About the book

In the super-connected contemporary society, user experience (UX) is playing an increasingly important role in the design of artefacts. UX is a broad area that encompasses several dimensions within the ergonomics domain. First, it covers usability, which assesses the property of a system or product to be used easily and effectively. However, this concept can be subjective and depend on the end-user. This is the reason why usability evaluation can be beneficially extended by considering the accessibility. This second concept focuses on designing artefacts that comply with the social inclusion of users with impairments. According to the ISO FDIS 9241-210 norm, accessibility is defined as ‘the usability of a product, service, environment or facility by people with the widest range of capabilities’. Besides these functional aspects, UX intends to complete an even more holistic assessment of ergonomics by analyzing the affective and emotional factors of the human interaction with objects. The objective of this book will be to provide the reader with a comprehensive overview of the recent advances in UX. Each section of this volume is expected to cover the specificities of the three main concepts: usability, accessibility, and user experience. Since most of the scientific research is dedicated to the interaction with digital devices, a fourth section will intended to focus on the particularity of analyzing UX when the user interacts with tangible and/or passive artefacts (e.g., physical objects). We are interested in studies describing best practices to carry out an UX analysis that includes: (i) identification of the end-user, (ii) evaluation of the gaps and barriers, (iii) prioritization of the improvements, (iv) implementation of the modifications, and (v) assessment of the ergonomics. This last point will represent the cornerstone of the book. We encourage the authors to submit manuscripts applying or extending efficient methods for UX evaluation, such as: user observation (free use), user testing (experiments); questionnaires (e.g., SUS, PSSUQ, IsoMetrics, QUIS, SUMI, WAMMI, UEQ, meCUE, PREMO, …), comparative (or summative) testing, formative testing (i.e., involving users in the design process), and checklists based on accessibility guidelines. Any work related to the fundamental and applied aspects of UX are welcome for submission and peer-review. As previously mentioned, we are interested in UX studies for improving user interaction with both electronic systems or inert artefacts.
