Smart biofeedback is an intelligent, autonomic feedback mechanism to let people smartly (1) observe their physiologic information such as muscle tension, blood pressure, heartbeat rates, and brainwave signals, (2) develop an awareness of their physiological reactions, and (3) learn to change these physiologic responses accordingly. The mechanism smartly helps people take responsibility for their cognitive, emotional, and behavioural changes for better health. Smart biofeedback is an intelligent learning process that utilizes various sensors to measure physiologic functions and parameters. Sensory data are collected, analyzed, and then fed back to the human sensor nervous system in an intelligent, direct and immediate way. Smart biofeedback utilizes a broad range of advanced technologies like wireless communications, Internet of Things (IoT), wearables, biomedical sensors, artificial intelligence (AI), big data, virtual reality, cybernetics, and so on, to smartly collect, analyze and feedback the physiologic data. As one of the popular self-care approaches, smart biofeedback has been applied in therapies of self-regulation of psychiatric and physiologic disorders, training of balance and mobility tasks, development of socio-emotional interactions, assessment of psychophysiological stress, and more. The applications of smart biofeedback are various and with promising perspectives in every area of our life.
