce the applied amount of plan protection products, to minimize nutrient losses in fertilization and increased the yields through an optimized nutrient management. Classical active substances used nowadays can be lost during application due to different processes as runoff, evaporation, photolysis, and hydrolysis or microorganisms degradation. Different nanomaterials used as additives are characterized by large surface area and as a consequence they are appropriate to sorption process minimizing in this way the losses by reducing runoff and decreasing releases kinetics. Special designed nanoparticles can protect the active ingredients from photodegradation or can enhance uptake into leaves and other parts of the plant. Nanomaterials characteristics conduced to the substitution hazardous organic solvents present in some plant protection products and can reduce the application rates through their enhanced reactivity. As it was expressed before, despite of these positive impacts some nanomaterials have properties that classified them as potentially hazardous. The use of nanomaterials in agriculture and especially in plant protection and fertilization may pose unpredictable risks due to the fact that their application is accompanied by an intentional input of nanomaterials in the environment. In this regard, the human and environmental exposure due to nanomaterial residues in crops and soil might increase due to bioaccumulation of nanomaterials in the environment and food chain [1]. The requirements of a growing food market implied the existence of an urgent demand for products containing nanomaterials due to a process of regulation. At the beginning of twenty-first century the most popular agriculture application of nanotechnology is focused on plant protection and fertilization. It is stated [2] that higher plants have an ability to develop mechanisms to perform satisfactory under hard atmospheric and soil conditions. In order to help plants growth one of the novel methods is the use of nanomaterials that possesses physicochemical characteristics to enhance the metabolism of plants. In this view, the fertilization that used nanotechnology can amplify the plant production by delivering the micronutrients on request and control the development of plants. Nanomaterials are capable to penetrate into cells of herbs, they can carry DNA and other chemical compounds in the cells [3], extending the possibility in plant biotechnology to target special gene manipulation.
\nOne of the most serious and important problems of agri-nanotechnology is the absence of analytical methods to quantify the concentration of nanomaterials in water, soil and air, in order to define an exposure limit. Part of difficulties is related to extraction and separation from soil matrix and interfering constituents, and the presence of very low concentrations, more over for metallic nanomaterials there exist different natural constituents as counterparts. However, the analysis techniques indicates possibility to extract these low concentrations by processes as X-ray based techniques, chemothermal oxidation, thermogravimetry or mass spectrometry, these techniques been used generally coupled on a measurement line. The evaluation risk of organic compounds used in plants protection products, namely the evaluation of persistence, bioaccumulation and toxicity is based on specific end points and parameters obtained from laboratory and field experiments. For instance, the persistence is evaluated considering the dissipation of 50% of initial concentration, bioaccumulation properties are measured of octanol-water partition coefficient and the evaluation of toxicity is based on aquatic toxicity namely the intrinsic toxicity of the compounds.
\nIn the agri-nanotechnology the enhanced yield is related to the potential nutritional value of nanomaterials, especially for the essential micronutrients necessary for host defense. The permanent search for new solutions to global food problem conduced to the application of nanotechnology to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of agriculture practice.
\nThe increase requirement of global food production is related nowadays with the necessity of application new technology for enhancing crop yield in order to satisfy the global food security. As a modern trend in this view, the application of nanotechnology solutions can bring a response to grave problem of different deficiencies in human population as deficiencies of iron, zinc, selenium, calcium, phosphorus or vitamin A. The nanotechnology can offer solutions as micronutrients in agriculture in order to optimize the deficient presence of these substances in soil, by their use in fertilization. Besides the possible studied benefits, it is stated [1] that the nanomaterials use in agriculture may pose unforeseeable risks due to the intentional input of nanomaterials in the environment that can led to human exposure related to bioaccumulation in crops and soil and as a consequence in the food chain.
\nThe great challenge of modern agriculture related to the use of nanotechnology is to regulate the products with the nano content in the condition where the nanomaterials pose problems to the regulatory bodies and on the other hand there is a lack of knowledge to the possible effect on the plant growth, i.e. to the genetics of plants. The possible use of nanomaterials in agriculture is a new nanotechnology solution under development now for a dozen years [4, 5] as studies regarding the use of nanoscale nutrients (metals, metal oxides, carbon) to suppress crop diseases [6]. In this view, the problem of agriculture in managing the crop disease is related to different attempts as genetic breeding, new pesticides products or new eradication protocols with the effect of the development of host plant resistance. Genetically modified plants raises different ethical problems related to the effect to the metabolism of human body, and this is a serious public concern.
\nA possible alternative for suppressing crop disease is the managing of plant nutrition statue and in this perspective the major limitation is that different crops have different nutrients requirements and the nutrient interacts with the level of plant disease in variable ways. As an example, the micronutrients are critical in the defense against crop disease where tissue infection induced reactions that conduced to the production of inhibitory secondary metabolites. These metabolites are generally generated by enzymes that requires activation by micronutrients cofactors, e.g. Mn, Cu and Zn as activating host defense enzymes i.e. phenylalanine or ammonia lyase. The availability of micronutrients level is related to soil characteristics, e.g. Fe, Mn, Zn are deficient in alkaline soils which limit uptake by roots and by consequence exposed roots to infections. Another way for enhancing disease defense is connected to non-essential elements, e.g. Al or Si, that offers resistance to a number of foliar and root pathogens although their presence in soil (e.g. Si) is frequently limited. As regarding Al, its application has been limited due to the fact that the over-application can cause significant crop damage and yield reduction, and insufficient presence modifies the acidity of soil [7]. The important characteristics of the nanoscale metals and metal oxides is the greatly their availability and translocation within plants. In the process of producing nanomaterials to be applied in agriculture there are used besides chemical and physical methods for synthesis the biosynthesis using plant extracts. The traditional method is the synthesis on chemical route, namely the reduction in liquid phase with common reducing agents as; citric acid, hydroxylamine, cellulose, hydrogen peroxide, sodium carbonate and sodium hydroxide. In the solutions are added stabilizing agents in order to assure uniform particle distribution and dispersion, agents such as: polyvinyl alcohol and sodium polyacrylate. The physical methods for synthesis include laser ablation, chemical vapor deposition (CVD), sonochemical reduction, supercritical fluids or gamma radiation. In the case of carbon, the fullerene synthesis is realized in arc discharge or gas combustion and carbon nanotubes are produced by CVD in the decomposition process of gaseous hydrocarbons. Different nano products that can be used as fertilizers have been patented in the last years as: active nano-grade organic fine humic (CN 1472176-A, Wu et al.); oxide nano rare earth (CN1686957-A, Wang et al.), carbon nanomaterials (US 0174032-A1, Lui et al.); nanosilver (KR 000265-A, Kim et al.); nano diatomite and zeolite (US 0115469-A1, Yu et al.), nano-selenium (US 0326153-A1, Yin et al.) or nano-silicon carrier (US 0225412-A1, Sardari et al.). The high-surface area nanoscale materials conduced to a more efficient retain of nutrients and represents a stable reservoir to plants [8], raising the potential for enhanced plants growth. The use of traditional is characterized by fertilizers with active ingredients that have low water solubility, the result being an inefficient availability to plants and furthermore a lack of control to pathogen agents. The nanofertilizers offer controlled release and synchronization of the nutrient flux over time with the uptake, minimizing the wasteful interactions with soil or air that conduced to nutrients loss. From the roots of the plants the nanomaterials as ZnO, TiO2, CeO2, Fe3O4, Ni(OH)2, C70 fullerenes, Al, Cu, Ag, carbon nanotubes (CNT), are uptake and translocated to plant stem where partly are deposited (C70, Fe3O4,CeO2, Ni(OH)2) or partly are foliar deposited (Al, Ag, Cu, Zn, ZnO, CeO2, Fe3O4, C70). The root cell of a plant has different absorption zones for different kinds of nanomaterials, for instance Fe3O4 has absorption areas in epidermis, cortex and cambium; Ni(OH)2 in epidermis, cortex, cambium and metaxylem, Ag in epidermis and cortex or Ag2+ in epidermis, cortex, endodermis, and metaxylem.
\nRegarding nanomaterials exposure there exists a positive experience impact on crop growth and pathogen inhibitions, as related to antimicrobial activity for Ag, ZnO, Mg, Si or TiO2. The effect on different plants of the foliar exposure to nanomaterials as ZnO conduced to increase in shoot length (15.1%), root length (4.2%) [9], increase in chlorophyll (24.4%) soluble leaf protein (38.7%) or increase in acid phosphatase (76.9%), alkaline phosphatase (61.7%) and phytase (>3x). The effect of tobacco culture cell exposure to MWCNT (multiple wall carbon nano tubes) conduced to enhanced cell growth and regulate cell division by activating water channel protein [10] and the effect of 50 μg/ml on tomato roots to MWCNT conduced to enhanced fresh and dry mass besides changes in gene expression (water channel protein) [11]. The foliar and root application of nanoparticles of Fe2O3 conduced to the increasing of root elongation and to the increase of photosynthetic parameters by foliar application [12]. The application of Mn in concentration 0.05–1 mg/L on Mung bean roots in a Hoagland culture solution conduced to an increase in shoot and root length, dry and fresh biomass and rootlet number [13]. The effect of spinach roots exposure to TiO2 nanoparticles present in soil conduced to an enhanced growth rate and chlorophyll as well as an enhanced rubisco activity and photosynthetic rate [14]. The silver nanoparticles exhibit an intense inhibitory activity to microorganisms, in this regard Ag NPs damaged and penetrate the cell membrane subsequently reducing the infection [15]. Another nanomaterial with intense antimicrobial activity is ZnO NPs that is effective to pathogen control growth, also characterized by a lower toxicity in comparison to Ag and with benefits on soil fertility. It is worth to mention, that in general the discussion to nanomaterials in agriculture refers also to a most prominent fraction of nanomaterials that are non-solids comprising nanoscale structures that can encapsulate an active ingredient in plan protection product. Generally active substances have poor solubility in water and at room temperature are brought to solution with organic (co)solvents. In order to avoid the use of organic (co)solvents one solution is stated [30] the use of oil/water emulsions. Generally the physical appearance of non-solid nanomaterials are lipid base in liposomes, micelles or cochleates, in polymer based in micelles, nanosphere, nanocapsules and polymersomes or in emulsions base as liquid crystals and microemulsions. The nanomaterials in non-solid forms enhance the solubility and the coverage of the hydrophobic leaf surface together with the penetration of the active substances through the cuticula.
\nAs presented, the characteristics of solid and non-solid nanomaterials have been investigated in the last decade in order to understand the effect of nanonutrients in culture fertilization as well as in plant protection with promising results together with various studies regarding the toxicity of nanoparticles in the environment.
\nThe nanotechnology application in agriculture is for our world one of the most important domains of study due to the possibility of increasing for different culture production and assisted plant protection against pests and diseases together with the monitoring of pathogenic agents. In this regard, the application of nanotechnology in the control of crop yield and crop protection is relatively recent compared to organic or chemical nutrients and different drug delivery or pharmaceuticals [31, 32].
\nOne of the most important nutrients for humans and plants is iron (Fe) where iron deficiency is common in nowadays human diet affecting over 2 billion people in the world [33] Iron is essential for plant development and plays an important part in photosynthetic process being implied in redox reaction as well as generating reactive oxygen species [34]. Due to its properties iron containing nanoparticles have been used as nano-fertilizer for nutrition of plants. As an example there was observed [35] a positive effect of nano-FeO and nano-ZnCuFe oxide on the growth of mung (
One of the elements that results from the rapid industrialization is cadmium-Cd and as a consequence there exists an irreversible exposure in the environment, especially in the soil. The Cd absorption in the plants from soil or air through aerial deposition and its transfer into different parts of the plants can cause several abnormalities in plants as reduced growth and yield [42]. The major entry gate of Cd in plants is the roots while the toxic element entry in the human body is the consumption of contaminated food. The excess of Cd in plants affected the plant growth by reducing the production of reactive species, electrolyte leakage, hydrogen peroxide and malondialdehyde concentrations in plants [42]. As a solution to reduce the Cd content in soil is the application of biochar, as a carbon rich pyrolyzed organic biomass that is effective in reducing bioavailability of metals in soil [43]. These properties are based on biochar high pH, cation exchange capacity, nutrient retention capacity including water retention capacity and lower bulk density [44]. The use of nanotechnology in agriculture can rise different problems as the role of foliar application of ZnO nanoparticles combined with soil applied biochar in Cd accumulation by plants [45], in this regard it was stated that compared to other cereals maize (
The effect of nano-boron (B) fertilizer on the mineral nutrition and fruit yield was put into evidence by on pomegranate trees culture [55]. It was observed that a foliar spray of nano-B (concentration 6.5 mg BL−1) in combination with nano-Zn increased significantly the fruit yield up to 34% depending on treatment, with an accent to nano-B fertilizer. Also, the foliar application of these nano-fertilizers increased the number of fruits per tree, without an effect upon fruit cracking. As regards the fruit size physical parameters as fruit diameter, fruit calvyx diameter or average weight, they are not affected significantly for the treated trees, but the pH pomegranate juice increased to 0.62 pH units under fertilization. Concentrated nano-B foliar application caused small (1%) but statistically constant changes in the amount of total phenolic compounds in pomegranate juice whereas the antioxidant activity is not affected. The total amount of sugar in pomegranate fruit juice increased up to 4.6% at discussed nano-B concentration with no significantly increase in total anthocyanins under treatment. The action of nano-B fertilizers is also efficient in fruit crops as almond, apple, pear, persimmon or peach.
\nCalcium (Ca) is an important macro-element that plays an important role in plants including structural functions of cell walls, stabilization of cell membrane, maintenance of cell turgor pressure and counter-ion for inorganic and organic anions in vacuoles, as well as cytoplasmic messenger. Calcium cannot be transferred through from the older tissue to other parts of plant on the basic phloem pathway and Ca xylem translocation depends on unidirectional transpiration stream [56]. Studies of foliar application of nano-Ca on pomegranate trees shows no significant effect on fruit yield and to the number of fruits per trees [57]. Nano-Ca fertilization increased the Ca leaf concentration, whereas the foliar treatment decreased significantly pomegranate fruit cracking. The total phenolic compounds in pomegranate fruit juice is decreased in nano-Ca fertilization but with no significant effect on antioxidant activity and total anthocyanin content. Foliar application of Ca reduces the fruit cracking due to its role on cell wall, in enhancing the mechanical properties of plant tissue. However, the foliar fertilization of Ca had no significant effect on yields for kiwifruit, strawberry, grape and cherry.
\nManganese (Mn) is a micronutrient required by most of the plants die to its implication in biochemical reactions, as those required by dehydrogenases, decarboxylases, kinases, oxidases, peroxidases enzymes and to their role in fighting oxygen reactive species in plants. Plants required 20–40 mg Mn/kg of dry weight for its various functions e.g. in tricarboxylic acid cycle, oxidative and non-oxidative decarboxylation reactions and for different synthesis as carotenoids, sterols or gibberellic acid. The most important process of photosynthesis, implied the final conversion of absorbed light to energy via enzymatic reactions. Among them, a studied Mn-containing enzyme, is found in PSII oxygen evolving complex, a multi-step enzymatic pathway where Mn is required, as a cofactor in both lower and higher plants for the Hill reaction-the water splitting and oxygen evolving system [58]. Mn plays an important role in the synthesis of fatty acids and carotenoids, as well as in cell division and elongation. A normal function of the plant as biological system is affected by abiotic stress defined any adverse force or condition that affects its normal functioning. Abiotic stresses as drought, flood, salinity or harsh temperature conduced to an excessive amounts of reactive oxygen species that potentially injure proteins, membrane lipids, carbohydrates and DNA. The application of Mn increased the leaf area, photosynthesis rate and stomatal conductance in drought stress conditions, reducing the production of reactive oxygen species in plants. These reactive species also accumulated in inside the plants under thermal stress as harsh temperatures, that causes damage to cellular compounds and metabolic processes. It was suggested [59] that salinity inhibits the uptake of Mn inside plants inducing deficiency, in this case the foliar application increased stem diameter, fresh and dry biomass, number of seeds and different biochemical parameters as total protein or Hill reaction activity. The application of Mn nanoparticles on wheat applied by foliar exposure or soil amendment showed [60] no inhibition of vegetative or reproductive development, further more Mn nanoparticles significantly reduced Mn accumulation in shoots but increased the translocation efficiency in grains compared to classical Mn fertilizers due to a greater reactivity and non-toxicity due to a slower and a continuously availability of soluble Mn from Mn nanoparticles as compared to ionic Mn salt. The Mn nanoparticles greater photophosphorylation and oxygen evolution compared to bulk Mn suggested its novel potential nano modulator of the photochemical pathway in agriculture [61]. Furthermore Mn nanoparticles are viewed as a stimulant of plant growth and of metabolic processes as alkaloids production. In infested soils, foliar exposure to Mn oxide nanoparticles reduces disease up to 28% as compared to controls [62], the plants can have cross-tolerance between abiotic and biotic stresses, and in this regard stress tolerance can help plants to form faster and more resistant manner to additional environmental changes. The propose mechanism for the distribution of Mn nanoparticles through the plant incudes transportation from the root through the vascular system, a process considered as active-transporting as long as includes signaling, recycling and plasma membrane regulation. Generally the excess amounts of Mn in plants is not benefic to their health by interfering with the uptake, transport and utilization of other minerals as Ca, Fe or Mg as being competitive for the same ion transport.

Silver (Ag) is known as an element with antiseptic characteristics and it is important to understand its effect upon soil microbial community. Microorganisms are key regulators of biogeochemical recycling of nutrients in the environment and assist in maintaining the overall health and function of ecosystems [68]. The soil is regarded as a complex system and its physicochemical characteristics as pH, texture and organic matter content can influence the nanoparticles properties introduced in it, a fact that can conduce to an increased or a decreased bioavailability and toxicity of nanoparticles. The effect of Ag nanoparticles on the microbial diversity and enzyme activity of soil is regarded as a significant decrease in microbial mass as a function of increasing Ag nanoparticles concentration. [69]. Ag nanoparticles had impact on vascular plants, presenting positive or negative effects on seed germination, root growth and plant biomass [70]. In Ag nanoparticles application on wheat plants, there was not observed a significant effect with the exception of root fresh weight and root length that presents a negative response at 75 ppm treatment while in cowpea and
Titanium oxide (TiO2) mineral is naturally occurred in four natural polymorphs: akaogiite (monoclinic), brookite (orthorhombic), anatase (tetragonal) and rutile (tetragonal). TiO2 nanoparticles are explored due their use as an antimicrobial agent and photocatalyst in order to remove organic compounds from contaminated air, soil, and water. Ti is not an essential element for plants, therefore TiO2 nanoparticles are not viewed as plant nutrients but plays a potential role in plant protection and at lower doses its effective to its properties as a photocatalysts or an UV protector. It was stated [71] that exposure of naturally aged spinach seeds to TiO2 nanoparticles (rutile) at concentration of 250–4000 mg L−1 significantly increased the germination rate, the germination index, the dry weight of seedlings and vigor index of seeds. It was observed that under hydroponic conditions on agar, TiO2 nanoparticles generally cause positive or non-consequential effects on plant growth for different food crops. For example, in hydroponic conditions it was observed a significant increase in the root and shoot length of
Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element for humans and animals and is beneficial for plants at low concentrations particularly under stress conditions acting like an antioxidant. Cereals are a good source of Se as it is present in the form of Se-methionine [73]. The total concentration of Se in most of soils is 0.1–2 mg kg−1, with factors that affects Se solubility as: soil pH, redox potential, calcium carbonate level, cation exchange capacity, organic carbon, iron and aluminum level as well as the plants capability to produce root exudates. Selenium is most available in alkaline soils in the form of selenite, in acidic poorly aerated Se occurs in insoluble selenide forms, the lower limit for Se concentration in soil is 0.5 mg kg−1. Selenium fertilization rate and its chemical form directly influenced Se grain concentration affecting the yield, its application form being foliar or liquid on the soil surface. Low concentrations of Se had a positive effect on growth of ryegrass, lettuce and potato due to its antioxidant action. It was stated [74] that 10 g Se selenite per ha can increase wheat Se concentration from a base level of 30–100-200 μg kg−1 to recommended level of 300 μg kg−1 as a minimum target. Agronomic use efficiency is higher for foliar application than soil application. Agronomic bio-fortification is an inexpensive method for the increase of Se intake by humans but the limited Se resources indicated that fertilization strategies had to increase agronomic use efficiency in environmental conditions by improving agro-technical measures.

Regarding the nanotoxicity of nanoparticles action, the involved mechanism is not entirely understand, this mechanism is assumed in the sense by the changes related to the chemical structure, particles size and active surface area of nanoparticles. It is stated [80] that the toxicity action is focused on two directions: i.e. (a) a chemical toxicity based on the chemical composition as the released of toxic ions and (b) stress or stimuli caused by the surface, size or shape of particles. As viewed from chemical physics processes, the solubility of oxide nanoparticles affects the cell culture response and nanoparticle mediated toxicity is partly explained by the release of dissolved components of them [81]. In comparison to metal toxicity in plants and animals, the nanoparticles pathway is different, a problem solved by the introduction of different parameters in experimental tests to evaluate the nanoparticles dynamics. In a plant culture exposed to nanoparticles, the gain and losses related to the development, growth and productivity are not exclusively part of nanoparticles effect but they can be viewed as a participation of the primary ions to biological processes active in plants. Regarding the presence of nanoparticles in soil, as culture area for plants, had to be considered the interaction with the microorganisms in soil because they can positively interact with plants e.g. arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi [80]. The nanoparticles interaction with plants e.g. accumulation in plant biomass affects their fate and transport in the environment. There exists a first report [82] in 2007 regarding the negative effects of nanoparticles upon several plants as corn, cucumber, soybean, cabbage and carrot at relatively low dosage. At microscopic scale, the analysis of the chromosome morphology showed a relation between increased number of aberrations and the increased concentration of nanoparticles e.g. the appearance of stick chromosomes [83]. The phyto-toxicity was observed at molecular and nuclear cell level because the occurrence of stick chromosomes might be related to the degradation or de-polymerization of chromosomal DNA [80]. The extended development of modern agriculture brings besides some true benefits regarding crop productivity increasing problems related to environmental contamination with toxic elements e.g. metals or pesticides compounds and from this point of view nanoparticles used can aggravate the situation. The process of heavy metals accumulation by plants is related for the large majority of plants to roots accumulation and only a small part is translocated to the aboveground of the plants [84]. There are evidence [85] to a translocation process from the roots to the fruits, without the existence of changes due to biochemical processes. It is important to note that the concentration, plant organ or tissue, exposure rate, elemental form, plant species, exposure dosage (chronic/acute) affects the plant response and in particular the distinct stress response. This is the reason why the complex process of utilization nanoparticles in agriculture has to be monitored to a level that avoids further environmental contamination i.e. soil, water and air.
\nOne of the essential problems that limits crop production is the low availability of phosphorous (P) in many agricultural regions. In order to increase the phosphorous content in the soil it is necessary to apply P fertilizers, because phosphorous is an essential element for plant growth. Besides classical fertilizers, nanotechnology can offer a solution to supply the micronutrients deficiencies for plants development. Among other important plants for the use in medicine are those conducted to the extraction of essential oils as basil and lavender. Essential oils are complex biostructures and contain a lot of chemical compounds from different classes as: terpenoids, ketones, aldehydes and esters with a composition depending on the plant’s origin and quality, harvest time, climate, soil and extraction method. About 90% of the bioactive components of essential oils are monoterpenes and in the oxygenated form the bioactivity is enhanced. The possibility of covering hydroxyapatite with different molecules, e.g. essential oils offer a solution to apply in food industry, in the idea that HAp is an essential component of human organism. In this regard, the potential use in medicine e.g. bone reconstruction could help the reducing of postoperative infections after different implants. \nAs it was presented, in the last few decades, nanotechnology reveals its benefit usage in different activity fields and in particular in biotechnology and agriculture. Fertilizer compounds are essential for our quality of soil and water for the development of plants in order to increase the crops in order to cover what is needed to sustain the food necessities all over the world. Therefore there exist a necessity to decrease nutrient casualties in fertilization, and to amplify the plant product by the operation of novel uses with assistance of nanotechnology and nanomaterials. This type of fertilization delivers the nutrients on request, control the use of chemical fertilizers that regulate growth and development of plants and raise the activity of target vegetal organism. In this regard have been presented the effects of different nanomaterials and nanoparticles upon selected plants culture as wheat, maize, soybean, etc. taking into account their growth morphological parameters and the nanoparticles influence upon plant metabolism. The present and future use of nanoparticles as micronutrients is affected by different risks related to nano-toxicity of micronutrients, a problem to be solved by an appropriate and safe circuit of nanoparticles in soil, water, plants and at last in human organism. In this regard, it is important to quantify nanomaterials concentration in water, soil and air, where the concentration of relevant nanomaterials is essential to define exposure, a problem to be solved by the modeling of environmental concentrations. Due to the rapid development of manufactured nanomaterials it is important to evaluate their environmental and health impact, and it was stated to assure a safe circuit from micronutrients used for plants crop increasing to the beneficiaries of these plants, i.e. animals and humans. The present work is an approximately extensive presentation of the present status of the application of nanomaterials and nanoparticles in agriculture i.e. in plants fertilization with accent to the plants growth parameters, possible toxic risks and application to the antimicrobial activity.

\nThe whole world is ageing. Ageing population has become the experience of many developed countries and is fast reaching the turn of countries in the developing world [1]. People who were 65 years and above in age represented 5.1 per cent of global population in 1950, 9.0 per cent in 2018, and will be 16.0 per cent in 2050 [1, 2]. By that year 2050, 80 per cent of older people (60+ years) globally will be living in low and middle income countries (LMIC) [3]. It is important to note that while this demographic shift is a sign of societal progress which calls for celebration especially for LMIC, it may also pose serious health, security and development challenges if provision of and access to innovative and reliable healthcare financing mechanisms and strategies are not in view. This is because lack of access to reliable healthcare financing is capable of hindering older people from seeking competent medical attention to address their inevitable healthcare needs and challenges, and this in turn may lead to their suffering, insecurity and/or death [4].
In Africa, lack of access to reliable healthcare financing in old age poses serious development challenges and it is detrimental to healthy ageing, especially because older people are known to be facing various health challenges which require huge financial costs. According to World Health Organisation (2010), reliable healthcare financing mechanism is an important factor for healthy ageing [5]. Considering the financial and health vulnerability of many older people especially in developing countries of the world, provision of and access to reliable healthcare financing for this demographic category becomes vitally important and inevitable for healthy ageing [6]. It has been shown that it is not sufficient to provide reliable healthcare financing for older people, it is more important to provide them access to these services [7, 8]. Ensuring that older people have access to reliable healthcare financing in particular as well as other available and possible social support mechanisms that may encourage the provision of and access to reliable healthcare financing in general is a challenge and very key to healthy ageing. What are the factors influencing older people’s access to reliable healthcare financing? To answer this question, this article starts by conceptualising key concepts, explains the need for access to reliable healthcare financing among African elderly, provides statistical overview of access to reliable healthcare, and discusses various factors influencing access to reliable healthcare financing. Strategies for providing and accessing reliable healthcare financing are also discussed before providing summary and conclusion.
Access to reliable healthcare financing is conceptualised from multi-disciplinary points of view. Generally, ability to have what it takes to finance healthcare services without any constraining factor(s) whatsoever is fundamental in conceptualising access to healthcare financing. Following from this, access to reliable healthcare financing can mean ability to finance healthcare services without financial hardship. To be able to finance healthcare services without resulting in catastrophic or impoverished spending requires that psychological, economic, geographical, political, social, and cultural factors be put into consideration. Psychological point of view describes access to reliable healthcare financing as when an individual or her financial provider is in her right state of mind to finance healthcare services without resulting in catastrophic or impoverished spending [9]. Although financial resources may be physically available to finance healthcare services, it is believed that such resources are not useful if an individual or her representative is not in right state of thinking. From this perspective, a baby or an insane person does not have access to reliable healthcare financing even if she has all the wealth in this world. Hence, older people or their social support providers are considered to have access to reliable healthcare financing when they are in their right state of mind.
From economic perspective, access to reliable healthcare financing is conceptualised as the need for healthcare financing without financial hardship and the availability of such healthcare financing mechanism to meet the need. While the former explains the demand for reliable healthcare financing, the later describes the supply of reliable healthcare financing [10]. Hence, from economic perspective, an older person is said to gain access to reliable healthcare financing when the need for it meets its supply; that is, when there are available scarce resources (especially financial resources) to meet the insatiable need for healthcare services in old age. Again, while it is possible for adequate resources to be available to meet the need for healthcare financing at a given point in time, distance between health seeker and healthcare provider may be an important constraint. This calls for geographical conceptualization of access to reliable healthcare financing.
From geographer’s standpoint of view, access to reliable healthcare financing implies ability of healthcare seeker to be physically present at the geography (or location, place,
Political conceptualisation of access to reliable healthcare financing explains the governmental policies and political structures that influence people’s access to financial health resources. In every government, there are various healthcare financing mechanisms or models through which healthcare services can be financed [12]. The proportion of these models in total healthcare spending is determined by the political climate of every country. For instance, the proportion of out-of-pocket (OOP) payment in total healthcare expenditure is higher in developing countries than in developed countries [12]. Also, while healthcare providers receive payment for healthcare services more via health insurance in developed countries, the healthcare providers receive payment for healthcare services more via OOP in developing countries [13]. Hence, an older person who has psychological, economic, and geographical ability/advantage to finance her healthcare services may be denied access if such a person is expected to pay via health insurance of which she is not enrolled. Alternatively, an individual who is enrolled for health insurance may be denied access to reliable healthcare financing if payment from health insurance provider is not available probably as a result of workers’ strike due to government inability to meet insurance workers’ demands.
From social and cultural point of views, access to reliable healthcare financing can be conceived as involving the relationship between agency and structure. Here, agency represents individual ability to finance healthcare services freely and independently with as limited structural constraints as possible. On the other hand, structure entails the broader social, cultural, and structural patterns, arrangement and organisations within which an individual seeks to finance her healthcare services [10]. From these perspectives, an older person with the ability to finance her healthcare services without resulting in catastrophic or impoverished spending can be constrained if the prevailing healthcare system is challenged such as lack of appropriate medical technology or personnel, among many other challenges that may face healthcare system. Sociologists and Anthropologists have debated on whether primacy should be given to agency or structure in the process of analysing a given social system. For examples, Karl Marx, Émile Durkheim, Bronisław Malinowski, Alfred Radcliffe-Brown, and Max Weber gave priorities to either agency or structure in their social analysis. However, recent sociologists such as Anthony Giddens and Pierre Bourdieu have recognised the vitally importance of both agency and structure in altering a given social system. In his notion of structuration, Giddens (1984) stated that just as an agent can alter prevailing structure, the structure can as well change an agent [14]. Also Bourdieu realised the importance of both agency and structure when he used the concepts of ‘habitus’, ‘field’, and ‘capital’ to denotes actors with structured and structuring structure, social space where interaction and activities occur, as well as a symbol for the continual remarking of social order respectively [15]. In other words, Pierre Bourdieu used the concepts to explain an interplay in which the external is internalised, just as the internal becomes externalised [10]. Learning from the works of Giddens and Bourdieu, access to reliable healthcare financing is conceptualised as depending not only on individual, household and/or agency, but also on broader social, cultural and/or structural factors of a given social system. Implicitly, access to reliable healthcare financing not only involves internal forces but also external ones [10].
Older people’s access to reliable and sustainable healthcare financing requires that sufficient, uninterrupted and continuing funds are available to meet older people’s healthcare needs without compromising or negotiating future generations’ ability to achieve same purpose. An important step to achieving reliable healthcare financing for the elderly is to ensure that adequate and satisfactory social support is provided, the elderly have free access to funds or financial resources provided by social support system, and that funding increases consistently over the coming years to meet up with the demand of demographic transition. Raising and accessing reliable fund for healthcare financing of the elderly is the responsibility of household, community, state, and non-state actors of every country. Providing access to reliable healthcare financing is crucial for any country that aims at addressing the inevitable healthcare needs and challenges of the elderly.
Everyone desires to reach old age. Old age is the age when many life threatening diseases come up and these health challenges are costly to treat or manage. However, current financial capability of average elderly person in Africa as indicated in the income distribution of African countries shows that many Africans will not be able to afford medical treatment in old age [16, 17]. How can the elderly age gracefully? It is through the provision of and access to reliable (and sustainable) healthcare financing. There is therefore dire and urgent need for the elderly to access reliable healthcare financing in order to save the generation of elderly population in Africa. Older people experience a diversity of health states. While some elderly people in Africa are in relatively good physical and mental health, many more others experience considerable disability, and health and care challenges. Existing studies have established that the health of older people determines their productivity and the roles they play in the society, and that the health status and challenges among the elderly varies between and within countries, across sex, residence, ethnicity, and socio-economic status [18]. As a result, while health across the life-course has a significant impact on ageing experience, many older people are unable to adapt to changes in their health and remain independent and productive into very old age.
Common health challenges among older people include arthritis; heart or cardiovascular disease; cancer or malignancy such as lung, liver, and breast cancers; respiratory diseases; Alzheimer’s disease; osteoporosis; and diabetes mellitus, among many others [19]. Hence, the need to access reliable healthcare financing for sustainable healthcare, management and/or cure. Aside common health challenges, the needs of older people vary and are often categorised into physical, intellectual, emotional and social needs [20]. Some of these healthcare needs and challenges require reliable healthcare financing and access to them is crucial for healthy ageing. However, access to reliable healthcare financing are not equitably distributed among elderly population in Africa. While third agers (healthy older people after retirement and are assumed to be productive through a range of activities, reaching from paid work to volunteering, informal care-giving, do-it-yourself and care for oneself) tend to have more access to reliable healthcare financing, fourth agers (older people who are unproductive as a result of poor health after their retirement and they represent the traditional stereotype of older people, who can contribute only little, if any, to the development of a state) seem to have less access to reliable healthcare financing.
Globally, universal access to reliable healthcare financing has not been achieved and the proportion of people who have access to reliable healthcare financing vary from one country to another. Also, the varied rate of access across countries were unequally distributed and disadvantaged or vulnerable people were most denied access, including older people [17, 21]. For example, a study conducted among people aged 50+ years with chronic illness in six middle-income countries showed that access rates were unevenly distributed except in South Africa where primary healthcare was free for all [17]. Specifically, the study demonstrated that the proportion of older people with access to basic chronic care ranged from 20.6 per cent in Mexico to 47.6 per cent in South Africa. In another study among formal sector workers in Ilorin, Nigeria, it was shown that only 13.5 per cent of the respondents had access to reliable healthcare financing [21]. This proportion excluded the elderly population because they were no more members of the federal civil servants considering their retirement status and hence, lacked access to reliable healthcare financing. Ensuring that elderly population are provided with and have access to reliable healthcare financing is therefore crucial especially as the African society experiences demographic change in favour of older people.
Existing studies have not shown consensus on the factors determining access to reliable healthcare services among the elderly. While some agree that education, place of work, residence, income, age, number of general practitioners, sex, social network and social participation determine access to healthcare financing and services, some other scholars disagree to some of these factors. For examples, a study carried out in Ilorin, Nigeria established that respondents who had post-secondary education and who were in the federal civil service were more likely to have access to reliable healthcare financing [21]. This shows that illiterate older people might be denied access to reliable healthcare financing even if exempted from health insurance premium and the elderly who are not in federal civil service might not have the opportunity of being enrolled in health insurance scheme, which provides reliable healthcare financing. Another study conducted among the older Chinese indicated that income group, educational attainment, age-category, marital status, gender, and geographical location influence access to reliable healthcare financing [7]. Inability to access reliable healthcare financing is detrimental to population health and especially to vulnerable older people. Recent statistics in Nigeria showed that only very small proportion of the total population in Nigeria had access to reliable healthcare financing [22]. This is worrisome as it indicates high health inequality. Since pooled resources is the only reliable and sustainable source of healthcare financing [12], provision of, and access to, pooled resources becomes vitally imperative. It is important to note that differential in access to reliable healthcare financing and other social resources is influenced by many factors [23], and these are discussed in next section.
Having conceptualised access to reliable healthcare financing, demonstrated the need for access to reliable healthcare financing and shown the statistics of access to reliable healthcare financing, this section discusses various factors influencing access to reliable healthcare financing in old age. The discussions in this section are based on authors’ experiences in the healthcare system, narrative review of existing literature and interactions with some elderly people. Specifically, the factors that influence access to reliable healthcare financing in old age, as discussed in this section and depicted in Figure 1, include age, sex, availability of health insurance, income level, educational attainment, social capital and geographical factor.
Factors influencing access to reliable healthcare financing in old age.
Age describes how long one has lived on earth. A person’s age is considered a critical factor influencing access to reliable healthcare financing. While it is possible for many working class age category not to have any challenge accessing reliable healthcare financing, some retirees may experience more difficulty accessing reliable healthcare financing. This is because the rate of poverty among older people is more than among other age categories due to the fact that many older people are in their economically inactive phase of life [24]. Since older people are less productive (especially the fourth agers), financial resources for healthcare financing tend to be affected. In addition, in some African countries, a person’s age determines whether one will have social health protection or not. That is, provisions are made for older people in some African countries such as Ghana, Rwanda, and Senegal to be exempted from paying health insurance premium [25, 26]. This sort of arrangement increases older people’s access to reliable healthcare financing. Age factor determining healthcare access was confirmed by a study in Ghana which discovered that enrolment for National Health Insurance Scheme exemption policy in Ghana was higher among the elderly which invariably increases access to healthcare among older people [26]. Another study conducted among the middle-aged and older Chinese indicated that age-category of the elderly influences their chances of gaining access to reliable healthcare financing [7]. Therefore, as people aged, special consideration must be made in order to ensure that access to reliable healthcare financing is not denied.
Sex defines the biological variances between women and men, and these variances are universal and determined at birth. Access to reliable healthcare financing is also influenced by a person’s biological composition especially in African setting where patriarchy system dominates. In Africa, men often demonstrate hegemony in virtually all spheres of life including economy, family and religion. By virtue of men’s hegemonic position, they have more control over financial resources and this in turn affords them the opportunity to have more access to reliable healthcare financing. According to Mensah (2014), the long-standing patriarchy system on the continent of Africa influences access to healthcare and medicine in favour of males [10]. In addition, some scholars consider women to be in direr need for access to reliable healthcare financing than men considering their healthcare needs as pregnant women, new mothers and widows [7, 27].
Health insurance refers to a body that provides reliable healthcare financing for enrollees and it aims at ensuring equal access to quality healthcare services without financial hardship. The contribution of (social) health insurance in providing reliable healthcare financing cannot be overemphasised. This is because health insurance performs various benefits that help countries of the world to have access to reliable healthcare financing, and invariably move closer to achieving universal health coverage [12]. Generally, there seem to be consensus among global researchers that health insurance increases access to reliable healthcare financing [7, 16, 17]. Hence, enrolment in health insurance influences older people’s access to reliable healthcare financing. Importantly, older people who are excluded from health insurance (as the case is in many African countries) are denied access to reliable healthcare financing. Policies that will ensure that older people are enrolled in health insurance are therefore germane in order to safeguard the healthcare of the elderly and to ensure that their access to reliable healthcare financing are enhanced.
This is an important economic factor that influences access to reliable healthcare financing. Income level measures the amount or quantity of money or financial resources that an individual receives over a period of time. Individual income level varies and many factors determine a person’s income level [16]. When the income level of an individual is high, such an individual has more access to reliable healthcare financing. That is, there is a direct relationship between income level and access to reliable healthcare financing. In Africa, the income level of many older people is low due to many factors resulting in low access to reliable healthcare financing. To help this demographic category of people, engagement in productive activities for those who are still healthy after retirement, compulsory enrolment in health insurance with exemption of premium payment, and strong social support, among many others, may be the alternative means to increase older people’s access to reliable healthcare financing. These alternatives become vitally important because some recent studies confirmed that poverty level or lower income group reduces access to reliable healthcare financing and healthcare utilisation [7, 10].
An individual’s level of education is another factor that influences reliable healthcare financing. Operations of modern healthcare system requires that one has certain level of formal education such as ability to communicate officially. Those who lack knowledge of how modern healthcare system operate are sometimes deny access to reliable healthcare financing. For example, many people are excluded from social health insurance because awareness level is low or because they lack the knowledge of how it operates. Those affected are mostly those with low educational attainment. In Africa, most people in the informal sector, which more often correlate with those with lower educational attainment, do not have the privilege of being enrolled in health insurance or have the financial resources that can guarantee financial health protection in old age. According to Zhang et al., less-educated older people have a lower chance of accessing reliable healthcare financing [7]. Hence, elderly possible hope lies in strong social support via their social network in order to experience healthy ageing.
Social capital refers to network of relationships between or among people in a social system who share common interest, norms, values, and/or identity and who continue to engage in social interaction for the effective functioning of the social system. While social capital depends largely on extent of one’s social network, social network in turn depends on the level of effective and functional relationship one has established over one’s lifetime [8]. Hence, access to reliable healthcare financing is influenced by the level of relationship one has established in the life course. Older people need social network for effective and efficient healthcare financing considering their health and financial vulnerability, as well as their inability to engage in full productive activity. This is especially true for majority of older people in African who retired mostly from informal sector and who depend mostly on social capital such as children for their healthcare financing. Every potential older person is therefore encouraged to start building strong social networks in the life course as that can represent a safety net in old age [28]. Social support from social network can be informational, instrumental, emotional, or interactional. In a study conducted in United State of American (USA), it was found that informational support has a positive impact on healthcare access disparity among older people [28]. Another study among the elderly in Taiwan demonstrated that social capital in terms of social participation and social network influences access to reliable healthcare financing which invariably determines access to healthcare services [8].
As earlier conceptualised, access to reliable healthcare financing hinges largely on the ability of healthcare seeker to be physically available where healthcare financing services are required and provided. It is important to understand that many older people may have financial wherewithal but may be denied access as a result of their inability to be physically present where they will receive financial health resources or where their healthcare services will be paid for. Access to reliable healthcare financing is therefore influenced by geographical factor of where the health seeker is or where the healthcare services will be financed. In a case study of people living with HIV, ‘Mdm. A’ was denied access to healthcare financing and services as a result of prohibitive transportation costs [29]. Also, in a cross-sectional study in Sweden, it was found that mobility-related factor was associated with health-related quality of life in old age [11]. The issue of being physically present where healthcare financing is required and provided is crucial for many older people on the continent of Africa for them to experience healthy ageing because many of them rely on public transport that are either costly or unreliable. Also, many health seekers in Africa are very distant from where they will receive and finance their healthcare services because reliable healthcare facilities are often located in cities or urban areas and the ones in rural areas are only for the treatment of mild or minor ailment. Moving from rural areas to urban regions, for instance, poses difficulty for many older people in Africa due to transport mobility challenge [10]. Furthermore, intra-urban, intra-continental, and inter-continental disparities in access to reliable healthcare facilities and financing are usual in this present global society [10].
Broadly, to provide and access reliable healthcare financing, three strategies are cogent: Efficient collection of revenue, reprioritisation of government budgets, and engagement of innovative healthcare financing strategies especially through social support [5]. Principally, there are four models of revenue collection and these include compulsory prepayments, voluntary prepayments, external aid and out-of-pocket payment (OOP) [12]. Since OOP is an inequitable, unreliable and unsustainable source of healthcare financing, to provide and access reliable healthcare financing for the elderly therefore requires that countries pay more attention to other revenue collection mechanisms and provide means of accessing these financial resources. While all countries of the world, both poor and rich, can raise more health funding or diversify their funding sources, the number of countries that have any chance of creating sustainable fund from domestic sources alone is very minimal especially in Africa [5]. Hence, the need for global solidarity in order to ensure that many African countries are not denied access to reliable healthcare financing. If countries and international agencies were to fulfil their international pledges, external aid in developing countries will greatly increase and the shortfall in fund to provide reliable healthcare financing especially for the elderly would be virtually eliminated [5].
Given priority to government budgets can also contribute greatly to the provision of and access to reliable healthcare financing. Government budgets in Africa often give health a somewhat low priority. For instance, very infinitesimal number of African countries could reach the target that was agreed to by their Heads of States in the 2001 Abuja Declaration, to spend 15 per cent of their annual budget on health. Currently, only Madagascar allots above the agreed 15 per cent (15.6 per cent) to health [12, 30]. Taken as a group, low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) could raise extra over US$ 15 billion/year for health from local sources by increasing the proportion of health expenditure in total government expenditure to 15 per cent [5]. Many developed countries who are near toward achieving universal health coverage allot considerable share of total government expenditure on health [30]. It is therefore incumbent upon many African countries to follow this path so as to aid the provision of and enhance access to reliable healthcare financing, although, in the long-run, relying solely on government budget to finance healthcare services may not be sustainable.
Generally, reliable healthcare financing can be provided through innovative sources of healthcare financing as well as innovative governance in managing health resources [31], and can be accessed by putting social, political, economic and cultural factors into consideration. Innovative sources of healthcare financing refers to committed funding sources for healthcare services, and these funds come from reserved taxes from health hazardous products such as alcohol, tobacco, sugary and salty foods; contributions from social health insurance or dedicated government budget allocation; taxes on air tickets; diaspora bonds (sold to expatriates); levy on foreign exchange transactions; solidarity levies on a range of products and services such as mobile phone calls; social support from social networks such as spouse, children, siblings, friends, association and community members, among many others [5, 31]. The potential to increase social support exists in many countries. If this is well examined and allocated to health, providing and accessing reliable healthcare financing would be greatly enhanced. On the other hand, innovative governance can be referred to as management of funds for healthcare services such that healthcare seekers have access to such funds [31]. These funds may be managed by a statutory body that is independent of government with its own governing body and represented by multi-stakeholders such as community health partnership [12]. Some countries such as Singapore and Hong Kong, among many others, follow this innovative governance and it is helpful in accessing reliable healthcare financing.
This article has conceptualised key concepts from multi-disciplinary stance, explained the need for access to reliable healthcare financing, described access to reliable healthcare financing statistics, discussed various factors influencing reliable healthcare financing and put forward strategies for providing and accessing reliable healthcare financing. One vitally important policy goal in modern healthcare system is equity in access to reliable healthcare financing. Older people require healthcare services more frequently and intensely, but lack of access to reliable healthcare financing in Africa, especially among the vulnerable, poses a challenge. With increasing healthcare costs especially among elderly population in Africa, providing reliable healthcare financing and removing possible barriers to accessing it is crucial for healthy ageing.

The researchers all over the world have been studying fundamental and advanced processes to better understand and thereby predict the genesis and evolution of TCs. This review chapter provides a brief overview on TC climatology, their basic characteristics, movement and intensification, research on structure analysis and prediction of these fascinating storms, with primary emphasis to North Indian Ocean (NIO). The role of ocean and atmosphere in determining the genesis and intensification of TCs is discussed. There are 91 (33) TCs and 113 (50) cases with CE identified in the WNP (ATL). Three CE structural change types are classified as follows: a CE with the inner eyewall dissipated in an eyewall replacement cycle (ERC, 51 and 56% in the WNP and ATL), a CE with the outer eyewall dissipated first and the no eyewall replacement cycle (NRC, 27 and 29% in the WNP and ATL), and a CE structure that is maintained for an extended period (CEM, 23 and 15% in the WNP and ATL). The moat size and outer eyewall width in the WNP (ATL) basin are approximately 20–50% (15–25%) larger in the CEM cases than that in the ERC and NRC cases. Our analysis suggests that the ERC cases are more likely dominated by the internal dynamics, whereas the NRC cases are heavily influenced by the environment condition, and both the internal and environmental conditions are important in the CEM cases. A good correlation of the annual CE TC number and the Oceanic Niño index is found (0.77) in WNP basin, with most of the CE TCs occurring in the warm episodes. In contrast, the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) may not influence on the CE formation in the ATL basin. After the CE formation, however, the unfavorable environment that is created by ENSO may reduce the TC intensity quickly during warm episode. An analysis of regime shift index reveals that the worldwide TC activity experienced four significant abrupt changes during 1960–2014, including (i) an abrupt increase/decrease in the eastern North Pacific (ENP)/western North Pacific (WNP) in the early 1970s, (ii) an abrupt increase in the ENP and WNP in the early 1980s, (iii) an abrupt increase in the North Atlantic and ENP in the middle 1990s, and (iv) an abrupt decrease in the WNP and western South Pacific in the late 1990s. Three of them are identified concurrent with a significant CRS. The possible influence of a CRS on the abrupt change of TC activity in various genesis regions is addressed. We demonstrate that a CRS induced time mean state shift results in a rapid change in the large-scale dynamic and thermodynamic conditions, which substantially contributes to the abrupt change of TC activity in various genesis regions. Maximum temperatures, however, have already registered higher values in different regions of the world, increasing the number, duration and intensity of heat waves. With the increase of maximum temperatures and the increase of significance of heat wave events, reports of mortality episodes due to heat effects have been increasing. According to the information from the Centre for Research on Epidemiology of Disasters (CRED), 5 of the 20 deadliest disasters between 1996 and 2015 were heat wave events. This chapter analyzes heat wave events, the criteria for determining dangerous temperature thresholds, as well as trends already observed, and those expected due to climate change. Biochemistry examines macromolecules - proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates, and lipids – and their building blocks, structures, functions, and interactions. Much of biochemistry is devoted to enzymes, proteins that catalyze chemical reactions, enzyme structures, mechanisms of action and their roles within cells. Biochemistry also studies small signaling molecules, coenzymes, inhibitors, vitamins, and hormones, which play roles in life processes. Biochemical experimentation, besides coopting classical chemistry methods, e.g., chromatography, adopted new techniques, e.g., X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, NMR, radioisotopes, and developed sophisticated microbial genetic tools, e.g., auxotroph mutants and their revertants, fermentation, etc. More recently, biochemistry embraced the ‘big data’ omics systems. Initial biochemical studies have been exclusively analytic: dissecting, purifying, and examining individual components of a biological system; in the apt words of Efraim Racker (1913 –1991), “Don’t waste clean thinking on dirty enzymes.” Today, however, biochemistry is becoming more agglomerative and comprehensive, setting out to integrate and describe entirely particular biological systems. The ‘big data’ metabolomics can define the complement of small molecules, e.g., in a soil or biofilm sample; proteomics can distinguish all the comprising proteins, e.g., serum; metagenomics can identify all the genes in a complex environment, e.g., the bovine rumen. Thus proteomics, an area of research that detects all protein forms expressed in an organism, including splice isoforms and post-translational modifications, is more suitable than genomics for a comprehensive understanding of the biochemical processes that govern life. The most common proteomics applications are currently in the clinical field for the identification, in a variety of biological matrices, of biomarkers for diagnosis and therapeutic intervention of disorders. From the comparison of proteomic profiles of control and disease or different physiological states, which may emerge, changes in protein expression can provide new insights into the roles played by some proteins in human pathologies.
