Aphids - Ecology, Host Specificity, Parasitism and Pest Control

Dimitrios Kontogiannatos

Agricultural University of Athens

Researcher at the Agricultural University of Athens and the National Center for Scientific Research 'Demokritos”, Greece whose research mainly focuses on the use of RNA interference (RNAi) technology in designing insecticidal formulations of low environmental cost. Additionally, Dr. Kontogiannatos is studying the molecular and physiological impact of various xenobiotics on the developmental processes of terrestrial arthropods.

About the book

Aphids represent a very important family of the Hemipteran order with unique features and characteristics. Most people have gotten to know aphids as the major garden pest infesting the soft green tissues of their ornamental plants and damaging them by sucking out the sap. Therefore, aphids represent an important group of organisms with exceptional evolutionary and ecological particularities like complex life cycles, host-plant specificities, facultative bacterial symbiosis, and resistance against pathogens, parasitoids, or environmental stresses.

In this book, we are aiming to cover the entire spectrum of aphid research including:

• Aphid-microbe endosymbiosis,

• Chemical signaling and semiochemicals,

• Aphid biology and ecology,

• Aphid endoparasitoids and their mass scale production,

• RNA interference and chemical pest control,

• Plant host specificity and pathology of aphid pests of crops.

You are welcome to submit original research or review chapters, with respect to the book’s topics in order to efficiently address this very important scientific field of entomological research.

Publishing process

Book initiated and editor appointed

Date completed: October 15th 2021

Applications to edit the book are assessed and a suitable editor is selected, at which point the process begins.

Expected publication date: June 5th 2022

All chapters are copy-checked and typesetted before being published. IntechOpen regularly submits its books to major databases for evaluation and coverage, including the Clarivate Analytics Book Citation Index in the Web of ScienceTM Core Collection. Other discipline-specific databases are also targeted, such as Web of Science's BIOSIS Previews.

About the editor

Dimitrios Kontogiannatos

Agricultural University of Athens

Dr. Dimitrios Kontogiannatos is a collaborative researcher at the Agricultural University of Athens (AUA) and the National Center for Scientific Research 'Demokritos” (NCSR 'Demokritos”), Athens, Greece. In 2013, he received his Ph.D. diploma in Insect Biotechnology and Insect Molecular Biology from the AUA’s Department of Biotechnology, specializing in Pest Control Science and Insect Biotechnology. His research mainly focuses on the use of RNA interference (RNAi) technology in designing insecticidal formulations of low environmental cost. Additionally, he is studying the molecular and physiological impact of various xenobiotics on the developmental processes of terrestrial arthropods. From 2015 to the present he has been collaborating with the AUA’s Biotechnology Department as a part-time Assistant Professor. In 2018 he founded and currently runs a Pest Control Company headquartered in Argyroupolis, Attica, Greece, named 'PROPEST FHG”.

Introducing your Author Service Manager

Ms. Andrea Tomurad

As an Author Service Manager my responsibilities include monitoring and facilitating all publishing activities for authors and editors. From chapter submission and review, to approval and revision, copyediting and design, until final publication, I work closely with authors and editors to ensure a simple and easy publishing process. I maintain constant and effective communication with authors, editors and reviewers, which allows for a level of personal support that enables contributors to fully commit and concentrate on the chapters they are writing, editing, or reviewing. I assist authors in the preparation of their full chapter submissions and track important deadlines and ensure they are met. I help to coordinate internal processes such as linguistic review, and monitor the technical aspects of the process. As an ASM I am also involved in the acquisition of editors. Whether that be identifying an exceptional author and proposing an editorship collaboration, or contacting researchers who would like the opportunity to work with IntechOpen, I establish and help manage author and editor acquisition and contact.
