On the other hand, agricultural productivity is not increasing at a required rate to keep up with the food demand. The reasons for this are water shortages, depleting soil fertility and mainly various abiotic stresses. The fast pace at which developments and novel findings that are recently taking place in the cutting edge areas of molecular biology and basic genetics, have reinforced and augmented the efficiency of science outputs in dealing with plant abiotic stresses. In depth understanding of the stresses and their effects on plants is of paramount importance to evolve effective strategies to counter them. This book is broadly dived into sections on the stresses, their mechanisms and tolerance, genetics and adaptation, and focuses on the mechanic aspects in addition to touching some adaptation features. The chief objective of the book hence is to deliver state of the art information for comprehending the nature of abiotic stress in plants. Then the nanomaterial’s such as the carbon nanotubes (CNTs), with unique electrical, mechanical, and surface properties, have captured the attention and aroused the interest of many scientists, since CNTs were discovered by Iijima in 1991 and up to now appear well suited as a biomaterial [2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7]. CNTs are substances with cylindrical structure of about 1 nm diameter and 1–10 m length, consisting of only carbon atoms. In general, CNTs contain single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs).
SWCNTs are viewed microscopically as rolled-up structures of single sheets of graphene and individual carbon structures, approximately 1 nm in diameter and up to a millimeter or more in length, and MWCNTs are similar to hollow graphite fibers, except that they have a much higher degree of structural perfection, which are having a diameter of 10–200 nm [8, 9, 10, 11]. Lu and Tsai investigated the load transfer efficiency in double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs, a hollow cylindrical structure, which contains two concentric graphene layers) using multiscale finite element modeling, and the results showed that increasing of CNTs’ length can effectively improve the load transfer efficiency in the outermost layers, while the DWCNTs with incremental covalent exhibit increasing load transfer efficiency in the inner layer. Besides, compared with single walled, the double walled nanotubes have decreased potential of load transfer efficiency [12].
Several studies proved increase mechanical properties of CNTs-based reinforced composites by the adding of carbon nanotubes (Figure 1). CNTs reinforced composites have been investigated thoroughly for numerous aspects of life and biomedical applications. The review introduced fabrication of CNTs reinforced composites, CNTs reinforced with ceramic and metal matrix composites their biocompatibility (in vivo), cell experiments (in vitro) and mechanical properties.
The late Nobel prize winning physicist Richard P. Feynman in 1959 speculated the potential of nano size devices as early as 1959. In his historic lecture in 1959, he concluded saying, “this is a development which I think cannot be avoided” [13].
Inspite of the better understanding and use of chemistry and materials, recent developments in physical properties, no material has been found to be ideal for any kind of dental application [14]. Silver amalgam, as a dental restorative material has been used for more than a century, but for the toxicity and esthetics which has been of major concern for many many years [15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20]. In contrast the composite restorative materials have very good esthetics, and are very technique sensitive [21]. Nature has arranged complex biominerals in the best possible way from the micro to the nano-scale and no one can yet combine biological and physical properties to get ideal structures [22].
The practical applications in dentistry has various approaches [23, 24]. Broadly, two key approaches in nanotechnology are present for creating smaller or better materials. One being the top-down and the other is bottom-up. Top-down approach is based on solid-state processing of materials. The “top-down” approaches are used to fabricate functional structures at micro and nanoscales such as chemical vapor deposition (CVD), monolithic processing, wet and plasma etching [25]. These approaches are used in electronics industry as well as for coatings of medical implants and stent using chemical vapour deposition technology for increased blood flow [26].
The “bottom-up” approach entangles the fabrication of materials via edifice up particles by harvesting atomic elements. Bottom-up processing is based on extremely organized chemical synthesis and growth of materials [27] which occurs in repairing of cells, tissues or organ systems and protein synthesis as well.
Nanodentistry will make possible the maintenance of near-perfect oral health through the use of nanomaterials, biotechnology, including tissue engineering, and nanorobotics. Oral health and disease trends may change the focus on specific diagnostic and treatment modalities [28, 29].
Dentin hypersensitivity is due to changes in pressure transmitted hydrodynamically to the pulp. Hence, teeth having hypersensitivity have eight times increased surface density of dentinal tubules and tubules with diameters twice as large than nonsensitive teeth. Dental nanorobots could precisely and selectively obstruct selected tubules in minutes using native biological materials.
A colloidal suspension with millions of active analgesic micron-size dental robots will be introduced in the gums of the patient. On coming in contact with the surface of tooth or mucosa, the ambulating nanorobots enter the pulp via the gingival sulcus, lamina propria, and dentinal tubules. Once introduced in the pulp, the dentist commands analgesic dental robots to stop all sensitivity and reactions in any specific tooth that needs treatment. The dentist orders the nanorobots to restore all sensation, after finishing all the oral treatments to relinquish control of nerve traffic, and to egress from the tooth by similar pathways used for ingress.
Orthodontic nanorobots could directly stimulate and manipulate the periodontal tissues, leading to rapid and painless tooth straightening, rotating, and vertical repositioning in few hours. Nanotechnology derived orthodontic wire is a new and advanced stainless steel wire which has the following properties (a) ultra-high strength (b) good deformability (c) corrosion resistance (d) good surface finish.
The introduction of Nanofillers into Polyvinylsiloxanes yields a siloxane impression material with properties superior to conventional impression materials.
Advantages (a) Better flow (b) Improved hydrophilic properties leading to fewer voids at margin and better model pouring (c) Enhanced detail precision.
Nanosolutions: These are unique, dispersible nanoparticles with superior properties that can be produced from nanosolutions. This can be made use of dentin bonding agents (AdperTM) because of better dentin bond strength and better performance.
Nanorobotic dentifrice [dentifrobots]: subocclusal nanorobotic dentifrice present in tooth paste or mouthwash could monitor all supragingival and subgingival surfaces, metabolizing the organic matter which is trapped into odorless and harmless vapors required for continuous calculus debridement. These invisibly small dentifrobots [1–10 μm], crawling at 1–10 μm/s are purely mechanical devices which are inexpensive. They would safely get deactivated themselves when swallowed and would be programmed with strict occlusal avoidance protocol.
Dental durability and cosmetics: durability of the tooth along with aesthetics may be improved by replacing layers of upper enamel with pure sapphire and diamond embedded carbon nanotubes as they are more fracture resistant as nanostructured composites.
Photosensitizers and carriers: quantum dots can be used as photosensitizers and carriers as they are bound to bind to the antibody present on the surface of the target cell. They can give rise to reactive oxygen species and when stimulated by UV light and thus will be lethal to the target cell.

Pulp stem cells are purified in the lab and grown in sheets on scaffolds composed of nanofibers of biodegradable collagen type I or fibronectin used for pulp regeneration [32, 33]. Self-assembling polypeptide hydrogels have been used for pulp tissue regeneration with the formation of a nanofiber mesh for supporting the growing cells [34]. Puramatrix proven to enhance cell growth contains amino acids repeats of alanine, arginine and aspartate [35]. Natural silk based nanomaterials are being used for various tissue regeneration applications [36]. Injectable self-assembly collagen I scaffold containing exfoliated teeth stem cells led to the formation of pulp like tissue and functional odontoblasts [37]. Collagen type I is found in the form of nanofibers in dentin (~80–90% of organic matrix) and bone with abundant fibrous protein [38]. Odontogenic differentiation and mineralization was promoted in the presence of type I collagen scaffolds [39, 40].
Nanomedicine is the application of nanotechnology (the engineering of tiny machines) to the prevention and treatment of disease in the human body. This evolving discipline has the potential to dramatically change medical science.
Nanorobots are expected to circulate in the vascular system and send out signals when imbalances appear in the circulatory and lymphatic system. To monitor brain activity fixed nanomachines could be inserted in the nervous system of the human body. Latest nanomedical heart trackers are present in the major hospitals to accurately track and treat the heart beat and its downfalls as needed in the body [41]. The present and potential diagnostic uses is large being fullerene-based sensors, imaging (cellular, etc.), monitoring, lab on a chip, nanosensors, scanning probe microscopy, protein microarrays intracellular devices, intracellular biocomputers and intracellular sensors/reporters, endoscopic robots and microscopes.
Protein and peptide molecules form the functional units of cells. Their molecular derangements lead to many illnesses. Targeted or controlled delivery of these molecules using nano particles and dendrimers is an emerging field called nano bio pharmaceutics.
Drug delivery is based on developing nanoscale molecules to improve drug bioavailability. Nanomedicine based tools and devices are being developed for imaging. By the use of nanoparticle contrast agents, images such as ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have improved distribution and contrast [42]. Triggered response is one way for drug molecules to be used more efficiently. The strength of drug delivery systems is their ability to alter the bio distribution and pharmacokinetics of the drug. Drugs are placed in the body and only activate on encountering a particular signal. For example, a drug with poor solubility will be replaced by a drug delivery system where both hydrophilic and hydrophobic environments exist thus improving its solubility.
The small size of nanoparticles enhances their use in oncology. Quantum dots (nanoparticles with quantum confinement properties, such as size-tunable light emission), when used in conjunction with MRI, produces exceptional images of tumor sites [43]. Diagnosis of cancer at early stages can be detected from a few drops of the patient’s blood by using sensor test chips containing thousands of nanowires, able to detect proteins and other biomarkers left behind by cancer cells [44]. Prof. Jennifer West has demonstrated the use of 120 nm diameter nanoshells coated with gold to kill cancer tumors in mice. By irradiating the area of the tumor with an infrared laser, which passes through flesh without heating it, the gold is heated sufficiently to cause death of the cancer cells [45].
With the help of gold-coated nano shells, infrared laser and flesh welder bloodless surgery can be done with greater efficiency [46].
BrachySil™ (Sivida, Australia) delivers 32P, clinical trial.

Non-viral gene delivery systems.
Direct cell and tissue repair can be done using molecular machines, however by using drugs and surgery only tissues can repair themselves. Access to cells by inserting needles into cells by molecular machines without killing them is possible [47].
Currently the most significant concerns involve risk assessment, risk management and risk communication of ENMs in clinical trials [48]. Implanting a computing chip in humans raises many ethical concerns. The chip can diagnose diseases and can also analyze our DNA to determine the diseases to which one may be susceptible to in later stages. Ethical issues concerning a patient’s right-to know, right-not-to-know and the duty-to-know arise [49]. Increase in the current level of accuracy and efficiency of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures by augmenting the targeting and distribution by nanoparticles, the dangers of nanotoxicity becomes a paramount next step in better understanding of their medical needs [50].
Multiwalled carbon nanotubes led to asbestos like effects on the mesothelium due to high doses of intracavitary injection in rodents. Whether the inhalation of MWCNT will translocate to sensitive mesothelial sites has not been answered yet [51]. It will also be important to know their adverse effects, if any, in pediatric, geriatric and differing pathophysiological conditions like pregnancy, lactation, congestive heart failure, uremia, etc. (Figure 1).
CNTs-based reinforced composites
Nanomedicine and nanodentistry will have an impact on many medical applications. The usefulness of these are not only therapeutic but also diagnostic. Development of applications of nanomedicine and nanodentistry is very complex and needs an integrated approach of all stakeholders. Future applications of nanodentistry will include nanorobotics, carbon nanotubes, nanocomposites whereas nanomedicine will include activity monitors, biochips, insulin pumps, needle less injectors, medical flow sensors and blood pressure, glucose monitoring devices and drug injecting systems. What nanomedicine and nanodentistry will be able to achieve in the future is beyond current imagination. However, it will be a tough task to handle the ethical issues which will be arising with the same pace.
Authors have no ‘conflict of interest’ declaration.
In 2008, the white paper for peer-to-peer payments was published by Satoshi-Nakamoto [1]. Various blockchains have been developed since then and are always discussed as
As Vitalik Buterin described in 2014, blockchains can also serve as decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) [2]. DAO refers to an association of like-minded members who control and manage it. A DAO is based on a set of rules in which the basic rules of the organization and its financial management are defined. Once this set of rules—for example, in the form of a smart contract via a blockchain—has been made accessible to members, these publicly visible rules can no longer be changed, except by a vote of the members [2].
A DAO is, therefore, not controlled by a central authority, but by the member collective itself. It can, for example, be a donation organization in which the donors can vote on to whom the collected sum should be donated. Voting can be viewed in a similar way to stock corporations. The weighting of the votes depends on the amount of money previously paid in. The voting can be executed via the so-called governance tokens [3].
The goal of this thesis is the investigation and implementation of a multiplayer game based on the DAO principle. The main idea is that a collective of players makes decisions together. Using the example of “Connect Four,” in which two teams with any number of players compete against each other, the next move of each team is decided democratically by voting using governance tokens.
To add excitement to the game, the winning team should be rewarded with the deposits (governance tokens) of the opposing team at the end of a match. A key aspect to consider when implementing such a community game is that a game is chosen where all the moves can be made public and there is no need for additional encryption of data on the blockchain. This is deliberately chosen so that the focus of this work is only on the implementation of the community game and more complex problems regarding data encryption are avoided, which could affect the implementation of the project in terms of time or even prevent it. The game “Connect Four” fulfills these requirements and is, therefore, a suitable candidate for this elaboration. Another challenge is to implement the game in a completely decentralized way so that all the calculations, data transformations, and game moves can be publicly viewed via the blockchain at any time, thus ruling out any manipulation of the game flow. Another key aspect to consider when implementing such a community game is whether both the specific nature of decision-making and the use of a blockchain can lead to unforeseen problems in the game flow for the participating players. Therefore, the research question can be described as follows:
To answer this question, a
This work is divided into four parts. In addition to related work and the architecture of the decentralized application (in short: dApp), the implementation and a subsequent evaluation are described. There, the usability of the application is evaluated and discussed by using a questionnaire. A conclusion and an outlook conclude this work.
Games based on blockchains, such as Bitcoin or Ethereum, are already popular today and do not represent a novelty. They are particularly popular because their rules are stored within the blockchain and are, therefore, transparent for all the participants [5]. There is a distinction between fully decentralized implemented games and a traditional game design approach paired with blockchain technology [6]. The former is characterized by a simple game structure, with clear rules and low complexity. An example is the game
As described earlier, the DAO approach is not a fundamental innovation within the blockchain environment (see Section 1). For example, Soichiro Takagi describes numerous use cases for DAOs in 2017. Among them are approaches such as
At the time of writing, no references to a game that uses the DAO principle as a central game feature could be found; therefore, it can be assumed that the influence of the DAO principle on usability has not been investigated so far. Thus, this relation represents an innovation within blockchain games as well as a clear differentiation from other papers.
For the implementation of a DAO game based on a blockchain, several components are needed, which are described below. As shown in Figure 1, the user first communicates with a web server to obtain the required static files that provide the presentation logic in the browser. The business logic is split into three different dApps on the Waves blockchain.
Architecture of the DAO game.
All the files implementing the presentational logic are delivered via a static web server. To maintain a fully decentralized approach, no business logic is implemented at this point.
This strategy allows a fully decentralized implementation of the game, but can be extended for new platforms, such as iOS or Android, if needed.
Since low transaction fees and fast processing speed of business logic are the primary concerns when implementing a multiplayer game, the Waves blockchain was chosen, which offers significantly shorter confirmation times and lower transaction fees than conventional blockchains, such as Ethereum or Bitcoin.4
Each dApp may have a maximum script complexity of 10,000 and script size of 32,768 bytes.5 For this reason, the business logic was divided into three different dApps.
The Main dApp acts as a unified interface and persistent data store. To perform an action within the game, players must communicate directly with this dApp. Each time the dApp is called, various checks are performed to verify the correctness of the request.
The Voting dApp is called exclusively from the Main dApp and calculates the final result of the current round based on all votes that have been submitted. If there is no clear result, the first vote submitted will be used to decide which move will be made for the respective team.
The result of the calculation is then transferred and written to the data storage of the Main dApp.
The Inspector dApp is called by the Main dApp at each completed turn and then checks whether a team has fulfilled all criteria for a win or whether a draw has occurred. The result is also transferred and written to the Main dApp’s data store.
Owing to the decentralized implementation of the game, different problems arise within the individual components. This section will give a general overview of the implementation and will address particular problems that occurred during the implementation.
The following section will mainly address the frameworks used for implementing the user interface (see Figure 2).
User interface.
Since a game based on modern browser technologies requires a very dynamic display logic, the Next.js framework was used for this specific use case. With the aid of this framework, the implementation of very dynamic and interaction-intensive user interfaces can be greatly simplified. To ensure that each player always has a current state, the current game state is regularly queried via the Waves Node REST API and transferred to the player’s local cache. Next.js displays the current game board based on this data.
For the interaction of the individual players with the game, the library “waves-transactions” is used. With the help of this library, transactions to the Waves blockchain can be created and signed in the browser.
This section covers the specifics of the Waves blockchain. A special focus lies on the problems of the individual dApps. It is noticeable that there were frequent problems with control structures such as loops during the implementation. Since Ride is not Turing-complete, some steps within the game logic had to be implemented in a completely different way. The following section will give an insight into some of these problems.
Since there is no way to perform event- or time-based actions on a blockchain, a mechanism had to be developed to determine if a team had exceeded the maximum allowed round duration.
To do this, each transaction, regardless of which team it came from, was checked to see if the team currently taking its turn had taken longer than the current block height + 5 blocks (1 minute per block). If this is the case, the current team’s turn will automatically end as soon as a player from the other team makes a new transaction. The user interface calculates these values in real time and automatically indicates to the waiting team that it may now vote again if the other team timed out.
The Voting dApp must calculate how many times a single field has been voted for each players submitted vote. This is problematic because Ride does not implement a native counting function.
First, all votes are collected in a single entry in the data store with the following format: “walletId_fieldNumber, walletId_fieldNumber.” After all players have voted, the previously generated entry is split by the delimiters “,” and “_” into a new list containing only the voted field numbers. Up to this point, it has not been necessary to use a loop, since Ride provides native functions for splitting strings. Since the new list can only be as large as the number of players, the FOLD function can be used to determine which field got the most votes. This value is returned to the Main dApp after the calculation.
The inspector must check at each completed turn whether a team has won the game or whether it has come to a draw. In doing so, he must examine the entire board for the previously defined victory conditions. As soon as there is a sequence of four game tokens from the same team on the board, the team has won the game.
To realize this requirement, the entire board is split into a multidimensional array (seven rows, six columns). This array is then traversed with two nested FOLD functions, and it is checked on a horizontal, vertical, and diagonal levels whether a team has won or whether there is a draw. For this purpose, each of these conditions is checked using index queries. By using index queries, the need for an algorithm that is entirely based on loops is eliminated and, thus, can be implemented in Ride.
This section presents the evaluation strategy and explains how it will be conducted. Subsequently, the research results are presented and discussed.
Typically, the usability for human-technology interaction is described by means of ISO 9241-11 [10]. Since this is difficult or poorly measurable, the system usability scale questionnaire (short
Each participant was asked to state whether the DAO principle had an impact on usability and if so, what that impact was. For this purpose, a mixture of quantitative (Likert scale of the SUS questionnaire incl. SUS score) and qualitative (free text fields for a question) questions had to be answered within the questionnaire.
After all participants had completed the questionnaire, the questionnaire was evaluated descriptively in order to be able to measure the influence. The qualitative statements were evaluated and presented by a quantitative content analysis (SUS score for usability classification).
The results of this survey will be discussed within the upcoming sections after the successful completion of the statistical analysis.
The following section will describe, evaluate, and then discuss the results of the evaluation. In the period from January 31, 2022 to February 13, 2022, the questionnaire was answered. Within this period, 42 persons answered the questionnaire, of which 34 were male and 8 were female. Twenty-seven of the 42 respondents were under the age of 30; the remaining were evenly distributed up to the age of 64. Approximately 83% of the respondents had at least a general qualification for university entrance (e.g., A-level).
The SUS score is determined from all the answers given in the questionnaire and is intended to provide a quick overview on the usability of the project. Its reliability, measured in the Cronbach’s alpha, is 0.92 (out of a maximum of 1). This means that the questionnaire has a very high reliability and, thus, fulfills one of the most important quality criteria that a questionnaire must fulfill [11, 13]. Questions are asked about the ease of use, the feeling of security, the complexity of the application, and the need for any support during use. The SUS score is a number that can have a value between 0 and 100. Basically, the higher this value, the better the usability. As shown in Figure 3, all values smaller than 50 are to be considered as
SUS score.
Thirty-four people used the free text fields to indicate what could be improved. It is striking that 16 of the 42 people found the long delay after placing a vote to be annoying. Communication within the teams (two out of 42) and the design (seven out of 42) and the cryptic user names (six out of 42) were also rated as poor. Three people found playing in teams to be not good and would have liked to play on their own.
As the results show, the DAO concept can be integrated very well into games that are based on a blockchain. Thus, the application was able to achieve an SUS score of 70 points and can be considered good, as already described. The score is comparable to the Facebook app for iOS from 2018, as described in [14]. Many of the respondents stated that the collaborative decision-making approach had been the most exciting and fun aspect.
The evaluation of the free text fields shows that there is potential for improving usability in the way communication is handled within the teams. A chat could satisfy this need and make the game more fun. Likewise, assigning user names would simplify the identification of players. As a result, the SUS score can be sustainably improved after the implementation of these functions. Since the game has been implemented almost entirely in a decentralized manner, as described in Sections 3 and 4, the long waiting times after a vote has been submitted cannot be prevented or can only be prevented with difficulty. This is because the performance of the game correlates with the performance of the blockchain.
When evaluating this application, it should always be kept in mind that it is a minimum viable product (MVP) whose goal has only been to investigate the DAO concept with regard to the usability of a game.
Moreover, as described in Section 5.1, the population of respondents consisted of known individuals. Similarly, the number of respondents was so small, 42, that the representativeness of the quantitative survey could be questioned. In addition to the size of the population, the homogeneity of the group may also have played a role. As described, it consisted mostly of people who were under the age of 30 and male. All these factors could have contributed to the good SUS score. Thus, it is not possible to clearly assess whether the created application could achieve an SUS score of 70 with a different constellation of respondents.
Based on the previously described sections, both a conclusion and an outlook are now presented. A description is given of how the application could be further developed and also which difficulties might have to be expected.
The goal of this work was to create a blockchain-based game that uses the DAO concept as a central element. The aim was to investigate the influence of the DAO concept on the usability of the game. For this purpose, the game was implemented in a fully decentralized way using the Waves blockchain. Based on a survey of the players, it was found that the DAO concept has an influence on usability that can be considered positive. The game achieved an SUS score of 70 points, which can be classified as
The causal relationship of the DAO concept on the usability of games was answered within this manuscript. The game selected for this purpose has the property that all information is always available to all the players. Since all information is always on the blockchain, visible to all, the DAO concept cannot be applied to games such as
It is, therefore, necessary to investigate which properties these games must fulfill, especially with regard to aspects of security, respectively, the encryption of data, so that they can be implemented in a practical way. This aspect is particularly important because, as described in Section 1, the winning team receives the stake of the opposing team.
Other areas of application for the DAO are also to be investigated. Can entire elections for municipalities, states, and the federal government be implemented via a DAO without the possibility of election manipulation? For this, the performance of the blockchain and the guarantee of voter anonymity must be carefully investigated. It, therefore, remains to be seen how and in what form the DAO principle will be used in the future.

It has many different shapes as well as many various effects, both on the economy and the society at large. Among the most common causes of corruption are the political and economic environment, professional ethics and morality and, of course, habits, customs, tradition and demography. Its effects on the economy (and also on the wider society) are well researched, yet still not completely. Corruption thus inhibits economic growth and affects business operations, employment and investments. It also reduces tax revenue and the effectiveness of various financial assistance programs. The wider society is influenced by a high degree of corruption in terms of lowering of trust in the law and the rule of law, education and consequently the quality of life (access to infrastructure, health care). There also does not exist an unambiguous answer as to how to deal with corruption. Something that works in one country or in one region will not necessarily be successful in another. The understanding was included to the literature as personnel management at the beginning of the twentieth century and it turned into an approach as human resources management in the 1980s. It could be observed that many organizations, which deem the human as the most critical stakeholder, adopt a traditional way of personnel management in operating human resources. The employees play a key role in the success of an organization. For this reason, subjects such as recruitment, training, development, career management, performance appraisal, occupational health, and safety are the fundamental functions of human resources management. The study examines to what extent these roles are evaluated through a case study. The subject matter of the study is the most powerful culture and art foundation in Turkey. Compared to many other nonprofit organizations, the foundation actively performs a variety of services within a year worldwide. The fact that the total number of employees might rise up to 800, including the field personnel, indicates the need of a good functioning human resources management. The growing demands for constant consumer decision-making in an increasingly opaque environment of potential targets of choice exposes consumers to the risk of procrastination, passivity, and resignation, as well as psychological discomfort. The goal here is to contribute to theories of consumer behavior in the context of the psychological experience of choice under the conditions of the accelerated quantity of consumption volumes against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic. While conventional offline shopping was drastically curtailed during the coronavirus crisis, freedom of consumer choice was maintained despite many proclamations to the contrary. I seek to provide support to the claim that freedom of consumer choice was maintained and often amplified during the pandemic in the online virtual environment of digital commerce formats. In doing so, we collected necessary data from the annual reports of 30 commercial banks listed on the Dhaka Stock Exchange, covering the period 2007–2020. In addition, we reviewed the patterns of CSR spending by commercial banks to understand the CSR universe in Bangladesh. We adopted the OLS model with two-way clustering to measure the effects of board elements on CSR spending. Our results confirm that factors, such as independent directors and board size, have a significant and positive relationship with CSR expenditures, while board gender deters the same. Also, board meetings do not have any significant connection with CSR spending. For control variables, factors, such as firm size and leverage, tend to promote the CSR spending of commercial banks, while profitability has no such relationship. As for the sectoral distribution of CSR funds, we found that although the absolute amount of CSR expenditures by banks has increased substantially over the years, they are primarily limited to health, education, natural disasters, and humanitarian activities. These findings are expected to have significant policy implications.",book:{id:"11602",title:"Corporate Social Responsibility",coverURL:"https://cdn.intechopen.com/books/images_new/11602.jpg"},signatures:"Bishnu Kumar Adhikary and Ranjan Kumar Mitra"},{id:"82395",title:"Toward a Better Understanding of Green Human Resource Management’s Impact on Green Competitive Advantage: A Conceptual Model",slug:"toward-a-better-understanding-of-green-human-resource-management-s-impact-on-green-competitive-advan",totalDownloads:5,totalDimensionsCites:0,doi:"10.5772/intechopen.105528",abstract:"Today, green human resource management (GHRM) has become a key business strategy where HRM plays an active role in the ongoing green movement. However, despite the theoretically important role of GHRM, relatively small number of research has been discovered so far about how GHRM, in companies striving to achieve environmental sustainability, could help them gain a green competitive advantage (GCA). Thus, based on the resource-based view (RBV) arguments, the main objective of this paper is to develop a conceptual model of the relationship between GHRM and green competitive advantage through green knowledge, green values, and green commitment. This model is expected to provide a strategic map that could be utilized by the practitioners and managers so that GHRM implementation can be more effective in contributing to green competitive advantage. This chapter explores one area that blockchain technology can radically transform but has not yet received significant attention. We evaluate the suitability of applying blockchain technology for corporate social responsibility (CSR) reporting. We demonstrate that blockchain technology is suitable in the context of CSR reporting since there is a strong need for an immutable common database shared among various stakeholders with potential trust issues. We also argue that blockchain technology does not completely eliminate existing trusted third parties such as governments, international organizations that provide CSR reporting standards, major CSR reporting assurance companies and major CSR infomediaries. In particular, blockchain technology can be used as a platform that integrates all traditional trusted third parties, transforms their functions, and reduces their drawbacks for advancing CSR reporting. These challenges forced companies to search for new ways to create value for their investors and other stakeholders; these challenges forced business leaders to think differently about the role that their companies play in the broader society. As we think about how business leaders balance these short-term opportunities and long-term strategies, it is critical that they realize that he level of social responsibility expected by society has risen significantly in recent years. Companies need to move beyond seeing social dynamics as short-term opportunities and incorporate them into long-term strategies. In this study, we offer 6 rules for moving forward and for turning short-term social opportunities into long-term strategic value creations. Business leaders need to focus on offering products, services and relationships that help their stakeholders improve their lives. In doing this, we rely on both academic studies and case studies to show how moving beyond corporate social opportunity and towards value creation through social responsibility is the key to long-term corporate success.",book:{id:"11602",title:"Corporate Social Responsibility",coverURL:"https://cdn.intechopen.com/books/images_new/11602.jpg"},signatures:"Brian Bolton"}],onlineFirstChaptersTotal:73},preDownload:{success:null,errors:{}},subscriptionForm:{success:null,errors:{}},aboutIntechopen:{},privacyPolicy:{},peerReviewing:{},howOpenAccessPublishingWithIntechopenWorks:{},sponsorshipBooks:{sponsorshipBooks:[],offset:8,limit:8,total:0},allSeries:{pteSeriesList:[{id:"14",title:"Artificial Intelligence",numberOfPublishedBooks:9,numberOfPublishedChapters:89,numberOfOpenTopics:6,numberOfUpcomingTopics:0,issn:"2633-1403",doi:"10.5772/intechopen.79920",isOpenForSubmission:!0},{id:"7",title:"Biomedical Engineering",numberOfPublishedBooks:12,numberOfPublishedChapters:104,numberOfOpenTopics:3,numberOfUpcomingTopics:0,issn:"2631-5343",doi:"10.5772/intechopen.71985",isOpenForSubmission:!0}],lsSeriesList:[{id:"11",title:"Biochemistry",numberOfPublishedBooks:31,numberOfPublishedChapters:314,numberOfOpenTopics:4,numberOfUpcomingTopics:0,issn:"2632-0983",doi:"10.5772/intechopen.72877",isOpenForSubmission:!0},{id:"25",title:"Environmental Sciences",numberOfPublishedBooks:1,numberOfPublishedChapters:11,numberOfOpenTopics:4,numberOfUpcomingTopics:0,issn:"2754-6713",doi:"10.5772/intechopen.100362",isOpenForSubmission:!0},{id:"10",title:"Physiology",numberOfPublishedBooks:11,numberOfPublishedChapters:141,numberOfOpenTopics:4,numberOfUpcomingTopics:0,issn:"2631-8261",doi:"10.5772/intechopen.72796",isOpenForSubmission:!0}],hsSeriesList:[{id:"3",title:"Dentistry",numberOfPublishedBooks:8,numberOfPublishedChapters:129,numberOfOpenTopics:2,numberOfUpcomingTopics:0,issn:"2631-6218",doi:"10.5772/intechopen.71199",isOpenForSubmission:!0},{id:"6",title:"Infectious Diseases",numberOfPublishedBooks:13,numberOfPublishedChapters:113,numberOfOpenTopics:3,numberOfUpcomingTopics:1,issn:"2631-6188",doi:"10.5772/intechopen.71852",isOpenForSubmission:!0},{id:"13",title:"Veterinary Medicine and Science",numberOfPublishedBooks:11,numberOfPublishedChapters:105,numberOfOpenTopics:3,numberOfUpcomingTopics:0,issn:"2632-0517",doi:"10.5772/intechopen.73681",isOpenForSubmission:!0}],sshSeriesList:[{id:"22",title:"Business, Management and Economics",numberOfPublishedBooks:1,numberOfPublishedChapters:18,numberOfOpenTopics:2,numberOfUpcomingTopics:1,issn:"2753-894X",doi:"10.5772/intechopen.100359",isOpenForSubmission:!0},{id:"23",title:"Education and Human Development",numberOfPublishedBooks:0,numberOfPublishedChapters:5,numberOfOpenTopics:1,numberOfUpcomingTopics:1,issn:null,doi:"10.5772/intechopen.100360",isOpenForSubmission:!0},{id:"24",title:"Sustainable Development",numberOfPublishedBooks:0,numberOfPublishedChapters:14,numberOfOpenTopics:5,numberOfUpcomingTopics:0,issn:null,doi:"10.5772/intechopen.100361",isOpenForSubmission:!0}],testimonialsList:[{id:"13",text:"The collaboration with and support of the technical staff of IntechOpen is fantastic.
