A total of 34 blood group systems have been recognized and documented by the International Society for Blood Transfusion (ISBT) [1, 2]. Each system is a series of red cell antigens, determined either by a single genetic locus or very closely linked loci. Alternative forms of a gene coding for red cell antigens at a particular locus are called alleles and individuals may inherited identical or non-identical alleles [3].
Many blood groups are receptors for toxins, parasites, and bacteria, where they can facilitate colonization or invasion or evade host clearance mechanisms [4]. Associations between the blood type and disease have been studied since the early 1900s when researchers determined that antibodies and antigens are inherited. However, due to lack of antigens of some blood groups, there have been some contentious issues with the association between the ABO blood group and vulnerability to certain infectious and non-infectious diseases [5].
Fung et al. [1] (Table 1) gives blood group antigens characterized by ISBT.

Blood group systems recognized by the International Society of Blood Transfusion.
IBST: International Society of Blood Transfusion, NO: Number.
ABO gene products have been associated with some diseases [6, 7, 8]. The human body defense integrity against certain infections is characteristic of the presence or absence of blood group antigens and their corresponding antibodies. More so, data have shown that peptic ulceration was the first proven association to blood group gene products [9, 10].
Red blood cell surface markers act as receptors for attachment to infectious agents and result in vulnerability difference among individuals with diverse receptor profile [12]. Some pathogens share genetic properties with their host. The relationship between ABO antigens and infections as vibrio cholera was discovered by early studies [12]. Major variations in ABO groups in the world were due to H-like antigen on the bacterium (
The GI expresses Lewis and ABH antigens which is strongly linked to vulnerability of norovirus infection. People known as non-secretors are susceptible to infections caused by
The novel virus, COVID 19 caused by SARS-CoV-2 widely spread around the globe is yet to be fully understood. Factors that influence susceptibility to the disease are age, sex, comorbid chronic disease etc. ABO blood group may influence the susceptibility to COVID. Blood group A have been linked with significant increase risk compared to blood group O due to like virus surface proteins. Blood group O persons can easily recognize these proteins as foreign and by extension confers lower chances to establish the disease [17]. Furthermore, anti-A inhibit binds of glycosylated SARS-CoV S protein expressing cells to angiotensin -converting enzyme 2 on cell membrane thereby truncate the interaction between the virus and its receptors, providing protection. Angiotensin converting enzyme activity is much in blood group B. This explains the possibility non-O blood group have more mortality [18, 19].
ABO blood types have been significantly linked to susceptibility to arterial and venous thromboembolism. There is an association between ABO antigens and the structural protein backbone of coagulation factors vWF and factor VIII which affects coagulation. Hypercoagulable plasma potentially causes venous thromboembolism and is characteristically observed in non- group O individuals due to higher levels of vWF. Von Willebrand factor is a large glycoprotein synthesized by Weibel-palade components in the endothelial cells and alpha granules of platelets. It is the carrier of factor VIII and plays a crucial role in plaletet adhesion and aggregation. Blood group O people have lower levels of vWF due to lack of additional carbohydrate to the terminal sugar. Moreso, plasma vWF is proteolyzed by metalloprotease enzyme ADAMTS13. This is faster in group O than non-O groups vVWF, thereby degrading FVIII levels. Group A, B and AB then have more vWF therefore increases FVIII levels [20].
Blood group antigens do not cause cardiovascular diseases yet strongly linked to influence susceptibility. The known primary causes of cardiovascular diseases are genetic traits and life style among others. The ATP-binding cassette 2 genes are located at locus 9q34 which plays a significant role in cholesterol regulation. The H antigen has a connection to the structural back bone of coagulation factors (vWF and VIII) glycoproteins. This phenomenon explains greater risk non-O groups have for ischemic heart disease [8, 21].
Preeclampsia is serious condition with leading cause of intrauterine growth restrictions, maternal and foetal morbidity/mortality. Placental protein 13 is galectin that binds to beta-galactoside (N-acetyl-galactosamine, galactose, and fucose) linked to ABO antigens. This protein is observed in a pregnant woman with preeclampsia at early onset [22].
There are numerous publications in literature that have reported strong association between red cells antigens and some malignancies. ABH antigens are found on epithelial cells of the GIT, prostate, lungs, breast, uterine cervix, mouth, and bladder and their expression diminishes as malignancy progresses. Blood type antigens play a crucial role in cell signaling, cell recognition and cell adhesion yet these antigens are missing from the red cell membrane glycoprotein/glycolipids of malignant cells. This has been linked to DNA methylation in the promoter region. Blood group A gene in this case may inhibit transcription of the transferase enzyme with resultant loss of A antigen [15, 23]. Factually, malignancy progression results to loss of ABH antigens and potential metastasis of tumor cells. This phenomenon complicates routine red cell typing. Some tumor cells have been observed to mimic blood group A antigen markers giving group A person higher risk of disease progression than non-A blood groups [15]. It is important to note that blood group antigens do not cause malignancy rather susceptibility.
Haemolytic disease of the foetus and new born is a major clinical disease associated to Rhesus, Kell, Kidd and Duffy incompatibility between maternal alloantibody (IgG) to foetal antigens with resultant hemolysis of foetal red cells or suppression of the foetal red cell progenitors (commo with Kell system) [24]. Anti-D is the most implicated and severe form of HDFN, yet routine antenatal anti-D prophylaxis has ameliorated it.
In western regions of Africa, it has been reported that individuals with negative Duffy blood type are common and confers protection against malaria caused by
It is fair to state that blood group antigens are not the primary cause of diseases but are associated to susceptibility to some diseases. Blood group antigens play a role as receptors or ligands to some disease processes. In general, non-O blood types are more susceptible to diseases than O.

Over the past few decades, no major new types of antibiotics have been produced and almost all known antibiotics are increasingly losing their activity against pathogenic microorganisms. The levels of multi-drug resistant bacteria have also increased. It is known that worldwide, more than 60% of all antibiotics that are produced find their use in animal production for both therapeutic and non-therapeutic purposes. The use of antimicrobial agents in animal husbandry has been linked to the development and spread of resistant bacteria. Poultry products are among the highest consumed products worldwide but a lot of essential antibiotics are employed during poultry production in several countries; threatening the safety of such products (through antimicrobial residues) and the increased possibility of development and spread of microbial resistance in poultry settings. Biofilm that is a sticky exopolysaccharide is the main virulence factor causing biofilm-related infections. Biofilm formation begins with attachment of bacteria to biotic surface such as host cell or abiotic surface such as prosthetic devices. After attachment, aggregation of bacteria is started by cell-cell adhesion. Aggregation continues with the maturation of biofilm. Dispersion is started by certain conditions such as phenol-soluble modulins (PSMs). By this way, sessile bacteria turn back into planktonic form. Bacteria embedded in biofilm (sessile form) are more resistant to antimicrobials than planktonic bacteria. So it is hard to treat biofilm-embedded bacteria than planktonic forms. For this reason, it is important to detect biofilm. There are a few biofilm detection and biofilm production methods on prosthetics, methods for screening antibacterial effect of agents against biofilm-embedded microorganism and antibiofilm effect of agents against biofilm production and mature biofilm. By forming a biofilm, bacteria protect themselves from host defense, disinfectants, and antibiotics. Bacteria inside biofilm are much more resistant to antimicrobial agents than planktonic forms since bacteria that are unresisting to antimicrobial agents in any way can turn resistant after forming a biofilm. Low penetration of antibiotics into the biofilm, slow reproduction, and the existence of adaptive stress response constitute the multiphased defense of the bacterium. This antibiotic resistance, which is provided by biofilm, makes the treatments, which use effective antibiotic doses on the bacterium in planktonic shape, difficult. But in most studies, only selected patients are tested. This leads to gross underestimation of NAB-prevalence, and the opinion that induction of NABs is a rare phenomenon in botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT)/A-therapy. However, recent cross-sectional studies report annual incidences between 1 and 2% in patients being treated with a complex protein (CP)-containing preparation. This implies that NAB-prevalence above 10% has to be expected in patients being treated for more than 10 years. High dose per session and long duration of treatment are relevant risk factors for induction of NABs. In patients exclusively treated with the CP-free incobotulinumtoxin A (incoBoNT/A) preparation Xeomin® no NAB-induction has been reported so far. In patients with NABs switching to incoBoNT/A may lead to a decline of NAB-titers. In patients with NABs under treatment with a CP-containing BoNT/A-preparation it may take years of treatment until a second treatment failure (STF) becomes clinical manifest. In a cohort of 59 patients with partial STF patients’ reports on the reduction of BoNT-activity predicted the presence of NABs better than treatment related data produced by the treating physicians.",book:{id:"11328",title:"Botulinum Toxin - Recent Topics and Applications",coverURL:"https://cdn.intechopen.com/books/images_new/11328.jpg"},signatures:"Harald Hefter and Sara Samadzadeh"},{id:"80554",title:"The Non-Cosmetic Dermatological Use of Botulinum Neurotoxin",slug:"the-non-cosmetic-dermatological-use-of-botulinum-neurotoxin",totalDownloads:61,totalDimensionsCites:0,doi:"10.5772/intechopen.102543",abstract:"Botulinum neurotoxin injections are currently the most popular non-surgical cosmetic therapy for treating hyperdynamic lines and rebalancing face muscles all over the world. OAB is highly prevalent, with a relevant impact on patients’ quality of life and the available health resources. The prevalence of OAB is 11.8% with no significant difference between male and female. Botulinum neurotoxin is now approved as a treatment of choice for refractory overactive bladder (ROAB) after the failure of behavioral and pharmacological therapy. It is associated with improvement of urgency and urge urinary incontinence in 60–70% of patients. Yet the effect is not long-standing and fades out in a mean of 6-months duration and repeated injection is warranted. Moreover, its associated side effects are not uncommon, especially urinary tract infection and urine retention. New modifications have been studied to make it less invasive, effective, and tolerable by the patients through injection-free mode. Among these symptoms, loss of urine is considered the most bothersome, and recent literature has proposed that urinary incontinence and poor quality of life should be considered as associated conditions. Urinary incontinence is responsible for reducing the enjoyment of life, including loss of self-confidence and limitation of social activity; it is also associated with anxiety, depression, and deterioration in sexual life, and reduced physical activity. Conservative treatments represent a first-line therapeutic approach to neurogenic urinary disorders, followed by oral medications. However, these treatments often do not provide complete recovery from symptoms, especially from urinary incontinence. Onabotulimun toxin A has proven to be safe and effective for treating neurogenic urinary incontinence and its use is associated with a strong improvement of patients’ quality of life. A smile with an esthetic appearance should be symmetrical and should reveal less than 2 mm of gums when smiling. A gingival smile, gummy smile, or high smile line, is defined as the number of excess gums on the upper jaw exposed. This may have some serious psychological repercussions on the patient, which may sometimes lead them to conceal their smile to avoid “embarrassment.” One of the most common methods of treating a gingival smile resulting from an overactive lip is lip reposition as a surgical procedure and the injection of type A (Botox) toxin as an injectable inhibitor of muscle action. However, many patients refrain from surgical treatment because of fear of complications and pain. In this case, injections of botulinum toxin group A are an excellent alternative to surgery. Thus proteomics, an area of research that detects all protein forms expressed in an organism, including splice isoforms and post-translational modifications, is more suitable than genomics for a comprehensive understanding of the biochemical processes that govern life. The most common proteomics applications are currently in the clinical field for the identification, in a variety of biological matrices, of biomarkers for diagnosis and therapeutic intervention of disorders. From the comparison of proteomic profiles of control and disease or different physiological states, which may emerge, changes in protein expression can provide new insights into the roles played by some proteins in human pathologies. Understanding how proteins function and interact with each other is another goal of proteomics that makes this approach even more intriguing. Specialized technology and expertise are required to assess the proteome of any biological sample. Currently, proteomics relies mainly on mass spectrometry (MS) combined with electrophoretic (1 or 2-DE-MS) and/or chromatographic techniques (LC-MS/MS). MS is an excellent tool that has gained popularity in proteomics because of its ability to gather a complex body of information such as cataloging protein expression, identifying protein modification sites, and defining protein interactions. The Proteomics topic aims to attract contributions on all aspects of MS-based proteomics that, by pushing the boundaries of MS capabilities, may address biological problems that have not been resolved yet.",coverUrl:"https://cdn.intechopen.com/series_topics/covers/18.jpg",keywords:"Mono- and Two-Dimensional Gel Electrophoresis (1-and 2-DE), Liquid Chromatography (LC), Mass Spectrometry/Tandem Mass Spectrometry (MS; MS/MS), Proteins"}],annualVolumeBook:{},thematicCollection:[],selectedSeries:null,selectedSubseries:null},seriesLanding:{item:{id:"11",title:"Biochemistry",doi:"10.5772/intechopen.72877",issn:"2632-0983",scope:"Biochemistry, the study of chemical transformations occurring within living organisms, impacts all areas of life sciences, from molecular crystallography and genetics to ecology, medicine, and population biology. Biochemistry examines macromolecules - proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates, and lipids – and their building blocks, structures, functions, and interactions. Much of biochemistry is devoted to enzymes, proteins that catalyze chemical reactions, enzyme structures, mechanisms of action and their roles within cells. Biochemistry also studies small signaling molecules, coenzymes, inhibitors, vitamins, and hormones, which play roles in life processes. Biochemical experimentation, besides coopting classical chemistry methods, e.g., chromatography, adopted new techniques, e.g., X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, NMR, radioisotopes, and developed sophisticated microbial genetic tools, e.g., auxotroph mutants and their revertants, fermentation, etc. More recently, biochemistry embraced the ‘big data’ omics systems. Initial biochemical studies have been exclusively analytic: dissecting, purifying, and examining individual components of a biological system; in the apt words of Efraim Racker (1913 –1991), “Don’t waste clean thinking on dirty enzymes.” Today, however, biochemistry is becoming more agglomerative and comprehensive, setting out to integrate and describe entirely particular biological systems. The ‘big data’ metabolomics can define the complement of small molecules, e.g., in a soil or biofilm sample; proteomics can distinguish all the comprising proteins, e.g., serum; metagenomics can identify all the genes in a complex environment, e.g., the bovine rumen. This Biochemistry Series will address the current research on biomolecules and the emerging trends with great promise.",coverUrl:"https://cdn.intechopen.com/series/covers/11.jpg",latestPublicationDate:"July 5th, 2022",hasOnlineFirst:!0,numberOfOpenTopics:4,numberOfPublishedChapters:319,numberOfPublishedBooks:32,editor:{id:"31610",title:"Dr.",name:"Miroslav",middleName:null,surname:"Blumenberg",fullName:"Miroslav Blumenberg",profilePictureURL:"https://mts.intechopen.com/storage/users/31610/images/system/31610.jpg",biography:"Miroslav Blumenberg, Ph.D., was born in Subotica and received his BSc in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. The Proteomics topic aims to attract contributions on all aspects of MS-based proteomics that, by pushing the boundaries of MS capabilities, may address biological problems that have not been resolved yet.",annualVolume:11414,isOpenForSubmission:!0,coverUrl:"https://cdn.intechopen.com/series_topics/covers/18.jpg",editor:{id:"200689",title:"Prof.",name:"Paolo",middleName:null,surname:"Iadarola",fullName:"Paolo Iadarola",profilePictureURL:"https://s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com/intech-files/0030O00002bSCl8QAG/Profile_Picture_1623568118342",institutionString:null,institution:{name:"University of Pavia",institutionURL:null,country:{name:"Italy"}}},editorTwo:{id:"201414",title:"Dr.",name:"Simona",middleName:null,surname:"Viglio",fullName:"Simona Viglio",profilePictureURL:"https://s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com/intech-files/0030O00002bRKDHQA4/Profile_Picture_1630402531487",institutionString:null,institution:{name:"University of Pavia",institutionURL:null,country:{name:"Italy"}}},editorThree:null,editorialBoard:[{id:"72288",title:"Dr.",name:"Arli Aditya",middleName:null, surname:"Parikesit",fullName:"Arli Aditya Parikesit",profilePictureURL:"https://mts.intechopen.com/storage/users/72288/images/system/72288.jpg",institutionString:null,institution:{name:"Indonesia International Institute for Life Sciences",institutionURL:null,country:{name:"Indonesia"}}},{id:"40928",title:"Dr.",name:"Cesar",middleName:null,surname:"Lopez-Camarillo",fullName:"Cesar Lopez-Camarillo",profilePictureURL:"https://mts.intechopen.com/storage/users/40928/images/3884_n.png",institutionString:null,institution:{name:"Universidad Autónoma de la Ciudad de México",institutionURL:null,country:{name:"Mexico"}}},{id:"81926",title:"Dr.",name:"Shymaa",middleName:null,surname:"Enany",fullName:"Shymaa Enany",profilePictureURL:"https://mts.intechopen.com/storage/users/81926/images/system/81926.png",institutionString:"Suez Canal University",institution:{name:"Suez Canal University",institutionURL:null,country:{name:"Egypt"}}}]}]}},libraryRecommendation:{success:null,errors:{},institutions:[]},route:{name:"chapter.detail",path:"/chapters/35423",hash:"",query:{},params:{id:"35423"},fullPath:"/chapters/35423",meta:{},from:{name:null,path:"/",hash:"",query:{},params:{},fullPath:"/",meta:{}}}},function(){var e;(e=document.currentScript||document.scripts[document.scripts.length-1]).parentNode.removeChild(e)}()
