The Tunisian situation is grossly the same as other Maghreb countries (Algeria and Libya) where the G1 and the G6 genotypes were reported in livestock and camels [19–22].

CE remains an important public health problem in Tunisia and despite the deployed prevention program, a slight reduction in the mean annual surgical incidence rate (SI) from 15 to 12.6 cases/100,000 inhabitants was observed during the last 20 years [6, 28]. The endemic status differs from one region to another, based on the SI, and some areas have been defined as hyperendemic (SI>22.6), holoendemic (15 < SI <22.6), mesoendemic (7.5< SI <15), and hypoendemic regions (SI < 7.5) [6]. The geographical repartition of different endemic regions was shown in Figure 2. Hydatidosis is known to be more important in rural areas where the definitive hosts (domestic and wild Canid) and herbivore intermediate hosts are in close contact, but an extension in the urban zones was noted during the past decade.

In Tunisia, several human studies were focusing on pediatric hydatidosis [15, 27, 29–31]. Cystic echinococcosis, which commonly starts during childhood or adolescence and described as a young adult disease, may be observed at any age. Two studies on children hydatid cysts (161 and 241 cysts) were carried out between 1999 and 2009 and assessed that the greatest number of cases was observed in the age groups of 4–9 years [15, 31]. Another retrospective study conducted between 1985 and 2009 and based exclusively on 757 pulmonary cysts of young children (3–7 years) and older children (8–15 years) demonstrated a mean age of 5.7 and 12 years old, respectively [27]. This early infestation has already been described in Turkey [32], Palestine [33], and Jordan [34].
In children, the lungs are the most common sites for hydatid cysts followed by the liver (Table 3) [15, 27, 31]. This could be explained by noisier and earlier symptoms in children where cough, chest pain, and hemoptysis are the most frequently encountered signs [27, 30]. Some exceptional cyst localizations (central nervous system, orbit, spleen, kidney, and heart) were also described [15, 35, 36]. Several organs may be contaminated simultaneously and about 20% of cases reported in literature were involved in multiple cysts with essentially liver associated with lung [15, 27]. The growth of the hydatid is independent of children’s age since cysts of high diameter (15 cm) were found in children of 4 years old [15, 31].

CE prevalence, cyst fertility, and protoscoleces viability in Tunisian children.
Numerous pediatric studies have noted a slight male predominance compared to girls with a sex ratio of 1.2 to 1.8 [15, 27, 28, 31]. This observation was although reported in Algeria [37], Iran [38], Bulgaria [39], and Jordan [34]. The higher infestation of boys compared to girls in endemic countries is explained by the fact that school-age boys have more external activities than girls, with a greater promiscuity with dogs. In adults, in contrast to what is observed in children, women are more commonly affected than men [28, 40, 41]. This difference is due to their role in the home activities and that in rural areas, the women are more often at home and care very often for dogs and cattle, which increases the risk of contamination. In addition, the adult females have more regular medical follow-up (e.g., during pregnancy) that results in fortuitous cyst discoveries on ultrasound examinations.
The direct examination of the cyst allows studying its fertility (presence or absence of protoscoleces) and the protoscolex viability. The cyst fertility was analyzed by light microscopic observation. Protoscolex viability was determined using vital eosin 0.2% coloration (Figure 3). The fertility of the cyst is independent of its location and its size and no relation with the age of infected children was noticed (Table 3) [15, 27, 42]. The cyst fertility and protoscoleces viability in humans are not involved in the maintenance of the parasite life cycle because human is a dead-end host but they are parameters attesting of the perfect adaptation of the parasite to humans.

Livestock echinococcosis leads to economic repercussions because of animal liver and lung condemnations, decrease of the carcass weight, animal fertility, and milk production [43]. In Tunisia, breeding remains mainly traditional and the population practices extensive sheep farming. Livestock are ubiquitous all over Tunisia, especially in rural areas and about 4 million sheep female unit (FU), 700,000 goat FU, 420,000 cattle FU, and 17,000 camel FU are recorded [44]. The CE prevalence in food animals depends on the presence of the intermediate host of the parasite and their close contact with the final host (stray and semi-stray dogs). These intermediate hosts differ from one region to another in function of climatic factors and/or breeding or alimentary practices. Thus, dromedary breeding is essentially located in Southern Tunisia (desertic climate) where camels are most consumed, whereas sheep and cattle breedings are practiced throughout the country. CE prevalence in production animals was estimated by post-mortem examination of slaughtered animals at abattoirs. A series of studies carried out in Tunisia assessed that the prevalence of
Liver and lung are the only organs observed to be infected in production animals. The prevalence of the liver localization of the cyst was higher than that of pulmonary cysts except for the dromadaries where the pulmonary cysts are predominant (Table 4) [14, 45, 46, 53]. The co-infection of both organs in the same host is frequently observed and, contrary to what is usually described in humans, several cysts (up to 50 cysts) may develop in the same organ (Figure 7).

However, available CE prevalence in livestock species does not reflect the real endemic situation since it is not considered private or illegal slaughtering. Uncontrolled home slaughtering during religious or local festivities is very common in Tunisia and the infected viscera unsuitable for consumption are rejected and eaten by dogs. The knowledge of the parasite cycle and its transmission modalities are weak, in spite of a perception of the risk notably in rural areas. For example, a study conducted in 2007 (76 patients, 90 and 100 humans from urban and rural areas, respectively), has demonstrated that 40% of topics interrogated have the false notion that the humans’ contamination is consecutive to the consumption of viscera containing hydatic cysts, whereas only 25.8% among them incriminate the dog [54]. The livestock trade in Tunisia is mainly based on weekly markets and exchange of animals all over the country. Thus, the lack of information on the exact geographical origin of livestock makes very difficult the identification of grazing areas at risk and the targeting of prophylactic measures.

Despite the control programs, essentially based on the systematic condemnation of infected offal in slaughterhouses, cystic echinococcosis remains a major public health in Tunisia. The endemic status differs from one region to another, and some areas have been defined as hyperendemic, holoendemic, mesoendemic, and hypoendemic regions. Hydatidosis is important in rural areas but an extension in the urban zones was noted during the past decade. The characterization of the species responsible for echinococcosis in Tunisia is a significant point that has to be taken into consideration in order to focus and to adapt the control measures. Three

Microorganisms support essential roles in soil environment with important effects on ecosystem functioning and stability. They assure soil fertility, sustainability, and plant development [1]. However, global change pressures with increasing contaminant inputs and changing climate and environment have influenced native microbiota in different extent. Changes in soil microbiota community abundance, structure, and functioning could limit soil-provided ecosystem services that they mediate [2, 3].
Rhizosphere refers to the plant roots and soils adhering to them. It is considered the most dynamic and biologically active region of soil. Through the large variety and quantity of metabolites that are released by plant root fibrous system or root hair [4], rhizosphere sustains the large diversity of rhizobiota. This includes microorganisms such as algae, protozoa, slime molds, fungi, bacteria, archaea, viruses, etc. [5]. Most of these microorganisms are responsible for plant protection against pathogenic organisms, plant growth and development facilitation, and plant defense against abiotic stress factors [6].
Rhizobiota abundance and community structure modify once with plant root development and changes of soil environment property. Such changes could convert their functions either positively or negatively. Further, that potentially could impact the plant development [7]. There have been developed several approaches that allow assessment and monitoring of soil microbiota diversity and activity to better understand the soil ecology. These could be culture-based or culture-independent approaches. Culture-based techniques have been shown unable to isolate and grow a large domain of soil microorganisms [1]. Phospholipid-derived fatty acids (PLFA) profile analysis for monitoring soil microbiota phenotypic structure is a common culture-independent approach [8]. Additionally, in situ analysis of nucleic acids, direct analysis of DNA/RNA and polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-amplified segment of DNA molecules are frequently applied culture-independent methods [9, 10]. These culture-independent analytical tools are applied for microbial biomass, diversity, and activity assessment based on taxon richness and evenness. Commonly cited disadvantages are those related to sample storage and sample handling, which could limit results’ accuracy. Soil samples’ physicochemical properties also could restrict DNA/RNA extraction efficiency because of potential presence of inhibiting organic compounds or due to binding properties of nucleic acid molecules to soil particles. Further, DNase and RNase contamination could be easily acquired, which reduces results’ accuracy too [1, 9]. Therefore, in the context of global changes that resulted in imminent abiotic and biotic pressures, as well of the importance of microorganism’s key role in assuring soil-provided ecosystem services, it has become a requirement to find optimal evaluation tools for soil microbiota abundance, structure, and functioning assessment. Such biomonitoring tools help to improve ecosystem management strategies and consequently to protect biodiversity and conserve its functionality before loss of delivered ecoservices.
Biomonitoring tools are important to provide quick answer to changes in soil system offering insight on microbiota and its activity without disturbing soil. Gas chromatographic approaches could provide such information. Soil microbiota profiling based on phospholipids-derived fatty acids profile allows quantitative evaluation of living microbiota abundance and phenotypic structure. Bacterial released volatile organic compounds assessment permits evaluation of microbial metabolism status. Therefore, using such analytical approaches is possible to obtain a wider view on microbiota evolution and function under abiotic and biotic pressures raised by global change.
In the following chapter two chromatographic approaches will be presented that allow soil rhizosphere microorganisms’ assessment and monitoring under a common abiotic pressure, the increased presence of pharmaceuticals in our surrounding environment.
Rhizosphere could comprise either free living or symbiotic microorganisms. Rhizobiota-related ecosystem services are the benefic outputs for human well-being resulted from microbial activities of the rhizosphere. These benefits are the end results of biotic and abiotic interactions and processes. Microbial communities are involved in organic matter decomposition, nutrient cycling, and pollutants degradation. They could stimulate or inhibit plants through the metabolites that they release. Those, they are directly involved in soil regulating, supporting, and provisioning services.
Rhizosphere microorganisms either free-living or biofilm-forming or root-colonizing emit numerous volatile organic compounds through metabolic processes and biochemical processes that synthesize. Microbial volatile organic compounds are small molecules with low boiling points. These compounds diffuse quickly through soil particles. As many microbial volatile organic compounds are acknowledged for their pathogen’s suppression activity, the physicochemical properties of these molecules increase their efficiency [24].
Garcia-Delgado et al. [25] evidenced that repeated application of herbicides reduced significantly fungal community abundance while that of
Human and veterinary pharmaceutical’s presence in environment increased over the years. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are popular over-the-counter drugs used for mild-to-moderate pain such as headache, muscle, or other inflammation issues [28]. These medicines reach environment through wastewater treatment plants’ end products, treated water, and sludge. This is because current wastewater treatment plants are not adequate enough to remove pharmaceuticals from wastewater body [29]. NSAIDs could pollute soil environment through sludge dispersal as fertilizer on agricultural soils or through wastewater reuse for irrigation purposes. Among NSAIDs, diclofenac and ibuprofen are the most reported drugs. Both ibuprofen and diclofenac were reported in environmental samples within ranges of ppb–ppm [28]. Concern of NSAIDs’ presence in environmental compartments is heightened by their potential chronic adverse effect on nontargeted organisms because of long-term exposure. Earlier studies have shown that management practices influence microbial community structure and abundance. This in turn could change microbial volatile organic compounds in composition as well as in quantity. However, at the moment there are no data reported on how the presence of these pharmaceuticals could affect rhizosphere microbiota and its functioning. Based on the importance of rhizobiota-emitted volatile organic compounds in plant protection and development enhancement and potential toxic effects of such pharmaceuticals on rhizosphere microbiota, it has become important to understand microbiota community change and behavior under such challenges.
Based on the frequency of their presence in the environment, the following nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs were choosing for experiment: ibuprofen, ketoprofen, and diclofenac. Commonly consumed aromatic plants such as sage (

One gram of lyophilized rhizosphere soil was used for microbiota phenotypic structure and abundance analysis. Assessment was performed applying phospholipids-derived fatty acids (PLFA) gas chromatographic approach. Phospholipids-derived fatty acids were extracted according to the method presented by Blight and Dyer [32], and Frostegard et al. [33] and derivatized for gas chromatographic analysis (7890A GC-FID, Agilent Technologies, Santa Clara, CA, USA). Their detection was done with flame ionization detector. Separation of all fatty acid methyl esters from each extract was done with a 5% phenyl-methyl polysiloxane column (25 mm × 0.2 mm id., 0.33 μm film thickness, HP-Ultra 2, J&W Scientific, Folsom, CA, USA). Helium was used as carrier with 1.2 mL·min−1 flow. Detector and injector temperature was set at 300 and 280°C, respectively. Oven temperature program starts at 170°C followed by an increase with 28°C·min−1 until 288°C, continued with an increase with 60°C·min−1 until 310°C. This final temperature was maintained isotherm for 1.25 min. Phenotypic profile of rhizobiota based on PLFA profile was determined using the MIDI SherlockTM Microbial Identification System software (Microbial ID, Inc., Newark, DE, USA). Also, the following PLFA biomarkers were used to identify saprotrophic fungi, ectomycorrhizal fungi, nitrogen-reducing bacteria and sulfur-reducing bacteria: 18: 2ω6c – saprotrophic fungi; 18:2ω9c – ectomycorrhizal fungi; 18:2ω6c and 18:3ω3 – nitrogen-reducing bacteria; and 17:1ω7c, 10Me16:0, 17:1ω6, 15:1, i17:1ω7c, cy18:0ω7.8, i15:1ω7c and i19:1ω7c for sulfur-reducing bacteria [32, 33].
Volatile organic compounds emitted by rhizobiota were assessed through headspace-solid-phase microextraction sampling using 85 μm polyacrylate fiber (Supelco Inc., Bellefonte, PA, USA). For this analysis, 1 g of rhizosphere soil was diluted with 2 mL of PBS solution in 20 mL headspace glass vials (Agilent Technologies). The tightly capped headspace vials were incubated for 72 h in dark at 25°C. After this period, the vials were equilibrated for 30 min at 60°C using a TriPlus RSH autosampler (Thermo Scientific, Austin, TX, USA). Thermally activated SPME fiber was inserted in the vial headspace surface and kept for 15 min to allow the adsorption of volatile organic compounds on the fiber extractive phase. Rhizobiota volatilome analysis was conducted on gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS/MS, Trace 1310, TSQ 9000, Thermo Scientific, Austin, TX, USA). Ionization was carried out in electron impact mode at 70 eV ionization energy. Volatile organic compounds were separated on a HP-5MS capillary column 30 m × 0.25 mm, 0.25 μm). The carrier gas was He with 1.2 mL·min−1 flow. The SPME fiber with adsorbed volatile organic compounds was inserted into the GC injection port at 250°C for 5 min to allow the desorption of analytes. The volatile organic compounds were identified by comparison of their mass spectra with compounds corresponding to mass spectra library (NIST/EPA/NIH, Chromeleon 7.2 CDS Software, Thermo Scientific, Austin, TX, USA). All identified volatile organic compounds were expressed in percentages as a normalized amount of each volatile organic compound resulted after the division of peak areas of identified volatile organic compounds by total peak area of all identified volatile organic compounds.

Emitted volatile organic compounds in studied rhizosphere changed over exposure to NSAIDs. In case of
Changes in both rhizosphere microbiota abundance and structure as well of emitted volatile organic compounds in the presence of commonly reported NSAIDs contaminants make us to suppose that microbiota rhizobiota functioning could be also changed. However, more studies in this area should be conducted to better understand the impact of pharmaceutical residues’ presence on rhizosphere microbiota mediated soil ecosystem services. These are important to conserve soil ecosystem provided ecosystem services.

\n\nWhile providing support and advice to all our international Authors, waiver priority will be given to those Authors who reside in countries that are classified by the World Bank as low-income economies. In this way, we can help ensure that the scientific work being carried out can make an impact within the worldwide scientific community, no matter where an Author might live.
\n\nThe application process is open after your submitted manuscript has been accepted for publication. To apply, please fill out a Waiver Request Form and send it to your Author Service Manager. If you have an official letter from your university or institution showing that funds for your OA publication are unavailable, please attach that as well. The Waiver Request will normally be addressed within one week from the application date. All chapters that receive waivers or partial waivers will be designated as such online.

Honey bees are also exposed to pesticides used for the treatment of Varroa and other parasites. The basic concepts about the toxicity of the different kinds of pesticides are explained next. Various degrees of toxicity are found among agrochemicals, and emphasis is given to the classic tenet of toxicology, “the dose makes the poison,” and its modern version “the dose and the time of exposure makes the poison.” These two factors, dose and time, help us understand the severity of the impacts that pesticides may have on bees and their risk, which are analysed in the third section. In this context, the authors have developed a research project in the central-western region of Mexico with the goal to generate strategies for conservation and sustainable management of stingless bees. The chapter aims to present the process of this investigation and its main results in terms of a) local knowledge and management strategies of stingless bees, and b) the social process of technological appropriation of meliponiculture by beekeepers. We recognized specific knowledge on the biology and ecology of stingless bees that result in a system for identifying species and management strategies of wild populations of these bees based on the extraction of nests. The implementation of an innovative productive activity based on the principles of meliponiculture and current techniques has been well received by producers, which has led to the formation of the Meliponicultores Michoacanos del Balsas Association, which grows five species of stingless bees. The research suggests that conservation associated with the use of bees (integral meliponiculture) can be enhanced in the region. Faced with the loss of biodiversity and environmental crisis, it is essential to maintain and enhance local knowledge of stingless bees and management practices. Infestation of bees (132 colonies) by Nosema has also been studied. Three variants of the COI-COII mtDNA locus were registered: PQQ, PQQQ (typical for Apis m. mellifera), and Q (specific for southern races). It was established that 64% of bee colonies from the Tomsk region and all colonies studied from the Krasnoyarsk and the Altai territories originate from Apis m. mellifera on the maternal line. According to the morphometric study, the majority of bee colonies of the Tomsk region are hybrids; in some colonies the mismatch of morphometric and mtDNA data was observed. Moreover, the majority of bee colonies infected by Nosema were hybrids. Yenisei population may be considered as a unique Apis m. mellifera population. Microsatellite analysis (loci А008, Ap049, AC117, AC216, Ap243, H110, A024, A113) showed the specific distribution of genotypes and alleles for some loci in the bees, which differ by geographical location. The current status of meliponiculture in Southeast Asia is mainly focused on pollination utilization and honey and propolis production. This chapter shows that small-scale beekeeping of stingless bees, which is suitable for the flowering pattern in the tropics, is one of the best potential alternative opportunities. The cost-effectiveness analysis based on production yield, investment cost, and profit-return rate is reviewed. These practices, however, impact negatively on biodiversity of existing flora and fauna, particularly causing huge declines in insect biodiversity. This chapter reviews present state of knowledge about agricultural intensification practices and global decline of insect biodiversity (i.e., pest and beneficial insect species) in intensive agricultural system and point out the likely drivers of these declines. Pollinators are responsible for assisting reproduction in over 80% of the world’s flowering plants. In their absence, humans and wildlife would go hungry. Insects are the most efficient pollinators as they play a crucial part in pollination ecology. Pollinators and their habitats have ecological, economic, cultural and social benefits. Pollination efficiency is highly dependent on certain attributes and characteristics of pollinators such as vision, anatomy, food preferences, olfaction, behaviour and learning ability. With the rapid growth of human population, our demand for food has also risen. Our agricultural systems will need to produce more food in a sustainable manner in the future to cope with this. Pollinators play an important role in these ecosystems and will continue to do so in the future. Because pollinators are so important to agriculture, we need to learn more about which crops require specific pollinators and how to best maintain and promote both wild and controlled species. Their diversity needs protection because there are specific relationships between certain crops and pollinators. Pollinator communities are suffering as a result of man-made habitat disruptions, including severe biodiversity loss. He has both an MS and Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering. He was previously a research scientist at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and visiting professor and researcher at the University of North Dakota. He is currently working in artificial intelligence and its applications in medical signal processing. In addition, he is using digital signal processing in medical imaging and speech processing. Dr. Asadpour has developed brain-computer interfacing algorithms and has published books, book chapters, and several journal and conference papers in this field and other areas of intelligent signal processing. Travieso-González received his MSc degree in Telecommunication Engineering at Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), Spain in 1997, and his Ph.D. degree in 2002 at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC-Spain). He is a full professor of signal processing and pattern recognition and is head of the Signals and Communications Department at ULPGC, teaching from 2001 on subjects on signal processing and learning theory. His research lines are biometrics, biomedical signals and images, data mining, classification system, signal and image processing, machine learning, and environmental intelligence. He has researched in 52 international and Spanish research projects, some of them as head researcher. He is co-author of 4 books, co-editor of 27 proceedings books, guest editor for 8 JCR-ISI international journals, and up to 24 book chapters. He has over 450 papers published in international journals and conferences (81 of them indexed on JCR – ISI - Web of Science). He has published seven patents in the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office. He has been a supervisor on 8 Ph.D. theses (11 more are under supervision), and 130 master theses. He is the founder of The IEEE IWOBI conference series and the president of its Steering Committee, as well as the founder of both the InnoEducaTIC and APPIS conference series. He is an evaluator of project proposals for the European Union (H2020), Medical Research Council (MRC, UK), Spanish Government (ANECA, Spain), Research National Agency (ANR, France), DAAD (Germany), Argentinian Government, and the Colombian Institutions. He has been a reviewer in different indexed international journals (<70) and conferences (<250) since 2001. He has been a member of the IASTED Technical Committee on Image Processing from 2007 and a member of the IASTED Technical Committee on Artificial Intelligence and Expert Systems from 2011. \n\nHe has held the general chair position for the following: ACM-APPIS (2020, 2021), IEEE-IWOBI (2019, 2020 and 2020), A PPIS (2018, 2019), IEEE-IWOBI (2014, 2015, 2017, 2018), InnoEducaTIC (2014, 2017), IEEE-INES (2013), NoLISP (2011), JRBP (2012), and IEEE-ICCST (2005)\n\nHe is an associate editor of the Computational Intelligence and Neuroscience Journal (Hindawi – Q2 JCR-ISI).
