Laser ablation is a unique process for thermally or nonthermally removing atoms from a solid surface in a controlled fashion by irradiating it with a high fluence, short wavelength and short pulse (ns-fs) duration of laser beam. The laser ablation process can be used for drilling holes through very hard materials; for machining material surface to create micro- and nano-features or patterns; for vaporizing materials to produce thin film surface coatings and synthesize various nanomaterials like nanoparticles and nanotubes; for removing contaminants or impurities on the surface of materials; for the chemical compositional analysis of solids; and for surface modification of materials including laser transformation hardening, laser remelting strengthening, laser shock peening, laser glazing, laser surface alloying, and laser cladding. Advantages of laser processing of materials are simplicity, versatility, reliable and cost-effective.
This book will cover the most recent research and development of utilizing laser ablation phenomenon for material processing and analysis through a number of original research studies and literature reviews.
