About the book
Osteomyelitis is the name given to bone infection caused by microorganisms, especially bacteria, but also mycobacteria or fungi. According to the time and evolution of the disease, osteomyelitis can be classified as acute or chronic and theoretically can affect any bone of the body, but there are more prevalent parts in accordance to the origin of the disease. People with exposed fractures, compromised immunity who have recently undergone surgery, those with uncontrolled diabetes, sickle cell anemia and circulatory disorders in general, are at risk for the disease. In addition, patients undergoing chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and hemodialysis, those who continuously use corticosteroids and users of injecting abuse drugs, should also be considered among the risk group. Both diagnostic methods and treatment possibilities have undergone a revolution in the last decade and our proposal in this book is to provide a good overview of the current scenario of osteomyelitis diagnosis and treatment. We propose to separate the book in the main sub-groups, i.e., circulation disorders, injury or surgery, immune suppression, and chronic osteomyelitis, which have similarities in the disease and on the respective diagnosis and treatment. We expect that this book will be useful not only to physicians but also, for other health professionals and scientists.
