About the book

From time immemorial, heavy metals have proved to be a source of concern for the environment, namely Zn,Hg and U and Cr to name a few. It is the persistent efforts of scientists across the globe to get rid of harmful effects of these heavy metals. Since Cr is one of the essential elements in human body functions, it is necessary to study their role and also their toxicity in a particular oxidation state. Be it the aquatic environment like the sea, the biological systems like the soil, plants and atmosphere in general, Cr toxicity plays an important role in studying variations of heavy metal toxicity. Chromium is an important mineral for obese people, and it is one of the key minerals in controlling blood sugar and lipid levels. As the main ingredient of glucose tolerance factor (GFT), chromium helps insulin in reducing the blood glucose, by stimulating glucose uptake from the muscles and other tissues. When the Chromium levels are lower, the circulating level of (GFT) is lower, and as a result, insulin is less effective in reducing blood sugar. Hence, blood sugar remains high, stimulating further insulin release, which is again blocked from being effective. Researchers have been putting efforts in this kind of environmental study and it has shown very encouraging results. It is my sincere effort to bring together the researchers in this field of science which is the recent trend in keeping our health, environment safe and clean, devoid of heavy metals that can play havoc in our daily lives if care is not taken to a microscopic level. The role of Cr in body functions and also in the environment will be elucidated in this book.

Dr. Daisy Joseph is a Scientific Officer of India's premier nuclear research facility, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Trombay, Mumbai. Dr. Joseph completed her Ph.D. in 2007 and is proficient in Radioisotope induced Energy Dispersive X-ray fluorescence-(EDXRF), Proton induced X-ray Emission (PIXE) and synchrotron based EXAFS and XANES. She has set up the PIXE facility at FOTIA-Folded Tandem Ion Accelerator at Van de Graff, BARC, Trombay, Mumbai. Dr. Joseph has carried out measurements of K X-ray production cross–sections of various elements using Proton energy of 3-5 MeV from FOTIA, studied the effects of chemical environments on X-ray intensity ratios of 3D elements such as Cu, Mn, Cr and U compounds by photon, proton and heavy ion excitation and synchrotron probes. For the past two decades, she has had hands-on experience in EDXRF using radioisotopes such as 55Fe, 109Cd, 241Am and semiconductor detectors such as Si (Li), HPGe and Peltier cooled Si(Li) detectors and its associated electronics, as well as in data acquisition systems such as PC based MCA. Dr. Joseph uses these techniques to characterize a wide variety of materials such as superconductors, ferroalloys, monazites, rare earth materials and cruds (corrosion products) from thermal reactors. Dr. Daisy Joseph has around 103 publications in peer reviewed journals and proceedings and has authored a chapter in the book titled 'Advanced Trace Analysis.” She has spoken at 10 invited talks and has chaired a session at NTAC, Kochi in February 2017.
