Tectonics - Recent Advances

Edited by Evgenii Sharkov, ISBN 978-953-51-0675-3, 346 pages, Publisher: InTech, Chapters published July 18, 2012 under CC BY 3.0 license
DOI: 10.5772/2620

This book is devoted to different aspects of tectonic researches, especially to modern geodynamic processes. Syntheses of recent and earlier works, combined with new results and interpretations, are presented here for diverse tectonic settings. Most of chapters include up-to-date materials of detailed geological-geophysical investigations, which can help more clearly understand the essence of mechanisms of different tectonic processes. Among general problems of tectonics are discussed processes in axes of slow-spreading mid-ocean ridges on example of central part of Mid-Atlantic Ridge and in continental collision zones. Formation of sedimentary basins are considered on examples of Niger Delta, Triassic Cuyana Basin (Argentina), and Mesozoic and Cenozoic basins of the Alpine margin (Tunisia); neotectonic processes examined in Turkey and Morocco; tectonic evolution of the southern margin of Laurasia in the Paleozoic discussed as well as interrelation of western Troms-Lofoten and the Lewisian complexes in the Midle Paleoproterozoic.

Evgenii Vitalievich Sharkov was born in Leningrad (Saint Petersburg). He received a PhD in Leningrad St. University and D.Sc. in Soviet Academy of Sciences (Moscow). Now he is the Professor of Petrology at the Institute of Geology of Ore Deposits, Petrography, Mineralogy and Geochemistry (IGEM), Russian Academy of Sciences (Moscow), and a lecturer at Russian State Geological Prospecting University (RSGPU, former MGRI), Moscow. He conducts research into igneous petrology and tectonics and has published about 400 papers in the field of the Precambrian geology and petrology, layered intrusions, igneous petrology and geochemistry of modern continental rifts, continental collision zones and oceanic floor, evolution of tectonomagmatic processes throughout the Earth’s history and comparative planetology. His professional memberships include: Academician of Russian Academy of Natural Sciences; Fellow of the Russian Petrographic Committee and Society of Economic Geologists (SEG); Member of the Russian Mineralogical Society, Geochemical Society (GS) and IAVCEI, Large Igneous Province Commission.

Edited Books

  • New Frontiers in Tectonic Research - General Problems, Sedimentary Basins and Island Arcs

This book is devoted to different aspects of tectonic research. Syntheses of recent and earlier works, combined with new results and interpretations, are presented in this book for diverse tectonic settings. Most of the chapters include up-to-date material of detailed geological investigations, often combined with geophysical data, which can help understand more clearly the essence of mechanisms of different tectonic processes. Some chapters are dedicated to general problems of tectonics. Another block of chapters is devoted to sedimentary basins and special attention in this book is given to tectonic processes on active plate margins.
