There is debate as to the validity of the concept of burnout and whether it represents a phenomenon that is distinct from more familiar emotional states such as anxiety and depression. Burnout is said to occur when the emotional demands of a job, particularly those jobs that require the giving of oneself, become so enduring and intense that the individual becomes drained and unable to continue functioning at a desirable level. Another area of discussion is the degree to which burnout is similar or dissimilar to concepts such as compassion fatigue, secondary trauma, and vicarious trauma. Anecdotal reports suggest that burnout is both a real phenomenon and distinct from common states of anxiety and depression and that it represents a unique form of secondary trauma. The purpose of this book will be to clarify the characteristics of burnout and to also provide suggested interventions that might help to alleviate the distress of this phenomenon.
