About the book

Nematodes can be important parasites of humans, other animals, and plants. They can cause serious damage and yield losses in a wide range of crops throughout the world. This imposes a challenge to sustainable production of food worldwide. Thus, finding sustainable methods to control these pathogens is very important. In this book we will discuss identification and characterization methods based on molecular and morphological techniques, incidence and impacts on large crops, in addition to nematode presence parasitizing alternative species (weeds, ornamentals, invasive plants and volunteer plants). We will also examine the management of these parasites in an integrated manner, using specific monitoring, chemical control methods, biological control methods, genetic host resistance and cultural methods of nematode control, taking into account the capacity of these phytoparasites to be affected by the imbalance of productive systems and to comply with the function of environmental bioindicators.

This book aims to provide an update regarding the current and emerging challenges of the presence of nematodes in different crop production systems.

Cristiano Bellé is a researcher in the field of Plant Nematology and Biological Control at Phytus Group, Brazil. He also cooperates as a researcher at the Universidad Nacional de San Agustín de Arequipa - UNSA, Peru. He graduated from the Federal University Santa Maria (Brazil) in 2012. He obtained a Master’s degree in Agronomy from the Federal University of Santa Maria in 2014. He obtained his Doctorate degree (2018) in Crop Protection- Federal University of Pelotas - Faculty of Agronomy Eliseu Maciel (Brazil). He obtained his Post-Doctorate Degree (2019) in Soil Biology and Microbiology in the Soil Department of the Federal University of Santa Maria. He has experience in the field of Agronomy with an emphasis in Plant Pathology and Plant Nematology. His work is related to etiology and diagnosis of plant diseases caused by nematodes and fungi, pathogenicity and host-parasite relationships of plant-parasitic nematode diseases, interaction between plant-parasitic nematodes and soil born fungi in plants and control of parasitic-plant nematodes by biological, cultural and chemical control.
