About the book

Electrical grids worldwide are experiencing major changes in terms of energy generation, transmission, delivery and distribution in order to enhance the entire system control, reliability, efficiency, and safety. Advanced energy systems and technologies such as renewable sources of energy, energy storage systems, and electric vehicles (EVs) as well as equipment such as sensors, smart meters, and communication devices along with innovations in computing technologies, machine learning, and data analytics are used to modernize the electric grid and the way it is planned, operated, and managed.

IntechOpen invites researchers from academia and industry to submit research and review chapters that explore developments, opportunities, challenges, and solutions related to the modern grid’s operation, planning, and management. Potential topics include, but are not limited to: Novel optimization algorithms for operating and planning modern electric grids; Renewable energy systems and clean energy technologies; Energy storage systems; Distributed generation; Micro-grids and state-of-the-art methods for their optimization and control; New energy management strategies and practices for efficient use of distributed energy sources in modern grids; Frameworks for accurate forecasting of electric load and intermittent renewable sources such as wind and solar; Electricity markets; Smart grids: Technologies, management, big data analytics, communications, security and privacy; Artificial intelligence and machine learning; Reliability analysis of modern grids; Economics of energy systems and technologies; EVs and transportation electrification.

All chapters are copy-checked and typesetted before being published. IntechOpen regularly submits its books to major databases for evaluation and coverage, including the Clarivate Analytics Book Citation Index in the Web of ScienceTM Core Collection. Other discipline-specific databases are also targeted, such as Web of Science's BIOSIS Previews.

Mahmoud Ghofrani

University of Washington Bothell

Dr. Ghofrani is an Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering at School of STEM, University of Washington Bothell. He received his B.S. in 2005 from Amirkabir University of Technology, Iran, M.S. in 2008 from the University of Tehran, Iran, and Ph.D. in 2013 from the University of Nevada, Reno, USA. From 2009 to 2013 he was a Research Assistant at the University of Nevada, Reno, USA and he joined the University of Washington Bothell in 2013 and he is still active there. His research interests include: renewable energy systems, electric energy markets, electric drive vehicles, energy storage systems, smart grids, data analysis and processing, deep learning and their applications on energy systems and renewable energy forecasting.
