The challenge of 70–80% total microbial crop yield loss posed by pathogens must be addressed for sustainable potato production in order to properly alleviate the global starvation problem. It aims to produce food while setting an ecological balance to soil fertility. Bio-organic agriculture takes a proactive design as opposed to treating problems after they emerge, so the study was conducted for studying two factors: First: the cultivars (Riviera and Arizona) class A resulting from cultivation of class E imported and cultivated in spring season 2018. The second factor: fertilizer combinations (bio-organic fertilizers compared with traditional chemical fertilizers). Arizona cultivar significantly achieved the highest values, in most of the study parameters compared to Rivera cultivar. Significant differences were observed between the treatments of fertilizer combinations, the treatment (organic fertilizer + bio-fertilizer + 25% chemical fertilizer) significantly achieved the best values compared to the control. Nitrogen capture is by ion exchange of ammonium (NH4+) onto zeolite, a natural low cost mineral which is available worldwide. A coupled process is described in which wastewater ammonium is sorbed to granular zeolite, biologically extracted (desorbed), and used to support Solanum tuberosum growth in fill-and-drain or irrigation cultivation. The system employs separate components to optimize conditions for ammonium sorption (anaerobic ion exchange), desorption (aerobic bioextraction), and cultivation (flexible timing of water and nitrogen supply and nutrient recycle). System architecture provides a low cost and readily implemented system for highly efficient nitrogen capture and incorporation into potato tuber. The nitrogen recycle system enables sustainable local-scale intensification of Solanum tuberosum production and enhanced food security through use of a reliable local nutrient supply. The potato is a good source of dietary energy and micronutrients, and its protein content is high in comparison with other roots and tubers. The cultivated potato is also a concentrated source of vitamin C and some minerals such as potassium and magnesium. Tuber flesh color generally ranges from white to dark yellow in cultivated potato; however, the high potato diversity shows tuber flesh color varies from white to dark purple. Significant improvements can be achieved in terms of yield and quality by the determination of efficient transformation methods. On the other hand, low transformation frequency seriously limits the application of molecular techniques in obtaining transgenic crops. In the present study, the effect of gamma radiation on Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation to the potato was firstly investigated. Sterile seedlings of potato cv. ‘Marabel’, which was grown on Gamborg’s B5 medium in Magenta vessels, were irradiated with different gamma radiation doses (0-control, 40, 80, 120 Gy 60Co). Stem parts having axillary meristems were excised from irradiated seedlings and inoculated by A. tumefaciens (GV2260), which harbors the binary plasmid p35S GUS-INT contains and GUS (β-glucuronidase) gene controlled by 35S promoter (CaMV) and nptII (neomycin phosphotransferase II) gene driven by NOS (nopaline synthase) promoter). Inoculated stem parts having axillary meristems explants were then directly transported to a selection medium containing duocid (500 mg l−1), and kanamycin (100 mg l−1), 4 mg l−1 gibberellic acid, 1 mg l−1 BAP and 0.1 mg l−1 NAA. The adult transgenic plants were detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis. According to the number of transgenic plants determined by PCR analysis, results obtained from explants treated with 40 Gy gamma gave the best results compared to the control (0 Gy) application. The doses over 40 Gy were also found statistically significant compared to the control (0 Gy). It is expected that the protocol described in this study make the transformation studies easier by skipping the stages of ‘co-cultivation’, ‘culturing explants on selection medium’ and ‘recovery of transgenic shoots on selection medium’ not only for potato but also for other crop plants. The aim of this paper is to highlight the development of the technology by researchers and farmers in Vietnam, Philippines, Kenya and Uganda. The development of cultivars with late blight resistance for which no source of tuber seed was available stimulated the creation of using ARC. The demystification of tissue culture by the 1980s greatly aided this development. The key hurdle was to multiply tissue culture plants in beds of growing media and maintain the physiological young stage of the mother plants from which apical cuttings could be repeatedly taken for several months to produce ARC for sale to farmers who demanded the new cultivars (cvs) with all the desirable attributes. The technology was first developed in warmer climates at lower elevations of less than 1,500 meters above mean sea level (mamsl) but gradually it was successfully developed at cooler climates in East Africa. The technology is well established in the highlands of Vietnam and Philippines. The largest family operation is producing over 4 million ARC annually. These high-quality ARC along with improved cvs have markedly improved yields of smallholder farmers, improving food security and increasing their income levels. In Kenya and Uganda there is a rapid adoption of ARC by seed producers, smallholder farmers and youths. The opportunities and challenges offered by digital technologies will be examined and societal impact discussed. The lessons learned will be discussed. Nanoindentation-probed materials’ properties are usually different from their macroscopic counterparts and present different deformation mechanisms [3]. The atomistic models can give important qualitative information for the understanding of experimentally observed complex phenomena; especially, they have the indisputable advantage of analyzing the main physical process and micro-mechanisms (dislocation nucleation and evolution) [4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9]. Many studies have adopted atomistic simulations to probe and understand detailed deformation process and the possible impact factors involved in nanoindentation. For example, Chan et al. [10] studied the size effects of indenter nanohardness using atomistic simulations, and found that nanohardness was inversely proportional to the indenter radius. Imran et al. [11] studied the influence from the indenter velocity and size of the indenter using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations in Ni single crystals. Noreyan et al. [12] carried out MD simulations of nanoindentation of β-SiC to investigate the dependence of the critical depth and pressure for the elastic-to-plastic transition on indentation velocity, tip size, and workpiece temperature. Yaghoobi et al. [13] and Kim et al. [14] conducted MD simulations of nanoindentation on nickel single crystal and nickel bicrystal and discussed the effects of boundary conditions and grain boundary, respectively. Fu et al. [15] and Yuan et al. [16] investigated the effects of twin boundary on hardness, elastic modulus, and dislocation movements during nanoindentation by MD simulations. Fang et al. [17] carried out MD to find that both Young’s modulus and hardness become smaller as temperature increases, and elastic recovery is smaller at higher temperatures during nanoindentation. Wu et al. [18] performed MD simulation to investigate the effects of the temperature, loading and unloading velocities, holding time, and composition of Ni-Al alloys on the nanoimprinting lithography process. Hansson [19], Tsuru et al. [20], and Remington’s et al. [21] studies indicated that the crystallographic orientation strongly influenced the hardness, load for pop-in formation, and mechanisms of plastic deformation using nanoindentation simulated by MD. Zhao et al. [22], Chamani et al. [23], and Chocyk et al. [24] also used MD simulation to study nanoindentation behaviors and microstructure features in metallic multilayers, and the effect of layer thickness on nanoindentation hardness was discussed. Furthermore, few studies also found that the geometry shape of indenter have a strong influence on the dislocation nucleation [25, 26], hardness [26, 27], and Young’s modulus [27]. Generally, in the MD simulation of nanoindentation, the material properties response is influenced by some factors including specimen thickness, crystal orientation, grain size and boundaries, atomic potentials, boundary conditions, temperature, shape and size of indenter, and loading/unloading rate of indentation, etc.
Although the atomic simulation of nanoindentation process and the influence of different factors have been considered comprehensively, most of them mainly consider the dislocation nucleation and deformation mechanisms of specimen, whereas seldom consider the evolutions of and microstructure and stress field of specimen caused by indenter tip geometry. Especially, the internal relationship between the microstructural evolution and the distribution of stress field during nanoindentation has not been analyzed. Since the microstructure features and its evolutions in a localized region are closely related to the stress field in this region, the mechanical properties are strongly dependent on the microstructural features and their evolutions; and it is important to investigate the microstructure evolution and relation with the local stress field, which can be a great help for further understanding of the physical mechanisms during nanoindentation.
The objective of this contribution is to examine how the development of dislocation microstructures, stress distributions, and load-displacement curves are affected by complex stress sites from different shapes of indenters, to determine the relationships between dislocation microstructures and stress distributions during nanoindentation. Moreover, the effect of shapes of indenters on dislocation nucleation, and dislocation movements, stress distribution characteristics during nanoindentation of single crystal nickel are studied in detail.
In this work, an open source code LAMMPS [28] is used to carry out MD simulations and investigate the influences of indenter geometry on dislocation movements and stress distributions for a Ni single crystal nanoindentation. Three indenters with different geometries are employed: spherical, rectangular, and Berkovich indenters. The geometries of the models with three different shapes of indenters are shown in Figure 1. To investigate the variation and distribution characteristics of atomic stress fields during nanoindentation, the atomistic stress definition is employed in this work. In order to compare the load-displacement curves of three different indenters, we gave three indenters penetrating into the same maximum indentation depth of 1.5 nm; the load-displacement curves for three different indenters are shown in Figure 2. As the indenters are −1 nm away from the contact surface of the specimen surface at the initial stage, the load-displacement is close to a straight line, and the load P is zero for three different shapes of indenter before the separation is approximately −0.5 nm. When the distance between the indenter and the contact surface of the specimen is about −0.5~0 nm, the load values are negative because of the repulsive force of the interaction between atoms, and the repulsive force is larger at the larger contact surface. The rectangular indenter has a larger contact surface than the spherical and Berkovich indenters, the repulsive force is biggest for the rectangular indenter and smallest for the Berkovich indenter (see Figure 2). After the indenter contact the surface of the specimen, the load gradually increases with the increase of the penetration depth, the load-displacement curve has a linear dependence, which means that at this stage, the indentation is performed in the linear elastic regime.

For a rectangular indenter, when the load-displacement curve reaches the maximum load, the load keeps fluctuating around a constant value during the further displacement of the indenter, because of the constant cross section of the rectangular indenter; its further penetration into the crystal does not affect significantly the force acting on the indenter. The fluctuations are caused by the relaxation of stresses in the system, such as dislocations migration from the deformed sites. For the spherical indenter, similar to the rectangular indenter case, a quasi-elastic behavior is observed between inflection points; the force acting on the indenter gradually increases with the increase of the penetration depths, but does not last as long in increasing load periods. For a Berkovich indenter, the force acting on the indenter slowly increases with the increase of the penetration depths, the load drop events tend to be small or not noticeable.
Comparison with these three different indenters, the load-displacement curves show different peak loads, elastic-plastic behavior, and load drop events, which are related to a series of transitions of the dislocation structures under the indentation site. To explain this phenomenon, we analyze the local stress distribution and microstructure evolution features of specimen under the indentation site during nanoindentation.
Figure 3 shows atomic stress as a function of atom position along the X direction for different shape indenters during nanoindentation. Here, four different nanoindentation sites are chosen to analyze the atomic stress distributions under the action of different indenters. For rectangular indenter, when indenter does not contact specimen surface [initial site (1) in Figure 3a], the atomic stress values are approximately zero along the X direction for three different shape indenters. When the indenter just contacts specimen surface [just contact site (2) in Figure 3a], near the contact point, the stress value is positive and relatively high. Whereas the specimen surface at a distance from the contact point, the stress value is negative because the atomic interaction force is repulsive. As the indenter gradually penetrates into the specimen, the stress increases and a sudden irregularity appears. When indenter reaches the maximum indentation depth site (3), the stress value at this site is the highest, and a sudden increase occurs at the indenter site. When the indenter is fully unloaded to the initial site (4) in Figure 3a, comparison with the maximum indentation depth, the stress value decreases, but it is still high, which indicates that there are still dislocations in the unloaded specimens and cannot be restored completely. For spherical and Berkovich indenters, a similar trend is found with initially smooth stress distributions, becoming irregular at larger indentation depths. By comparing the stress distributions for three different shape indenters, we found that different indenters have similar stress distribution characteristics at different indentation depth sites, but the stress values are different. The rectangular indenter have the highest stress value (about 6.8 GPa), the spherical indenter is next (about 5.0 GPa), which also has a high stress value (nearly 5.0 GPa) for the Berkovich indenter at the same maximum indentation depth of 1.5 nm. Although the load is the smallest for the Berkovich indenter from the load-displacement curves in Figure 2, the contact area of the indenter is also the smallest, resulting in the stress value that is still high near the indenter. It is noteworthy that for the Berkovich indenter, except for the high stress (nearly 5.0 GPa) near the indenter, the other parts of the specimen are very low, which is also the reason for the stress concentration of the sharp indenter. From Figure 3, we can see that a sudden increase in stress near the indenter for the Berkovich indenter, while for the rectangular and spherical indenters, the stress distributions at low indentation depths are smooth with no sudden irregularities, indicating a fully elastic response. At larger indentation depths, the stress distribution gets more and more irregular with locally very high stresses. The stress irregular distribution and the formation of pop-in are closely related to dislocation activities during nanoindentation.

To understand the microstructure evolution of the specimen during nanoindentation process, the surface and internal microstructure characteristics of specimen for different shape indenters are presented at the maximum indentation depth site and unloading finished site, as shown in Figures 4 and 5, respectively.

Due to the maximum stress and irregular distribution occurring at the maximum indentation depth site, and the dislocation activity is also the most complex at this site, From Figure 4, at the same maximum indentation depth of 1.5 nm, we can clearly see that the dislocation structure is the most complex for the rectangular indenter case, and the next for the spherical indenter case, whereas there are only few dislocations for the Berkovich indenter case. Compared to the dislocation activities of rectangular and spherical indenter cases, an amorphous region directly below the indenter tip is observed in the Berkovich indenter case, which we think that the extremely singular stress field around the indenter tip contributes to this uncommon observation.
When the unloading is finished, the indenter returns to its initial site, the stress cannot be completely restored and there are still a lot of dislocations on the surface of the specimen for the rectangular and spherical indenters cases, and these dislocations move slowly toward the surface and boundary of the specimen during unloading, forming the surface microstructure of the specimen as shown in Figure 5a,b, while in the Berkovich indenter case, there are almost no dislocations on the surface of specimen at unloading finished site (see Figure 5c).
Furthermore, for all three indenters cases at the same maximum indentation depth, the prismatic dislocation loops are mainly observed to nucleate on the {111} planes, as seen the red cycles in Figures 4 and 5, this observation in accordance with the predictions of dislocation theory in a face-centered cubic metal. In the rectangular indenter case, dislocation activities are found to be complex; a prismatic loop originating inside the specimen is observed and glided upward to the indenting surface. In the spherical indenter case, dislocation activities are still relatively complex, a prismatic dislocation loop originating from the surface of specimen is observed and glided downward to the boundary of specimen. In the Berkovich indenter case, dislocation activities are relatively scarce and the defect structure does not change significantly.
MD simulations are performed to investigate the influences of indenter geometry on the dislocation activities and stress distributions during nanoindentation on nickel single crystal. The stress field and dislocation activities induced by the change of indenter shape are analyzed. The major findings are as follows:
Load-displacement curves show different peak loads, elastic-plastic behavior, and load drop events in all three cases. For the rectangular and spherical indenters, the load-displacement curves have a linear dependence, which means a linear elastic regime in indentation process, but the elastic stage produced by the spherical indenter does not last long than that produced by the rectangular indenter. For a Berkovich indenter, there is almost no linear elastic regime, the load drop events tend to be small or not noticeable.
For the rectangular and spherical indenters, the stress distributions at low indentation depths are smooth with no sudden irregularities, indicating a fully elastic response. At larger indentation depths, the stress distribution becomes more and more irregular with locally very high stresses. For the Berkovich indenter, a sudden increase in stress near the indenter, and the other parts of the specimen is very low, which is the reason for the stress concentration of the sharp indenter. These irregular stress distributions and the formations of pop-in occurred are closely related to dislocation activities during nanoindentation.
In all three cases, prismatic dislocation loops are observed to nucleate on the {111} planes, which is in agreement with the predictions of dislocation theory in a face-centered cubic metal. The dislocation activities are the most complex for the rectangular indenter case, and the next for the spherical indenter case, whereas very few dislocations and an amorphous region directly below the indenter tip are observed in the Berkovich indenter case, which is related to the extremely singular stress field around the indenter tip. According to these results, we can conclude that the shapes of indenters have different and significant influences on dislocation activities and stress distributions during nanoindentation.

Over the last year, COVID-19 has been the most widely spoken and researched disease worldwide and, inevitably, other existing pathologies were moved to the background. Amongst these, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) should be highlighted because they still are by far the major contributor to global mortality [1]. CVDs are mainly caused by a blockage that prevents blood from flowing properly, known as atherosclerosis [2, 3]. This is a complex disease that affects medium and large size arteries and consists of a build-up of fatty deposits on the inner walls of the blood vessels, hampering the blood flow through the body [4]. The effect of atherosclerosis can be exacerbated by other diseases that affect blood circulation. Particularly, it has been shown that patients with COVID-19 are prone to develop blood clots on both arteries and veins [5], and thus atherosclerosis may be an even more important factor to global mortality.
Given the prevalence of this disease, atherosclerosis has been intensely studied through both cardiovascular modeling and experimental procedures, as reviewed elsewhere [6, 7, 8, 9]. Nevertheless, with the growing trend of greater computer power, computational approaches have become a valuable, cheaper, and efficient alternative for numerous researchers to predict blood flow behavior [10, 11, 12, 13].
There are two main approaches for simulating blood flow, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and fluid-structure interaction (FSI). In the first one, the arterial wall is assumed as rigid, while in the second one, arteries are considered elastic and the interaction between the blood and the arterial walls are included in the simulation [14]. Although CFD has been widely applied in the study of blood flow under pathological conditions in virtue of lower computational cost [15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20], since FSI provides a more realistic simulation of the human vasculature behavior, it has received increasing interest [21, 22]. Nonetheless, this approach requires significantly more computational effort, and the foremost difficulty is stability and convergence [23, 24].
In order to evaluate if the differences between CFD and FSI results are significant, some researchers have investigated and compared both. A commonly mentioned work was developed by Torii et al. [25]. The authors studied the effects of wall compliance on a stenotic patient-specific coronary artery and found noticeable differences in the instantaneous wall shear stress (WSS) produced by the FSI and rigid wall models. However, the effects of wall compliance on time-averaged WSS (TAWSS) and oscillatory shear index (OSI) were negligible. Malvè et al. [26] performed a similar study in the left coronary artery bifurcation and the conclusions regarding the WSS agreed with the previous study, but they observed significant differences in the TAWSS, especially on its spatial distribution. More recently, another similar study was performed on carotid bifurcation [10]. The authors found that the rigid model overestimates the flow velocity and WSS, but its influence on the TAWSS is minimal.
The differences between the CFD and FSI simulations have thus been the subject of several studies, however, as demonstrated, there is still a debate as to whether it is really necessary to use the most realistic approach, namely in computing WSS dependent variables, and sometimes the findings are contradictory. In this regard, this work presents the comparison of the results of both CFD and FSI simulations in an idealized stenotic coronary artery, with a degree of stenosis of 50%.
The first step necessary to study blood flow consisted in obtaining the three-dimensional geometry of the lumen of an idealized coronary artery as depicted in Figure 1. This geometry was previously adopted in other works by these authors [27, 28].

The FSI simulations were performed using the Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) methodology for the fluid flow. Taking into account that the interface between the lumen and the wall deforms, the equations governing fluid flow have to be expressed in terms of the fluid variables relative to the mesh movement. The ALE-modified Navier-Stokes momentum equation for a viscous incompressible flow is described as follows in Eq. (8) [30, 31]:

Regarding the boundary conditions used in this study, at the inlet, a physiologically accurate pulsatile velocity profile was set, which is depicted in Figure 2. At the outlet, a pressure of 80 mmHg was assumed [17, 36].

The solid and fluid wall-boundaries were defined as a fluid-structure interface, and the inlet/outlet adjacent solid boundaries were fixed in all directions.
For the CFD simulations, the Ansys Fluent software was used which applies the finite-volume discretization method. In this method, the fluid domain is divided into a finite number of control volumes, the conservation equations are applied to each control volume. Then, a system of algebraic equations for the variables is obtained. For the velocity-pressure coupling, the semi-implicit method for the pressure-linked equations (SIMPLE) scheme was used [37].
In FSI simulations, the same finite-volume method is applied in the fluid domain, and the computed forces in Fluent are transferred to the solid domain, through the interface. The finite element method (FEM) is used to solve the governing equations of the solid domain. Then, the computed displacements are transferred back to the fluid domain. This two-way coupling process was repeated until the difference of the displacements and forces for the last two iterations is below 1%. A time step of 0.01 s was used for every simulation.
The formation of atherosclerotic lesions has been widely associated with hemodynamic parameters, such as the wall shear stress (WSS) and its indices, time-averaged wall shear stress (TAWSS), and oscillatory shear index (OSI) [38, 39]. These have been very useful to predict and estimate disturbed flow conditions and the development of local atherosclerotic plaques [27, 40].

The OSI index is the temporal fluctuation of low and high average shear stress during a cardiac cycle (
The formulation developed in this section describes the models that couple the fluid dynamics and the mechanical interaction with the arteries’ wall which is treated as a deformable material. This methodology enables the computation of critical parameters for understanding the hemodynamics in the presence of a stenosis, such as the WSS. The advantages of this method are made evident by comparing it with a simple CFD analysis as detailed in the following section.
Figure 3 illustrates the velocity profiles measured along the center of the artery for both CFD and FSI simulations, in two different phases of the cardiac cycle: systole (0.4 s) and diastole (0.58 s).

Looking at the results in Figure 3, it can be observed that the estimated velocity profiles are similar for both CFD and FSI modeling. Moreover, as expected, during diastole (Figure 3b) the velocities measured are higher than during systole (Figure 3a). This happens because, during systole, the coronary arteries are compressed by the contraction of the myocardium, and so, most of the coronary flow occurs during diastole, where the flow increases. In addition, the maximum velocities in both cases are measured in the stenosis throat (
It is also noted that the velocity is overestimated in the CFD model, particularly at and upstream of the stenosis throat. This is expected because the deformation of the elastic model provides a larger volume for the blood flow through and, as the inflow rate is equal for both models, naturally, the velocities will be higher when a rigid wall is considered. The results indicate the existence of fluid recirculation downstream of the stenosis for both CFD and FSI models, but the recirculation zones are longer in FSI simulations, and this is due to the considerable vessel expansion driven by the pulsatile blood flow.
The magnitude of the WSS predicted by FSI and rigid model along the artery wall for both systole and diastole are compared in Figure 5. In this case, it is observed that the differences between compliant and rigid-wall models are remarkable. In CFD simulations, WSS values estimated in the stenosis throat are approximately twice of those obtained with FSI simulations. This indicates that the WSS distributions were substantially affected by arterial wall compliance, which is in agreement with previous research [25, 26, 41].

Taking into account that WSS-related hemodynamic parameters, such as OSI and TAWSS, play an important role in atherogenesis, these were also evaluated. Figure 6 depicts the TWASS profiles obtained in both CFD and FSI simulations.

The results evidence high values of TAWSS at the stenosis throat, due to flow acceleration and high-velocity gradient near the wall, and, as expected the TAWSS is overestimated by the CFD model as previously explained for WSS distributions. In spite of these observations, the overall TAWSS distributions for the FSI and rigid-wall cases are identical.
Regarding the OSI profiles depicted in Figure 7, it can be observed that for both CFD and FSI simulations, the maximum values (

In general, it was found that for both rigid and compliant models the post-stenotic region presents lower TAWSS and higher OSI values, which constitute risk factors for the incidence and abnormal plaque formation [16, 27].
Figure 8 represents the arterial wall displacement contours of the FSI simulations during systole and diastole.

In the first place, it is noted that the displacements are similar for both cycle phases. This is a consequence of the assumption of the constant outlet pressure, which is a limitation of this work. In this case, the deformations are slightly bigger in the region upstream of the stenosis, and as there is a pressure drop in the throat, the displacements are somewhat lower in the downstream region.
It is also noteworthy that the displacements of the arterial wall are approximately 1.5–2% of the vessel thickness, which is in agreement with the hypothesis that arteries become stiffer with the development of atherosclerosis. Despite this order of magnitude of the displacement values, these still bring considerable differences in the calculations of the velocity and WSS-related variables.
The study of blood flow in stenotic arteries has been made mainly assuming the artery’s wall as rigid, however, in reality, they are naturally elastic. Given that there are some inconsistencies in the literature regarding the comparison between CFD and FSI simulations, in the present work, a comparative study between FSI and CFD modeling was performed in order to investigate the influence of artery compliance on stenotic coronary artery hemodynamics and wall shear stress distribution. The main conclusions obtained from this work are:
Comparing the rigid and compliant models, the velocities predicted differ slightly.
The difference between WSS profiles was remarkable. The CFD simulations overestimate the WSS values, which consequently indicates that when a more realistic WSS estimation is needed, is essential to consider the effect of the atrial wall on blood flow.
Insignificant differences were verified in the TAWSS and OSI measurements.

\\n\\nSubject to the license granted above, the Author and Co-Authors retain patent, trademark and other intellectual property rights to the Work.
\\n\\nAll rights granted to IntechOpen in this Article are assignable, sublicensable or otherwise transferrable to third parties without the specific approval of the Author or Co-Authors.
\\n\\nThe Author, on his/her own behalf and on behalf of the Co-Authors, will not assert any rights under the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 to object to derogatory treatment of the Work as a consequence of IntechOpen's changes to the Work arising from the translation of it, corrections and edits for house style, removal of problematic material and other reasonable edits as determined by IntechOpen.
\\n\\nAUTHOR'S DUTIES
\\n\\nWhen distributing or re-publishing the Work, the Author agrees to credit the Monograph/Compacts as the source of first publication, as well as IntechOpen. The Author guarantees that Co-Authors will also credit the Monograph/Compacts as the source of first publication, as well as IntechOpen, when they are distributing or re-publishing the Work.
\\n\\nThe Author agrees to:
\\n\\nThe Author will be held responsible for the payment of the agreed Open Access Publishing Fee before the completion of the project (Monograph/Compacts publication).
\\n\\nAll payments shall be due 30 days from the date of issue of the invoice. The Author or whoever is paying on behalf of the Author and Co-Authors will bear all banking and similar charges incurred.
\\n\\nThe Author shall obtain in writing all consents necessary for the reproduction of any material in which a third-party right exists, including quotations, photographs and illustrations, in all editions of the Work worldwide for the full term of the above licenses, and shall provide to IntechOpen, at its request, the original copies of such consents for inspection or the photocopies of such consents.
\\n\\nThe Author shall obtain written informed consent for publication from those who might recognize themselves or be identified by others, for example from case reports or photographs.
\\n\\nThe Author shall respect confidentiality during and after the termination of this Agreement. The information contained in all correspondence and documents as part of the publishing activity between IntechOpen and the Author and Co-Authors are confidential and are intended only for the recipients. The contents of any communication may not be disclosed publicly and are not intended for unauthorized use or distribution. Any use, disclosure, copying, or distribution is prohibited and may be unlawful.
\\n\\nAUTHOR'S WARRANTY
\\n\\nThe Author and Co-Authors confirm and warrant that the Work does not and will not breach any applicable law or the rights of any third party and, specifically, that the Work contains no matter that is defamatory or that infringes any literary or proprietary rights, intellectual property rights, or any rights of privacy.
\\n\\nThe Author and Co-Authors confirm that: (i) the Work is their original work and is not copied wholly or substantially from any other work or material or any other source; (ii) the Work has not been formally published in any other peer-reviewed journal or in a book or edited collection, and is not under consideration for any such publication; (iii) Authors and any applicable Co-Authors are qualifying persons under section 154 of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988; (iv) Authors and any applicable Co-Authors have not assigned, and will not during the term of this Publication Agreement purport to assign, any of the rights granted to IntechOpen under this Publication Agreement; and (v) the rights granted by this Publication Agreement are free from any security interest, option, mortgage, charge or lien.
\\n\\nThe Author and Co-Authors also confirm and warrant that: (i) he/she has the power to enter into this Publication Agreement on his or her own behalf and on behalf of each Co-Author; and (ii) has the necessary rights and/or title in and to the Work to grant IntechOpen, on behalf of themselves and any Co-Author, the rights and licences in this Publication Agreement. If the Work was prepared jointly by the Author and Co-Authors, the Author confirms that: (i) all Co-Authors agree to the submission, license and publication of the Work on the terms of this Publication Agreement; and (ii) the Author has the authority to enter into this biding Publication Agreement on behalf of each Co-Author. The Author shall: (i) ensure each Co-Author complies with all relevant provisions of this Publication Agreement, including those relating to confidentiality, performance and standards, as if a party to this Publication Agreement; and (ii) remain primarily liable for all acts and/or omissions of each Co-Author.
\\n\\nThe Author agrees to indemnify IntechOpen harmless against all liabilities, costs, expenses, damages and losses, as well as all reasonable legal costs and expenses suffered or incurred by IntechOpen arising out of, or in connection with, any breach of the agreed confirmations and warranties. This indemnity shall not apply in a situation in which a claim results from IntechOpen's negligence or willful misconduct.
\\n\\nNothing in this Publication Agreement shall have the effect of excluding or limiting any liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence or any other liability that cannot be excluded or limited by applicable law.
\\n\\nTERMINATION
\\n\\nIntechOpen has the right to terminate this Publication Agreement for quality, program, technical or other reasons with immediate effect, including without limitation (i) if the Author and/or any Co-Author commits a material breach of this Publication Agreement; (ii) if the Author and/or any Co-Author (being a private individual) is the subject of a bankruptcy petition, application or order; or (iii) if the Author and/or any Co-Author (as a corporate entity) commences negotiations with all or any class of its creditors with a view to rescheduling any of its debts, or makes a proposal for, or enters into, any compromise or arrangement with any of its creditors.
\\n\\nIn the event of termination, IntechOpen will notify the Author of the decision in writing.
\\n\\nIntechOpen’s DUTIES AND RIGHTS
\\n\\nUnless prevented from doing so by events beyond its reasonable control, IntechOpen, at its discretion, agrees to publish the Work attributing it to the Author and Co-Authors.
\\n\\nUnless prevented from doing so by events beyond its reasonable control, IntechOpen agrees to provide publishing services which include: managing editing (editorial and publishing process coordination, Author assistance); publishing software technology; language copyediting; typesetting; online publishing; hosting and web management; and abstracting and indexing services.
\\n\\nIntechOpen agrees to offer free online access to readers and use reasonable efforts to promote the Publication to relevant audiences.
\\n\\nIntechOpen is granted the authority to enforce the rights from this Publication Agreement on behalf of the Author and Co-Authors against third parties, for example in cases of plagiarism or copyright infringements. In respect of any such infringement or suspected infringement of the copyright in the Work, IntechOpen shall have absolute discretion in addressing any such infringement that is likely to affect IntechOpen's rights under this Publication Agreement, including issuing and conducting proceedings against the suspected infringer.
\\n\\nIntechOpen has the right to include/use the Author and Co-Authors names and likeness in connection with scientific dissemination, retrieval, archiving, web hosting and promotion and marketing of the Work and has the right to contact the Author and Co-Authors until the Work is publicly available on any platform owned and/or operated by IntechOpen.
\\n\\nMISCELLANEOUS
\\n\\nFurther Assurance: The Author shall ensure that any relevant third party, including any Co-Author, shall execute and deliver whatever further documents or deeds and perform such acts as IntechOpen reasonably requires from time to time for the purpose of giving IntechOpen the full benefit of the provisions of this Publication Agreement.
\\n\\nThird Party Rights: A person who is not a party to this Publication Agreement may not enforce any of its provisions under the Contracts (Rights of Third Parties) Act 1999.
\\n\\nEntire Agreement: This Publication Agreement constitutes the entire agreement between the parties in relation to its subject matter. It replaces all prior agreements, draft agreements, arrangements, collateral warranties, collateral contracts, statements, assurances, representations and undertakings of any nature made by, or on behalf of, the parties, whether oral or written, in relation to that subject matter. Each party acknowledges that in entering into this Publication Agreement it has not relied upon any oral or written statements, collateral or other warranties, assurances, representations or undertakings which were made by or on behalf of the other party in relation to the subject matter of this Publication Agreement at any time before its signature (known as the "Pre-Contractual Statements"), other than those which are set out in this Publication Agreement. Each party hereby waives all rights and remedies which might otherwise be available to it in relation to such Pre-Contractual Statements. Nothing in this clause shall exclude or restrict the liability of either party arising out of any fraudulent pre-contract misrepresentation or concealment.
\\n\\nWaiver: No failure or delay by a party to exercise any right or remedy provided under this Publication Agreement or by law shall constitute a waiver of that or any other right or remedy, nor shall it preclude or restrict the further exercise of that or any other right or remedy. No single or partial exercise of such right or remedy shall preclude or restrict the further exercise of that or any other right or remedy.
\\n\\nVariation: No variation of this Publication Agreement shall have effect unless it is in writing and signed by the parties, or their duly authorized representatives.
\\n\\nSeverance: If any provision, or part-provision, of this Publication Agreement is, or becomes invalid, illegal or unenforceable, it shall be deemed modified to the minimum extent necessary to make it valid, legal and enforceable. If such modification is not possible, the relevant provision or part-provision shall be deemed deleted. Any modification to, or deletion of, a provision or part-provision under this clause shall not affect the validity and enforceability of the rest of this Publication Agreement.
\\n\\nNo partnership: Nothing in this Publication Agreement is intended to, or shall be deemed to, establish or create any partnership or joint venture or the relationship of principal and agent or employer and employee between IntechOpen and the Author or any Co-Author, nor authorize any party to make or enter into any commitments for, or on behalf of, any other party.
\\n\\nGoverning law: This Publication Agreement and any dispute or claim, including non-contractual disputes or claims arising out of, or in connection with it, or its subject matter or formation, shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the law of England and Wales. The parties submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the English courts to settle any dispute or claim arising out of, or in connection with, this Publication Agreement, including any non-contractual disputes or claims.

\n\nSubject to the license granted above, copyright in the Work and all versions of it created during IntechOpen's editing process, including all published versions, is retained by the Author and any Co-Authors.

Nevertheless, waste disposal has generated about 20–30% of total of solid volume in landfills besides prejudicing flora and fauna by uncontrolled disposal. The development of biodegradable polymers aims to solve this problem, considering that in 2012, bio-plastics market was evaluated in 1.4 million tons produced and in 2017 attained 6.2 million tons. Biodegradable polymers as poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) are thermoplastics which can be processed using the most conventional polymer processing methods. PLA is high in strength and modulus but brittle, while PBAT is flexible and tough. In order to reduce interfacial tension exhibited by PLA/PBAT blends, it was used as compatibilizing agent 5 phr of PLA previously gamma-radiated at 150 kGy. Ionizing radiation induces compatibilization by free radicals, improving the dispersion and adhesion of blend phases, without using chemical additives and at room temperature. As a reinforcement agent, calcium carbonate from avian eggshell waste was used, at 10 ph of micro particles, 125 μm. Admixtures were further processed in a single-screw extruder, using CO2 as physical blowing agent (PBA). He has received many awards and honors in India and abroad including various Young Scientist Awards, BBSRC India Partnering Award, and Dr. JC Bose National Award of Department of Biotechnology, Min. of Science and Technology, Govt. of India. Dr. Saxena is a fellow of various international societies/academies including the Royal College of Pathologists, United Kingdom; Royal Society of Medicine, London; Royal Society of Biology, United Kingdom; Royal Society of Chemistry, London; and Academy of Translational Medicine Professionals, Austria. He was named a Global Leader in Science by The Scientist. Travieso-González received his MSc degree in Telecommunication Engineering at Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), Spain in 1997, and his Ph.D. degree in 2002 at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC-Spain). He is a full professor of signal processing and pattern recognition and is head of the Signals and Communications Department at ULPGC, teaching from 2001 on subjects on signal processing and learning theory. His research lines are biometrics, biomedical signals and images, data mining, classification system, signal and image processing, machine learning, and environmental intelligence. He has researched in 52 international and Spanish research projects, some of them as head researcher. He is co-author of 4 books, co-editor of 27 proceedings books, guest editor for 8 JCR-ISI international journals, and up to 24 book chapters. He has over 450 papers published in international journals and conferences (81 of them indexed on JCR – ISI - Web of Science). He has published seven patents in the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office. He has been a supervisor on 8 Ph.D. theses (11 more are under supervision), and 130 master theses. He is the founder of The IEEE IWOBI conference series and the president of its Steering Committee, as well as the founder of both the InnoEducaTIC and APPIS conference series. He is an evaluator of project proposals for the European Union (H2020), Medical Research Council (MRC, UK), Spanish Government (ANECA, Spain), Research National Agency (ANR, France), DAAD (Germany), Argentinian Government, and the Colombian Institutions. He has been a reviewer in different indexed international journals (<70) and conferences (<250) since 2001. He has been a member of the IASTED Technical Committee on Image Processing from 2007 and a member of the IASTED Technical Committee on Artificial Intelligence and Expert Systems from 2011. \n\nHe has held the general chair position for the following: ACM-APPIS (2020, 2021), IEEE-IWOBI (2019, 2020 and 2020), A PPIS (2018, 2019), IEEE-IWOBI (2014, 2015, 2017, 2018), InnoEducaTIC (2014, 2017), IEEE-INES (2013), NoLISP (2011), JRBP (2012), and IEEE-ICCST (2005)\n\nHe is an associate editor of the Computational Intelligence and Neuroscience Journal (Hindawi – Q2 JCR-ISI). He was vice dean from 2004 to 2010 in the Higher Technical School of Telecommunication Engineers at ULPGC and the vice dean of Graduate and Postgraduate Studies from March 2013 to November 2017.
