About the book

Recent advances in optoelectronic developments at the component and device levels offer great opportunities in meeting state-of-the art applications requirements from 5G deployment with opto-electronic based transceivers for front-haul and back-haul cellular data traffic to complex photonic integration where high-bandwidth requirements are needed for datacenter, metro, and long-haul fiber optic transport, to IoT and recent advances in Augmented Reality headset commercialization, in addition to sophisticated lidar designs, require an in-depth treatment to the subject of opto-electronics that is at the heart of all the product areas listed above, not just listing the latest advances of each area of opto-electronic components from the light sources to the modulating device to the detectors but also the tight integration needed with high speed electronic devices that drive, amplify and deliver the needed signal integrity for high-bandwidth applications. Another important area to address is the packaging requirements to deliver reliable products and modules including light coupling in and out of photonic chips, thermal management, and chip stacking to address the necessary integration required.

This book aims to address the latest breakthroughs in laser sources developments, modulator, and detector developments, also to cover packaging and integration in order to describe in details how modules and products are built for today's state-of-the-art applications while also providing a roadmap for developing and building next generation opto-electronic based products.

Once approved by the academic editor and publishing review team, chapters are written and submitted according to pre-agreed parameters

Full chapters peer reviewed

Review results due: November 17th 2020

Full chapter manuscripts are screened for plagiarism and undergo a Main Editor Peer Review. Results are sent to authors within 30 days of submission, with suggestions for rounds of revisions.

Book compiled, published and promoted

Expected publication date: January 16th 2021

All chapters are copy-checked and typesetted before being published. IntechOpen regularly submits its books to major databases for evaluation and coverage, including the Clarivate Analytics Book Citation Index in the Web of ScienceTM Core Collection. Other discipline-specific databases are also targeted, such as Web of Science's BIOSIS Previews.

Dr. M. H. Shahine is a Senior Principal Optics engineer at General Dynamics Mission Systems. Prior to that, he was leading product engineering group at Acacia Communications, and before that, he was the Founder and CTO of LaserRays Incorporated. Prior to LaserRays, he was with Ciena Corporation, Linthicum, MD, from August 1997 until August 2014 where he was a Senior Principal Engineer in the Office of the Chief Technology Officer Organization. Prior to Ciena Corporation, he held senior technical positions at SDL Inc., The National Research Council of Canada and Nortel Networks. • Dr. Shahine served as a member of the board of directors for OIDA (Opto-electronic Industry Development Association) in Washington, DC. representing Ciena Corporation from 2007 until 2012. He also served as the Graduate School Program Chair and Professor for Telecommunications at the University of Maryland system. He received a Master’s degree from the Johns Hopkins University and a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland, both in electrical engineering. • He was awarded twice in 2013 and 2015 the Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award for Innovation from the Johns Hopkins University, Whiting School of Engineering. • He is a senior member of the IEEE, Photonics and Communications Societies. He holds 9 issued and several pending patents. He is the co-author of a book chapter on Semiconductor Laser Diode.

Introducing your Author Service Manager

Ms. Marijana Francetic

As an Author Service Manager my responsibilities include monitoring and facilitating all publishing activities for authors and editors. From chapter submission and review, to approval and revision, copyediting and design, until final publication, I work closely with authors and editors to ensure a simple and easy publishing process. I maintain constant and effective communication with authors, editors and reviewers, which allows for a level of personal support that enables contributors to fully commit and concentrate on the chapters they are writing, editing, or reviewing. I assist authors in the preparation of their full chapter submissions and track important deadlines and ensure they are met. I help to coordinate internal processes such as linguistic review, and monitor the technical aspects of the process. As an ASM I am also involved in the acquisition of editors. Whether that be identifying an exceptional author and proposing an editorship collaboration, or contacting researchers who would like the opportunity to work with IntechOpen, I establish and help manage author and editor acquisition and contact.
