About the book

The aim of image restoration amounts to repairing or reversing the defects that are associated with the degradation of an image. Degradation exists in several forms such as motion blur, noise, and camera misfocus. For instance, with motion blur, an accurate estimation can be acquired regarding the actual blurring function and reverse the blur to restore the original image. And in a case where the image is degraded by noise, the technique might attempt to compensate for the degradation it caused. The image restoration problem exists in numerous fields. A large majority of disciplines (for example, astronomy, medicine, forensics, and military) that acquire the images under imperfect conditions require restoration techniques.

This book aims to introduce implementation of several methods used in the image processing world to restore images, fundamentals of image restoration, followed by image enhancement, essence of the observation model, as well as several well-known restoration algorithms. The book also hopes to include in-depth discussion on boundary effects and blur identifications which are an important component in image restoration.

All chapters are copy-checked and typesetted before being published. IntechOpen regularly submits its books to major databases for evaluation and coverage, including the Clarivate Analytics Book Citation Index in the Web of ScienceTM Core Collection. Other discipline-specific databases are also targeted, such as Web of Science's BIOSIS Previews.

Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman

Dr. Hum Yan Chai is a researcher in artificial intelligence and computer vision. He received his B.Eng degree in biomedical engineering from the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in 2010, and graduated with a PhD degree in 2013 (UTM), his research topic being related to the application of artificial intelligence in medical image analysis. After completing his PhD, he worked as a senior engineer in the national ICT research center, MIMOS, for three years. During his tenure there, he was assigned to improve the algorithm quality of video analytics related to computer vision and to analyze the performance of various types of existing solutions. Dr. Hum (MIET) registered as a Chartered Engineer (UK) and Professional Engineer (BEM) in 2016. His research interests include computer vision, machine learning, data mining, pattern recognition, multiple-objectives optimization, signal processing, and medical image processing. He is passionate about conducting research and has published more than 30 international articles, authored 5 books, filed 18 patents, and won a number of research competition awards in Malaysia. He is currently serving as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechatronics and Biomedical Engineering, Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman.

As an Author Service Manager my responsibilities include monitoring and facilitating all publishing activities for authors and editors. From chapter submission and review, to approval and revision, copyediting and design, until final publication, I work closely with authors and editors to ensure a simple and easy publishing process. I help to coordinate internal processes such as linguistic review, and monitor the technical aspects of the process. As an ASM I am also involved in the acquisition of editors. Whether that be identifying an exceptional author and proposing an editorship collaboration, or contacting researchers who would like the opportunity to work with IntechOpen, I establish and help manage author and editor acquisition and contact.
