Chronic Postsurgical Pain Acute Postsurgical Pain Anesthesia Surgery Pharmacology of Pain

About the book

The majority of surgical patients experience acute postoperative pain, which often follows a defined and expected trajectory. Despite advances in our understanding of surgical pain, pain assessment techniques, and acute pain control, more than half of postsurgical patients describe inadequate pain relief in the immediate postoperative period. We are seeking chapters on: • Mechanisms of postsurgical pain • Risk factors for acute postsurgical pain (patient-related, surgery-related, anesthesia-related) • Social determinants and acute postsurgical pain • Pre-existing pain and acute postsurgical pain • Acute postsurgical pain assessment • Managing perioperative pain (nerve blocks, wound infiltration, epidural analgesia, anaesthesia/analgesia) • Managing perioperative pain • Managing postoperative pain in special populations (pediatric patients, pregnant patients, patients with multiple or complex comorbidities, morbidly obese patients, mentally ill or cognitively impaired patients, patients with pre-existing pain) • Managing postoperative pain in individuals at risk for substance use disorders (those with active substance use disorders, those on medication-assisted therapy, and those with a personal or family history of substance use disorder) • Managing postoperative pain in outpatients • Global issues in postoperative pain control • Chronic postsurgical pain mechanisms • Chronic postsurgical pain epidemiology and risk factors (patient, surgery, anaesthesia-related) • Preventive approaches to chronic postsurgical pain • Diagnosis and assessment of chronic postsurgical pain • Treating chronic postsurgical pain • New understanding of phantom limb pain We are also interested in acute and/or chronic postsurgical pain topics related to a specific type of surgery, such as spinal surgery, total knee or hip arthroplasty, thoracic surgery, cancer surgery, limb amputations, and so on. Topics might also look at how specific clinical practices address acute and chronic postsurgical pain, such as anesthesiologists, nurses, physical therapists, and others. Articles about acute or chronic postsurgical pain control following pacemaker or implantable cardioverter-defibrillator implant would also be of interest, as minimally invasive procedures can be associated with moderate to severe acute postoperative pain, which is often managed in the home setting. We would also welcome articles on postoperative pain management following emergency surgery or trauma surgery. The editors find this to be a very important and clinically relevant topic for just about all healthcare systems, but one where the research interest has flagged. Our interest in this book will be to elevate the topic as one of major interest to all healthcare systems and most clinicians in real-world practice.
