About the book

Ecological restoration or restoration ecology is meant to rebuild, initiate or speed up the recovery of an ecosystem that has been degraded or disturbed. Restoration process involve to reproduce a pre-degraded ecosystem or to build a new ecosystem where it had not earlier occurred. In the era of climate change, modernization, urbanization coupled with population explosion are directly and indirectly responsible for degrading the agricultural ecosystem, forest ecosystem, hydrological cycle and other important ecosystems.

Ecological restoration involves the various activities to support the revival of ecosystem structure and function along with stipulation of goods and services. Among the solutions for restoration of ecosystems, ecological process is the best tool available with ecologist as ecological restoration requires a multidisciplinary approach of biological, physical and chemical in congruence with relevant socio-economic and political frameworks. In order to clear the main approaches and problems of restoration of ecosystems we need to encourage professionals of all fields with a sound knowledge and skills to achieve the objective of restoration science and its impacts of ecological restoration on ecosystems and societies. Thus there is an urgent need to spread the knowledge, tools and conservation mechanism to restore the degraded ecosystems with the help of ecology.

In view of these conditions the present edited volume entitled “Restoration Ecology - Need, Principles, Process and Policy” will be an attempt to understand and highlight the scientific approaches of improvement and conservation of restoration ecology.
