About the book

Metallic glasses, invented by a group of researchers at the California Institute of Technology in 1960, were synthesized while rapid cooling of the Au-Si binary alloy system. The bulk metallic glasses (BMG), of a critical casting thickness of 1cm, were synthesized much later. Being an amorphous substance is the biggest advantage of metallic glasses. This amorphousness provides a set of unique properties to metallic glass materials, such as high corrosion resistance, high wear resistance, good mechanical strength, and desirable electromagnetic properties. Moreover, metallic glasses behave like homogeneous materials in absence of long-range ordering. Since their initial discovery in the 1960s, metallic glasses have found novel applications in many research areas and nanotechnology, especially in nanofabrication within viscous limits. Metallic glasses have glass forming ability, may demonstrate reduced glass transition temperature, and could show temperature inversion. The uniqueness of the microstructure of metallic glasses has led to the application of various characterization investigations. Atomistic modeling, classical theory, and mechanistic pathways have been proposed to explain the formation and properties. This book will aim to consolidate the recent advances made towards manufacturing & fabrication, properties, and novelties in the application of metallic glasses. Furthermore, the book will encourage scientific communities to report experimental evaluation, characterization, and computational modeling of various types of metallic glasses.
