Chemical ecology deals with language of nature. It helps us study the intricate interactions that exist between living organisms and environment. It involves the chemistry of ecological functioning of specific molecules that often act as signal molecules. These signal molecules largely affect the behaviour, metabolism and other activities of the recipients or participants at intraspecific and interspecific levels. Chemical ecology is an interdisciplinary field and therefore involves the academic participation of the scientists from diverse fields like analytical chemistry, behaviour, ecology and neurology among the others. Chemical ecologists study the semiochemical interactions of organisms and environment in different ecological systems (terrestrial, freshwater, marine and soil environments).
