Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) are one of the most promising areas of modern artificial intelligence, covering a lot of practically important applications, such as economy, banking and finance, manufacturing, power industry, logistics and transportation, smart cities, as well as advanced research directions, such as artificial life, artificial brain, simulated reality, evolutionary computing etc. The current state-of-the-art in MAS research and development activities may be decomposed to three main closely interconnected directions: theoretical foundations of MAS, their implementation issues, and their applications to various problems. Theoretical models and approaches, developed in MAS area, have the objective to create the unambiguous and non-contradictory mathematical background of MAS, providing their verification, validation, and assessment. MAS implementation techniques and technologies are the most dynamic directions, covering the development of programming languages and toolkits, which provide fast prototyping, debugging and maintenance of MAS, as well as the creation of non-conventional hardware and middleware architectures, which are oriented to effective MAS operation in various environments. The application direction includes activities to which purpose is to implant software/hardware-implemented MAS to different components of large-scale socio-technological systems - from business personal assistants to power plants scheduling devices.
